My girlfriend is a silent member of this forum. She read everything she knew here. Her visa was approved this morning 6:30 am by the visa officer. We appreciate all the contributions and we pray everyone got their visas. She was asked how she got the school she will be attending? She will be attending St cloud State University and she will be going for Masters in Criminal Justice. The visa officer ask about Standardize test. Her statement of intent and the relation between her undergraduate degree psychology and her intent course in st Cloud. She was ask to briefly talk about Minnesota. I will say God is the major factor and preparation is key . 1. She was also ask to describe her admission process
Congrats to her BUT Pls kindly ask her to share her transcript so that other people can benefit from it.. since these forum helped her with all the information she needed to know through other people's transcript.. she need to give back to the thread.. Shalom!

I am aware that students who have recieved their I-20 are preparing for visa interview, and that is good. Let your preparation have substance, and be ready to talk as intelligent and cool-headed as much as you can. Know all you need to know about your chosen program, and be ready to say why that program is worth travelling to the US, and that "particular school" for. (I hope you didn't pick those yeye program. Some programs will literally cause your visa rejection; so I hope you chose well?)

Don't talk too much that you forget the need and importance of listening! Listen, and listen and aswer accordingly! No go do I sabi all infront of Oyibo oo; he/she will knock you down! Just make sure your answers are brief and have substance; give convincing points.

If you have never made straight eye-contacts before, do prepare to do so with the consular.

Dress as a responsible person; don't pretend. The only impression you need to make is that, "I am here to convince the you that my application for a US student visa is purely genuine, and I am going to the US to study, and I have what it takes to do just that" Nothing else! If there is anything else, nobody cares. And even if you are applying for the Visa simply to run and never return, do make the impression that you are going for studies.

If you are a man/guy/boy (well, maybe others, you know?) shave two days before your interview. Not a day before it. The two days interval would have helped you look fresh, unlike when you shave yesterday.

Do not be afraid, for you will experience the very thing you are afraid of. What we fear usually happen. Isn't it?
Watch short videos on youtube on how to remain calm in situation that arouse emotional tension.
Do not be afraid, I beg you oo.

Other thing I would like to say is that. Getting a US visa requires either luck or favour ((both are the same (luck is a worldly term that in our religions we call favour). That is, aside from your preparation)), and it has to do with whether or not it is your time, and if the travelling align with your destiny (now, I am not preaching; I am simply telling you basic philosophy of life, of chasing of dreams and of attaining them).
If you can do dedicated fasting and prayer like a week or so before your interview, for successful visa interview outcome, do so. (This is not a requirement, please! I am not even recommending, as this doesn't guarantee positive visa outcome).

I want to hear your story after the interview, and so, write to me if you want to. Oh, one more thing: first, second or third visa denial is not "final denial". Never take visa rejection for such. One of my best friends was denied 8 times before he got his student visa; he got it the 9th time. He is in US now, hail and happy, and progressing in his pursuit of education and happiness! If you are denied, there is always a way. Always! Write to me!

I wish you good success!
E.
Well structured write up.. May God bless you and increase that wisdow of yours use in putting this together.

Visa approved today @ Lagos Embassy, 7am. I never expected it to be that short. I've been a silent observer here for about 2 months now and this is my first post. Here goes..
Vo: (after looking at my i20) so, which of the areas in Electrical Engineering are you interested in?
Me: Renewable Energy
Vo: okay (nods and types for a few), so why did you decide on Renewable Energy?
Me: (deep breath) okay, so I chose Renewable Energy cos it's part of my long term career goal to invest in the power sector of my home country by establishing a start up that will provide photo-efficient solar panels and it's accompanying devices to generate electricity for domestic homes and small retail stores (she kept nodding all through)
Vo: okay (types for a while again), so why Portland State University?
Me: I chose Portland State for a number of reasons actually. First of all, the school operates the quarter calendar system which is faster since classes run all year long. Secondly, my Dept offers to teach embedded systems programming as part of the Renewable Energy graduate track, which is quite rare, and learning to program an embedded system will make me a more versatile MSc holder (I was expecting her to cut me short but she kept listening and smiling, typing intermittently...I started smiling back and almost stopped talking but decided to finish...gave the last reason about research stuff).
She handed me my i20, SEVIS and collection slip and said the usual "...3 working days...need this at the airport... " I didn't hear cos she spoke fast and in a low tone.
So, that's it.
I noticed alot of people being denied today for avoidable reasons. Guys, cover your grounds. Don't just go cos people are going. It's good to pray, but work also (I did both). I learned today that the first few secs determine alot, your appearance and demeanor also, you don't want to create a negative impression before you even get to speak. The interview is not as dreadful as alot of you describe it to be. Good luck to prospective applicants.

