This is a very good article.

The poster is very accurate and spot on. This is a serious problem.

I can authoritatively say that the problem of over-parenting has eaten deep into our university system.

I regularly meet with parents whose children have bad grades as a result of unseriousness. You can not but feel sorry for Nigeria if you see how these parents try to use money to change their children's poor grades.

God help us.
Education / Re: Why Are Nigerian Lecturers Wicked To Their Students? (Photo) by chire(m): 8:23am On Jan 11, 2015
I dont think nigerian lecturers are as mean as being portrayed. Most are not mean at all. Students are examined with certain standards which can't be lowered.

The Problem is that a good number of students are not serious;..especially those who attended private schools for their secondary education. It is shocking to see students with distinctions in their SSCE results find it so difficult to solve very basic problems and unable to cope in the university.

There are also a lot who forget that they came to school to study..they tend to lose focus and play around, party, etc and only remember to study when exams are about a week away.

How can one study a 16 week course in less than a week and expect to understand everything?

In Federal universities,if students are not satisfied with their grades, they can write a letter to their HOD requesting for their scripts to be reviewed. In most instances (at least in my dept), the affected scripts are reviewed another colleague knowledgable in the course. Most times of course, the students claims lack merit.

Sports / Re: Tb Joshua's Video Prophecy On Nigeria Vs Guinea Football Match by chire(m): 8:33pm On Oct 09, 2011
Thank you so much for this video.

It is clear that the man is not a fraud. He had been accurate all along. He never predicted a particular scoreline. He only kept on emphasizing that the match was not favourable to us.

He said the first team that scores will take the day, He was correct. Although it was a draw; but that was all Guinea needed to qualify at the expense of Nigeria.

He said he saw the other side shouting at the end of the match, needless to say he was correct as well.

Its unfortunate that the authorities did not listen to him. What a shame!

Sports / Re: AFCON Qualifier: Nigeria Vs Guinea Conakry (2 - 2) On 8th October 2011 by chire(m): 7:37pm On Oct 08, 2011
This was a thoroughly interesting football match. It is unfortunate that we did not win. In my opinion, i think the coach should be held responsible for "snatching a draw from the jaws of victory".

1) I think he was too hard on Enyeama. So many people begged him to forgive and forget; but he refused. I think in his effort to instill discipline into the team, he is becoming too hard and strict. He seems to be the type that finds it difficult to forgive.

2) His changes during the match raises questions about his tactical competence at this level. Why was the midfield so weak? Why did he remove Joel Obi? I honestly can not remember the last time i saw a midfield collapse like a pack of cards. Guinea could have easily scored two goals during the injury time alone.
Although i think the Guineans were lucky not to have conceeded a goal in the first half, it was obvious they came with a game plan.

3) Why was Haruna Lukman not invited? Was he injured? Or does he still harbour grudges with him?

As regarding TB Joshua's prediction before the match, i think we should have taken he seriously. At a time when everybody was looking forward to the eagles beating Guinea, Only he came out a week before the match and said that the match would not be favourable for Nigeria. He should be credited for sounding the alarm when everyone was over-confident.

On the overall, i think this elimination is good for Nigerian Football. Hopefully, this lack of qualification has brought us to earth, and i hope we now realise that we are not as super as we think we are. The NFF should use this opportunity to carry out a "post-mortem" on this ill-fated nations cup, and if necessary, carry out a restructuring and reengineering on the super eagles technical crew.
Career / Re: Are Second Class Lower Graduates Still Relevant In Our Society? by chire(m): 10:33am On Sep 08, 2011
Yes Second Class lower graduates are still very relevant in the society. Don't be discouraged by your grade.

Ten years ago, i gradated with a 3rd class first degree. Except my family, Almost every person wrote me off.

Today, i have a PhD degree, and i lecture in the university i obtained my BSc from. (The very same department).

The fact that you have a low first degree grade today does not mean you can't be a person of importance tomorrow.

@ aisha2

you always speak intelligently, thts admirable.

Ok, now for my two cents,

What happened today is a national embarassment. Plain and simple

I think the situation now is to try to make the best out of an embarassing situation. I think expecting the materials to come in on thursday for a national election the size of a country like nigeria was a bit "dumb".

I'm going to have to blame Jega for this mess, All this talk about a delay in arrival of papers into the country is just shifting the blame.

I will advise them on how to prepare for the presidential election.

The ballot papers should arrive secretly in the country in the early hours of wednesday april 6th 2011.

