It isn't kindness that makes the system here work. It is the fear of the government. The fear of consequences that come when you fall on the wrong side of the law. The laws are designed to milk you dry with draconian fines if you offend and if you can't pay, or you're a serial repeat-offender, na prison straight.
I so love this wink
You could not have put it any better. It's good to be kind and everyone should be, but it's not kindness that makes a good society, squarely because, left to humans, nobody will be kind. Everyone will seek to take serious advantage where they can and they'll still claim they are kind while at it. They'll take your biscuit, tell you not to complain, and claim they did it in your favour because they are kind. But when the government cracks down in all ways, it will motivate that necessary kindness in people and they will become kind by force. You wrote beautifully.

I actually have an eye on that but I'm not really sure how to launch a career in that field. Maybe take a bootcamp afterwards? I know that's your field of specialty as I've been following you for a long time now and I'll be grateful to have you as a mentor in that regards. Please can I send you a PM if you don't mind?
Sure you can.

Honestly, I think you are already half of the way there with your actuarial background. I'd supposed you also use R already. If you understand some other programming language like python, you just need to find a certificate course in data science and understand exactly what it entails. Then you start shooting your CV out there

True, I’ve been thinking of it too. We can blame Buhari and the CBN governor all we like but the level of greed and get-rich-quick in everybody’s blood in Naija is also a big problem. It’s still the same people screaming about dollar rate that are desperately pushing the rate towards N1000 per dollar so that they can make more money when selling. What’s the use of making all that naira if the currency is practically worthless.
Let’s face it, the entire blame lies with the government and its policy makers. It’s generally not in humans to be nice or altruistic, especially on economic matters. Most people would try to exploit any deficits in a government’s policy or try to use them to their advantage. This has bred different techniques of paying less taxes or exploiting crude exchange rate policies. I’m sure even you will find yourself looking for a few holes once you get the Canada. If there’s an economic hole somewhere, best believe someone will try to exploit it. This has been studied severally in economics and is known as the efficient market hypothesis. Nigerians don’t owe the government altruism when it comes to the exchange rate which is a purely economic reality. Nigerians only owe the government the duty of operating within the scope of the law. It’s the government’s duty to implement sound economic principles that will punish speculators or stem any actions which threaten the nation’s currency. Using force won’t cut it. I know people may have different opinions, but the confidence in the government is at an extreme low and you can’t blame those who would exploit this for economic benefits. It’s the law of the market and is as old as time itself. It’s up to the government to join in this game and to play it well.

Not to veer off topic or be "that guy", but this your course is a very good platform for switching into data science/analytics with the potential to double that pay of a credit risk analyst.

What exactly are you trying to insinuate? Is 65k too much or too little for the Credit Analyst role at TD? Please could you make your statement/position less ambiguous?
You don't need to look too far. 65k is about right for a credit analyst at TD. Glassdoor confirms the same. Many managerial roles in commercial Canadian banks are just about 90-100k gross, if you are lucky.

Nawao. The way people are travelling with return ticket and no PTA these days is scary. The bank workers are not helping matters with their wuruwuru. They’re using the dollars to settle their own contacts. My dad was telling me how he deposited a thousand dollars in UBA last week and tried to get it back almost immediately, just to be told there was no dollar. They ended up giving him 850 after much drama.
Like joke like joke, we’ll soon get to the point where people may not even be able to get their dollars out of their so-called domiciliary bank accounts. They’ll just tell you point blank that your money isn’t there, even as you are looking at the figures on your bank app

I really would not advice anyone to change their POF to dollars at this crazy rate unless you’re leaving the country now now. it’s an artificial increase mostly caused by Emefiele’s announcement on monday and then fueled by panic. This wasn’t an exponential increase. it was rapid. i believe it’d go back to stability of the 600’s.
You are demonstrating extreme naivety about the problems of Nigeria, I have to say. If you know how intensely broke the country is, you’ll realize even this 700 is just the start of it. The latest news is the depletion of the ECA and it took an investigative news report to push that out, not the government. If by any chance the rate drops significantly, even corporate institutions are waiting to immediately suck it all up, driving it right back up. The situation is more than dire right now, and while it may be artificial because of the seeming facts, the true facts have the potential to make it much worse. Not to forget that the world is experiencing increasing inflation right now, the dollar is getting stronger, and Nigeria has never had good experience with economic shocks.

Frankly, I think we can all just chill and see what happens in the next few months. I’m sure we’ll be able to look back and say who’s wrong or right here. But my own intuition tells me it gets much worse from here. Same was said when we encroached into the 500’s during Covid. Today, 700’s is the norm. It’s just super naive to think this is driven merely by speculation. I think it’s more driven by the realities of the Nigerian market, a market whose frailties are becoming obvious day by day.

Good day house, I have done my research and I really want to be sure I am on the right path. I have a HND degree and have a over 3yrs work experience and also in my twenties. Is this enough profile to enter Into EE if I max a good score in my IELTS? And also what advice will you give to improve my chances. I await responses please.
Go use the CRS tool here to check your score. Your ND & HND qualifies as two or more certificates and with 3 years work experience you max out on experience. Use the CRS tool and see where you need to improve.