Thanks for the transcript may God bless your journey

I am a silent reader of this thread and i really benefited from this thread. Praise be to Allah.I had my interview on friday
and it was approved. Visa issued Yesterday. This is what transpired between the consular officer and i.
ME- Good Morning
CO- Good Morning.
ME- How are you doing?
CO- Fine thanks.
ME- You welcome
CO- Pass your passport and i-20
ME- Sure
CO- Why are you going to the US.
ME- I am going to the US to undertake a course of studies in International business trade and commerce at Kalamazoo college
in Michigan
CO- How did you heard about this school?
ME- I made an intensive search online using academic websites such as usnews, Princeton reviews and Peterson and then i narrowed down my search based
on schools that offer experiential learning. Afterwards i consulted the schools website to gain information about their application process.
CO- Why did you choose this school?
me- I chose this school because they offer hands on learning components through excellent internships programs and summer study abroad programs. I believe
this will help me learn from expert and also widen my employability skills. Among the schools that accepted me this school offered me the most financial
aid package.
CO- How many schools did you consider?
ME- four. Bates college, Northeastern University, Kalamazoo and UMaine.
CO- Why did you pick Kalamazoo over northeastern
ME- I prefer to study at a liberal arts college because of small teacher to student ratio which allows for better interaction between faculty and students.
C0- Northeastern is a liberal arts college.
ME- Please madam northeastern university is not a liberal arts college. it is a research university offering masters and doctorate programs.
C0- How do you intend funding your education
ME- The school has offered me a scholarship and my parents will foot the remaining.
C0- She typed for a while and said i have approved your application.
ME- Thank you and have a great day.
CO- You too.

Confirmento.. Congrats Bro and thank you for sharing your transcript in full..Remain Bless!

The journey has been very stressful for me, I started following this page when I applied for my visa about a week ago. I had to cancel the appointment fill another one and thank God, they were still spaces available for today.
Fast forward to today, I stayed with a friend of mine at onikan, I slept early after praying woke around 4am,prayed cos I was scared of being denied and prayed over my documents and couldn't sleep back. I totally disagree with that.. if everybody choose to be silent even when they got their visa approved, how you learn a thing or 2 from their transcript, how will you be able to prepare your self and your own transcript and lastly, how will the up coming prospective student/new comers know how to answer VO's questions..? if you can sincerely answer these questions within your self, you will look for handcuff and start arresting those silent follower and those who don't like sharing their transcripts after benefiting from the thread cool

i appreciate your comment but do not agree to every detail. I know most Nigerians depend so much on prayer...person wey no get CV and him dey look for work, all he does is go for night vigil, That job will never come. i have seen so many people prepare hard for interviews and the VO will ask them the simplest of questions....I was amazed to see someone's transcript with the question "What is the 2nd law of Motion". My brother, in this situation , na this guy prayer work . One should prepare well and pray to God that the question VO ask is what you know. All of us who got visa did not know everything. we were only lucky we were asked what we know...thats where prayer comes in......During my interview, i was asked just one major question and it was a question i was well prepared for.. cool

Lol...typical Nigerian, always stand aside to castigate and point out our problems but never do anything to salvage the situation.
Funny how you listed all those things above without mentioning that their young able bodied men like you didn't leave the country then for a greener pasture and at the same time hoping those left behind would be busy inventing electricity, oil, nuclear energy and automobiles.
Why didn't you leave America for Nigeria after your studies to contribute your own quota to the country? Were you born in America? What have you done to help Nigeria be a better country like the country you are in?
You once posted here that you've both American and British citizenship,so I'm asking you this, while those people were developing their country, were they looking for other nationals citenzenship here and there.
I see you as someone who has this holier than thou attitude, egocentric and ...
Don't come here to be the type of Nigerians that rant online while enjoying the comfort of America. If you're so pained and so bothered about Nigeria, there's nothing stopping you from booking the next available flight to Nigeria and let's build the nation together to be a better place for us all to dwell in, since our leaders have failed us,keep failing us and will always fail us .

Sir deemarc, You are so on point, i give you a big round of applause with a standing ovation. you nailed the issue and may God bless for those points.. Cheers!

You can pray from now till tomorrow, it will have no impact on a US VO if you are not qualified for the visa. If it was by prayer, every member of winners chapel, mountain of fire and redeemed would be US citizens today.

I totally disagree with your quote, prayer is the key to everything, believe it or not. Have seen people who went for interview unprepared and they got their visa(that is God's favour and the work of prayers) and have also seen people who went for interview well prepared and they were delayed.. so what can you say about that? Well if prayers doesn't work for you or you don't believe in prayers, As for me it does work well for me and i believe it does work for other people as well.

happyday:

Finally, you're here. Holywood and your 'yankee' friends have made you believe these people are as outgoing and friendly as Nigerians. Turns out you're in for a shock. People smile at you, engage in small talk, but that's it. Everyone has got their cross to bear. You can't blame them.

