Balon Dor was not relevant then and was more of a European trophy for also-rans. FIFA WPOTY was relevant. So Kanu remains our highest ranking player in WPOTY

Dude! TheGoodJoe: 20 Points of a 20-hour ordeal on Libyan soil Pt. 1
NFF Media October 14, 2024
NFF’s Director of Communications, Dr Ademola Olajire, provides a point-by-point account of how a keenly-anticipated Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match was relegated to a fiasco by Libyan federal authorities and Football Federation
1) The chartered ValueJet aircraft departed from the Victor Attah International Airport, Uyo at 11.55hours on Sunday, 13th October 2024, and landed at the Aminu Kano International Airport, Kano at 13.10hours, for the completion of immigration formalities and for the aircraft to refuel.
2) The aircraft took off from Kano at 15.18hours, for the 3 hours and 35 minutes flight to Benghazi, Libya, expecting to arrive a few minutes before 8pm Libya time.
3) Just as he was about to commence his initial approach into Benghazi, the captain (pilot) was instructed by the control tower that he could not land in Benghazi (despite having all the required landing papers and having completed all formalities before leaving Uyo and later, Kano, but should proceed to the Al-Abraq International Airport, even though the airport lacked the control navigators for landing at such hours. He complained that he was short on fuel but his words fell on deaf ears as he was told in stern manner that the directive was from ‘higher authorities.’
4) On landing at the Al-Abraq International Airport, in the small town of Labraq, at 19.50hours, it was clear that the airport was not a well-utilized facility. There were no scanning machines or the usual equipment for this service, and officials had to make do with mobile phones to scan passport data pages.
5) The delegation, which included 22 players and team officials; NFF President Alh. Ibrahim Musa Gusau; Deputy Governor of Edo State, Comrade Philip Shaibu; a couple of NFF Board members; NFF General Secretary, Dr Mohammed Sanusi; a couple of parliamentarians; a couple of NFF Management; a couple of media representatives and; a couple of stakeholders, was shown scant respect by the airport authorities who applied curt manners and stern tones.
6) It took over one hour for the team’s luggage to roll through the carousel, despite the fact that the bags and other items had already been hauled from the aircraft immediately on arrival.
7) No official of the Libyan Football Federation was at the airport to receive the delegation, as is the best practice globally. Airport officials could not answer the simple question on where the buses that would take the delegation members back to Benghazi (where the NFF had booked hotel rooms) were.
8.) When delegation members including the NFF President, Comrade Shaibu and Dr Sanusi attempted to venture outside the airport to ascertain if there were vehicles waiting for the team, they were stopped in the most uncouth of manners by airport security personnel.
9) Calls to the General Secretary of LFF, Mr. Abdul-Nasser by Dr Sanusi yielded no fruits as the former kept promising that the buses would arrive in ‘10 minutes’, which later became ‘two hours’, and afterwards, ‘three hours.’ Later in the evening, it was no longer possible to reach him on phone. Frustrated by this attitude, Dr Sanusi approached the security operatives to request that the team be allowed to go out and board the buses the NFF eventually hired. This request was rejected with insults. It took the intervention of the NFF dignitaries to prevent what would have escalated into a row as the NFF President himself was not spared when he heard exchange of voices between the security personnel and his General Secretary. This aggravated the tension and further frustrated the team.
10) Hour after hour, and with mounting frustration, delegation members, particularly the players, grew restless. There was no food or water provided by the LFF, or where to even procure these items, and there was no network or internet connection at the airport. These swiftly increased the level of frustration and anger.

