THREE FORMS OF YAHOO-YAHOO IN NIGERIA: SCAMS WEY DEY HIDE IN PLAIN SIGHT My dear people, how una dey? Na with heavy heart I sit down to write this piece wey don dey disturb my mind since early this week. I try to dodge am, but the urge just dey push me to talk true. So, make una open una mind as we go dive into the three forms of Yahoo-yahoo wey dey reign for Naija today. This one no be small gist, so brace up—it go long small, but e go worth am! For my non-Nigerian readers, when I say “Yahoo-yahoo,” I mean scam—pure and simple. Out of these three forms, only one dey well-known as scam for society. The other two? Ehn, dem dey very subtle, like snake wey dey crawl for night. Only those wey get sharp, questioning mind fit spot dem as Yahoo-yahoo. Let’s break am down! 1. ONLINE AND OFFLINE SCAMMERS: THE OG YAHOO BOYS This first form na the one everybody sabi—Yahoo-yahoo wey dey loud like siren for Naija. E start as offline scam, coded as “419” back in the days, but with internet boom, e don turn online business. The offline part almost don die, and now na emails, fake profiles, and WhatsApp scams dey reign. Since this one dey well-known as scam, I no go talk am too much like the other two wey dey hide. Nigerians don wise up to this one, so these Yahoo boys dey focus more on foreigners for diaspora. You fit think say Naija people dey lead this game—me sef think so before—but e go shock you say no be true! Other countries wey I no go mention dey run this scam with high-tech style, very quiet, no trace. Naija boys just dey loud, leaving digital footprints everywhere. My advice? Stay sharp, no gree engage in am, and no fall for their sweet mouth. Be vigilant, abeg! 2. HERBALISTS: SCAMMERS WEY DEY WEAR TRADITIONAL CAP Now, let’s talk about the second form—herbalists, dibias, babalawos, and those self-proclaimed healers wey no get any formal medical training. These ones na proper Yahoo-yahoo, but dem dey disguise under “traditional healing.” Naija laws too weak to regulate who fit give medical advice or treat sick people, and these guys dey cash out on top our ignorance. You don see advert wey claim one concoction fit cure all sicknesses? My people, no single medicine fit cure everything! This form get two categories, and I go break am down. Spiritual Healers: The “Buy Snake Leg” Crew These ones na the dibias and babalawos wey see spiritual attack in every small cough or headache. Dem go tell you to bring nonsense like “leg of snake” or “feather of invisible bird” for spiritual cleansing to fight off “attacks” wey dey cause your sickness. Pure scam! I know one old friend wey dem collect over ₦500,000 to do cleansing before she fit bury her papa, saying if not, the thing wey kill am go continue to dey kill for family. Guess what? The papa die of stroke—something wey come from high blood pressure wey doctor fit explain. But dem still chop her money! These people dey cause wahala for Naija families, pointing fingers at relatives, saying dem be the cause of your problem. Dem no go ever tell you to check wetin you dey do wrong; na to scatter family and relationships dem sabi. Their rituals and sacrifices no dey work—na pure Yahoo-yahoo. Spot dem and run! Herbal Healers: The “Magic Leaf” Sellers The second category na those wey claim dem dey heal with natural herbs. Some even mix this one with spiritual nonsense. No be say herbs no get healing power—many drugs na from herbs dem come, whether natural or lab-made. But the way these people dey do their own? E dey too crude and ridiculous! You go see dem advertise one herbal product wey fit cure all sicknesses with “no side effects.” Chai, my people, every medicine get side effect, even if e small! And no single drug fit cure everything. Their concoctions na mix of tree barks, roots, and leaves wey dem cook under dirty conditions, with no standard measurement or hygiene. No research, no trials to prove wetin dem dey sell. Some studies even show say these concoctions get toxic substances wey dey cause kidney wahala and other problems. No wonder Naija life expectancy dey among the lowest for world! I remember when I be teenager, I follow my uncle (God rest his soul) go meet these herbal healers. Dem give am gallons of concoction to drink, each one claiming different reasons for his sickness without doing any medical test. We dey jump from one to another because nothing dey work. By the time we get proper medical diagnosis, the sickness don scatter his body, and those toxic concoctions no help matters. If I get the knowledge and money wey I get now then, maybe he for still dey alive. My advice? Stick to conventional medicine. E no perfect, but dem no dey make fake claims. Every drug get documented side effects, and dem pass serious testing before approval. Protect your life, abeg—run from these herbal scammers! 