Presidential Aspirant Prof Oluremi, Wants to Turn NYSC Into Compulsory Military Service

Presidential aspirant, Professor Remi Sonaiya, has promised to amend the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Act and turn the programme into a compulsory one-year military service for Nigerian graduates if she wins the 2019 presidential election.

The aspirant, running on the platform of KOWA Party (KP), disclosed this in a statement about her strategy released on the platform of her voter education initiative, Restart Nigeria, earlier in May 2018.

In the statement titled, "Running East, Looking for a Sunset... Thoughts on a viable National Strategy", Professor Sonaiya listed five important areas where she hopes to improve the country if she ever becomes Nigeria's president.

She argued that Nigeria has been suffering from decades of indiscipline and disorganisation that can only be solved by a deliberate well-structured system of discipline.

The Nigerian Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has closed down indefinitely the newly established REACH FM allegedly owned by Governor Rochas Okorocha for illegally operating without licence.

Disclosing this to newsmen in Owerri on Wednesday, the capital of Imo State, Director, Media Operation Unit of NBC, Alhaji Bugudu Almalik said that listeners of the illegally established radio would be wondering why the “Reach Fm 104.7” purportedly owned by Governor Rochas Okorocha has suddenly gone off air, he maintained that reason was that the Nigerian Broadcasting Corporation has shut down the station.

Alhaji Almalik further hinted that neither the name of Rochas Okorocha nor any member of his family was issued with radio operating license, and wondered why individual could resume operation of a radio station when neither his name nor his agent reflected in the board of trustees of the firm that applied for Reach FM....

World leaders should boycott Russian President Vladimir Putin’s VIP box at next month’s World Cup opening unless he takes steps to protect Syrian civilians, Human Rights Watch said Tuesday.

Russia, which hosts the world’s most-watched sporting event for the first time this year, is a key backer of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s regime and arguably the most powerful broker in the seven-year-old war.

“In hosting one of the most televised events in the world, Russia is courting world public opinion and looking for respect,” HRW’s executive director, Kenneth Roth, said in a statement.

“World leaders should signal to President Putin that unless he changes track and acts to end atrocities by Russian and Syrian forces in Syria, they won’t be in their seats in the VIP box with him on opening night.”

Billions of people worldwide are expected to watch the World Cup on television and HRW argued that Moscow’s responsibility in the suffering of Syrian civilians should not be forgotten.

Russia is the main exporter of weaponry to the Syrian regime and its forces provide on-the-ground support to government forces and allied militia.

The New York-based watchdog has documented Russian-Syrian joint military operations that “have caused thousands of civilian casualties”, including recently in Eastern Ghouta near Damascus.

Roth warned that millions of other civilians faced the same fate in upcoming operations, especially in the northwestern province of Idlib that still largely escapes government control.

“World leaders should not allow a sporting event to gloss over a pattern of atrocities in Syria that now looms over two million civilians,” he said.

Sen. Boroffice, who is the Chairman, Senate committee on Science and Technology also tasked the Ondo State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Gbenga Adeyanju, to ensure that necessary machinery are put in motion to ensure the arrest of the hoodlums who attacked the journalists while performing their lawful duties.

The Coalition of Northern Groups on Monday in Kaduna asked President Muhammadu Buhari and former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, who are above 70 years, not to contest the presidency of the country in 2019.

The group said such leaders were responsible for where the country found itself, adding that the country should be led by young Nigerians that could take it to the Promised Land.

The CNG’s position was contained in a communiqué it issued shortly after the end of a two-day summit which was held at the Arewa House, Kaduna on Monday.

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has fixed May 26 for mop-up exam for over 12,000 candidates across the country.

The candidates that are qualified to participate in the rescheduled exam are those whose biometrics were not captured during the initial period of the UTME in March,

Also candidates who are yet to see their results since the end of the examinations in March till date and have not been involved in any form of malpractice, those who were unable to print out their e-slip before the earlier examinations and those whose centres were cancelled for suspected malpractices but were not involved in malpractice will also participate.

Minister of Works, Babatunde Fashola Inspects The Second Niger Bridge Construction Progress

Governor Willie Obiano received the Minister of Works, Power and Housing, Babatunde Fashola who was on a one-day working visit to inspect the ongoing Federal government projects in the State, at the Governor's Lodge, Amawbia, Anambra State.