You miss the happy atmosphere in Nigeria. You stay on calls to your family and babe(s) and boo(s) back home. Depends on how bad you are. You can't go knock on your neighbor's door, so you both can play PES. Or talk about the latest wack Davido track!

It's raining, and your American friends don't get it when you say 'weather for two', or 'based on logistics'. You see a sea of white heads, and wonder why your skin color is different. You wonder why you weren't born here. You engage someone in a convo, tell them you're from Nigeria, and they ask 'so tell me, how's Africa like?'. Damn!

You've always thought you were good looking, even handsome sef. But everyday, you see way hotter, cleaner chicks and dudes. You were always celebrated in your Nigerian University for your grades, work ethic, romantic pick-up lines or sexy legs. But here, nobody gives a flying hmm-hmm. You can't raise your hands, and ask questions the way your American peers are doing. Like you'll do in Naija, and feel like a don. You don't want to misyarn, look dumb. Or both. So, you keep shut.

You're average in everything. Every damn thing.

You graduated top of your class back in Naija, but here you're, struggling to keep up with term papers and homework. Worst part is, some of your classmates are not even putting in the effort. In fact, most of them. Suddenly, the phrase 'American citizen' suddenly makes sense to you. You now know there are as much types of visa as the letters in the English alphabet, and that your F1 is just at the low rung of the ladder.

You don't get some benefits. You might never do. Just for one simple reason. You were never born here!! Classes, and TV, and employers keep reminding you of this every day.

And then you remember Naija; home sweet home. You remember what your friends hail you for. Guys hitting on you, girls stealing glances at you, your book-smartness, your looks. And even your family. You just wanna go back home.

But hold on! Your peeps are back home are "happy for you", you don't use crap data, you're 24/7 on the Internet, NEPA (or whatever) don't show their prowess every 5 mins. Heck, you don't even know who supplies the electricity around here. Maybe straight from Washington or it's local. And frankly, you don't care.

The air here seems to smell different.

Though you can't cuddle or make out in the cold weather, at least you have a safe bed you can sleep in. The sirens remind you of your relative safety. Then, you wonder if it's possible for you to have both worlds? Be with your family, and also get a grad degree in a sane climate like you have here.

When shit gets this real, and they will, what do you do? Go online and watch more porn, come to Nairaland, and troll the pages?

Lughhh.. grin very sweet write-up, I just dey laugh as i dey ready your story, even i still dey laugh as i dey type. You are a good writer with Great talent.. i enjoy your story.. grin
Onoa Visa approval.
Hello house!.To the Glory of God, my Visa was approved today 1st of June at the Lagos consulate!! As i have learnt a lot from the transcripts on this thread, i decided to share mine for the benefit of others.
My appointment was for 7a.m, but I arrived few minutes after 6 am. Everything was quick and orderly and I was done with all by 7:20am.

I was next in line to be interviewed by the VO in window 3 (a young pretty Lady). Here is my transcript:

VO: good morning
Me: good morning (with a smile)

Vo: please pass me your documents
Me: passed them (passport, i20 and sevis receipt)

Vo: I'm going to be asking you a lot of questions (in a slightly jovial tone)

..I was shocked because I don't know why she said that..
Me: okay( guess she just wanted to chat)

Vo: Why are you going to the U.S.?
Me: I am going for my master's degree in Interdepartmental Nutrition with emphasis in Biochemical and Molecular Nutrition at University of Nebraska- Lincoln

Vo:When did you graduate?
Me:Nov. 2015

Vo:What have you been doing..(told her Nysc)
Me: I went for my compulsory youth service which I finished in April this year.

Vo:Where did you work during your Nysc?
Me: I worked as a laboratory assistant in the pathology department of a health and diagnostics centre at Ikeja.

Vo:What tests did you carry out in the path. department?
Me: (wasn't expecting this question) tests for malaria, typhoid,....(thinking)..tests for pathogens in stool, ..Renal function tests, Liver Function tests...

Vo: (nodding) then cuts in..What did you study in your undergrad?
Me: Biochemistry

Vo: so tell me, what is Biochemistry and tell me the courses you did and explain some?
Me: Biochemistry is the study of chemical processes that take place in living things such as plants, animals, humans (in my mind, I was like, thank God I prepared for this question)...i studied general biochemistry, so I was introduced to different fields that relate to Bch such as food Bch, plant Bch, industrial Bch, pharmacology, enzymology. I was also taught nutritional Bch which I picked interest in and am going for, for my Ms...started talking about how studies show importance of nutrition to good health.. She just kept nodding and staring at me and typing. I made sure I maintained eye contact.

