A 53-year-old professor and chairman of a department of anatomy received a severe head injury while rock climbing. During the ascent of a crevasse, his companion's ice axe fell from his belt and struck the prof's head, causing a depressed fracture of the frontal bone. After convalescing from his accident, the professor returned to his position in the medical school. It quickly became obvious to the faculty and student body that the professor's social behaviour had changed dramatically. His lectures, although amusing, no longer had direction. Although previously a smartly dressed man,he now had an unkempt appearance. The organization of the department started to deteriorate rapidly. Finally he was removed from office after being found one morning urinating into the trash basket in one of the classrooms. Use your knowledge of neuroanatomy to explain the professor's altered behaviour.

There is a level of poverty in Nigeria that should be unacceptable. I cannot understand why Nigerians are not more angry than they are."
This is the issue. We are very comfortable with corruption. Why codone corruption cos the man incharge is from your region? It's sickening! I think it's high time we started asking critical question, ethno-religious chauvinism won't do us any good. Beleive me, it won't!!!

This guy should just go and grab a seat, you want to be marketable with mere MBBS, isn't it? My friend go and clear your primaries and start residency ASAP, i guess you won't come back to this forum once you become a consultant. With MBBS you are still yet to be a qualified doctor, get it!!!

Is there any school abroad(not africa) wt a tuition fee not above 400k per annum?
For now NO. From experience i think the cheapest place to study medicine outside Africa is Eastern Europe, i have a couple of friends in Ukraine, poland, Russia, Belarus etc, and i can't remember any of them paying below 6000 USD(N900,000) tuition, i think some schools in cyprus and the caribbean offer low tuition aswell, but it can't be less than 5000USD(N750,000). Goodluck.

s!s! afrika:

seems Madoona uni also buh OaU is on verge. The building would soon be completed.
I rep OAUrx, the best school in Africa, oya, bite me.
**tonguesOUT** :p:p
Lol. I don't think modoona has a strong pharmacy programe, like i said some schools will soon join so your OAU might be among. I don't subscribe to that best "best school in Africa" 'best school in Nigeria" rants, that is why i won't bite you. I beleive that schools are just there to bring out the best in you, your success in life is not proportional to the school you attend, take Dr Ben carson as a case of study, he attended michigan state uni but better than Havard professors. So which ever school you are, just try and work on your inbuilt potential cos that is what really matters.
NB:Most of our schools here are just local champions, so we need to improve to become the best in the world, if we must be the best in anything.
#peace.

slord: Hey guys, wev been talking abt d rigor of combining USMLE jacking with d much cumbersome medical curriculum here in d country.pls lets discuss on d modalities,hw do we go abt it?,wat tins shud we do?hw posibu is it? Etc. Lets leave d era of 'wanting to do',and begin to'plan to do'.lets join hands and see hw it cn work out,GOD bless us al,thanks
It's a thing of choice bro, not everyone wants to leave Nigeria, so don't speak for everybody cos some people really don't bye the idea. To your question, i think it does'nt require just HARDWORK but knowing the possible ways to getting an interview for a residency spot, and if you read lomaxx's previous posts on this, by now you should have a first hand knowledge of what is required of you. Beleive me, your step scores is very important but it alone WON'T get you into residency. So i advice you do more researchs on it and decide if you really want to give it a shot, mind you the procedures are quite cumbersome but it all depends on your willingness.#peace

1stUnique: Gud day sirs, It seems there are great ppl here who will enlighteen me on my course of study..

Due to d higher competition of Medicine and Surgery in Nigeria uni's. I was advise to choose Dentristry and denta surg thats its almost d sametin wit medicine. And after graduating 4rm dentristry, there is an 18 mnth course sum1 can do to obtain MBBS. Pls how true is these? And also can sum1 still go for specialist such as neurosurgeon, cardiology after dentristry? Pls help me b4 i made a decision. Thanks
No you can't specialise in neurosurgery, cardiology etc, with BDS(Bachelor of dental surgery). You are kind of restricted to specialties in dentisitry, like maxiliofacial surgery. I don't know the process involved in acquiring MBBS after BDS, but my advice is"don't got for Dentistry if you don't have passion for it", mind, you can still make it to medical school it all depends on your willingness.
NB: there is no shortcut to any place worth going.#peace.

So just zero your mind on final year electives in the US. God will help us all.
Thank you Dr. Lomaxx, am planing towards that. Am still confuse why electives at ivy schools(havard, mayo, yale, etc) requires tuition and step 1 scores? God will help us......wish Nigeria could get better.

lomaxx:

Since you're yet to start pre-clinicals and pre-med, the best you can do is prepare your mind.

Well- the aim of writing usmle is to get into residency in the us. And as IMGs we are already disadvantaged. USMLE alone is not enough to earn a spot. A lot of factors will determine whether you'll get in. E.g the specialty you're applying to, your usmle scores, the strength of your letters of recommendations, your personal statement etc etc

And about usmle- it's not enough to write this exam. As an IMG, it is a matter of priority that you ace this exam. Once you pass, there is no room for improvement. If you pass, you don pass. And your number of trials will bring down your chances of getting a spot.

As a Nigerian medical undergraduate, I have been severely disadvantaged in taking this exam. USMLE needs exclusive preparation. Unfortunately, after my 100 level, we don't have any official holiday till graduation. The little I've had is a 3-week break after Part 2 MB Exam and the public holidays. The rest of the days are very indulging. So I can't write this exam because 1) if I ace usmle, I'll mess up at home. 2) I need to ace home stuff- that's where the stakes lie. I'm saying this to say that if your school's academic calendar is convenient, you can sneak in study for this exam and ace it. I won't advise that you prioritise usmle over home stuff. There will be ample time for usmle later...even after graduation.

However, one thing which you must have before graduation (notice how I said "must"wink, is USCE( US Clinical Experience). I highly suggest that anyone that wants to do residency in the US must do his/her final year electives in the United States. This is the only chance you can get to have direct-contact with patients...and not mere observerships. Those folks prefer folks with USCE over those with observerships or worse still- those without. There are some hospitals that don't require USMLE before you do your electives. You can always know them.

I wish you good luck in all your endeavours.
Dr lomaxx, thanks for this insightful post. I think USCE is the surest way to getting strong letters of recommendation.

Amb Fitsaint:

I wish to know more abt d exam sir "USMLE" if i am not mistaken. Does one write d exam during one's pursue of MBBS in one's undergraduate days or after induction? What does it entail? what sacrifice will one make to make it a success- tips nd formulae- cos I bliv it will insurmountable for most medical students as a result of saturation?

Pls, I am interested nd shall be very grateful if u painstainkingly shed more light sir?
Amb fistan, am in your shoes also. I have been doing so many researchs on that USMLE even before i got admitted into medical school. USMLE is divided into three.
Step 1
step 2 (clinical knowledge) and (clinical skills)
step 3
in step 1, you will be examined on basic medical science, i.e. Anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, pathology, pharmacology, genetics, biostatistic, behavioural medicine and dietics.
So step 1 is meant to be written when you are through with BMS courses, probably after your 5th year. The exams is very demanding especially for we IMG's due to the fact that our curriculum is not designed in a way to help us prepare for the said exams. But with hard work and commitment one can easily scale through, wishing you the bestg