After he was received at the State's Border with Enugu at Amansea by the State Commissioner for Road Infrastructure, Furniture and Maintenance, Mr Marcel Ifejiofor, the Minister proceeded to inspect work on the 1.59 kilometer second Niger Bridge.

During the visit, it was observed that piling work has been done 15 percent from the Delta end while pile cases to be used for reinforcing the foundation of the bridge, had started arriving.

After the exercise, the Governor engaged the Minister in a close-door meeting where discussions centered on the Super interchange that the State proposes to construct around Revenue House Junction, Agu-Awka, the Second Niger Bridge, the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway, the refund of the over 50 billion naira owed the State on Federal works among other issues.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are officially husband and wife!

The two exchanged vows Saturday in a gorgeous ceremony at St. George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle, in front of 600 guests (and millions of people watching worldwide).

Notable wedding attendees included Oprah, Serena Williams, James Blunt, Elton George, the Beckhams and George and Amal Clooney.

Markle was escorted to Windsor Castle by her mother, Doria Ragland. Prince Charles walked the former actress down the aisle, as her father, Thomas Markle, was too ill to attend the ceremony.

After the wedding, Harry and Meghan stepped out to acknowledge the 200 representatives in attendance from charities that Harry supports. From there, the newlyweds took a carriage ride around Windsor Town that lasted about 25 minutes.

Following the ride, the newlyweds will head to a reception at St. George’s Hall, where the 600 wedding guests are expected to enjoy a standing-only meal with light bites.

Only 200 guests are invited to the following reception at Frogmore House. Hosted by Prince Charles, it’s for select family and friends of the bride and groom. That’s where Markle is expected to break with tradition and possibly give a speech. The palace hasn’t confirmed any musical guests, but it’s rumored that Elton John, the Spice Girls or even Ed Sheeran (despite his repeated denials) might perform. .

Drake has always kept things mysterious in his relationships, as rumors of him dating Rihanna, Jennifer Lopez, or Serena Williams never really manifested with anything but that. The latest girl in Drake's orbit was English singer, Raye, but it seems that there might be a new girl in town.

A track suitted-out Drake was spotted yesterday in Toronto, walking down the street with a gorgeous young woman, wearing a red tube top and some black air forces. While the woman's identity isn't 100% confirmed, sources believe her to be model Malaika Terry. The police in Gombe on Tuesday charged 50-year-old Samaila Zakari at a magistrates’ court with raping and impregnating his 15-year-old daughter.

In the First Information Report, the police said Zakari of Deba town in Yamaltu/Deba Local Government Area of Gombe State, committed the acts on May 2 and May 8.

The prosecution said that about 10pm on the mentioned dates, the accused took his biological daughter to his matrimonial room and had canal knowledge of her without her consent.

The prosecution further stated that the girl was currently carrying a two-months-old pregnancy for her father.

The prosecution said the accused committed incest and rape by his action contrary to section 390 and 282 of the Penal Code.

However, the accused pleaded not guilty to the charges before the magistrate, Mr. Dorabo Sikam.

The Prosecutor, Insp. Baba Shekari, asked for the adjournment of the case to enable the police to complete their investigation.

The magistrate adjourned the case until May 21 and ordered that the accused be remanded in prison custody.

President Donald Trump said Tuesday that his wife, Melania, will come home from the hospital in a few days, after receiving medical treatment this week for a kidney condition the White House said is noncancerous.

“Our great First Lady is doing really well. Will be leaving hospital in 2 or 3 days. Thank you for so much love and support!” Trump tweeted.

The first lady, 48, underwent an “embolization” procedure Monday morning at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center outside Washington, her office announced. The president visited her Monday evening and tweeted that the procedure was “successful” and that his wife was in “good spirits.”

Mrs. Trump’s spokeswoman had said on Monday that the first lady was likely to remain hospitalized for “the duration of the week.”

The White House has not offered any additional information about the first lady’s condition, citing her privacy. Vice President Mike Pence, however, described the procedure as “long planned” as he opened a speech Monday night in Washington.

She was last seen in public on Wednesday at a White House event where she and the president honored military mothers and spouses for Mother’s Day. She later accompanied the president to Joint Base Andrews in Maryland to welcome home three Americans who had been detained in North Korea.

