Even in IT, Indians are prioritized, and truth be told, those guys know it!

As someone who has worked with few indians i wouldn't totally agree, most i have encountered are very good in theoretical aspects but suck in practical aspects. They tend to over engineer alot!

The tech space in abuja isn't as big as what they have in lagos. Asides ventures park i dont see any other tech hub in abuja. Entry level tech salary in abuja is around 150k. Abuja is more suitable for real estate and independent contractors

Jobs/Vacancies / Re: What Should One Consider When Taking Up A Remote Job? by Clefayomide: 4:50pm On Apr 18, 2022
chuksdsilent:
There are so many online fake companies out there

That want to defraud people in one way or the other

my question is how can one identify these fake company

What should one consider when taking up remote job?

As someone who has had encounter on two occasions with some of these fake companies (in my case tech companies), I'd advice you to
1. Look up the company's profile on LinkedIn, a serious and genius company would definitely have a LinkedIn profile

2. Speak with one or two staffs of the company if you are able to find them on LinkedIn. Ask them about the company, work ethics, the role you're applying to. During your interview, ask the interviewer questions about your role, why is it vacant, ask about the previous staff at your role.

3. Watch out for red flags, this red flags can come in any form, I.e WhatsApp interviews, not giving you enough time to go through your contract before getting back to them (they be like "you only have 2days to get back to us, we have other applicants who wants the job)

4. I don't know what sector you're into, but if it's tech, watch out for the type of test you're given as assessment. Some of these tech companies will only make you do the test, serve you rejection mail and go ahead to use your code in production.

5. Try to be familiar with the law guarding remote work in the said country

6. Lastly, always read your contract agreement thoroughly, give to your lawyer to go through it if possible. The big red flags are always hidden in the contract agreement, why? Because these companies know most people don't like to read these documents from start to finish, so that's where they get you played

Mine was a binary tree and one other array and object related DSA. I was able to pass the latter and that's how I scaled through that stage. just try pass one.

Hi my first test was an array related algorithm which I was able to pass but couldn't do the next one cos timeout. Do they proceed with applicant who could only pass one of the tests?

( It happened to me. Fell sick during exams, fallout was that I repeated a year. One of the better years of my university experience.)

And you're happy to say it with your chest ? Idk why Nigerians are so comfortable with things that shouldn't be the way they are. So in a standard tertiary institution there isn't something like a resit examination for student with reasonable and proven excuse for missing their exam ? It is well

And there really was nothing the lecturer could do..especially as SIWES is mandatory. As far as we know, all students in certain courses have to do SIWES...to graduate.

If she just waived him, it could have come back to cause more issues for her.

So what would have been done in a situation where a student fell sick or was hospitalized ?

In as much as it was totally wrong for the boy to assault his lecturer, but we can't act like some lecturers don't deserve some ass whooping.
You that you're reading this, I'm sure you can mention at least 5 lectures/teachers you wish you can Panel beat. Sentiments aside!
Lots of lecturers have made life a living hell for students.
There is more to this story and I don't think the boy will just randomly start beating the lecturer for no reason. This is a 400level student we are talking about. He must have been severely pushed to the wall before risking everything and then attacking the lecturer. He is a human after all and his emotions may have gotten the best of him, thereby making him overreact.
The case should be adequately heard and appropriately judged without bias, regardless of the parties involved.

But, the guy would definitely have to receive some sort of punishment for assaulting a staff and fighting on premises. He shouldn't have done that. I do NOT support him assaulting her. From the way she was crying and shouting, you'll know the guy really did a number on her. The guy should have just continued to endure till he will get the certificate he came for and leave the school. It's not going to be easy, but it's the smart decision.
I'm sitting on the fence for the main time.
We need more details.

Exactly. The guy missed his siwes due to the fact that he was illegally detained in Lagos for 2month. He explained his situation to the lecturer but she said he'll have to do it next year (another extra year). According to the story, this guy had begged the lecturer on different occasion but no luck. This lecturers can push one to the extreme wall!. I'm not in support of him attacking the lecturer, he should have just asked another lecturer to intervene on his behalf. But omo this lecturers can push you to the wall

Except that tech is not Nursing and Teaching. It is one of the most deep and diverse areas with so many segments ( Data analysis, Web development, A.I, Networking, Salesforce development, Database Administration, etc).
Tech (especially Data Science the new oil) can also be combined or adopted to almost any other profession.
Hence comparing tech to stand alone, specific professions like Nursing and Teaching is simplistic. Tech is both art and science and it is the core of the Digital 21st century meant to be combined with many other professions taking them to other dimensions in this century.

Do you know about the different segments of nursing and teaching ? Those terms are just a general name to refer to anyone practicing any aspect of it. You think teaching is just about carrying chalk up and down ?. Both profession are very broad, tech encompasses every profession that's what makes it stand out. Lol calling nursing and teaching standalone profession is just like saying finance is also a standalone profession meanwhile there are tons of segments in finance. And please teaching is also art and science!