Good day house,
I am seeking opinion of the house on behalf of my uncle. His case is kind of complicated and he needs to thread carefully.
He travelled abroad, but after some years he lost his legal status due to some issues he had with his boss at work, the boss reported him and his visa was revoked. Due to his non-legal status and frustration, he decided to start the Canada EE process. While on the EE process, he was looking for ways to have legal status in the country again. The only way at that point was to use an arranged partnership with a lady who's a citizen of the country he resides. He applied for a spousal visa and it was granted. The spousal visa was granted after he has submitted his EE application. I forgot to mention he is married, his wife and kid only visits him once in a while from Nigeria. During his EE application, of course he included his wife and kid in the application, although as unaccompanied for CRS purpose. Now he recently got PPR, but he's concerned about the spousal visa which is still valid on his passport. Will there be a problem if he send the passport with that spousal visa (which was not gotten through his wife included in the EE application)? Will that be term as misrepresentation? because I don't think its possible to be legally married and at the same time be in a common law/partnership relationship with another person. Does IRCC still investigates after PPR? Can a PR be rejected after PPR?
Gurus in the house, kindly advise my uncle before he send the passport, which might trigger something else.

is the spousal visa from another country?

This case is very tricky. It is almost likely that they will enter his details into their system prior to issuing the visa on his passport and on those of his wife and kid. He would need to be super lucky for details on the spousal visa to not turn up, because that would immediately raise a red flag. Naturally, all investigations have been completed prior to issuing the PPR. It's a little surprising the spousal visa application didn't turn up then. Was that done in the US? Maybe the EE process was far gone before starting the spousal thing? You may want to provide more details regarding the country involved.

The bigger problem here is one of misrepresentation. I'm sure it states clearly in the email received by your uncle that he should inform if there's been any change whatsoever in his family composition and that failure to do so will render his visa invalid. If he doesn't therefore inform IRCC, it only takes a few flipping-over of his passport to see a spousal visa sticking out like a sore thumb. With all the information on that visa, it only takes a small computer search on their interconnected systems to reveal the details and show that his family composition is not what he claims. Hence, a possible denial of the visa and likely follow-up ban. And don't forget they are going to flip those pages to know where to put the new visa. He can only get away with it if the employee on duty then were a little carried away. So, to answer your question, "yes, a PR can be rejected even after PPR".

My advice: he may take the risk of sending in his passport and nothing will happen. The chances here are very low. A better option is to just go with the spousal visa and go ahead with what he had in mind originally before obtaining that spousal visa. Was it to divorce the person after a few years and then bring his wife and kid over? That may just be his best option, even though it's not legal. He should think about what he would have done in the first place if he hadn't gotten that PPR and go with that. Otherwise, he could be looking at effectively ruining both opportunities.

I didn’t sleep well last night, probably my worst night ever and I’m not even over it yet.
My POF is in Naira because IRCC uses official rate which happened to be around N8.5m for a family of 4. If I change in the black market and put in dom account at the rate of 580 to $ then, it won’ t be enough to meet up the 25kplus CAD for family of 4 so I picked the easiest option (leave it in naira) since that is all we have.
Last night I heard $ is now 710, so that is how all my life savings is depreciating for my eye like that, and ITA has not come. Still waiting for PNP to boost my score if possible since EE is still 500ish now. I’m sad but this japa is like my plan A. Yes I have a job here but I am tired!
I can’t even change the money again at 710 nah, my body is still shaking and I hope putting this out here will make me better
Your best bet was converting it to dollars to start with, regardless. Things can only get worse from here, not better. In addition, putting it in dollars would serve you well when you eventually leave Nigeria since that's likely what you would still have to do anyways before converting it to CAD. Going by IRCC's exchange rate is not even that safe, cos the official rate itself could even go up at any time and that can edge you out based on POF. It's a slippery slope.

Now that this has happened, I'd really just advise you to start holding a separate dollar account on the side, both as a possible addition to your POF in the future and as your preparation to convert to CAD eventually when you get your ITA>>AOC>>PPR. That's your best option in spite of the 700 rate.

I guess I'll start here and build.

Should be looking to build from here. Congrats again!

At the end of the day, there isn't that much difference in net pay between 65k and 75k.

Hello and good day to you.

Please, I'm curious about how abundant employment opportunities are for petroleum engineers (drilling, completion, reservoir and production engineers) as well as what entry level salary looks like. With respect to joining the regulatory bodies or acquisition of license to practice how does the process look like? Do you think it's very important to have Canadian experience/education in order to secure a job opportunity as I've been told that it is? Thank you for your overall contribution to this thread.
You got the best advice already. Oil & gas is not that great anymore in Canada in terms of potential and also in terms of employment opportunities. If you think you can, pivot to tech. Even if you don't pivot to tech and get a job in oil & gas, start training yourself in tech on the side and take it seriously. The opportunities in tech are just too numerous to go round and the earlier you start upskilling, the better.