Two urologists who have no personal knowledge of Mrs. Trump’s condition said the most likely explanation for the embolization procedure is a kind of noncancerous kidney tumor called an angiomyolipoma.

They’re not common but tend to occur in middle-aged women and can cause problematic bleeding if they become large enough, said Dr. Keith Kowalczyk of MedStar Georgetown University Hospital.

“The treatment of choice” is to cut off the blood supply so the growth shrinks, added Dr. Lambros Stamatakis of MedStar Washington Hospital Center. Doctors do that with an embolization, meaning a catheter is snaked into the blood vessels of the kidney to find the right one and block it.

Most of the time, these benign tumors are found when people undergo medical scans for another reason, but sometimes people have pain or other symptoms, Kowalczyk said. Many times, embolization patients go home the same day or the next.

Hollywood actress Taraji P. Henson was completely shocked by Kelvin Hayden’s marriage proposal after quietly dating since 2015.

The Academy-Award nominated actress, 47, says Hayden made dinner plans at a restaurant where they had their first date, but she didn’t quite catch on until later.

After unveiling the second generation Amaze sedan at the Auto Expo 2018, Honda Cars India is now inching closer to the market launch of the compact sedan. The 2018 Honda Amaze has been scheduled for launch on May 16 and bookings are already open.

Honda has already confirmed that the first 20,000 bookings will get the new Amaze at a special introductory price. Though the company is tight-lipped about the pricing, a report in Zee Business claims that the new Amaze will be priced from Rs 5.6 lakh for the base variant and all the way up to Rs 9.6 lakh (ex-showroom) for the top-end diesel automatic trim. If the report is anything to go by, the starting price of the 2018 Amaze will be around Rs 10,000 higher than the model it replaces.

Days after her boyfriend, Adekunle Gold, called out Nollywood for using his songs without consent, legendary musician, Sir Victor Uwaifo, has said singer Simi is in trouble for "stealing" his intellectual property, 'Joromi'.



Professor Uwaifo's recognition soared when his song 'Joromi' became a hit in 1969. However, he says the song has now become a victim of intellectual property theft as Simi failed to give credit to him when she released her own version in 2017.



Uwaifo made this known in an interview with SaharaReporters at the Annual General Meeting of Copyright Society of Nigeria COSON, in Lagos. .



The former commissioner for arts and culture in Edo State described copyright and Intellectual property theft as a very serious issue in Nigeria, saying it must be dealt with urgently as it is reducing the creativity of the new generation of musicians.



According to him, the process of making music has now significantly changed from what it used to be in his time, as “more mediocres” are now in the game.

"Copyright is a very serious business and the contravention of copyright laws is more serious than you can imagine. Most people still believe that someone can just pick somebody's work and use it for his own benefit.

You know one single track is equivalent to research journal and then a whole record is equivalent to a book publication, so people don’t understand it. It takes a lot of research to be able to do one piece of music.

The composition, the lyrics, the music, the score, the arrangement, the production and booking of the studio all cost money, and someone will just come and take the work and use it as his own or probably do an advert on it.”

Uwaifo recalled how he sued Pepsi for N500million for using one of his songs in one of its adverts without following the due process.

“Joromi' is a franchise; the name never existed before. For example, if I use the trademark of one of these soft drinks, it is wrong. So Simi is in trouble.” .

The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board generated a princely N8.453billion from the sales of forms to applicants seeking admission into tertiary institutions in Nigeria in 2018, PREMIUM TIMES can authoritatively report.



A top official of the Board told this newspaper Friday morning that the revenue came from payments made by 1,602,762 candidates who registered for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) held across the country in March.



Part of the revenue also came from registration fees paid by 135, 670.00 Direct Entry (DE) candidates, our source said. The official asked not to be named because he did not obtain official permission to divulge the details to journalists.



Each of the total 1,798,438 UTME and direct entry candidates paid N5,500 for the forms out of which N4,700 goes to JAMB’s coffers while N800 is remitted to banks and suppliers of reading texts to applicants, the official further explained.



The number of applicants was lower this year following reforms in the application process which effectively blocked multiple registration by candidates. About N1.8million UTME and DE candidates sought tertiary admissions in 2017.



