ABEOKUTA — A 46-year-old Pastor, Olamide Sobowale, of Glory Church of Christ Aladura, Oke-Itoku, Abeokuta, Ogun State, has been ordered to be remanded in prison for allegedly raping a woman while bathing in his church backyard.

Pastor Sobowale, who was arraigned before a Magistrate Court sitting in Isabo, Abeokuta, yesterday, was accused of raping one Dupe Makinde, 30, who lives in Isaje, Abeokuta, while taking a spiritual bath allegedly recommended by the pastor.

The prosecuting counsel, Paul Etusi, told the court that the accused grabbed the complainant while she was in a bathroom within the church premises and raped her.

Etusi said the complainant had already put the soap on her face as she began bathing when the pastor suddenly entered the bathroom, grabbed and raped her with soap on her face.

According to Etusi, the accused had told Mrs. Makinde that he had a vision about the her and asked her to come for deliverance in his church.

He said: “He asked the woman to come to the church to take a spiritual bath for her deliverance, but, while the complainant was taking her bath, the accused barged into the bathroom, grabbed the woman and raped her.

“The accused has committed an offence contrary to section 357 and punishable under section 358 of criminal code of law of Ogun State, Nigeria, 2006.”

Magistrate A. Araba after listening to the prosecuting counsel, ordered that the accused be remanded in prison till he gets advice from the Director of Public Prosecution and adjourned the case till September 16,2013.

OWERRI — Priests of the Catholic Ecclesiastical Province of Owerri, have started strategizing to tackle the anti-life legislation recently signed into law by Governor Rochas Okorocha.

Vanguard investigation revealed that the clerics held their first meeting last Thursday at Maria Assumpta Cathedral, Owerri.

Feelers from the meeting chaired by His Grace, Dr. Anthony J. V. Obinna, revealed that one of the major issues discussed was the controversial abortion law foisted on the people by the state.

One of the priests said: “We met to properly position ourselves to effectively battle the controversial abortion law recently signed by Governor Rochas Okorocha.”

Meanwhile, Archbishop Obinna has called for immediate abrogation of the state laws containing what he termed “anti-life legislation” signed by Okorocha and his predecessor, Chief Achike Udenwa in 2012 and 2007 respectively.

Archbishop Obinna, who was visibly angry as he spoke on a number of issues, including the controversial abortion law and this year’s Odenigbo Lecture, insisted that all anti-life laws in the state must be abrogated.

“We are calling for immediate abrogation of all anti-life legislations in the state. Although the church will not be mirred in the nation’s murky waters of partisan politics, it will, however, continue to demonstrate interest in the nation’s democratic process for the common good of the citizenry.”

He expressed regret that after beating a regret that followed public outcry in 2010, the State House of Assembly eventually legalized the evil of abortion, Governor Rochas Okorocha quietly signed the state Law number 12 of 2012.

According to the fiery Archbishop, this new law, which was signed May 29, 2012, Nigeria’s Democracy Day, contains obnoxious and lethal provisions.

“This new law contains obnoxious and lethal provisions. This law threatens many conceived but unborn children with imminent death. This is unacceptable, anti-life and unchristian,” Obinna said.

The Catholic cleric equally descended on former Governor Udenwa for assenting to “the Gender and Equal Opportunity Law Number 7 of 2007”.

The cleric noted that some sections of the law also legalized abortion without considering the right of the conceived, unborn child or the helplessness of the unborn baby.

He said: “Since abortion amounts to murder of the helpless, hapless child, we as God fearing people in Imo State, cannot standby and allow this law to rampage our society in the name of Women’s Reproductive and Gender Rights.”

On the forthcoming Owerri Archdiocesan Day and Odenigbo Lecture, Obinna explained that the former vice chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Professor Peter Ejiofor, had been chosen as the lecturer, while the topic is “Igbo progressive welfare”.

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) on Friday compelled banks to buy dollars at N160.5 per dollar, in a bid to halt the four day depreciation of the naira at the interbank foreign exchange market. The unusual intervention forced the interbank exchange rate to N162.05 per dollar on Friday from N163.7 per dollar on Thursday, translating to 165 kobo appreciation for the naira.

This was in sharp contrast to the steady depreciation suffered by the naira from Monday to Thursday. From N161.47 per dollar the previous week, the naira depreciated by 183 kobo to N163.7 on Thursday.

Miffed by this trend, and the likelihood that it would persist, the CBN entered the interbank market selling dollars to banks. Investigation revealed that the intervention was conducted between 1pm and 1.30 pm, just before the market closed by 2pm. Foreign exchange dealers who confirmed this development to Vanguard, under condition of anonymity, said the apex bank came in heavily, and practically forced dollars on banks.

