A former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, on Monday, said he supported the re-election bid of Governor Willie Obiano because he had yet to see a credible person to replace the incumbent.

Soludo said this during the inauguration of Obiano’s re-election campaign at the Dr. Alex Ekwueme Square, Awka, on Monday.

The ex-CBN helmsman said Obiano had the best blueprint to sustain and consolidate the achievements put in place by the All Progressive Grand Alliance in the state since 2006.

He added, “I have not seen a credible opposition in Anambra State; not in 2017. I have heard some names running for this election; but I ask myself, ‘are these people running for a catechist’s position, because such names can only be good in such job, not for governor.

“We don’t want anybody to learn on the job on the Anambra State governorship seat. We don’t want to go back to Egypt.”

Soludo said he was called upon by many stakeholders to run for the November 18 poll but he told them that “if it’s not broken, why mend it.”

He alleged that some of the candidates contesting the November poll were doing so to pursue vendetta, while others were counting on the support of police, army and the Independent National Electoral Commission to win the election.

Soludo believed that the re-election of Obiano would sustain the zoning formula that had been entrenched in the political system of the state.

The good people of Umunya, men and women, were overjoyed to receive the working governor who has done a lot of works in the community including civic centre, roads and a connecting bridge with another bridge and many other roads currently under construction.

You see, I always stay away from politicians who have politics as only source of income. These set are dangerous, wicked and have no human sympathy. They'll quickly dump their supporters at any point in time. They are normally referred to as career politicians

Not that those who have other sources of income apart from politics are all good but the former are extremely worse.

A particular government gave a power contract to a particular politician (names withheld by me) but instead of the man executing the contract, he called one of his "subjects" who's skilled in that field and gave it to him. There is no way the guy will complete such a huge contract without making at least 500k, that's empowerment! Do you know there are equally some shameless politicians who will take everything to themselves, even an ordinary culvert?

It's only less than 10% of politicians in Nigeria will do anything meaningful for their supporters, no matter how committed they are, because the moment they trigger anything that will make them overly satisfied, they'll no longer be available in the next election. After seeing José Mourinho hijack their Romelu Lukaku deal and letting Nemanja Matic go to Old Trafford, Chelsea have undeniably strengthened a direct rival while weakening themselves.

Opinion has been divided on the wisdom of Chelsea selling Nemanja Matic to Manchester United for £40m. There are those who say top teams, especially defending champions, should never sell to direct rivals, and those who believe the money was too good to refuse down for a player who has just turned 29.

It is being argued that Chelsea have just signed an upgrade in Tiémoué Bakayoko for the same price, at least a player Antonio Conte regarded as an upgrade in the same position, and at just 22 the promising France midfielder offers many more years of service than Matic, whose sale effectively means the former Monaco player has joined for free.

All of that makes sense, yet what is equally undeniable is that United were delighted to land Matic, a player José Mourinho knows well, and that along with Romelu Lukaku the two new signings made highly promising debuts in the first game of the season at Old Trafford. Never mind for the moment that United were only playing West Ham, or that it is usually unwise to read too much into the first game of the season, the question to be asked is why Chelsea are making life so easy for their former manager and his new team.

Lukaku, let us not forget, was originally a Chelsea player and was widely expected to return to Stamford Bridge when he left Everton. Perhaps so widely expected that Chelsea may have let the grass grow under their feet and failed to anticipate United making a pre-emptive strike. Conte was understood to be furious – when is he ever otherwise? – and has appeared to be unhappy with his employers ever since and ended up buying Álvaro Morata, all too clearly a second-choice target and one who was not trusted to start on the opening day.

We all know how that went. Morata did come on to start a belated fightback as Chelsea lost their bearings and most of their composure against Burnley, but as striking debuts go it was nothing to compare with Lukaku – “the manager wants me to be a leader for the team” – and the beginning-of-a-new-era feeling most observers noted at Old Trafford.

News reaching us has it that Veteran entertainer Charles Oputa aka Charly Boy [Area Fada] has suspended the daily #ResumeOrResign anti-Buhari protests indefinitely. This comes a day after members of the group were assaulted at Wuse market in Abuja. .

Announcing the suspension at Unity Fountain in Abuja on Wednesday, Charly Boy said the next line of action would be made known in the days ahead. He said even though members of the group had received death threats, they were not deterred. .

Just at the moment we thought the era of students having to stay an extra 2 to 3 years in school due to unnecessary strikes was over, ASUU lecturers have embarked on yet another strike.

It certainly felt like Deja Vu when the National President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Dr. Biodun Ogunyemi, announced the strike on Monday at a meeting of the National Executive Council (NEC) of ASUU in Abuja that there would be an indefinite strike and that during the strike, there will be no teaching, no examination and no attendance of statutory meetings of any kind in any of the union’s branches across the country.

