I entered thru direct entry but my course is usually 5yrs (petroleum engineering) what's my stand. I used a diploma from PTI to get the direct entry.

Is ur B.Sc a five-year program? How rich is the ICT content? If ur IELTS result is 6.5 across the board...that is zero points and u need 60 points to make it. Read the thread!

And of course there is fre wifi at dubai airport,although u get only 60mins free.
Already on my 2nd leg from dubai to sydney as we speak.
This plane's temp can do partial embalment.

That's great then. Generally, Engineers Australia will assess applicants at undergraduate level.

I will advise you not to include your second degree because you don't need it really and even I'm sure it's not recognised as an accredited degree in Australia. The implication is that a non-accredited Australian postgraduate degree alone will not meet the academic requirement to confer recognition in Australia. It doesn't give you any extra point in Australian immigration as well. Why then are you bothering yourself? Don't worry about the gap. If you obtained your first degree in Nigeria, it is regarded as an unaccredited degree in Australia. In that case, you will need to write CDR. Kindly refer to Engineers Australia booklet for details of what you need to do.

my masters degree is from malaysia...but i want to have a career in petroleum engineering. seems i shud just hide the Msc....but i hope the gap will not cause any trouble

just completed my masters last year,so i have less than a year exp. i studied petroleum engineering for first degree n second is computer systems engineering

They will assess your First degree which is equivalent to Australia First degree. So, you are fine.

Focus on English test and assessment for now. It's not every state that requires a job. I know SA & NSW do not require. It is only your relative that can sponsor you for a Family-489 visa.

ok i'm not going for Engineering Manager. I shud be able to rake up my points without the exp points. so once i can do that I'm good to go right? but the main this is to get a positive assessment first from EA. when filling all the things I need to I'll need all the help I can get so that I dont do it twice. but the thing with 190 is that i need to get a job offer first before a state can nominate me. then 489...do i need a relative to hold a PR first before he/she can sponsor me?

Yes, but it depends on what you are being assessed for. You are fine for other cadres except Engineering Manager which you need at least 3yrs in Managerial role . However, you need to know that work experience with less than 3 years will not give you any point under skilled migration. In that case, you must do well in English test to meet up with the required points. Although you could go for visa subclass 489 and 190 provided that your age is between 25-32=30points,Qualification-15points and English test-10points at least.

I know how you feel. You must be very confused now. Well, I will just tell you little that I know. You could check with your family and friends in Canada on general situations there. I can only talk a bit about Australia.

Employment Situation

Regarding employment for prospective overseas Engineers, I would say it depends on your skills and your experience. Some people were employed directly from Nigeria to work here even without PR. I know of a Mechanical Engineer that got job 7 days after he arrived and some 1-month or two etc. However, do spend several months before they get their dream jobs. Anyway, things have changed a bit because market is a bit flooded particularly for Telecom Engineers. Although there is this ‘local experience palaver’ which most Australian employers value so much. It was when I got in that I discovered why they value it so much. Different work ethics is one of the reasons. If you have worked in places like the UK,US etc. You won’t find it difficult as such when looking for jobs. In Nigeria, we are jack of all trades so to say, but here there is clear delineation of duties. In some cases, you are expected to focus on your area only. Back in Nigeria, I was doing planning, project engineering, support etc. but when I got here, I focus only on designing, less stressful so to say. Having said that, there are skills and experience in Telecom engineering that are not in demand such RF,CORE and BSS. It will be easier for someone with transmission (Not Microwave) experience coupled with IT to get something than a RF Engineer or Core Engineer.

I know few Nigerians working in Oil and gas, IT, Construction industry and also Telecomms. Generally, the strategy is to have Australia standard CV, relevant certifications and not minding starting afresh or do an internship and possibly volunteering jobs. Taking up a volunteering job will fetch you Australian experience.

If you educate me more on your skills and experience, I will be able to advise you. Meanwhile, you could check the two major job websites: www.seek.com.au and www.indeed.com.au

thx for this info...this means that once i get a positive assessment with less than 3yrs exp i can push for my eoi soon after instead of waiting to get 3yrs exp. this is good news at least to avoid all the time that will go by n i'm still stuck in this country. lol @bossmanmo

Yes, Career episodes are jobs u have handled or participated in in your nominated area.

My answer will be yes, if you can produce 3 career episodes at the level (professional engineer, engineering manager, technologist, etc) you are being assessed for and in SOL (for eg civil engr) you are being assessed for. EA determining if your experience is relevant and therefore for how long you can claim for is an added service. However, to submit EOI, you have to wait to have at least 3yrs. You are considered with your "state" at the point you are invited by skills elect to apply for visa.

My thoughts though.

pls tell me...is it possible to get a possitive assessment from EA with less than 3yrs working exp?

You can upload documents immediately after application has been submitted. And also you could wait till when you see requested documents. I attached mine immediately after I submitted and also went ahead with the Medicals without being asked to do so. And guess what, the only mail I got from case officer was VISA GRANT-189. and that happened just in 39 days. So, upload all the documents and arrange for medicals.