JEGA and Heavily armed solders (the type that came to welcome late president Yar Adua last year february  from Arabia) should be on ground to receive the materials.

The military convoy should move the materials to a top secret and secure location (preferably a military cantonment) for safe keeping.

By 0300 hours on saturday morning , several chartered planes should be used to fly the papers to the various regions of the country.

INEC officials and Military personnel again should be on ground to receive the ballot papers at the varoius airports and transport them to the varoius INEC state headquarters.

That way, we would avoid a repeat of the embarassment we suffered today.

Hope the INEC will store the voting materials in the military barracks, and restrict the politicians from comming anywhere near the materials.

Romance / Re: She's Asking Me For Blackberry Subscription Money by chire(m): 12:11pm On Feb 17, 2011
Mr Poster

Be a man and stop making a fool of yourself on the internet.

Whats the big deal in a girl you met and interacted with asking you to help her with three thousand naira so she can renew her bis subscription? Is tht why you are trying to ridicule her?

At least give her credit for being honest and straight with you tht she wanted to use it to renew her bis. She did not not start lying tht she wanted to use it for hospital treatment or tht somebody died or stuff like that.

You don't have to meet anyone face to face before helping the person out. You don't have to know or meet children living in an orphanage before sending the orphanage a cheque.

If you have the money and you want to help her, help her. If you dont want to, simply say you can not afford it. No need to come to internet to ask for advise.

Its not a crime to be in need of money. If she could afford 3k, she would not have asked you to help her.

Here we go, the man has declared his intentions.
Is there anybody else out there doing as much as Babangida?

Do not be surprised if Babangida becomes our president. So far he has shown that he's serious and determined to lead this nation accordingly.
With all the degrading and bashing from all corners, he refuses to deviate from attaining his goal. It is also easy to tell from his actions and body language that he recognizes his past and badly wants to do something about it.

If you think IBB is returning back to power because he's broke, you then must be from another planet.

Whether his intentions are sincere or not, nobody but God can tell. And the same thing goes for any other politician in Nigeria.

Again, for now I refuse to support any candidate, but one must learn how to embrace reality in Nigeria.

Babangida continues to do what he has to do and so far I give him credit for his actions.

I very much agree with you. With his commitment and determination, i think i will give him a chance to right his wrong.
I think thats what he wants to do.
Babangida doesn't need money. He just wants to right his wrong.
I won't be surprised if he ends up being the president in 2011.

tolutara:

I believe a lot of the good Men are taken,

I remember 8 years ago when I asked  my husband out on the first date, I had all my girlfriends laughing at me. But boy, I saw a good thing and I went for it. He is a wonderful and good man. They did not catch the vision, I did.  He was not driving the best car or so I was told. 2 of those friends are still asking the same above question. Where are the good men?

Now dear hubby can have any car he wants.

So poster, Make hay while the sun shines.

I admire you.You are just like my fiancee.

When my fiancee took the bull by the horns and asked me out point blank for a relationship just two days after meeting for the first time in her life. Her friends thought she had totally lost it. I was a student, and i couldn't stand up to the calibre of men asking her out (financially).

Now her friends envy her. The ones who were most vocal about her making a move on me are still single, passed from one man to another while she is getting ready to go to the alter.

My advice to women will be this :-

We are in a new age. A revolutionary one. If you see a man that is good. Do not sit there and wait for him to come and meet you. There are some men you can do all the shakara in the world for; while there are some men that you must quickly for yourself once you come across them.

While a Masters degree holder might not necesarily be better or more competent than a Bachelors degree holder, it is very advisable to go for Masters if the opportunity present itself.
If not for any other reason, we live in a very competitive world where there are so many applicants chasing very few jobs. So the employers always raise the recruitment standards just to drop so many applicants. Some companies now strictly target only Masters degree holders.
Even if you get a good job with your bachelors, your colleagues with a Masters degree may enjoy more rapid promotions than you, etc.
So ultimately, i think a Masters degree is very beneficial in the long run.

