Family / Re: Does A Woman Have The Right To Choose Not To Have Kids At All? by chiyo: 5:58am On Jun 17, 2010 |
many US and European men and women choose not to have kids. no problem in that. It really bothers me sometimes though. They tend to be professionals and smart people and u see them walking around with their dogs. while the low class in society are making so many babies. |

"Hilarious solution to PCHN problem" on the front page? why Seun? why not just don't put it on the front page AT ALL rather than post it there to ridicule it with your biased caption? why are you trying to sway people's opinions of the march before they actually get to read the topic? WHY? 1.I never claimed the rally to be a one end all solution to the problem. but i see it as a very positive step in achieving the solution. 2. your adjective was not invited and i'll rather not have the topic at all than have it twisted into something else. well i guess it's your website and your monopoly. but i do not think it's fair what you did. |

Kobojunkie: you can email the organizers. i'm sure they're looking for volunteers as well. if you don't have plans to be in naija, you can contribute by telling ur friends in naija to attend. I already answered your question (sorry for confusing you with richyblack). most citizens of other countries put pressure on their govts by rallying. it is no guarantee except only if the pressure is strong enough. i mean if it's meant to be a 1 million march and only 100 people show up, it won't have any effect. unless maybe the same 100 people do it again the next month etc and more people start to join in etc. it took 6 months of weekly protests by the german citizens for the berlin wall to fall. imagine this in naija. the govt will definitely not pretend not to notice it. the civil rights movement for AAs was successful because of their persistent protestations, sit ins etc. like they say, if you want something real bad, you will have to fight for it. i guess most nigerians have accepted their fate and are unwilling to fight for anything now. we have never been known for having an active citizenry. and this is an opportunity to prove ourselves active. |

GAR3TH: yea it's a peaceful demonstration. I am just a supporter and trying to help mobilize people. but that's a good point about the press! I think the rally is still in the beginning stages and there is time to hold press conferences and generate media awareness. |

Gani organized a 5 million march but only a mere 200 ppl showed up. what would you expect? it is sad and pathetic that nigerians are not active as they should be in a democratic govt. keep in mind that was also during a millitary rule. in my opinion Gani should go down in history as one of the few truly patriotic nigerians that ever lived. he was a david against goliath's army (according to the NYT. : http://www.nytimes.com/1988/10/28/world/lagos-journal-a-gleeful-david-faces-the-goliath-that-is-nigeria.html). I wish we nigerians could emulate citizens from other countries in the world in challenging and pressuring the govt. there is so much strength in numbers i tell ya this is an excerpt from a commentary during the Abacha/ gani saga: ". . .While there are some encouraging noises and the release of 9 political prisoners is a good start. . . the radical pro-democracy movement is so weak and is unable to put serious pressure on the military (200-300 people turned out in Lagos for the rally at which Gani Fawehinmi was arrested (and later released) -- hardly to Indonesian or South African levels of popular protest). http://h-net.msu.edu/cgi-bin/logbrowse.pl?trx=vx&list=h-africa&month=9806&week=c&msg=j3yQH4kuU2JFltfpY0T2iw&user=&pw= |

@Richyblack, by mere protesting, you are causing a change no matter how small. i'm assuming you're in the USA. each African American that "sat in" or demonstrated during the civil rights movement in the USA caused a small change of his/ her own. each protester at the infamous Monday demonstrations in east germany contributed to the pressure that caused the fall of the Berlin Wall (these dedicated citizens demonstrated every monday for 6 months), i can continue naming them but With this only 4 hour demonstration, if we get enough people, the best case scenario will be that the govt will acknowledge it, CNN will carry the news, pressure will be mounted on the govt and REAL action will be taken to to solve this PHCN problem. and in the least case scenario, your token will be a step in discouraging the lack of real democracy in the govt on issues like these (phcn etc.) For now, all focus should be on mobilizing people for the rally. Maybe in Sept, we will be talking about what comes next. you can send a quick email to the organizers, or click on the facebook link for more info. back2back: I sincerely sympathize with your view believe me. But I do not agree with it though. It is true that many nigerians are pessimistic like you are and have given up all hope for goodness in the country, but I know that change is possible. Change is possible if you believe in it and try to work towards it. No one can solve our problems except we the people of the country. the politicians won't stop embezzling overnight unless some action is taken by the citizens to stop it. Afterall, you are not being forced to march. you can very well remain in your home to wallow in your apathy. enjoy your jollof and exchange independence pleasantries with your neighbors in the darkness. You can do that, or you can decide to devote 3-5 hours of your time on independence day to do something positive for the country. to at least air your opinion in telling the politicians that enough is enough. OBJ was able to take 16billion because we Nigerian citizens are a very apathetic bunch. we do not care. we're not educated enough to understand that a country is a democracy only when common citizens are able to influence decision making. that's why the govt have been able to get away with all their crimes. BECAUSE WE FOLD OUR ARMS AND DO NOTHING ABOUT IT. we shouldn't let them get away with stealing. and here's a chance for you to contribute your little part. If we can't attend the rally, let's encourage those who are willing to rather than discourage them. when a thief comes to your house armed with guns and machetes, you have no power to keep them from looting your house or hurting your close ones. but you can should OLE OLE OLE for the world to come to your rescue. to prevent from from leaving with your possession. to weaken them and make them hesitate. This is an opportunity not only to challenge the looters, but also to reach out for help . If it very successful, the whole world will carry the news. you will hear it on CNN, BBC and definitely the govt will do something about it even if little (it took international and CNN reports for the govt to create EFCC to combat 419 remember?) . The greatest benefit to this rally, however, will be the reality that citizens are now able to exercise their democratic right in attempting to influence the government. pls I do not want this topic to turn into a debate thread. If you want to contest my words, create a topic for it and i will be more than glad to join in. This topic is meant solely for the purpose of mobilizing Nigerian citizens in support of the Light Up Nigeria cause. It is a voluntary movement. you don't have to join but you are encouraged to. There is great strength in numbers and this protest will be successful only if there is a great out turn. If you still have some doubts in the power of the people against bad govt, you can just join in the protest anyways. Afterall, many people religiously play the lottery knowing that there is only a slight chance at winning. Let's put that same drive and optimism into this cause. The opportunity cost is very little (just 4 hours of the holiday). Let's start the car engine and let God direct us along the highway. remember heaven helps those who help themselves. Please it is all for our benefit. Thank You |

