I have heard this from 3 different Nigerians overseas, who were candid about life in their respective countries.

If you hear my neighbour's narrative you will laugh, he is a biggie (big boy) by all standards, yet, he says life there is really tough and most people shy away from saying the truth because of shame or personal feelings of inadequacy and embarrassment.

I realized from each person's narrative that to japa is not the koko, but to japa well, with enough money or a job waiting for you, is the main koko and should be an essential ingredient of the plan. Otherwise you may be japa-ing, from frying pan to fire.
There are multiple sides to this. I don't think it's entirely true you need to japa with a job waiting for you. If that's the case, most people won't even make the decision because there's hardly any job waiting for anyone. Just as I can count a few people struggling in their japa experiences, I can also count a few who are doing incredibly well. Frankly, I don't think one is necessarily more than the other.

When your husband told you that abroad isn't as easy as people think,he was right, have you tried to find out why your husband stopped communicating with you for a while?,for all I know, the man might be facing some real difficulties there ranging from immigration problem, work permit issues, and many others.....few years ago, someone close to me travelled abroad, communication with the mother and siblings was constant and good, till around 3 weeks after he travelled and he got into trouble,he spent around 9 months in jail and throughout all those period he was in jail, there was no communication with the mother who was almost dieing gradually thinking that his son has abandoned her not knowing what the guy was going through all those period, it's not easy out there my dear,be strong for your kids, seek help from your relatives if you have the option and most importantly, pray fervently for your husband.

I want to focus on data analysis only.
Can I build a career with that only?
I mean earning well
Most definitely. Some data analysts earn up to $100k per annum. You should focus on the tools of data analysis such as Tableau, SQL and Power BI. With just those three, you can get a decent remote job from anywhere in the world.

Lindajames1010:
What's the difference between Data science and data analysis?
Data science is a lot more rounded in terms of working with data. It looks at critical aspects of the data and conducts analysis from multiple angles. It's more of a science than an art, leveraging all kinds of tools from deep learning to bayesian analysis in its work with data. Data science isn't just about the data itself, but about the scientific tools with which to work with the data. Here , you would use mathematics, statistics, mathematical statistics, and all kinds of integrated approach in your analysis of the data.

Data analysis on the other hand is more about the data than it is about the tools. You often just work with the data across ETL pipelines, transform it, summarize it, visualize it, etc. Oftentimes, even if the analysis is complex, you may not need rigorous mathematical tools to work in your analysis. Software such as Tableau, Power BI, etc. come in handy here. In contrast to data science which is more of a science than an art, data analysis is more of an art than a science. Both however still have components of science and art in them.

Both approaches want to derive insight from the data and to inform decision using the data.

This is just my opinion smiley

Makes me wonder too. Not only that. They would have also resigned. It's sad Nigerian leaders never hold themselves responsible when incidents like these happen. It's mostly sorry for a day.

- Send a PM
- I'll ask for a snapshot of your student ID and your phone number in response to your PM. I may interrogate you if I find insufficient evidence.
- Once your details are confirmed okay, you should get the airtime in a few mins.
- I will check your account before replying your message. If your account is created after Jan 1, 2022, I'm sorry I won't be replying your email
- Please understand that I will be sharing the handles of those who receive airtime here for record purposes

Meanwhile, I have a scholarship for students running here. Check if you want to apply
https://www.nairaland.com/7063934/announcing-scholarship-students
The prize money is 100k for the winner and 40k for two honourable mentions (20k each). This scholarship is open for 4 weeks from 5th April 2022. That's until 7th of May, 2022.

You have one of two options:

Option 1:
-write a creative essay on the subject "2 plus 2..."

Your writing should show creativity and depth of thought. It should be no less than 1000 words. You can write more if you want, but it's preferable to keep it below 2000 words. Write in a clear and concise way and let your mind wander. The topic is "2 plus 2...". So, you are free to come up with whatever theme you find suitable. But stay on the subject. If your writing doesn't stay on the subject, you won't win.

Option 2:
-original elaboration on a mathematical topic.

Choose a topic in maths and extend it with your own ideas, showing what your thought process is. Of course, I'm not requiring that you invent a new mathematical process. That's not warranted. But I want you to find a maths topic that interests you and to attempt to extend it in a way that you think is original or fresh or intuitive. For example, you could take the binomial theorem and, say, extend it by arguing for a trinomial theorem, showing the formulas and all. Be inventive and creative.
There is no limit to what you can write here.

Updated!
EducationAnnouncing Scholarship For Students by cochtrane(op):
I’d like to thank everyone for taking out time to participate in this competition. Though it was not as intense as I expected it to be, there were still good submissions which showed sufficient creativity. My only grouse is that I couldn’t find an essay without extremely poor punctuation and/or very poor grammatical structure. There was ample time to get things right (more than 4 weeks), but it appears most people just made half-hearted attempts to turn in something. This is not impressive and frankly should not be rewarded. Naturally, it would mean there are no winners since none of the entries meet the required bar. However, not rewarding you guys for some of your work would perhaps be even worse.