It is not exactly clear how much the Board will remit to the Federal Government this year after settling computer-based test centres, and paying other service providers and exam officials.



In 2017, the examination body paid in N7.8 billion to the government. Our source said the remittance for 2018 will be close to that amount.

“As you know, change of course and universities are ongoing,” the official said. “It is only after we are done with the entire admission process for the year that we will be able to determine the total revenue for the year.”
Our source said since the arrival of Is-haq Oloyede, a professor, as registrar, JAMB had ceased to request funding from the federal government for its capital and recurrent expenditures.

“The registrar is now asking the government to allow JAMB handle the payment of salaries and allowances to its personnel. He believes that will enable the board to improve the working condition of its staff by paying them better.
“Since he is blocking loopholes for stealing and eradicating corruption, the registrar believes it is important that staff are better paid from the revenues they help make every year. That way, they will not be tempted to revert to corrupt acts.”
The official said Mr. Oloyede has also asked the government to allow JAMB spend N2billion from its revenue this year, and another N2billion next year, to upgrade its corporate headquarters in Abuja and improve its state offices across the country.

“But as you know, there has to be approval and everything has to be appropriated before any spending can be made,” he said.
When contacted, Prof. Oloyede confirmed JAMB has made “more than N8billion” from sales of forms but declined further details. He directed further enquiries on the matter to the spokesperson of the Board, Fabian Benjamin.



Mr. Fabian confirmed the information provided by our source but added,

Days after the US president walked away from a three-year-old deal that mandated rigorous scrutiny of Iranian facilities, senior administration officials said monitoring should continue regardless.

Known officially as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), the deal between Tehran and major world powers forces Iran to open any site to inspectors within 24 days at most and introduced 24-hour remote surveillance at some sites.

Supporters of the Obama-era accord argue it provided “the world’s most robust” monitoring regime, allowing access to the Islamic republic’s most sensitive nuclear sites.

Speaking at a rally in Indiana on Thursday Trump said tough inspections were still needed.

“We must be able to go to a site and check that site. We have to be able to go into their military bases to see whether or not they’re cheating,” he said.

The White House is demanding the existing inspection regime, however imperfect, continue under the aegis of the International Atomic Energy Agency, the UN nuclear watchdog.

“We expect Iran will continue to implement the Additional Protocol and cooperate with the IAEA whether or not the JCPOA remains in place,” one senior administration official said.

A second official confirmed to AFP on Thursday that Washington still wanted the inspections.

Other signatories to the Iran deal — including Tehran, China and European powers — have vowed to press ahead with the agreement’s implementation.

But officials are privately skeptical about how long it can survive, particularly if the United States imposes sanctions on European companies doing business in Iran.

Manchester United have unveiled their third kit for the 2018/2019 season.

“Adidas football has today revealed Manchester United’s third kit for the 2018/19 season,” the club announced on their official website on Friday.

“The new shirt is inspired by the 50th anniversary of United’s historic first European Cup win – the first for any English team in the competition.

“The new navy blue jersey takes its cue from the royal blue kit worn by Sir Matt Busby’s men in their victory over Benfica at Wembley in May 1968.

“The Portuguese were beaten 4-1 after extra-time, thanks to goals from Sir Bobby Charlton (2), George Best and Brian Kidd, and the gold detailing on the adidas logo and club crest pays direct homage to that magical success.

Chris Brown is facing fresh legal problems has a woman has named him in a lawsuit, saying she was raped and assaulted in his home, Vulture reports.

The unidentified woman says she was raped by another rapper named Young Lo at a party she was forced to attend at the singer’s house.

The woman’s lawyer, Gloria Allred, at a press conference released details about the alleged rape and assault, and the circumstances surrounding it.

The incident was said to have occurred between the night of February 23 and the morning of February 24 in 2017.

The lady was said to have attended a concert at West Hollywood nightclub when she had her phone confiscated, and when she requested to have it back, Young Lo told her she didn’t need it as they were heading to an after party at Chris Brown’s house.

When she arrived at the house, “Brown handed each female guest a clear pill filled with white powder and instructed them to take it to have a good time,” Allred said, although her client refused to use it.

The lady said she continued to demand for her phone and Young Lo refused, which forced her mother, who had been trying to reach her, to use the tracker app to locate the lady’s phone and send the police.