It's not really about a man being alone in this world though. I think the idea is to encourage more of the women folks. The thing is women have been discriminated for centuries and seen as the property of men and as people who can't be as smart as men. So giving free laptops to women is to encourage more women into tech so as to dispel those barbaric notions in society. It is possible that we are missing out a lot from not having so many women in IT.

The last time I checked, men have had it easier in so many other ways and have not been so underrated in history due to their gender like the women have.

I get your point and it's actually a beautiful thing to encourage more women into tech. But imho I think that trend has basically neglected the men in tech (at least the ones just starting out), we're lost in trying to get more women into tech and refused to see the other side of the coin which is the male gender. I've seen guys give up on tech to pursue another career due to the struggle and no little encouragement whatsoever. Have you ever heard about a male bootcamp or gadget giveaway strictly for males ? NO! There are also jobs where males are under represented, HR for instance, and not a single place have I seen "get more men into hr"

So a tech Nigerian firm will hire someone (female or otherwise) who doesn't know how to pop a stack, or how to evaluate Big O for an algorithm because of their gender? Are they developing real-life production ready software or they are hiring a student for a training program? Come on nau Tensa

And is the phrase "more preference will be given to women" only in Nigeria? Or you haven't seen foreign remote jobs that say the same? Or that preference will be given to minorities (blacks and Hispanics)? Really?

Here's part of a JD for a job opening in the US

As an Equal Opportunity Employer, we encourage veterans, individuals with disabilities, women, and all minorities to consider our employment opportunities.

First of all, women shouldn't be on this list. That list comprises of individuals with differences and circumstances. What differences/circumstances are you faced with for being just a woman ?

And how about "As an equal opportunity employer we encourage every individuals from different background, race, individuals with disabilities, minors, to consider our employment opportunities" ?

Only dog, cat, and women are loved unconditional. It's really tough being a man lmao

I know its unbelievable but this happens in a lot of Nigerian tech firms. Once they see its a woman or hear a womans voice during the initial interview they reduce the standard just so they can have more women on the team. With foreign companies where no one can see your face or hear your voice till interview stages the standard is the same but in Nigerian tech its absolutely different. You even see recruitments with warnings like more preference will be given to women and shit here in Nigeria.

Not to sound misogynistic but I've seen this in many tech job ads and it's quite disgusting and unfair to the male gender. I mean!! Put out a fair interview process and give the best candidate the job, which one is more preference to women arrggh

Are you kidding me now Tensa! Are you saying all I have to do to get my foot in the door is claim to be a female and I'd get a watered down screening? Seriously?!?!

How about non-binary and people who don't identify with a gender. Do they get easier questions than both male and female?

Are you saying that if a woman writes a piece of code for critical infrastructure and the code does not come up to scratch, QA will approve the code because it's a woman and they can accept watered down code because a woman had watered down job screening?

There's always empathy when a female is involved due to the "get more women into tech" trend

Well if you are a lady you can start. Women in tech have it much easier and if it doesn't work out there's always marriage to a very rich man.

Fr! Women in tech are really beginning to find it much easier. Couple of female friends in tech have changed jobs over the years while the guys I know are really struggling to get their first Job and it's not like they're not good. Idk if the whole trend about getting more women into tech is really making it hard to see that the male techies also need help too. Alot of female bootcamps out there, not a single one for males ( this gender has always been positioned to figure things out themselves). About the marriage part me I no know o hahaha

Thanks for this thread bro, just starting my journey into tech. Done with HTML like people would say, you can never finish learning CSS so I’ll say I’m well grounded in CSS.

I’m presently learning JS and I’ve been trying to get web dev internship but the thing hard small so I’ve decided to focus on learning my JS and move to react when I’m very good with JS.

I have some domain names that I’m presently developing websites for just to build my portfolio so I can pay for hosting and host them and start applying for junior developer roles when I’m good enough with react.

I would like to know your thoughts on this boss, wouldn’t mind if I can be mentored by you also

Why use a paid hosting platform as a learner when there are tons of free hosting platform you could use. Like netlify, git pages etc. Use that money to buy course instead.

Guy, our mind works together. shocked shocked

I was going to create something like this. Aje!

Job no dey, job no dey but I have two interviews scheduled for next week.

Before now, I have been offered a job without interview right from my town here in Ondo State in Lagos. They couldn't continue with me because I don't reside in Lagos and the work is not 100 percent remote. That same month, I got a call from another recruiter from Abuja and an email from a recruiter in London. They couldn't hire me because of the reason above.

Funnily enough, when I showed a senior developer the CV that got me calls from 3 recruiter, he trashed it. I had to make some important edit. Same CV got me a test with access bank, I guess I didn't do well in the test because I was rejected. Although they didn't show us the test results.

A guy connected via this same NL, wanted an e-commerce store. I charged N500k he priced N100k and I said no. I fuccked up for there sha.

Point is, if there were too much jobs, no one would have looked at my horrible resume.

Granted I have a lot of rejection mails but I'm getting called for interviews and there are web jobs, local and foreign, being posted everyday on LinkedIn, indeed, even jobberman.

Those behind this propaganda are people who have never coded in their life or people who gave up on coding because it's too hard.

Lastly, abeg I get interview no mean say I get job o. I still dey job hunt o.

What's your stack ?
