You have a point there but graduates of the other courses you mentioned actually find it harder to survive.

You talked about a medical doctor earning 50 pin in a private Hospital?
Well the other health professionals/graduates will find it hard to earn 20 pin there or even get a job there.

It's a nationwide problem not a medical problem.
It is in all sectors.

Las Las it's all about passion and money, let's start telling ourselves the truth.
Few, very very few people study courses in Nigeria solely for passion.
At most 30% passion, 70% benefits.
The benefits sef is even in the passion.

95%+ of graduates and students of other medical courses All dreamt of studying Medsurg before opting for other courses for obvious reasons..even most BDS students(mostly due to ehm ignorance..hehe make una no roast me like corn)

Out of the remaining 5% or less, about 2% saw the light at the beginning and discovered they were simply not good enough and opted for other courses while they still can(not because they didn't want to)

The remaining 3% are those that actually wanted to study other paramedical courses which is dominated by nursing students(Mostly females here).

That. Is. the. Brutal. Truth.

If being a gatekeeper paid more and had more rep than Medical fields, most of us would be jostling for it.

Simple.. Let's not surgacoat it.

Unemployment rates and low standards of living na im cause am.

In this poo hole, it's all about survival first then passion and other stuff a very distant second.

There are exceptions, but extremely rare.

Yes I said it, and that is the brutal truth.

You're an intelligent man.
Another thing. No doctor earns 50k on a full time job, it could just be a locum arrangement. Doctors on the average do better than every other graduates, as per pay and ease of landing a job. People talk about IT, oil coys, how many engineering graduates get these jobs?
But at least impossible to see a doctor without a job after 2 years post graduation, unless that doctor is either dumb or mentally challenged.

Secondly, medicine and BDS is a skilled degree, you get to learn the art of doing things with your hands, and there are no limits as to the money or height you can attain once you have those skills. There are doctors who are billionaires, orthopedic surgeons, cosmetics and aesthetic surgeons. So, there's no limits to what a doctor can do, even in Nigeria that's terribly bad.

Please Young Minds,
Pursue your MBBS and BDS dreams with every iota of strength and enthusiasm youve got. Even if you don't have passion for medicine, but for the sake that you have to pay bills, be relentless in your pursuits. Don't allow post like this to discourage you from doing the right thing, which is studying a course that will truly empower to be not just self sufficient, but to also make a difference.
Forget all the gist about passion and how you need passion to do well in medical school, those things are trash. You don't have to be passionate to do well, all you need is intelligence and the right attitude.
I never wanted to be a doctor, in fact, the thought of medicine was an eleventh hour decision for. I lived all my life thinking I would be a Catholic priest, I had little or no passion for medicine. But, today... So far so good. I have done very well, I'm doing very well and will still do a whole lot.
The only thing that motivates me is the fear of becoming poor, and I can tell you that, it's big enough to make want to become a very good doctor. Because if I become a good doctor, I will make more money.

Hi Nairalanders...
I'm not a relationship person, but I have noticed that once I meet ladies that I like either for the good or bad reasons, they often want to take forever to get to know me first before anything. I'm always astonished whenever they say this, and it is not stemming from impatience as they often accuse me of. I just feel it's rather too ridiculous to think you can get to know me and my intentions with time.

I don't know if this is true for every other guy, but for me, once I meet a lady I had already made up my mind on what to do with/to her, and waiting for 100 years and wasting my time won't change that.

So ladies and gentlemen, Is it really possible to know someone with time?
How comes people that dated for years end up apart?
How comes people that chase each other for years break up after 2 months of relationship?
Can a lady truly get to know a guy's intentions or this is just some protocol that ladies have failed to question?

55-59% Proceed to MPhil/PhD
60% above Proceed to PhD.