You're spot on about the 2022 WC finals one of if not the best in the entire history of the tournament.
In terms of stature of players and quality of play 1998 still stands out for me. All the big names of that era brought their A game. Pity the final was a one sided anti-climax. |

The loss to Italy in 1982 seriously affected their football mentality. The pain from that loss forced them to adopt a pragmatic style that has diminished the beauty and ethos of Samba football. Yes they won the 1994 and 2002 WC but their performances in both tournaments save for a few flashes was so boring that we hardly remember them other than the fact that they won it. Mujtahida: I support this for Brazil. The samba is gone out of Brazilian football and the world of football is deprived because of it.
But I know you using this to shore up your regular argument about using our local players instead of foreign chickens |
Sports › Re: "The Super Eagles Thread: The Road To AFCON 2027, 2028 And 2030 World Cup by chrisooblog: 11:11am On Oct 13, 2024 |
Fantastic post! Wish I could give it more than one like. In the last 30-40 odd years have we really given any of our Nigerian coaches time with the national team compared to their foreign counterparts? Westerhof did roughly 5 years same with Rohr which helped them achieve something substantial with the SE especially in Clemens' case. mrwilliams9: Great questions bros.
For me, we should keep AE for the remaining AFCONQ, AFCON 25 and the 2026 WCQ campaign.
Chopping and changing managers will not do the SE any good if we want to build stability going forward. Just look at England, for all the stick he got, Southgate is still one of the most successful England managers. The players took a liking to him and he had the backing of the English FA to build long term.
Our current players seem to take a liking to AE and we already know this current squad is capable of reaching an AFCON final. We need to build on the good work done in the last campaign and push on forward. There has to be some stability to build properly. Look at Cisse at Senegal, he was backed even after the 2019 AFCON loss in the final and it paid off well for them. We can do the same with AE.
AE was a bit unfortunate at the 2021 AFCON with the Iwobi red card and our GK issues. I think with the rise of Stanley, we have that solidity between the sticks to not have a repeat of 2021 AFCON.
With a win on Tuesday against Libya, we have all but secured our ticket to 2025 AFCON. I still think we can qualify for the WC as our group opponents will likely take points off each other.
I do think hiring a more sound assistant manager to help with the tactics would be a better approach but AE should remain. |
Sports › Re: "The Super Eagles Thread: The Road To AFCON 2027, 2028 And 2030 World Cup by chrisooblog: 3:32pm On Oct 12, 2024 |
If we're going to go with AE then it should be on a long term not these short term rescue missions we keep giving him. I also agree that he should continue with the WC. He has the trust of the players, he's emotionally intelligent, plus his selections are fairly ok with not too many eyebrow raising invitations. For me he still has tactical weaknesses which refresher courses and sound technical assistant coaches can help reduce I believe. We're already in a dicey situation as far as the WC qualifiers are concerned so it's unlikely any glory seeking foreign coach will touch us with a ten foot badge pool. The NFF should also be strategic to pick assistant coaches who have the potential to be future SE Managers. Hotepking: Would you guys be comfortable with Eguavoen leading the team in the world cup qualifiers next year, and why? give your honest reasons
I personally would prefer Eguavoen leading the team. He's not perfect but he seems to command the love, respect and confidence of this team- and more often than not those are the components you need as a coach to be successful...Eguavoen has always been a decent coach with so far the best winning ratio among the list of coaches who have managed us so far based on stats (and I stand to be corrected), his only nemesis has been in knockout phases of major tournaments,he just seems to have that unlucky mojo of never getting far in tournaments.
Right now except we get a genius foreign coach in the mould of a Pep Guardiola, then I can't trust the odds of this team under any random journeyman oyinbo coach in squeezing us through our current world cup group wahala...I get the feeling that even the popular Herve Renard saw and analyzed our precarious world cup situation when contacted and then chickened out, none of the European coaches seemed to want the coaching job.
Eguavoen is the best shot we have at the moment, and every support has to be given to him from the fans and the NFF for him to succeed. |

