The bolded is part of the biography of Ojukwu's father so my dear, I know what I am saying.
Also, if it was cos of the welcoming nature of the yorubas that pple flocked to Lagos like you said, where is it that other yoruba states outside Lagos don't share the diversity that Lagos has or the yorubas there a different breed of non-welcoming yorubas.

Lagos was populated even before the civil war, it was the capital of Nigeria then and had pple from all over Nigeria. Ojukwu's father(the then richest man in Africa) had lots and lots of property all over Lagos Island, I have relatives whose Parents where living in Lagos long before the civil war, had businesses and investments in Lagos and even worked as civil servants in Lagos as it was the capital then. It is not unfortunate that anybody was welcoming anybody, we decided to remain as one Nigeria after the civil war and that gives every Nigerian the right to live in any part of the country he/ she chooses to and Lagos being the economic and administrative capital of Nigeria attracted more pple than anywhere else in the country which is very normal as economic geography stipulates.
My point, Nigerians built Lagos together, all tribes in Nigeria contributed to making Lagos what it is today.

"Eko" was infact a war camp after Benin empire captured it not before. Lagos was originally inhabited by the Awori subgroup of the Yoruba people in the 15th century,who called it "Oko". The seaport is just an example and many landlocked countries are poor compared to their non-landlocked counterparts. Check every continent, the landlocked countries are the poorest. The benefits of having a seaport can not be overestimated.
My point is migration and commercialisation go hand in hand, one cannot exist without the other and that's the reason why Lagos is populated.

No... a population with good purchasing power and development go hand in hand..

the reason Lagos is populated is because there was a civil war and during and after war people seek refuge in other places. unfortunately Lagos and Yorubas were welcoming and refugees were allowed to stay in the name of one Nigeria and some of those refugees prospered and settled in those places..

What's up with all these accommodating ? Nobody was forced to join Nigeria. If you feel the balance in lagos is threatened,the best thing to do is to declare lagos a state. Or better still,support those who wants to leave the union and you can have your lagos in peace. Lagos owes Nigeria and not the other way around. Why some peeps here feel Lagos is what it is because of the ingenuity of the indigenes is very false. Lagos was commercial yes we agree. But the infrastructure that was built by the FG can not be replicated by the state government because it would take a massive number of years and a very large amount of funds to prosecute. Lagosians should be grateful for the efforts made by the british and the FG in their state. What they have benefited, no other state has received a quarter of it excerpt abuja,and we all know how abuja is today. If we were to practice fiscal federalism, who would even bother to leave his region down to the lagos? Apart from lagos,I cannot live in any other state in the SW. The truth is that what lagos got is as a result of the bias and injustice that Nigeria as an entity encourages. I see no reason why 80% of the infrastructure of Nigeria would be in only one state when we have 36 !! It doesn't encourage development.

Please I need you to shed light on some "facts" stated in your comment above, truly we know "Eko" means war camp and it was used for that purpose by benin empire. The only documented and verifiable fact about benin empire not bini people started from 1180 when it was established, you may not know but I will definitely state it that bini people, benin empire are descendants of igodomigodo and their kings are known as ogiso not oba, the Oba era began with the establishment of benin empire in 1180 but yorubaland has been existing before then. The people who lived in Yorubaland, at least by the seventh century BC, were not initially known as the Yoruba, although they shared a common ethnicity and language group. The historical Yoruba develop in situ, out of earlier (Mesolithic) Volta-Niger populations, by the 1st millennium B.C.E.
Archaeologically, the settlement at Ife can be dated to the 4th century BC, with urban structures appearing in the 12th century. We're all refined here and shouldn't use oral traditions or myths which we know may have been exaggerated over time as a point when we comment. The yorubas have a history that predates the establishment of benin empire in 1180 and these are documented but I keep wondering about the documented history or artifact of igodomigodo before 355 BC because even the igodomigodo dynasty was not dated until recently by one of their wack websites which means it is not verifiable.
The Benin empire took advantage of a scattered region by capturing those regions but this ended with the establishment of the Oyo empire in 1600.
I will only reply if you can give us verifiable facts of the existence of the bini people or igodomigodo dynasty (ended 1091)before yoruba please don't cite oral tradition or myths.

Lagos was never a "war camp"... Lagos was an agricultural settlement controlled by the yorubas.. it was also used as a center of trade with the yorubas allowing people of other tribes to make trades..

the yorubas from time memorial have been welcoming and tolerant. you can't get facts of bini people because they were originally a sub-yoruba group with a slightly different language that's why the yorubas allowed them have a kingdom...

If the binis were that powerful they would have more population than the yorubas...

I don't disagree with you and why most pple want to come to Lagos is cos it's the commercial hub of Nigeria. Igbos and educated/enlightened pple are business minded. Opportunities abound in Lagos, most companies have their offices/HQ in Lagos and economic geography tells us that pple migrate to where the jobs are, it's a very natural reaction. Commercial cities all over the world have the laregest populatIion. If there was another seaport outside of Lagos pple would migrate to that city too.

The sea ports you boast off plus all other major infrastructure in Lagos was built using oil proceeds.

Nigeria has well over 800km of coastline with Apapa and Tin Can ports not having berthing space of more than 5km max.

If the other coastal cities in the Niger Delta were developed with their rightful proportional revenue from their oil wealth which happened to have been diverted to Lagos, Abuja and Kano do you think your overcrowded slum village can compete?

If anything Lagos owes Nigeria and not the other way as the financial transactions entered in Lagos are geared towards other regions and not only Lagos.

FYI : Salt was a major trade commodity in the trans sahelian trade with Borno providing salt from Lake Chad. Some of the salt mined from the salty beds of the Chad lake found their way inland. And if you must know before any yoruba set foot in Lagos, the Binis had already occupied it as a war camp. You guys should as a matter of urgency stop claiming Lagos as a yoruba achievement because you had little or nothing to do with its initial occupation, development and financial progress.