This means I’m introducing a new twist. I’m cutting all prize money by half. I hope this will serve as motivation for you guys to take the next competition more seriously and try your best to turn in excellent work.

The winners this time are:
1st place ==> Olowomi11 ==> Prize money : 50k
1st runner-up ==> MrHistorian ==> Prize money: 10k
2nd runners-up ==> JasperjNr, Tekahashi, VillageBus ==> Prize money: 3.333k (split three ways)

Winners will receive a mail from me shortly requesting their details for transfer of the prize money.
Good luck!
Okay, please submit your interest this way:

You will make two submissions.
-a summary of your ideas which you will post here on nairaland
-your main submission/entry (essay or maths topic) which you will email to me. To establish communication with me, just send a PM.

All work must be your own. I will run submissions through plagiarism checkers to make sure. The sole requirement is that you must be a student in a Nigerian University

The prize money is 100k for the winner and 40k for two honourable mentions (20k each). This scholarship is open for 4 weeks from today. That's until 7th of May.

This has officially ended now. Results will be published between 15th and 17th of May. Goodluck smiley
Small update: new dates should now be 17th to 19th May
Results are out!
I have posted my assessments below of each person's contribution. Sadly, I could not find one essay without significant grammatical errors. You guys should have done better with QC'ing your entry before submission. Anyways, results of the winners will be posted later in the day. Watch this thread.

If you submitted an essay and your name is not here, then you very likely did not follow instructions by posting a summary of your essay on this thread.

I'm announcing a small scholarship for University students in the country. Watch out for this space in a few days where I'll make the announcement and state the requirements to qualify. Submissions will involve a creative essay or original mathematical thinking. Prize money for now is 100k for the winning entry and 20k for two honourable mentions. I'm hoping to increase this prize money next year significantly to possibly 1 million, but with stricter requirements.

If this interests you, follow this space We must do all we can to encourage independent thought and research among Nigerian students.

Glad to see this thread still making progress. If you are interested in data science tutorials and/or lectures at beginner to intermediate level, watch out for this space smiley. I'll be offering a series of lectures in the coming months for those interested who want to transition or stay motivated. Lectures may be paid though, cos my observation from giving free lectures is that they hardly make any significant impact.

ProgrammingRe: Chronicle Of A Data Scientist/analyst by cochtrane(m):
In data mining, most times we talk about the good news and very few times we talk about some bad news. Today, I'm making a small exception and working on information which brings some bad news. When we work on information like this, the idea is to prepare the concerned authorities to take actions which should maximize safety. So, this kind of work has its own objectives.

Though this year witnessed a crash of a military jet in the Northern part of the country, there hasn't been a crash of a commercial airliner in Nigeria for quite a while. Nevertheless, Nigeria appears a little notorious for some of its lax aviation safety procedures. Just today, there was a close shave with a Max Airline craft as reported in the news. But how likely is it that we could see another crash soon in Nigeria?

I looked at the data and tried to answer this. The time between events is sometimes modeled using an exponential distribution. I collected data from past airline crashes in Nigeria and was able to confirm this (Image 1). The curve is not so steep, but is exponential and confirms that property of duration between successive events. Using likelihood theory, one can arrive at a mean estimate for the parameter of the exponential distribution and then go from there. Here, the mean estimate is 782 days. This means, on average, the time between two crashes in Nigeria is a little over two years. Next, we arrive at a cumulative distribution using this parameter and then try to calculate the probability that there could be a plane crash after 1500 days from the last one which was on 21st May 2021 when a military jet crashed in Kaduna. The probability turns out to be quite high, about 0.85, i.e. 85% chance we will see another plane crash inside 1500 days or in 4 years (Image 2). How about in 500 days? A little less than a year and half? That turns out to be about 50/50. So, at least, given the data, the chances are quite high that we may see a plane crash in Nigeria before September next year.

Anyways, these are just random musings which have not taken into consideration external factors such as the improvement of aviation safety in the country since 2012 when we had the Dana crash, nor have I taken into consideration other factors such as the volume of flights in the country since airplanes started taking off. Still, it does look like reasonable analysis which authorities may want to pay attention to to help plan for eventualities.

Source of data is planecrashinfo

MMotimo:
The OP is doing well.
She knows the first rule - do not do anything for the sake of impressing the Joneses. If more Nigerians reason like she does and just exercised some financial discipline, they would have more money.

A car is a depreciating asset that would just gobble up her money. She would have to pay for regular maintenance and gas at the minimum. If she buys brand new, the dealerships will strangle her with their charges. If she buys a used vehicle, the roadside Kazeems won’t be any kinder. Some people, if they really thought about it, can trace their money struggles to the first vehicle they bought in their life - wiped out their savings and the recurring expenses just impoverished them. Never buy a car unless you really need one and make sure your income can accommodate the future expenses for it. Transportation is a means to an end, only buy what you can afford.
Good words! Couldn't have said it any better.
For most people in Nigeria, the desire to own a car centers chiefly around impressing people. If the need doesn't call for it, there's no reason to own one. But many will manufacture this need nevertheless.
