Afcon 2019: Nigeria can't match Bafana Bafana's pace and skill - Mohlala The retired left-back has praised the current Bafana squad for their win over the Pharaohs and backed them to stun the Super Eagles too Former South Africa defender Jethro Mohlala has warned the supporters not to put Bafana Bafana under pressure following their win over Egypt at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) finals. Coach Stuart Baxter's men are through to the quarter-finals of the continental tournament and many have backed the team to go all the way and become champions for the second time. “Look, I think many South Africans never gave the boys a chance based on how the results in the group stages came out. I believe that also helped the players to relax because they were underdogs going into that clash,” Mohlala told Goal. “Having said that, they knew their qualities and they just had to play their normal game and show their quality and they did everything well,” he added. “They are aware that the fans back home were not happy and they had to step up. They silenced everyone and that will restore their confidence. That is a massive victory for the team without a doubt. I never gave them a chance they proved us wrong, that was pure class and I just think they can beat whoever they face going forward. Speaking about team selection as goalscorer Thembinkosi Lorch replaced Themba Zwane, Mohlala expressed disappointment where fans tend to individualise players based on their clubs. “Yeah, they played very well, the change was good and it worked. Credit must go to the coach and his technical team. I am not happy though when we mention players based on their clubs, this is a national team,” he urged. “We just need to support them as a national team. Lorch did very well for us and he clicked with Percy Tau and it was good that we scored at that time in the game. Lorch is a great player, I hope he learns day by day and we wish them all the best going forward." Moreover, the former Mamelodi Sundowns player stated that facing Nigeria in a quarter-final clash on Wednesday is better than meeting a fellow Southern African side. “I think that’s going to be a good game against Nigeria and the boys will need to focus. It’s better we are not facing another Southern African side,” continued the legend. “I think the North and West Africans are struggling to play against us. They cannot match our pace and skill. I would like to see a continuity from the boys and ensure we upset Nigeria. “I think we also need to credit the coach for analyzing the game very well. I believe that it’s not about playing badly in the group stages, but we failed to clear the lines at the back and lapses of concentration let us down – our mistakes killed us,” he reflected. "Other than that, we still have a good team and we can go all the way to challenge for the trophy. It’s a knockout stage and we can beat any team now but let’s not put the boys under pressure. I am proud of the team and players such as Dean Furman, Kamohelo Mokotjo showed us that they want to die for the national team,” concluded the legend. Courtesy: Goal.com |
2019 AFCON: Rohr highlights Super Eagles weak point, reacts to death in Madagascar Super Eagles coach, Gernot Rohr, has told his backline to be at their best when they face Madagascar on Sunday. He noted that while Nigeria managed to score two goals in total against Burundi and Guinea The Barea netted on three occasions. The German coach said that this proves they are better offensively than the Super Eagles so far in the tournament. ”The Madagascar team we saw them doing better than us in scoring three goals against teams we scored two against,” Rohr told reporters at Saturday’s press conference. ”They were better offensively against them but we have a solid performance in our two games, we didn’t concede a goal. ”There will be an interesting match to see against a team with a lot of offensive qualities. Also, they scored a free-kick, from corners and we saw them playing on Thursday they had a very good match. ”The winner will come first in the group so it is a big motivation for us to win this game. We know that a draw is enough to finish top but we play to win our games all the time.” The Super Eagles handler however offered his condolences following the death of over 16 people at a stadium in Madagascar during independence day celebrations this week ”I have sympathy for the nice country Madagascar because they had an accident in the Stadium on the National Day, 16 people died so they deserve this joy to be qualified . ”They have qualified already even if they lose and to bring some joy to the people who had this accident,” the German said. Nigeria vs Madagascar: Gernot Rohr hints at Super Eagles XI Head coach of the Super Eagles, Gernot Rohr has revealed what his lineup may look like against Madagascar in their last group game tomorrow. The German said he will certainly make changes in the match. This means that the likes of Victor Osimhen, Henry Onyekuru and John Ogu may have a taste of the game in Egypt. Nigeria has already booked a place in the round of 16 with a game to spare. ”I can say you can expect some changes because I want to put everybody under pressure to be concerned by the matches,” Rohr said at Saturday press conference. ”There