Suffering In The Land Of Ghana

It’s plain to see, looking in the face of Ghanaians that they are suffering from abject poverty and neglect in the land of Ghana. Even though their land abounds in rich mineral endowment, Ghanaians in the midst of plenty are tormented by indescribable poverty. The origin of their sufferance lies with their obnoxious attitudinal “leave it to Providence to deal with it” (“Fa ma Nyame. Nyame bekyere”), when crooks are ransacking, pilfering or plundering the national coffers.

They have resigned themselves to fate taking its natural course, instead of bending it to suit them. When the few fortunate ones in government, although ethically and professionally wrong, have resolved without shame to duping the people, all what the poor masses keep saying is, “God will take care of the situation Himself”. The poor very rarely demonstrate their anger. When they do, it is mostly on the radio. The perpetrators of the atrocious crimes pursue their intentions with audacity, in the hope that the whirlwind will settle in the end (“ehuru a ebedwo”), and the belief that the poor in society are just mere toothless barking bulldogs.

With both despicable attitudes often expressed by the Ghanaian, a few those in the political arena, the mint house and the scene of amassing illegal wealth; the Sugar candy mountain overflowing of honey, will forever be encouraged to milk the country dry. This is exactly what the “we shall not listen to anyone” (“yen ntie obiara”) John Mahama/Arthur-Amissah NDC-led government is doing. They are killing Ghanaians softly through their blatantly unpropitious acts of stealing.

Ghanaians are unfortunately satisfied with given promises and reassurances by their oftentimes clueless, incompetent and corrupt administrators. How many times has President Mahama not given Ghanaians promises that are never honoured? How many times have his appointees not been accused of corrupt practices, leading to the near depletion of the contents of the public coffers, but the President watches nonchalantly?

The few those in government and in charge of the political parties, especially the National Democratic Party (NDC), are scandalously availing themselves of the national coffers to the detriment of the poor masses. The government collusively involves herself in what has infamously become a “create, loot and share” judgment debt payment scheme or scam. Yet, in the face of all these rampant acts of misdemeanour, Ghanaians remain docile, keeping to themselves saying, “I do not want any trouble” (“me mmpe me ho asem”), unlike Rockson, the defender of the poor and the needy in society.

Unless Ghanaians become conscious of the repercussions of their lukewarm and nonchalant attitudes, to begin to hold their leaders accountable, the few crooks in positions of responsibility and their agents will forever hold them at bay.

A lone voice is crying in the wilderness, seeking to rally Ghanaians to teach them about their rights and how to defend them. Who will respond to his call that will eventually culminate in the liberation of Ghanaians from the abject poverty they are always confronted with? Once they become aware of their rights, they will never again sit down with their “Nyame bekyere” attitudes while they are killed softly by the intentional infliction of corruption on the economy by their presumably “untouchable” leaders.

I Want To Be An Armed Robber In Future …3 -Yr-Old Pupil Tells DCE

There was utter shock and disbelief at Asuogyaman in the Eastern Region when a three-old KG pupil confidently disclosed to the District Chief Executive (DCE) and his delegation during ‘my first day at school,’ visit that he aspires to become an armed robber in future to enable him become rich.

The shocking answer was a response to a question the DCE, Thomas Ampem Nyarko, asked the children regarding what they aspire to become in future.

When asked if he understood what armed robbers do, the KP pupil remained silent for minutes forcing the DCE to issue a directive to the guidance and counseling unit of the Ghana Education Service to take the pupil through counseling and send their report to his office for further action.

The DCE stated that the assembly will make sure that the pupil gets the best of support needed throughout his education to ensure that he grows to become a responsible citizen in future. The DCE and his entourage made up of officers from the district education office led by the district education director, Mavis Yirenkyi visited schools such as Akwamu West Anglican Primary, Akosombo Beasley, Akosombo VRA Roman Catholic School, VRA Presbyterian Primary School, Nuriya Islamic and Pupuni L/A Primary School.

Mr. Nyarko encouraged the pupil’s especially, the newly-admitted KG pupils to take their studies serious by being punctual and learning hard. He told the pupils that the only way for them to be rich is through education, adding that there is no short cut to success; therefore, they must not joke with their education.