3. PASTORPRENEURS: THE CHURCH BUSINESS HUSTLERS The third form of Yahoo-yahoo na the one wey dey hit Naija hard—pastorpreneurs, those pastors wey turn church into cash-and-carry business. I dey talk about Christianity, my faith, because religion be sensitive topic for Naija, and I wan focus on wetin I sabi. These pastorpreneurs don cause serious havoc, scatter families, and mislead people, all in the name of God. Back in the day, Christian missionaries build schools and hospitals for Naija, free or cheap, to help communities grow. Those ones no be about personal gain—church boards dey control things, no single man dey run show. But today? Many pastors dey ministry for money! Dem measure success by crowd size, not souls saved or society improved. Dem accept donations from Yahoo boys, pray for dem, and encourage their nonsense. Fake prophecies, fake miracles, and pointing fingers at innocent family members dey scatter close-knit families. Like dibias, dem blame spiritual attacks for everything, brainwash members to see their real families as enemies, and fleece dem with “seed sowing,” offerings, and endless projects. You go see members dey suffer while these pastors dey live large. The worst part? Some dey discourage people from hospital, claiming spiritual healing fit solve everything. I know one sick person wey a pastor tell to do dry fasting instead of going hospital, even when he dey very weak. The man die. This na why Naija get some of the richest pastors but some of the poorest people for world. These pastorpreneurs dey destroy the hard-work mentality, pushing miracles and grace over preparation and honesty. Dem even dey romanticize with corrupt politicians, helping launder stolen money. The only small good thing be say their fake hope dey keep some Nigerians going, maybe reducing suicide rates, but e dey make people docile, waiting for miracles wey no go come. These behaviours dey common for “one-man” churches wey no get strong board to check the pastor. Any church wey one man dey run like personal shop, I no dey go there. E be like business, not church. I advise una to do the same. WETIN YOU GO DO NOW? Now you don sabi the three forms of Yahoo-yahoo for Naija—online/offline scammers, herbalists, and pastorpreneurs—you fit spot their tactics. Whether na fake email from Yahoo boy, babalawo wey dey demand snake leg, or pastor wey dey sell miracles, dem be scammers! Stay sharp, protect your money and your life, and no let dem use your head. Naija, we fit do better—let’s wise up! |

Odunharry:Mere vocal confession doesn’t save one. That’s one of the heresies of these mushroom men of God. Christ came to earth and one of the first things he did was to get baptized to demonstrate its importance. Christians who should follow his footsteps are now saying it’s not important. John 3:5 is very clear. You have to be baptized with water and spirit to make heaven. It’s not only by mere vocal confession. |
ichuka:No matter how righteous you are. If you are not baptized, no heaven. Even Jesus that is God was baptized when he came to the earth. What other example do you need? He was sinless and blameless yet he went to John the Baptist who was lower than him to get baptized. John 3:5 is very explicit on this. You have to be baptized with both water( physical baptism) and spirit for you to enter heaven. Any pastor that tells you otherwise isn’t a man of God. |
kenoja:This is a four years course. That money isn’t enough for four years. Did you show strong income on how you plan to pay for the subsequent years? |

ravensckar:You are the one that is reasoning from his anus because you get away with rubbish with Jumia and don’t understand contract of sale. He even said “Oya come carry your tv” in his response alluding to Gazzuzz being the title holder having fully paid the agreed prize for the goods. That TV became Gazzuzz’s own after his payment was confirmed by him without any issue. He just acted that way because the TV was with him. You and the seller are ignorant of contract of sale. If Gazzuzz ever decides to pursue this in court, he will win hands down. Let your word be your bond no matter what. That’s how to know men of integrity. |
biosilicon:Bros you didn’t try. If you go to court and your write up here is presented as evidence, you will lose woefully. You had a contract with him. He has done his part by paying you and remaining for you to do yours and just because you saw someone else with a better offer, you reneged on your obligations. If he goes to court, you will pay for damages. This is nothing but lack of integrity. A man with integrity would have stood by his word. |
ICaSNg:Thanks. |
ICaSNg:Please which exchange rate do they use for this? CBN or Black market? |