But that's the thing at Leverkusen I've seen him score some predatory goals but with the national team it's like 'if I no score I no fit kill myself' attitude. Lookman and Osimhen don't always find the back of the net but you can be damn sure they will try. Just my observation anyway. forgiveness: Boniface lacks the instinct of a predator (striker). Team should play according to their own strength and not according to one player. |
Sports › Re: "The Super Eagles Thread: The Road To AFCON 2027, 2028 And 2030 World Cup by chrisooblog: 7:36pm On Oct 11, 2024 |
That's exactly the point I'm making does the midfield and wings play to accommodate Boniface's dribbling style? I'm just struggling to understand how we have a talented forward who scores goals aplenty for a top German side like Leverkusen but with the national team he barely gets shots on target. It would be a different thing if it was he was hitting the bar often or keeper pulling world class saves of his shots. If KC who's even not anywhere a 9 could find a way to find the back of the net for the SE then we have to find a way for Boniface to be more effective for the team. forgiveness: The team still played well without him though he is the best we have for now.
The only thing I saw today is Boneface is not a natural ST. He doesn't think fast enough. He will dribble, turn and think long before anything. |

Still tactically low in my opinion almost played into the Libyans hands if they had better players to catch us on the break. Removing Onyeka disrupted the flow of the midfield before Raphael came on to steady the ship. The boys are playing for him no doubt but he just needs to further refine his tactical nous. charlesemeka85: what type of help does AE need?😳 |

Nice one from Dele good positioning for his goal.
Chukwueze and this his end product sha! Facing the opposition GK and you decide to cut the ball to your left instead of hitting with your right one time.
Onyedika and Frank should be starting for now. Raphael progresses the ball better no doubt. Iwobi and even Ndidi might need some time on the bench.
Seems we struggle to play to the strength of our forwards if he's not named Osimhen.
Kudos to defense third competitive clean sheet in a row.
Tactically still not there AE needs help.
All told what is important is the 3 points unto the next game. |

The part in bold is why I specifically asked why Africa isn't leading in this adoption process if the economics of it make better sense. In addition if the FG wants more people to get onboard the CNG proposal leading stories by a example would help. Ministers, govt officials converting their vehicles to CNG fuel even if performative would help. GloriousGbola: because governments have to drive policy for adoption
tesla would have died if the obama administration did not give them a subsidy solar power in china is thriving - but it is also driven by heavy govt subsidies mobile telephony was available as far back as the abacha years - but until obj liberalised telecomms it did not debut in nigeria
the petrol subsidy has led to dependency on petrol as the soul or key source of energy. diesel if better than petrol for heavy loads. i had resolved years ago that if nigeria did a full deregulation, i would start using diesel generators, because the numbers would no longer make sense
right now i have a client building a station. we have bought disele gen of 15kva. we were going to buy petrol gen of 8kva to 10kva. i am now telling the man to hold on - if petrol is at over 1000/litre, a petrol generator no longer makes financial sense
also, any new technology, even if cheaper or better is competing against already entrenched technology that the owners have invested in
iridium is a company that invested heavily in satelitte phones. they was a already a big market and it was going to get bigger. then GSM came along and killed their market. if iridium had been a larger company, or more entrenched, they may have tried to kill GSM through lobbying or FUD or smear campaigns
most importantly, as i have said previously, we cannot look to first world countries for solutions to third world problems. |

Someone asked a very good question on X/twitter if CNG is all that and supposedly the 'cheaper' option why haven't we seen a global adoption of it or at the very least in Africa? GloriousGbola: Tpain admin has knocked off import duty on cng and ev related materials. Or maybe it is vat. I have forgotten.
People are actually working on this. And let me tell you, if you are worried about cng then you should be frightened about electic vehicles. And their lithium batteries.
Even in the west they have not figured out how to tackle lithium battery fires. They literally have to let them burn out over days. And lithium is subject to a phenomenon called thermal runway which we saw very well with those Samsung 9s. |

Eletu really bothers me cause I see he him as a medium to long term quality addition to the SE. If AC Milan doesn't have him in their long term future I think they should let him go so he can begin playing competitive men's football. As for Frederick I think Brentford rate him if not he wouldn't have been given a contract I'm optimistic his time will come maybe in lesser competitions like the FA Cup. If nothing changes by end of this season then a loan to move to the championship will be a good option. ChrisKels: What's up with Eletu of Milan and Frederick of Brentford, why didn't they go on loan like Akin? |