He emphasized government’s commitment to continuously invest heavily in education by making sure that facilities needed to enhance quality education are made available to them

Ghana On the Road To Purgatory

The labyrinthine subterfuges designed to rape Ghana’s economy until there was nothing left in the national coffers may have gone undetected for a few years, but not any longer. When Dr. John Atta Mills lost his life tragically at the Osu Castle a few years ago – shockingly, the cause of the president’s death has still not been disclosed – many welcomed the serendipitous elevation of John Mahama to the august office of head of state, believing, perhaps, that Mahama’s ascension would compensate for the criminal and bloody removal of Dr. Hilla Limann, the only other person from the northern part of the country to have served as president of Ghana. The preceding hypothesis may explain why John Mahama was elected president in December 2012, after campaigning for only three months against an experienced, charismatic, been-there-done-that challenger, notwithstanding the brouhaha that surrounded the post-election lawsuit filed by Nana Akufo-Addo and the New Patriotic Party that took more than six months to resolve by the nation’s highest court.


The overt corruption taking place in Ghana today is unprecedented in the annals of the nation, more so because Ghana has had the misfortune of being ruled by mobsters, gangsters, and Mafiosos parading as military officers. If anything, one would expect military dictatorships to perpetrate the worst atrocities and engage in the vilest practices against their own citizens, but what is happening in Ghana today makes the combined dictatorships of Kutu Acheampong, Fred Akuffo, and Jerry Rawlings look like child’s play.


When I wrote an article several months ago condemning the garrulous and dogmatic attacks on Victoria Lakshmi Hammah by ostensibly chauvinistic nabobs, I did so believing that Ghana’s – and Africa’s – patriarchal and androcentric beliefs have remained at odds with the elevation of women in society, and I felt aggrieved that we were missing the chance to improve the statuses of women in Ghanaian society. Little did I know, at the time, that Victoria Hammah was not in government to serve the people; rather, the former deputy minister of communications had a singular goal: to amass as much wealth as possible, presumably on the backs of the suffering Ghanaian taxpayers, within the shortest space of time. It was a shocking fall from grace for a woman who seemed bent on making her mark as a devoted, conscientious civil servant. And Victoria Hammah is only the tip of the iceberg in an exceedingly corrupt John Mahama-led administration.


When Ghana’s Black Stars went on a rampage in Brazil and threatened to walk away from a FIFA-scheduled match because their bonuses were still unpaid, it took the intervention of the president of the republic to calm frayed nerves, get the “obstinate” players to honor the match, and prevent what would have been the greatest embarrassment suffered by a nation-state in contemporary times. What most pundits forgot to ask, however, was why the players would display such recklessness, knowing very well that the entire nation – and the rest of the world – was watching.


Ghana became the laughing stock of the media in Brazil when President Mahama instructed someone to fly a large amount of cash to Brazil to prevent the players’ boycott of the aforementioned soccer match. The myriad of reasons provided by the government for taking this ill-advised action only worsened the furor surrounding the whole saga. And I dare state here that rehashing those pathetic reasons serves no purpose at all. What John Mahama should have done – as soon as the team and the unpatriotic Ghanaian delegation returned to Ghana – was to dissolve the GFA, sack Kwesi Nyantakyi and his cronies, and then wait for the corrupt FIFA hierarchy to suspend the country from organized competitions. The last time I checked, no serious nation on God’s Earth relied on soccer to feed its citizens. Unless Ghana’s leaders are willing to take drastic measures to address the twin cancers of corruption and ineptness, mediocrity would remain our watchword.


As the claims and counterclaims surrounding the embarrassing performance in Brazil reached the local airwaves and inundated pro-Ghana(ian) Internet portals, it became clear that government officials’ willingness to pay as much as $25.00 for a single coconut to scantily clad, hourglass-shaped Brazilian damsels at popular beach resorts may have angered many of the loyal players, reminding the latter of the popular Ghanaian refrain, “Monkey dey work, baboon dey chop.” Instead of investigating these corrupt government officials who traveled to Brazil for no other reason than to claim unmerited bonuses on the backs of hardworking Ghanaian taxpayers, senior government officials validated the expulsion of players who complained about team officials’ excesses and profligacies!