What: Peaceful demonstration against PHCN Date: Thursday, October 1, 2009 Time:1:00pm - 4:00pm Location: Maryland Round about, Lagos Nigeria Street: Mobolaji Bank Anthony Road, Ikeja City/Town:Lagos, Nigeria Theme: Light Up Nigeria Email: napob-nigeria@hotmail.com http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=100199663213&ref=mf Yea it's easy to be pessimistic n say nothing will come of it. but it's a way of telling the govt enough is enough. power should be a right not a privilege in this 21st century. Education / Re: Nigerian Schools' Disciplinary System; How Effective Is It? by chiyo: 9:27am On Jul 10, 2009 |
first of all, most kids in naija at 13 yrs don't know squat about sex. It's not about the flogging it's more of the conservative cultural value in naija about sex. what their parents tell them, what they hear from friends etc. not flogging!?
sigh. the gangs in US and UK are found in the poor innercity. what are you trying to say that there is no poverty in the US and UK? and you're grossly exaggerating it. how can you compare kiddy gangs to armed robbers and area touts and then say you will rather have the naija version? how will your parents know that you're a gang member? of course if a UK or US parent or police finds out an underage child belongs in a gang he will be sent to juvenile corrections. that's a crime according to the law. if flogging were the end all solution to problems like you make it seem, after one flog by your parent, most students should be getting straight As, graduating from unis in batches and making naija a better country. I mean, they were flogged after all!! lol
this is a very subjective and political matter. all the things you mentioned as govt responsibilities (job creation, trainings etc) can be interpreted by the average US republican as a lazy man's dream. and what are these basics that you feel americans unfairly ask for if I may ask. again, US and Naija cultural and political ideals are very different. one's disciplinary standard is different from the other's own.
not true!! they might have a "better" standard of life with the quantity of food they eat and number of clothings they wear but the educational standards, parental guidance, etc are very sub par and can only be compared to the poor in naija. and why do you assume that most innercity kids are shooting and shanking? most of them just don't know what to do with their lives because they have no guidance and have fewer opportunities. they roam about but only a few are involved in such violence as shooting (please don't say 12-20. narrow that age bracket because it's so misleading. come on 12 yrs old shooting as if that's the norm here) and trust me, a lot of the innercity kids get whipped and beaten at home. they also have the highest rate of child abuse by their neglegent parents. mind you, despite all the immigrant sucess stories you hear, many are sad stories. most of the families do live in the inner cities and the kids gets beaten on a daily basis. just like many black american children and poor children in general that get beaten by their parents. it doesn't stop them from joining gangs or doing poorly in school i can tell you that. trust me my middle school was innercity. so i've experienced all that. most were kids of immigrant parents from latin america etc and black americans. etc they do get whooped and yelled at by their parents!! and my middle school was just bad with extremely low standardized test scores etc what I noticed is that the quality of student got better based on the students social class as i moved to HS and on to college.
see how you keep making this argument. armed robbers and all the negatives of naija is not caused by discipline but all the negatives of US is caused by it. i'm begining to wonder if this is worth the time. lol |

topup, I really do mean it when I say that u're a case. lol anways, i'm not a black male but I can answer the question. pretty much they like all of the above as long as it suits the girl in particular. the least preferred will be the shave followed by the afro. the weave comes first, then the curls and then braids. yea as much as they will say they prefer natural and hate weave. trust me if that were the case, all black women will be walking around with afros. lol I think your hair is long enough though don't think u require weave. you can also wear neat single braids and don't dye your hair. jet black or whatever color. I guess they prefer a lighter hair color shade (brown to blond) I hope my post helped u a bit in your quest to attract black men. lol like I said, you're a case! |

Nairaland / General / Re: Why Is There A Special Forum For Muslims? by chiyo: 10:53pm On Jul 09, 2009 |
it means islam has a minority status in NL. there are only a few muslims on here (compared to christians) so the point is to consolidate their topics in order to make them visible, at least. ex. if u go to walgreens or CVS store in US, there is a special isle for minority (black people etc) beauty products but no special isle for white people. it might seem segregated and racist but the point is so i can find black people product amidst a sea of white ppl products , there is a special section just for us black people. it is definitely not a superiority status. it's quite the opposite actually (ex. the religion board is filled with christian topics while the muslim topics are consolidated in the small child board). lol so it's the muslims that should be complaining lol anyways, i have a question for admins sef. why do my posts keep disappearing? |

FL Gators: elders get more respect in naija definitely, i agree, but at the expense of trust and self confidence of the youth. I think US adults are ok with commanding less "respect" than their naija counterpart. ex. only naija adults are referred to as "elders" as a title again, the definition of respect is different in naija than US. |
