This post made me remember something I experienced one day in class.

One major thing lacking in the educational system back home is a checks and balance system for lecturers. Most Nigerian universities have a “senate” charged with dishing out disciplinary actions to erring lecturers and funny enough, it is made up of fellow lecturers who would never see anything wrong in what their colleague did.

In my school here, towards the end of each semester, each student has the chance to review the lecturer and how they taught the class in general. For my biology class, the instructor came in one day with a sealed envelope and informed us that today we would be conducting a survey on her and her class. She called one person and said they should share these forms (attached below) after which another person would collect the forms, seal the envelope and submit to the administrative office for the school and then she left the class. This happened for all my classes. The good thing is it’s anonymous so the lecturer wouldn’t know who wrote what.

Honestly, I feel this is a great and foolproof way to check the rot in our educational system.

This really is a bright idea!

lol!...Is there any human rights as part of Nigeria's written Constitution? Let us start with this question.

Of course there are rights, but what we're talking about is the abuse of these Rights by power drunk individuals ranging from all the sectors. There are challenges to the adequate enforcement of this rights. Hence, the government has to amend some clauses in the Nigerian constitution

in my department, A lecturer came in to the lecture hall, went straight to a student on first class, pointed a finger at him and said " your GP is shaking" and I'll make sure it goes down... everybody was shock...i feel this lectures are sometimes even jealous of the students....We reported our HOD to Vc cause he was giving us applied question at 100level ....when the man came back to the lecture hall the next day, he told us that, for having the guts to report him to the VC that he's going to punish all of us. our educational system is gone and rotten, if you try to protest or make changes, they see you as trouble maker and may likely push you out of the school.

You see what I meant when I said challenging this lecturer's is like me hiring an assassin to kill me

Elderly folks are running the country.... the youths voted them in... the youths have to make a change by voting them out. The aged lecturers are in the universities... stuck in their old ways.... stuck in the mindset of what was current when they graduated in ehmmmm....1901....looking and treating you guys as if you are their grand children.... do you protest?...do you make demands?... and if they are not met take action? ..have you ever given him a veiled treat?...let him think about what is left of his career?...and about his life coming to an abrupt end? Were you paying attention to the changes in Sudan?...how a brutal regime is pressured to make changes? Follow and learn how changes come about.... by actions... not hoping and praying and doing nothing to effect the change.

I'm also an advocate of change, and I dig you perfectly well sir

This even adds more weight to my point..... home trained/default behavioral setting... same end result..... do not challenge authority..... and this is being passed on from generation to generation. The system has failed us all.... so how would the system be fixed if we do nothing about it? We need to start from somewhere.... and worldwide... university students are usually the ones to first challenge and bring about changes. Ours are afraid to fight for their own rights let alone for others....too home trained!

How can we make a change and fix the system, when the people running the system are not giving the right youths the opportunity to make a positive change in how the system is being run? Look at the nigerian politics today, filled with old daddies that ought to be relaxing in their bed room, look at the lecturers at the University level, filled with old folks who can't even remember the last topic they thought their own student in class

Just so u know, my Dept hasn't been able to produce a first class graduate since the creation of the school, which is about 50years ago. And this isn't because there's nobody worth the crown, but because of the way lecturer's mark students low, because they know for sure that 1st class graduates are usually retained as lecturers in the schl and this lecturer's don't want that.
Now tell me how the young shall grow, when the old doesn't want them to grow!

This is an example of you the students being home trained. What did you as a group of university students do about it?...absolutely nothing.... because you are trained not to question authority.... he is the sub dean.... so it's useless challenging him...... you can't win. Frank is in a university of his choice.... and we hail the system in the US... but do you know that was a right that had to be fought for?...by the Akatas? If they were home trained Frank would not be sharing this with us.
Sub dean or not... he made that statement... as university students... you should be the frontrunners of change.... pressure should be put to get him removed.... ... even if he is not.... a message would be sent to lecturers.... e careful of what you say... and what you do.... or we'll be coming for you. Only then you will see a change to lecturers being professional.

Lol that's not being home trained, it's more like a default behavioral setting in every African (Nigerian) kid due to how the system works here.

I like the part where u said it will be useless challenging him, cos I can't win.. challenging him is more like me sending an assassin to kill me.
I spoke with a more young and reasonable lecturer abt the sub-dean's statement, and what he said was even more shocking, he said the system has also failed him as a lecturer, he made reference to the time he was undergoing his PhD program, about the evil he experienced In the hands of his senior lecturer's. Its sad to know the system has failed us all

And the sad thing is that with that threat that the lecturer made even when he gets reported to the head of his department nothing will be done to hold him accountable.

Sadly enough, he's also part of the head/management. He's the sub-dean of the faculty.

On the first day of the philosophy class, he informed us that this class was not going to be an easy one. He told us that for this course, his teaching method had to be entirely different from other instructors. He pointed out that over the course of our journey into the world of having an education, when we walk into a classroom, we are given knowledge by the instructors or teachers and told to memorize it, but in this class, there would be no such process. That he was only here to guide us to knowledge and not hand it to us like a cookie. I was like "what's wrong this man"?

This is what I c

On the first day of class, we were close to 24 persons, on the second day, two or three persons had run away already and this would be the case for the duration of the semester.