Chris Brown reportedly refused to let the police in when they arrived, forcing them to leave.

Eventually, Allred said, her client was confined in a room where she became a victim of what was described as “horrific sexual assault” which has left her “severely traumatised.”

Chris Brown wasn’t named as one of the people who sexually assaulted her, but it is said he may have pushed a sofa in front of the bedroom door to block her from leaving.

For everyone else... what an ending, right? Marvel shocked fans by doing something they have never done before... introducing a villain that actually won. In fact, in most films, comic book based or not, the villain is usually defeated by the end of the movie. It is rare that the bad guy actually achieves his goal, but Thanos pulled it off and collected every Infinity Stone and snapped his fingers.

The "snap" killed off half of the universe, including some of our favorite characters.

Now, anyone who was emotionally distraught at the end of the film should take a deep breath. In the comic book world, no one stays dead for long. Nobody. The same will prove true in the comic movie world. Although characters like Black Panther and Spider-Man turned to ashes right before our eyes, we already know that Tom Holland (Spider-Man) begins filming a sequel to Homecoming this Summer, and a Black Panther 2 is already in the works.

That means that somehow, the heroes will be resurrected. One cool possibility is the "Theory of the Six," which focuses on how none of the original Avengers perished and they will somehow manipulate time. Set photos of the original six in their costumes from the battle of New York in the first Avengers film seem to back up this theory.

Another theory revolves around Ant-Man, who can enter the Quantum Realm, a place where he shrinks so small that both time and space become irrelevant.

Although several fan theories will ultimately be shot down when Avengers 4 hits theaters next year, one thing is for certain. Several characters, even ones that died, are set to star in the next film.

Former Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson is sitting up and talking to his family following emergency surgery for a brain haemorrhage, media reports said Tuesday.

Widely considered to be the most successful manager in the history of British football, Ferguson, 76, won 38 trophies in more than 26 years in charge of United, including 13 Premier League titles and the Champions League twice.

Britain’s Mail Online said the Scot, who retired in 2013, was out of a coma and showing promising early signs of recovery following the hemorrhage on Saturday.

“Surgery went very well and the 76-year-old’s response to treatment has given encouragement and cautious optimism to those close to him,” the report said.
“However, they recognize it will still be a slow road to full recovery as he continues to be assessed.”

United midfielder Michael Carrick, who played under Ferguson, has spoken of the respect in which his former boss is held.

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC, has shut Peace Standard Pharmaceutical Limited, Bioraj Pharmaceutical Limited and Emzor Pharmaceuticals Ind. Ltd. after they were implicated in the codeine syrup crisis.

The Director-General of the Agency, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye disclosed this in a statement on Monday.

Adeyeye said the decision was taken following findings from investigations and inspections at the affected companies.


The statement said,

“Due to insufficient evidence gathered and apparent resistance to provide needed documents during our inspection on May 2, 2018, at the respective companies in Ilorin and Lagos, respectively, it has become necessary to shut down all the product lines of the three companies

– Peace Standard Pharmaceutical Limited, plots 3 & 8, Adewole Industrial Estate, Lubcon Avenue, Ilorin, Kwara State; Bioraj Pharmaceutical Limited, 405 Kaima Road, Ilorin, Kwara State and Emzor Pharmaceuticals Ind. Ltd., Ajao Estate, Lagos. This is to allow for a full and comprehensive investigation.

The three companies, therefore, remain closed.”

“The reopening of the manufacturing companies will depend on the level of cooperation that is shown during the comprehensive investigation.

“The DG constituted a task force to be made up of NAFDAC directors in charge of registration and regulatory affairs; narcotics and controlled substances; and drug evaluation and research.

“Members of PMG-MAN in the committee included the Executive Secretary of PMG-MAN, Fidson Healthcare; May & Baker PLC; and Emzor Pharmaceutical Industries.

“A team of nine NAFDAC and ten mobile police officers had been sent to Ilorin, Kwara state on May 2, 2018, to carry out an investigatory inspection at the companies of the two different pharmaceutical companies that are licensed to manufacture codeine-containing syrup, and which were implicated in the BBC documentary.”

Our source recalls that the Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole, on Tuesday directed the National Agency for Food, Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC, to ban with immediate effect further issuance of permits for the importation of codeine as active pharmaceutical ingredient for cough preparations.