is competition for each position now, even in the goalkeeper department, even in the central defense, even for the striker positions. ”We will see in the last training this evening which changes we can make. In the last match we had five changes and it’s possible that there will be changes in the match for tomorrow. On Madagascar, he said, ”I don’t believe that they are tired because they won the game and they are a team which is very fit. ”They have good staff, I know them. French people who are working very well, fitness coach, Nicolas Dupuis is a very good coach in France so they are really very fit. ”They have the experience to recover very quickly, and they started like us on the same day and tomorrow’s match is very open against this good team of Madagascar.” Culled from dailypost.ng |
barackodam:Me Sha won't blame them o. Their primary audience is English and they have to write their articles so that it will relate to their primary target population. I'm sure Nigeria media will do the same. For example Completesportsnigeria said this about Nana Bonsu "Rangers goalkeeper Nana Bonsu has been handed a chance to fight for a place in Black Stars of Ghana squad to the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt......." Eagles’ Starting Lineup Vs Guinea: Mikel, Troost-Ekong, Chukwueze Dropped; Balogun, Musa, Simon In Super Eagles captain John Mikel Obi, William Troost-Ekong and Samuel Chukwueze have been dropped to the bench for today’s 2019 Africa Cup of Nations Group B clash with Guinea, Completesports.com reports. The trio started the Eagles’ first match against the Swallows of Burundi last Saturday. In their place, head coach Gernot Rohr, has opted for Ahmed Musa, Leon Balogun and Moses Simon. In goal, Rohr has kept faith with Daniel Akpeyi who despite a good showing against Burundi looked short of confidence. Versatile defender, Chidozie Awaziem, who replaced the injured Shehu Abdullahi against Burundi will start at right-back, while Ola Aina and Kenneth Omeruo are the two other defenders that have been handed starting shirts against the Guineans. Leicester City midfielder, Wilfred Ndidi, Oghenekaro Etebo and John Mikel Obi will start in midfield. Match hero against Burundi, Odion Ighalo will lead the attack in place of Paul Onuachu, and will be flanked by the duo of Moses Simon and Ahmed Musa. Super Eagles Starting Lineup VS Guinea Daniel Akpeyi, Kenneth Omeruo, Leon Balogun, Ola Aina, Chidozie Awaziem, Wilfred Ndidi, Oghenekaro Etebo, Alex Iwobi, Ahmed Musa, Moses Simon, Odion ghalo Completesportnigeria Modified Mikel Obi should be on the bench. I think Mikel being in the lineup in this write-up is a mistake |
Rohr's toughts On The Guinea Team Guinea are a very good team who are capable of winning against us. We know that tomorrow’s match will be very hard, but we’ll try our best to win and we can make it. It’s going to be hard, but we can do it. Completesportsnigeria |

Nigeria 0 France 1: More penalty drama sees hosts top group Wendie Renard dispatched a retaken penalty for her third goal of the Women's World Cup as France edged past Nigeria on Monday. Hosts France secured top spot in Group A at the Women's World Cup after more penalty controversy saw them earn a 1-0 win over 10-woman Nigeria. A draw would have seen France lead the pool and Nigeria join them in the next round as a top-ranked third-placed side, and such an outcome appeared likely for much of a dull contest. However, Ngozi Ebere was shown a second yellow card and conceded a late penalty following a VAR review - the second straight match in which France have benefited from the technology. Wendie Renard missed the spot-kick at the first attempt but took full advantage of being ordered to retake it after Nigeria goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie stepped off her line. Renard, who netted twice against South Korea and then scored an own goal against Norway, proved the match-winner and Nigeria must now wait to see if three points are enough to advance to the next stage. France predictably dictated play from the off, while Nigeria provided a threat on the break. However, set-pieces appeared the most likely route to goal for either side early on as Amandine Henry volleyed wide. A rare moment of individual brilliance from Delphine Cascarino almost teed up Valerie Gauvin, but the match remained deadlocked at the end of an uneventful first half. Cascarino slammed wide and then squared for Gaetane Thiney to wastefully shoot off target early in the second period, with the forward going closer when she prodded another dangerous right-wing centre across the face of goal. But the penalty - awarded by referee Melissa Borjas following a review of video footage - after Ebere tangled with Viviane Asseyi and was shown a red card finally led to the breakthrough. Renard dragged a tame penalty against the foot of the left-hand upright, but Nnadozie's early movement provided a reprieve and the defender picked out the top-right corner to seal the win at the second attempt. Ndidi 'flattered' by Man Utd links, but insists focus is on AFCON The Foxes midfielder has been linked with some of the biggest names in the Premier League, but he only has eyes on Nigeria's AFCON campaign Leicester City star Wilfred Ndidi has admitted he is “flattered” to be linked with a big money move away from the King Power Stadium, but insists his focus is currently on Nigeria’s bid to win the Africa Cup of Nations. The midfielder was an ever-present for the Foxes in the Premier League last season, and enjoyed an eye-catching campaign – particularly once Brendan Rogers had taken the managerial reigns in February this year. Perhaps not surprisingly, his form has attracted the attention of some of England’s biggest clubs, with Manchester United, Arsenal and Champions League winners Liverpool all credited with an interest in the 22-year-old. But, while Ndidi has acknowledged such reports are complimentary, his feet remain firmly on the ground as he looks to make his mark in Egypt over the next five weeks, and in the blue of Leicester beyond that. “I am flattered when hearing such a thing,” Ndidi, who arrived in the Premier League from Belgian club Genk in a £14m deal in early 2017, told Goal. “It is very good to hear about that interest from big clubs, but there is nothing on the ground so I won't care about it. “I am focusing on AFCON with Nigeria now, and then pre-season with Leicester City. We have a great manager with ambition to compete with big clubs in the Premier League.” Nigeria open their AFCON campaign against Burundi in Alexandria on Saturday, and are overwhelming favourites to qualify for the last 16 from a group that also contains Guinea and Madagascar. Ndidi, however, is taking nothing for granted ahead of next weekend’s opener, and claims one of the biggest potential challenges could well come from one of his former Leicester team-mates as well as the tournament’s other big hitters from the likes of Egypt and Senegal. “Mohamed Salah is a very good player,” he says. “I’ve played against him three times – he’s a great finisher and very fast. Sadio Mane is also a very good player. “But the toughest one for me is (Algeria’s) Riyad Mahrez. He was at Leicester and we trained together every day before he left for Manchester City. “He is very difficult, skinny and very technical. You have to slow down to take him out - if you go fast he will finish you in seconds. “I don’t think that it is an easy group. For me, there is no easy team in modern football. The name does not matter – the only thing that matters in the 90 minutes of the game. “We can get a shock from this group, so we have to stay focused on the game, not on how easy it is, and ignore what people say. “We will play tough games against very good teams, and our target is to be on the top by the end of the group stages.” With a warm-up friendly against Senegal to come on Sunday, Nigeria’s attempt to reach next month’s final in Cairo will depend heavily on the form of Ndidi and his midfield co-star John Obi Mikel. The former Chelsea man and Nigeria’s captain, now 32, was something of a hero of Ndidi’s during his younger days, and his influence in the middle of the park for the Super Eagles could have a huge bearing on their fate. “It is great to play with him,” admits Ndidi. “I grew up watching Mikel. He is my role model and playing alongside him is a great thing “He is very calm, a good captain, and he gives advice to everyone and speaks with everyone. When you talk to him, he is very humble. “It is a plus to the team having such a player. We grew up watching him, and now we’re playing with him he gives us more confidence “With our current players, coach and staff, I think we can do something great. The important thing is to try to win games as much as we can. “We cannot talk about winning the cup now - we will deal with it game by game and see what will happen. There are many good teams here Culled from goal.com |
Curtisaxel7:I don't agree with you because Rohr has always been one who knows how to strike a balance between reality and expections This interview was before the 2-1 away win at the Levy Mwanawasa stadium in Zambia (the first game in the 2018 WCQ) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E8XX17KJn0c |
Icon4s:I shared an earlier post were he said they will fight hard to win the cup. Let's correlate that with the maximum seven matches he wants to play |
Clementoke:Maximum seven matches......... The coach is actually dreaming of getting to the final |
Gernot Rohr on whether he is under pressure to win in Egypt We are not under any pressure going to Egypt because we have been away since 2013; we didn’t go in 2015 and 2017 and so how we can be under pressure when we have missed the last two tournaments (general laughter)? We are going to Egypt to do our best because it was success to have been able to qualify for the tournament, but now we must do more in Egypt. There has been good progress after the World Cup in Russia and you know we had a tough AFCON qualifying group with Libya and South Africa; so to qualify is already a success for our team. But we go to Egypt with a lot of possibilities and we need to be very fit to be able to play the maximum seven matches at the AFCON. We need to work really hard to be able to win something at the AFCON; and like we have a good atmosphere and team spirit which is very important if we are going to succeed. As you know, we have good young boys in this team now and with the experience we had in Russia, it is perfect for us. Culled from The Nation |