The Game is now on.
I have been following this thread with interest.
Rokiatu's response is a very intelligent one,and now we have to see the quality of vga's "game".
Rokiatu has responded the way a cool lady should respond. You can not expect her to accept like that and say yes on a very public forum.
Ladies that you speak with privately will not say yes at once not to talk of the lady you speak with on an internet forum.
Rokiatu has dignity and pride to protect.Even if she is dying for you,she will not say yes like that on nairaland.
The fact that she saw the thread yesterday, and decided not to respond immediately says a few things.
She should have cut him off immediately. Her claim that she thot it was a joke doesn't hold water as far as i am concerned.
Maybe she was guaging public perception on this matter, before deciding on her next step.
Maybe she was weighing her options.
Whatever the reason is,It is obvious that Rokiatu's emotions are now engaged, and she has given you an opportunity to show your game by offering you friendship.
I'm sure she is waiting to see vga's next move. And so am i.
Grab her offer with both hands.Things can only get better.
I expect vga to send Rokiatu his email, and request an email from Rokiatu.
Afterall, she has accepted to be his friend.

@ poster,

I can see that you are in love with this guy. That's what it seems.
You are even jealous that he bought something for another lady.
Unfortunately, the more you try get rid of him,the more you will think of him, and thus the deeper you fall in love with him.
If you are in a relationship with "a sweet guy", and yet you still think about this naija man, then, there's probably nothing more anyone can do about it.
Forget about the fact that he has a fiance and tell him how you are feeling.
You are not asking him to leave his fiance.you are just telling him how you feel. They are two different things.
Talk to him first and get his side of the story. From his response, you will know his mind.
The fact that he bought a car for his fiance does not mean that he has no feelings for you.
It could even be that he really likes you and was(is) scared of your brother.
Best Wishes.

If after 4 years of dating he decided to introduces harsh new rules instead of opening discussions on how to marry you, then i think there is a problem somewhere.
I would be inclined to beleive he is gently trying to ease you out.He seems to be getting (or already) fed up of you,but is not man enough to come out and tell you point blank.
I don't think he is testing you.
I would advice you to consider cutting your loses with him,and moving on with life.
You deserve a man who would want you to be around him 24/7, not one who will want to keep you at arms length.
Besides, the fact he said his friends see him as a fool shows he values his friends opinions. He can't seem to think for himself.
he's not man enough.
I dont even think he's a man at all.

Romance / Re: Is It Proper For My Girlfriend To Sleep In A Guys House? by chire(m): 5:49pm On Feb 07, 2010
@ poster

I feel for you.
Let me share a personal story with you.
(part 1)
A close female family friend came visiting london from lagos 2 yrs ago,and insisted on comming to check on me and go round manchester and sleep at my place.I was pleased cos i hadn't seen her in yrs and i encouraged her to come over. She told her fiance and her fiance did not seem to object.
Long story short, she came, spent the night at my place.I allowed her sleep in my room, while i slept downstairs in the sitting room
NOTHING HAPPENED.
the next morning, the fiance strted fighting with her that she had definately slept with me.he argued that it was not possible for us not to have "done it".BUT WE DID NOT DO ANYTHING.it took a lot of pleading, swearing on the girls part to calm the man down.he eventually did,but he always raised the incident anytime they had an arguement. It got to a stage that the lady told me on phone that "if something had happened that night, then perhaps all this attitude from his man would have been bearable".
(part 2)
last year that same girl came to visit london again.she said she would have loved to come to manchester again, but she had promised her man she would not come to manchester to see me.so i decided to come to london and visit her and spend the night (just as she did the previous yr).she said i should please come.she said afterall, she did not promise her fiance that she would not allow me to come and see her in london.
she was always sitting on the floor and i asked why.she said her lower back was paining her.later at night i massaged her hands and fingers, and asked her to lie on her stomach so i could massage her lower back.she complied and said she was feeling good.
i after a short while,i offered to massage her entire back and asked her to remove her top.she did.then off went her bra (she probably removed it when i asked her cos she was lying on her stomach and felt she was safe since her boobs were pressed on the mattress).to cut the long story things progressed and we ended up making love throughout the night.

the above are two senarios where i spent the night alone with the same girl,in one i did not sleep with her,the other i slept with her despite she was engaged.

on the overall, from my experience i would say that it depends on whether the guy chooses to be a gentleman or not.But as a general rule,if an adult lady choses to spend the night in an adult mans place for whatever reason, then anything can and most often does happen.we're human beings, not logs of wood.
comming specifically to your case,i think for your girl to expose herself to that kind of temptation is a very bad sign.her excuse that there was no light even makes things more suspicious.ladies don't go to sleep in other men's house because "nepa took the light".furthermore,if you had not called her,she would not have told you about it.
i think you should be a man and assume she is getting it over there and act accordingly.you can even pretend to be really angry at her and instigate a break-up to guage her reaction and remorsefulness.if you really want to marry her,you need to be very firm.