================================================================================

**At this point, I should add that the educational system here is very different. Before each semester starts, you have to manually register for the courses you want to take, you have to go to the school, fill out a form, pick the courses you want and then register for them. Some classes fill up faster than others because the instructor might be a good one, or the class might be in high demand.
As the semester goes on, if you decide you don't want the class again or you don't like the teacher or the class is too hard for you, you have to go and fill out a couple of forms again and DROP the classes, if you do not complete this process and you stop coming to class, when the semester ends, the school would charge money you for the class and still give you a FAIL grade..

================================================================================

Back to MR Hammond and his philosophy class. One on occassion, when we walked into class, he asked us to define what philosophy was. Me, bubbling with excitement at having done this course in university in Nigeria, shot my hand up and waited to be called on to answer the question. He glanced in my direction and nodded, giving me the go ahead to answer the question. I stood up and gave the same definiton I was taught during my 100 Level in naija. I told the class that philosophy was coined from two words (bla bla bla). After my definition, he pointed out that I had defined what the word "philosophy" was but I failed to define what philosophy is. Thus began my journey into questioning all I had been taught.

Over the course of the class, we read different works by different popular authors, Plato's Theatetus, Descartes' - discourse on method and works of that nature. Before each class, he would tell us to read a chapter or two of a certain book and when we come to class, we would have an all open discussion about the text we just read. One thing he never did was just spout off definitions straight up, he did what he said he would do, which was guide us to the knowledge so we could find it ourselves.

On one occassion, he asked us an interesting question What does it mean to be human? . He then procceeded to point out the similarities between human beings and robots today. He highlighted the fact that for humans, we had what we called a soul and for robots., they had an operating system which makes them run and function they way they do. That day in class, we talked about how Artificial intelligence (AI) was catching up with humanity faster than we cared to admit and left us to ponder that question What does it mean to be human?

We kept up with the conversation and the class got a little bit heated up when we threw in animals to the conversation. Someone brought up a point that animals don't have a soul and the only reason we feel attached to pets is because of habit. One hispanic girl took it personal, pointing out that animals have a soul. She pointed out numerous instances when her dog displayed emotion (crying when she hurt herself etc etc) and that her dog did have a soul, some asked her if she could say the same about cows and other lower farm animals being butchered everyday; the girl vex o. She said if any of us feels dogs don't have a soul, we, along with the instructor had to be "stupid or something", after she said it, she packed her books and walked out the class leaving everybody dumb founded.

I work night shift at my UPS job. My shift typically starts from 10:00 pm to like 3:30 am. i get home by 4 am and sleep till like 9-10 am and then prepare for school. Sometimes, my drive to school is longer than normal and I end up going late for this philosophy class which starts at 11:00 am. This happened throughout the whole semester and towards the end of the semester, someone told me they actually relished me being in class because I always had something to say about each topic brought up in class. The class started with 24 people, but in the end, we were only around 15 or so because the others had dropped it. This class taught me to believe that which I can ascertain by myself to be true, it taught me to question everything and I believe this is what being educated entails.

At the end of my first semester, I was adviced by two of my instructors to join the honor society called Phi Theta Kappa - an honor society for those whose CGPAs were in the range of 3.5/4.0 to 4.0/4.0. I finished this semester with As in all my courses and a 4/4 CGPA

This is what I will call unbiased educational system. Nigerian lecturers will intensionally refuse to give a student the grade he/she deserves. There's a lecturer in my dept, he made a statement I will never forget, he said "none of his student can have a B in his course, the highest he can give a student is C" just imagine!!!. Immediately at that moment the urge to leave this God forsaken country increased.

This life ehn. We've got Nigerian students from Canada come to Germany because of lack of skilled opportunities. They say there is discrimination on lack of Canadian degrees and Canadian experience. Also, honest reviews from Quora don't help. It seems many skilled migrants in Canada are also trapped in these same unskilled jobs.

I would have gone to Canada long ago if not for that. I felt the money to be wasted on the processing of the Canadian PR to go get unskilled jobs could be better channelled to my business projects in Nigeria.

If you channel dsame amount of internships u did in Germany to that of canada, you're a step on getting the Canadian experience. And about Canadian degree, getting a Canadian degree shouldn't be a bad option, be it masters program, don't look at the time it's going to take but instead look at the benefit that lies ahead. During the program, try taking internship jobs just to get the Canadian experience and to be able to integrate yourself into d Canadian work system. Keep thriving!!!

This is how it works. You and your employer contribute certain amount every month. If you retire before you’re 50, you can take 25% of the contribution plus acrued interest. If you don’t take it and you retired by 50, you’ll be paid the 25% in bulk. The rest will be paid every month or quarterly based on your instruction for next maybe 18years. This is your pension. It is not paid in bulk and it is not transferable.

I believe we are both talking about the same contributory pension scheme? Here's what I got from my research

It is not just your dad’s contribution. It is the contribution of your dad and his employer. You are not entitled to your dads pension.

Are you sure about this?, Because to my best of knowledge, every employees pension is normally removed out of his/her gratuity. for example, if an employees gratuity is let's say 15M, certain amount is being removed aside and being paid as pension bit by bit to the employee every month. So you saying it's the contribution of the dad and his employer, how please?

And about you ruining your reputation at work. Lol if your work place is female dominated of average magnitude, then chances are she might spill it to some of the females at work. Which I don't think she will, if she's matured.

But just incase she does, no yawa. Just play along, don't stop talking to her. Invite her on a second date, make sure it's in your house this time. Give her the bleeping of her life. After that bleeping she go stop all her yen yen yen for work and give u your respect.
