They never wanted you to Marry their daughter at first they want someone better with more money and status it's not about tribal difference or religious views (Catholics can marry protestants). They already have someone better for their daughter and if the girl really love you she would have objected but I guess she didn't.
While dating the parents knew you're not of the same tribe neither are you a Catholic but they allowed you to be with their daughter which I know they were using you or something of that sought.