Stop deceiving yourself. The principles methodologies and use of those tests are taught to Scientists from undergraduate even to Post-baccalaurete and post-graduate levels, according to their specialities. Medical laboratory is very dynamic and always evolving field.
The funny thing about this Lab man is that he likes using big words.
Do you think using big words makes you smart. There's no where in the world that a lab scientist or whatever you call yourself is placed higher than a Pathologist.
Even a 4th medical student is way higher than a lab scientist. I'm not surprised you consider Bence Jones, AFP as highly complex investigations, they're really complex to you judging by the fact that you only did laboratory medicine for 6 months in your 3rd year, 6 months in your 4th year and 3 months in 5th year, because the remaining 3 months was used for your project. I'm very conversant with your curriculum and I can confidently tell you that you know nothing. Even the things you're saying, it's just copy and paste, that's why your argument is incoherent and lacks simple logic.

I have helped so many so called final year medical lab student with their project, and I do shed tears each time I interact with them. Bros, you guys know next to nothing even in laboratory medicine, you're only good at making noise.
Please, I indulge doctors to stop arguing with this slowpokes, they don't deserve your time.
Just come to clinics in a teaching hospital and see how they're always running to doctors clothed in fears whenever they have a minor health challenge. Why not run test and treat yourself of leukaemia or reduce your fractured legs and as well manage your diabetic ketoacidosis.

I don't blame you people. All these disrespect is because we are in a society where people are not appreciative and they think they can run their mouths anyhow. Do you even know the history of laboratory medicine in Nigeria and the world, do you know how it started?
Off course, you don't when you spend all your time trying to bite the finger that fed you.
Please, stop showcasing your ignorance to the public and take time to reflect on your life and be grateful for where you are.
Go and write this down, no matter how far you will go, you will never be higher than the dullest pathologist professionally, that's the truth. And if you don't like it, go to medical school, that's if you can.

Honestly this matter calls for special consideration by the federal government!
There's need to listen to the demands of these healthcare professionals. You can't continue to suppress their voices and expect to have a smooth health sector that can guarantee quality healthcare delivery to Nigerians. Why can't government understudy how healthcare professionals work in synergy in the developed countries and replicate same here
Stop giving advantage to only one professional group while neglecting the demands of others! You can never get things right by doing that!

Medical doctors have been the ones running our health institutions for many years, yet we have one of the poorest health sectors in the world!
All the time they attribute our poor health sector to lack of adequate funding by the government but as a matter of fact, that is not completely true. No matter how much government invests in the health sector, we'll continue to have poor outputs until issues relating to professional rivalry in the sector are addressed.

To solve this problem once and for all, government should replicate the system being practiced in the UK here whereby professional healthcare administrators are put in charge of governing health institutions. The healthcare administrators are in a better position to manage the sector because they're usually individuals with no allegiance to any of the healthcare professional groups. So, the likelihood of being biased is greatly reduced.

Nigerian medical doctors on their part need to stop being insecure and concentrate in developing the numerous medical specialties that are grossly in short supply in this country! Imagine them dragging laboratory benches and pharmacies with medical lab scientists and pharmacists when their mates in the rest of the world are busy with organ transplantation, high risk pregnancies, plastic surgeries, stem cells transplantation etc. What a shame!

You just made a fool of yourself. You really do not know how healthcare in developed countries work. Do you?

Talking about stem cell transplant, do you know that the doctors who champion stem cell transplant are laboratory physicians called haematologist. They same people you accused of dragging bench with lab technicians or scientists as they often claim...

Always get your facts straight, and stop being stupid.

This is a joke.
Pathologist are not trying to dominate the labs, pathologist own the lab. One needs at least 11 years of medical education to become a pathologist, not 3 to 4 months as claimed by the slowpoke.

It's really annoying when some people say categorically, what they have no knowledge of.

Population of Christian medical and nursing students far outweigh that of Muslims despite being in a city commonly seen as an Islamic city (this is another fallacy too)

To the best of my knowledge, I don't know of any public medical school that admits based on religious affiliation. Tribe plays more roles in some regions, rather than religion.