Good day guys. Just landed in North York as a PR. I'm currently in Airbnb till the end of the month but I was hoping to to get some tips on how to get survival jobs and accommodation. Any tips would be appreciated. Please I already know about kijiji and rentals.ca. I mean like "don't live in Ajegunle or Iloabuchi down" or "you should be looking for an apartment that has heater etc etc" and "run from ogoaja work". Any advice will be appreciated. Strictly survival jobs cos I'm already fed up of my old job type and I hope to transition into tech by January. Thanks in advance.

Of course, you should be looking for an apartment that has a heater. You wan make Toronto cold hammer you? Lol.
Welcome to canada! smiley
North York is a good area for an immigrant. I don't know if there's any area there that isn't good. Toronto is not really like Lagos. I think a good advice is to find a roommate, because that way the rent could be more affordable. You can easily find a roommate in North York and pay less than $1000 for a very good 2-bed apartment. You may also want to consider Etobicoke, which is also a good area to stay in, I believe.

For survival jobs, go register yourself with the many employment agencies present around. There are a lot of them downtown and in Mississauga. You may be able to find a job quickly with these guys.

On transitioning into tech, I just wanted to let you know it's very possible. I have a handful of friends who have done this successfully. It may not be easy, but it is very possible. That's probably what you should focus o, the fact that it is very possible. A good starting point may be getting enrolled in many of the certificate programs in the top universities. Make sure to pick something you are comfortable with from the start and not keep experimenting about wasting your time.

Good luck!

I respect your opinion but honestly, it’s not a big deal and I understand why the dude denied being Nigerian. I respect and support his decision and I won’t judge him based on that. Idk if you’ve “LIVED” outside Canada & Nigeria and I don’t mean "visit" other countries but “lived”…. If you have then this shouldn’t be a surprise to you. I have lived in southeast Asia since 2016 and had my Master's and Ph.D. there and I can tell you I always claimed to be from Cape Town…when they ask where is that located I’ll say South Africa. I don’t associate with Nigerians there only coworkers, or church members, and neither do I live in a neighbourhood where there are lotta Nigerians. I was the only black dude in a Chinese-dominated estate that’s how strict I lived my life, never to be judged based on my country and I live with that rule to date. That’s why I love visiting Japan and South Korea they don’t ask the sentence “where you from”. I deny being Nigerian when I have to, it’s the stigma attached to the name Nigeria!. That’s why I hate the sentence “where are you from” it’s a trigger to some of the things I lost just by claiming to be Nigerian. So don’t judge anyone because he denied being Nigerian they have their reasons.

What you are defending is a lie of convenience. A lie that helps to avoid other possibly difficult questions. It’s okay if that’s something you also do, but it’s untenable to claim that it’s not a big deal. It is in fact a big deal. We may not have been able to choose where we all come from, but we owe it to our future generations or our children to stand tall and accept our identities. I hate to make the comparison, but if you can make excuses for this, who is to say you won’t make excuses for a visibly white, but genetically black person who claims to be white just to escape the travails his race is going through when they could instead join the campaign to right the wrong in society? I’m not making this up. There have been cases and they make for stunning stories of years of lies. Would you perhaps even go further to change your skin color if the chance presented itself because it will save you even more trouble and/or more stares? Think about that!

Some people think they are compassionate or that they are good people, but they have hardly passed a true test such as this where they have to admit who they truly are, or to which group they belong in the face of whatever disadvantages it may bring. But is it even truly disadvantageous to say you are Nigerian? If you are good people, shouldn’t you care to let those who deride Nigerians see an exception in you? I think the question you should ask yourself is if you want to continuously be the example that will make others see Nigerians in better light or if you just want to run away from your identity because it is inconvenient.

Perhaps you are a Christian. If you are, also ask yourself, “what would Jesus do?” wink

NB: I am no Christian

I’d like to thank everyone for taking out time to participate in this competition. Though it was not as intense as I expected it to be, there were still good submissions which showed sufficient creativity. My only grouse is that I couldn’t find an essay without extremely poor punctuation and/or very poor grammatical structure. There was ample time to get things right (more than 4 weeks), but it appears most people just made half-hearted attempts to turn in something. This is not impressive and frankly should not be rewarded. Naturally, it would mean there are no winners since none of the entries meet the required bar. However, not rewarding you guys for some of your work would perhaps be even worse.

This means I’m introducing a new twist. I’m cutting all prize money by half. I hope this will serve as motivation for you guys to take the next competition more seriously and try your best to turn in excellent work.

The winners this time are:
1st place ==> Olowomi11 ==> Prize money : 50k
1st runner-up ==> MrHistorian ==> Prize money: 10k
2nd runners-up ==> JasperjNr, Tekahashi, VillageBus ==> Prize money: 3.333k (split three ways)

Winners will receive a mail from me shortly requesting their details for transfer of the prize money. Winners will be strongly vetted to make sure they are students, because that was also a requirement for entry.
Good luck!
