My first ever computer (Siemens 486, 16 MB, 801 MB) was second hand and it lasted me just over a year. My current Linux laptop (Dell Latitude 400MHz, 128 Mb, 6 GB) was 2nd hand, and I have had it for 3 years now no issues. Last year I bought an Acer Travelmate (1.8 GHz, 256 MHz, 30 GB) brand new, and it didn't last me 3 months. NEPA fried it. Funny thing is that the Dell was also connected tp power during the same surge that fried the Acer!

My point is that it is all aout maintenance, not about how new it is.