When Ghana’s Minister of Education, Professor Opoku-Agyeman, recently perorated that Ghana’s educational system ranked among some of the best on the African continent, it became clear that the group of oddballs ruling the nation must have considered the majority of Ghanaians unlettered and uninformed. With the overwhelming majority of the nation’s senior secondary school students barely able to communicate comprehensibly, we can only wonder how this minister of state drew her conclusions about the nation’s “endearing” academic landscape.


If news filtering out of Ghana that the Commissioner of CHRAJ, Lauretta Vivian Lamptey, has over an eighteen-month span caused financial loss to the state in the amount of $148,000 is true, then I wonder if John Mahama is really in charge of the state of affairs. Ghana remains one of only a few nations with extremely lavish benefits for top government employees. Ghanaian ministers of state must find their own places to live – and pay the rents out of pocket. In a country where government cannot provide its citizens with uninterrupted electricity, purportedly because it lacks the resources to do so, one can only wonder how these “apprentices” got the baton handed to them to steer the affairs of the nation.


What is happening in Ghana is no laughing matter, as the nation is teetering on the verge of irremediable economic and educational collapse. Ghana is in serious trouble, and I hope that those tasked with handling the nation’s affairs would wake up from their collective slumber, gird their loins, and begin on a path that would restore hope to the nation. I truly hope that John Mahama would wake up, make difficult and necessary policy changes, restructure his administration, dismiss incompetent officials, rein in party aficionados, and take charge of the nation like the leader that he is supposed to be. Wake up, John Mahama, before it is too late.

And this is just one day alone

IN their desperation for university education, Nigerian students now rush to Ghana, where most of them fall prey to the scam of burgeoning degree mills to acquire certificates of dubious distinction or no academic value. The racketeers operate from one-block institutions or portakabins, pompously labelled as universities. There are 50 privately-owned universities approved by the Ghanaian government, most of which are involved in this academic charade. The Executive Secretary, National Universities Commission (Nigeria), Julius Okojie, said in August 2013 that Ghana had only four recognised universities. This is instructive. The rest are affiliate institutions.

The rot in these so-called citadels of learning was the focus of a 10-day tour by The PUNCH late last year. There are about 110,000 Nigerians currently studying there, according to records at the Nigerian High Commission in Ghana. They pay outrageous tuition, just as their brethren in business who are fleeced before being allowed to operate despite ECOWAS protocol on free trade. According to Wale Babalakin, Chairman, Committee of Pro-Chancellors of Nigerian Universities, these fees result in capital flight of about N160 billion annually from Nigeria to Ghana. This figure was higher than Federal Government’s education budget in 2011.

At one such one-block university — Accra Institute of Technology — which claims to be the equivalent of the famous Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA, there are about 2,000 students, out of which 1,200 are reportedly Nigerians. The school also runs a “doctoral programme” in a rented and uncompleted structure, and charges between $1,300 (N202,800) and $1,510 (N235,560) per session, accommodation and feeding excluded. However, at public universities, fees for foreigners vacillate between $6,000 (N936,000) and $8,000 (N1,248,000) per session, while those studying medicine pay as much as $18,000 (N2,808,000).

The bottom line is that whether in a legal or a sham university, a Nigerian student in Ghana pays through his/her nose. Nobody knows this better than Ademola Onafowokan, Nigeria’s High Commissioner to Ghana. He laments, “…thousand and one, one-block and many mushroom universities (are) set up to target Nigerian students yearning for education…. But, sadly, they are not cheap as Nigerians pay in dollars. These universities are just pure business ventures.”

Apart from the difficulty of gaining admission at home, many youths may have been attracted to these schools by their compromising incentives of completing a four-year academic programme in three sessions, and admission of those without requisite entry qualifications. From reports, infrastructure deficit makes a resonant statement in these institutions. Well-trained lecturers, teaching and research, all of which aggregate to define a quality ivory tower are alien to these pseudo-academic set-ups.