Vo:How did you get to know about the school?
Me: I found out about the school through extensive research on the internet and by streamlining my search based on my area of interest and the availability of funding opportunities.

Vo:How many schools did you apply to?
Me:5

Vo:Name them?
Me:Uni of Neb., Uni of Delaware, Uni of Kentucky, Texas tech uni and Cornell Uni.
..she said something about Cornell, like her dad works there or went there..i didn't reply

Vo:Have you travelled outside Nigeria?
Me: No

Vo:Have you travelled inside Nigeria?
Me: (really?)Yes, I schooled in Ogun state and i have been to my state of origin, Edo state,.. didn't feel like mentioning others.

Vo:Who is sponsoring you?
Me:I was offered a research assistantship which covers my tuition, health insurance and offers me a generous stipend...my mum would be paying for the rest.

Vo:What does she do?
Me: She owns an English teaching support service..she publishes books and offers training in English to students and staff of pri and sec schools..

Vo: gave me the white paper, ..said some things I honestly didn't hear, about when to pick up the visa (sometime next week) and I would need these(my i20 and sevis receipt)....
Me: (smiling) Okay, thank you, have a nice day..

Vo: have a safe flight.

Thanks to all those keeping this thread alive and thanks to SirRiddy for reviewing my SOP back then.

Am sure whatever I would say has been said before already, but I'd like to emphasize, that prayer is very important, it definitely helped boost my confidence and gave me the grace to remember and fluently answer the questions, because she really didn't pause at anytime, the questions just kept coming. Preparation is also key, although I prayed hard to be asked only 3 questions (lol), I made efforts to prepare very well for any question that might be asked. Best wishes to future applicants!.

Profile: GPA- 4.52/5.00
GRE: V- 155, Q- 155, AWA- 3.5
TOEFL: 111

Very sweet transcript.. God bless you for sharing your transcript in full.. Cheers!

[quote segunojo866 bro, good response but i strongly disagree that its more difficult to obtain visa for bachelors. Dnt put fear in his mind, its very easy to obtain a student visa for both master, bachelors and phd. The important thing is applying to a top accredited public school, scoring good on standard test or if possible having a scholarship. Thanks
@segunojo866, Don't argue with people that knows more than you.. You are just getting started going for Undergraduate in the US and some of the Guru's on this thread are possibly doing their masters in the US or even finish their PhD and come back home or even working there. So when it comes to visa experience, they know more than you and that's why we call them gurus in the house, so i suggest you sit back and learn from them because they have pass through it and they have vast experience about it. funny enough Lagosismyhome happens to be among the Great guru's in the house, she is someone you would like to listen to. So keep calm and listen to their advice.

Bless you Bro!
Booklets now a bit available.

Those hoarding it like dollars are releasing it little by little.

Why can't they make our Passport to be valid for 10yrs just like other developed countries. It will reduce the stress of renewing every 5yrs. I know so thiefs in the Govt will not allow that to happen because of the money they steal everyday from immigration.

Pease comments good nairaland people. Am going for interview soon
Bros, i will advice you prepare your transcript to the best of your knowledge and have the gurus in the house vet it for you once and for all. And if there is need for any adjustment or correction they will let you know and also give you an ideal on how the response should look/sound like, not coming here with.. why this school? then tomorrow why this course? Just read previous transcript and get your self prepared to the best of your knowledge and someone will help you out from there.
Good luck.. shalom!

Congrats on ur visa.but y d XXXX state university. Y hiding it? U no want make others benefit? This place is meant to give info that can help others, its more than a testimony ground.
Don't mind them jare, we have talked about this XXXYYZZ and Bla..bla..bla thing and some of them are still doing it which is so annoying. i mean no body force them to share their transcript, we are all one big family trying to help each other and yet some individuals will come here sharing Bla..bla..bla and XXXYYZZ with the aim of giving back to the thread and i keep asking how can new comers/prospective student benefit from that? in my opinion it doesn't "make any sense" because you got all the details you need from this thread in achieving your dream goal and when is time to give back to the thread they start Speaking in tongues. Anyway, i rest my case and my Slogan still remains what is what doing is what doing WELL..

Shalom!

Hello everyone in the house, just a little advice for everyone.. if you are sharing your TRANSCRIPT. please kindly type your response to the VO in full not Bla..bla..bla.. it's so annoying, how you expect people to learn from that? if other has posted bla bla bla, you won't have been able to prepare your own transcript or learn 1 or 2 things from their transcript. Pls i urge everyone who choose to share their transcript to type their response/answers in full so that other can benefit fully from it. What is what doing is what doing WELL.

Thanks folks..