The phobia is perceived, rather than being real. We should be guided on what we say please.
The only thing I know about Unilorin is that there are no clear-cut guidelines for admission, just like unijos. Someone can score 88 and still end up with nothing...
But admitting based on religious affiliation, that's not true. It's just like saying that ABU and Sokoto only admits Muslims, because I know alot Christians studying medicine and other professional courses in those schools. ABU best graduating student from medicine last year or so, is an Igbo guy who is a Christian. Let's try not to make things look worse than the really are.

Charley pls from ur posts,i discovered that you used last anatomy and still had a blazing distinction. Please how did you do it.. Help ur son because our school recommended last as the standard testbook for anatomy which means exams questions will come from it.. But that book is very hard to read... Please tell me how u did it.

I would love it if I had a D in anatomy
First, I want to apologize for replying late.

Yes, it is a difficult book for beginners, I must confess...
But it's be best and most concised Anatomy textbook, in my opinion.

Yes, Chief you can achieve that...
The best way to study last anatomy is repetitions, that's what worked for me. Read it as many times as possible, and distinction would not be a problem...
There's nothing in anatomy that's not in last anatomy, so you might not be needing anyother text, save for atlas and Cunningham manuals... But if you want to combine, gray's anatomy for student is very good too.
Good luck

Baba, I'd advise you study your Medicine here in Nigeria. In most instances after studies abroad you'd be coming home to practice and since you have a foreign degree, you'd have to write the Nigerian Medical and Dental Licensing Exam.

This is an exam which only a few foreign trained physicians pass(and I believe it was intentionally made tougher)... Some have had to bribe their way through (Nigerian Factor).

Just my candid thought.

What University are you studying at? , I'm a 300L Physiology Student of the COM_University of Ibadan.
Very good advice.
But if you have the fund to study in USA, Canada, Australia, UK, New Zealand, then go for it. At least you can practice there after graduation, and earn living.
But Ukraine, Romania, Belarus, China, the islands etc.
Just stay back and invest the money into business...
Medical education in Nigeria is almost free and the standard is fairly good, at least there hundreds of Nigerians going abroad to practice every year, and they are doing great...

I'm the kind of typical lazy medical student but I'd agree with you if you said Grays anatomy for students is the best out there. I think the book is very underrated TBVH. They start with some kind of summary to give you a broad view of the system and later go deep but not deeper than you need. first thing first though, you must be able to experiment and stick to what works for you. sadly, i discovered the book during the last system :Head and neck but it made the system so easy.
I read quite a number of Anatomy text though because I wasn't satisfied with them:
- Keith moore - absolute waste of time plus it's an overkill TBH
- Snells' - I love colours
- Vishram Singh - good but I couldn't trust an Indian text and I was forgetting so easily and terrible pictures too.
- Last- fantastic book, staight to the point but almost no pictures too so I had to juggle with netters which was time consuming and boring
-Tried the Huge Gray, was good at first and I loved their style of writting but no clinical correlates and It was MASSIVE. I was choking after some weeks until I found Grays anatomy for students
It was the game changer, my grades changed abit but i was studying with more ease and had more time to enjoy myself
- BRS + lecture materials + jottings = MB
Thank you very much.
You truly understand what it means to read and still enjoy your life. I loved the few pages of Gray's I flipped. Just that I discovered it late and I was already addicted to Last. But, truly it's highly underhyped

it is not advisable to use Last anatomy, Keith Moore will give u all u need to know
No. I disagree. Keith Moore is too bulky and will consume your time. You might spend the whole of your preclinics reading while others are playing basketball and reading news. If you can't use last, your surebet is Gray's anatomy student version. Good book, good graphics and easy to understand.

This is just my opinion, I'm actually not a fan of big books. Moreover, I started using last in 2nd year. Never used anything else, save for few clinical notes on Richard Snell and rare occasion looked at pictures in Gray's. It worked for me. I got distinction in anatomy with ease, I'm serious when I say, with ease. Good luck.