According to them, unlike previous interventions, where the apex bank usually request for banks’ two way exchange rate quote, and sell to banks with attractive exchange rate, this time, the apex bank just called each bank, and sold specific amount of dollars at specific exchange rate, ranging from N160 per dollar and N160.5 per dollar.

Although, the depreciation of the naira commenced on Monday, it aggravated on Thursday as the interbank rate rose from N162.275 per dollar to N163.7 per dollar, translating to 162.5 kobo depreciation.

Foreign Exchange Dealers told Vanguard that, the market expected the CBN to intervene on Thursday and as a result most banks sold significant portion of their dollar stock, with the expectation of replenishing it with cheap dollars from the CBN. But the apex bank did not intervene as expected on Thursday, and this left many banks with vulnerable dollar positions. This prompted flurry of demand, which triggered the depreciation of the naira at the close of business on Thursday.

Dealers however expressed satisfaction with the intervention, saying it is good for the market. “At the end of the day, everybody made money, and the market is stabilised”, a dealer, who spoke under anonymity, told Vanguard.

But a bank executive described the stability as artificial. Speaking he said, “It would have been good for the CBN to stop artificial fixing of the exchange rate and allow the naira to find its true level. But the action of the apex bank is necessary for economic security. If the CBN allows the naira to depreciate by ten per cent, the first thing that will happen is that prices will go up, the pump price of petroleum products will also rise, and this will further aggravate the rise in prices, the result would be mass protest across the nation. So we are buying economic security by fixing the naira artificially.”

CNN) - It's official: U.S. President Barack Obama wants lawmakers to weigh in on whether to use military force in Syria.

Obama sent a letter to the heads of the House and Senate on Saturday night, hours after announcing that he believes military action against Syrian targets is the right step to take over the alleged use of chemical weapons.

The proposed legislation from Obama asks Congress to approve the use of military force "to deter, disrupt, prevent and degrade the potential for future uses of chemical weapons or other weapons of mass destruction."

It's a step that is set to turn an international crisis into a fierce domestic political battle.

There are key questions looming over the debate: What did U.N. weapons inspectors find in Syria? What happens if Congress votes no? And how will the Syrian government react?

In a televised address from the White House Rose Garden earlier Saturday, the president said he would take his case to Congress, not because he has to -- but because he wants to.

"While I believe I have the authority to carry out this military action without specific congressional authorization, I know that the country will be stronger if we take this course, and our actions will be even more effective," he said. "We should have this debate, because the issues are too big for business as usual."

Obama said top congressional leaders had agreed to schedule a debate when the body returns to Washington on September 9. The Senate Foreign Relations Committee will hold a hearing over the matter on Tuesday, Sen. Robert Menendez said.

JOHANNESBURG (AFP) – South Africa’s presidency on Saturday denied reports that Nelson Mandela had been discharged from hospital and had returned to his Johannesburg home.

“Madiba is still in hospital in Pretoria, and remains in a critical but stable condition,” President Jacob Zuma’s spokesman said in a statement, denying reports from several news organisations that he had left the facility.

“At times his condition becomes unstable, but he responds to medical interventions.”

During Mandela’s 80-plus days in hospital, the presidency through Maharaj has been the official source of information about the condition of the 95-year-old anti-apartheid icon.

But updates have been infrequent and have offered few details, prompting frequent speculation.

At the end of July, Zuma’s office said Mandela was continuing to show signs of improvement after scares were reported.

Mandela was rushed to hospital on June 8 for a respiratory infection and has remained in critical condition for most of the time since.

His lung problems date back to his 27 years in apartheid jail, where he contracted tuberculosis as a political prisoner.

Madiba, as he is known by his clan name, has been in and out of hospital since last year, with lung related complications.

In December, he spent nearly three weeks in hospital where he was treated for a lung infection and gall stones.

But this is his longest hospitalisation since he walked free from jail in 1990 and went on to become the country’s first leader to be elected in all-race elections.

The global icon has received an outpouring of messages of support including prayers from clergymen and the general public.

Family members including his wife Graca Machel and ex-wife Winnie Madikizela-Mandela have been visiting his bedside at the private hospital in the capital Pretoria.

Hundred of people gathered outside the facility on his 95th birthday to wish him well and sing songs.

Mandela became South Africa’s first black president in 1994, after leading talks that ended the white minority rule. He only served a single four year term as president, stepping down in 1999.

The increasingly frail leader retired from public life in 2004 and has spent his time between his rural home in the Eastern Cape region and Johannesburg.