A university worth its name is a global heritage. As an intellectual enclave, it is riveted by the pursuit of knowledge. These quacks in Ghana do not even hide their pretensions. Regrettably, our youths do not understand the difference between the two. Many of them may have fallen victim already, but many more need not be caught in the labyrinth any further. Through enlightenment by the NUC and the Nigerian High Commission in Ghana, a rescue drive could reduce the damage. It is in this context that we situate Okojie’s effort in stopping the University of Education, Winneba, Ghana, from awarding its degrees to students studying at one Hallmark Educational Bureau Nigeria Limited. The two institutions, NUC says, ran foul of its regulations on affiliation.

Indeed, the situation in the country is barmy. In May last year, the NUC closed 41 illegal universities out of the 67 that have found Nigeria a safe haven. Lagos alone is home to 12 of such institutions. Students from these bogus institutions, who are in their thousands, may have been the patrons of the one-block institutions in Ghana to satiate their appetite for university degrees. One of the schools, with just four rooms, runs undergraduate and postgraduate programmes up to the doctoral level. As a purported affiliate of a Caribbean university, it did not care a hoot about obtaining a licence to operate. “As a business school, our affairs are not run by the NUC, hence, certification from the NUC was not required,” an official of the school cheekily said. We disagree with this.

Again, recurrent strikes by Nigeria’s university lecturers, which make the academic calendar indeterminate, compel parents who can afford it to enrol their children in Ghanaian universities. For instance, from July 1 to December 17, 2013, academic activities in public universities were frozen by a strike, which the Academic Staff Union of Universities embarked on over decrepit state of infrastructure and unpaid allowances. It was only called off after the Federal Government acquiesced to the immediate release of N200 billion and a commitment to inject N1.3 trillion into the system over a five-year period, to address the rot.

Pointedly, our students’ exodus to Ghana is etched in our misbegotten public policies and ethos that have relegated education to the background. The carrying capacity of the universities cannot match the exponential increase in the number of students seeking admission annually. Out of the 1.7 million that applied for admission in 2013, only 520,000 got admissions to universities, polytechnics and colleges of education.

The facts starkly stare everyone in the face. A government that gives N1 billion each to its nine newly-established universities for take-off, but unashamedly budgets N64 billion for the Abuja City Gate, apparently, has not got its priorities right.

Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr. Kwabena Adjei says Ghanaians are lazy because they always sit on radio criticizing government without doing any work to support the country’s economy.

He says Ghanaians spend six days in the week on radio for commentary and the rest on the seventh day, which is unacceptable.

Dr. Adjei was speaking at the launch of the US$2 million Amir Complex, a modern shopping mall at Kisseiman in West Legon.

He argued that if the owners of the new shopping mall had chosen to lazy about talking on radio for six days in a week, the mall would not have been a reality.

“This should be a strong message to Ghanaians that there’s no free lunch in today’s world because everybody's contribution makes the country wealthy,” the NDC Chairman stressed.

Dr. Adjei is therefore urging Ghanaians to engage in something advantageous and desist from continuous radio and television commentary.

Meanwhile, the Director of “Amir Complex”, Stanley Tanor said the mall will support economic growth by contributing to government’s effort at creating jobs.

Tanor noted that the new mall will bring products and service close to people within Kisseiman and West Legon catchment area and ease the pressure on other malls in Accra.

Defilement cases on the increase - DOVVSU
The Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Ghana Police Service has expressed worry about the increasing cases of child sexual abuse in the country.

According to DOVVSU, most of the culprits in defilement cases especially in the Greater Accra region are family members of the victims.

Public Relations Officer of DOVVSU, ASP Irene Oppong, who revealed this to Citinews said statistics available to the unit indicate a rise in reported cases in 2013 over the previous year.

She said although her outfit is working assiduously to reduce the rate, the attitude of witnesses affects prosecution of cases in court.

“A police investigator will gather all evidence available to secure conviction of the suspect but the victims and complainants refuse to come to court to testify, which is a major challenge”, she bemoaned.

ASP Irene Oppong said in spite of the challenge, the unit is able to secure conviction for those, who corporate with them.

For the ladies out there. When you want to choose a man, choose one who is of strong personality, who has a good character and is responsible.