It is easy for affected students to get into a lazy mode, where they sit around doing nothing or just meshing the entire time into one long continual nap fest… wasting valuable time and making no positive strides in their life all through the period of the strike.

B. LEARN A NEW SKILL

You finally have the time to learn a new skill. It could be photography, jewelry making, learning to play an instrument like the saxophone or guitar, baking, writing and producing music or playing a sport like football, tennis or volleyball. Take the time to learn it and get really good at it. Not only does it give you an edge and provide opportunities for a side hustle, it will help build your self-confidence and give you value for time invested.

C. ENROLL FOR A PROFESSIONAL CERTIFICATION COURSE

The university might be closed but there are other avenues for learning. You can enroll in short courses online or for professional classes that will grant you certain qualifications that may become relevant in future. Even if you do not have the money to pay for these courses, you can go for free ones on portals like Coursera or Edx. You don’t necessarily have to get a certificate; the idea is to acquire new knowledge that will be relevant to your career goals or aspirations.

D. GET A JOB

While you are at home, you might as well make a little money. Get a job as an intern or assistant in an office or company. You can even get a job as a paid apprentice at a salon or creative studio. Even more, you may decide to go for something freelance like writing or blogging.

The beauty of the internet is that you can get connected to so many job opportunities without necessarily breaking a sweat. The money made may not be the kind that will set you up for life, but it may be enough for extra chills…and then again, working would be fun and educational. You learn the value of time and money and attain the essence of work ethic and work culture.

E. VOLUNTEER

Volunteering is a great way to give back to the society or just do some good with your time. You can volunteer at NGOs or religious organizations, where the aim is to help others and.....

Following the outcome of the referendum meeting held! Sunday afternoon in Abuja by the union leaders, the Academic staff Union of Universities has declared an indefinite strike from Monday 14th August 2017.

This the Union leader says is to persuade the Federal government to meet their demands. This came after several branches of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) have voted overwhelmingly for members in both federal and state universities to embark on an indefinite strike to press home the implementation of their demands.

ASUU branches nationwide on Friday held a referendum in line with an earlier directive by the National Executive Council (NEC) to vote whether the strike will be indefinite strike, one month strike, one week warning and no strike.

The meeting of ASUU NEC was held on Sunday 13th August at the union’s secretariat at Abuja to deliberate on the outcome of the referendum conducted by the branches. Feelers from the NEC meeting indicate that several of the branches including the University of Lagos (UNILAG), University of Ibadan (UI) and Lagos State University (LASU) voted for an indefinite industrial action. One of ASUU Zonal Coordinators told our Correspondent that his zone voted overwhelmingly for strike and that the outcome of the referendum conducted on Friday will be collated to enable the union take a position.

Among issues in contention includes, federal government breach of the 2009 FG/ASUU Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed agreement on financing grant to state universities, conditions of service, non implementation of Earned Academic Allowance (EAA) and re -negotiation of the agreement.

Other outstanding issues are non provision of revitalization funds to public universities, non release of NUPEMCO operational licence, payment of half salaries to members and government owing universities outstanding N880 billion in intervention fund.

PRESS STATEMENT - Earlier yesterday Sunday 6th August, unknown gunmen invaded the early morning Mass at St Phillips Catholic Church Amakwa Ozubulu in Ekwusigo Local Government and shot several worshippers to early deaths killing 11 and injuring about 25 persons.

Speaking to Colossus Gists, the Parish Priest of the Church, Reverend Father Jude Onwuaso who revealed that the incident took place at about 6.30am during a holy mass, said he saw an unidentified man wielding arms come into the church and started shooting sporadically, confirming that at least 11 parishioners died on the spot while about 25 injured persons have been taken to the hospital.

On hearing the sad development, Governor Obiano stormed the scene to ascertain the level of damage and sympathize with the people. The Governor was briefed by Security agencies and preliminary observations indicate that a family feud apparently degenerated to gangland style killing totally alien to the values of our people. There are also no known sectarian, economic and political undertones in the very unfortunate incident at Ozubulu today.

Governor Willie Obiano who was briefed by the Parish Priest and the State Commissioner of Police, Mr Garba Umar on arrival at the Church described the killings as barbaric and totally unacceptable but debunked insinuations of possible invasion of any kind.

The Governor who was speaking when he made an emergency visit to the scene of the shooting earlier today also said that the state government will support the security agencies in their ongoing investigations to identify and prosecute the perpetrator.

Shooting caused by Feud between Brothers living Outside Nigeria
Speaking at the Church premises, the governor revealed that preliminary security investigations show that the shooting was caused by a feud between two brothers from the community living outside Nigeria

"This is sacrilegious, totally unacceptable in Anambra State." - Gov Obiano

The deeply saddened governor asked the people to go about their businesses without fear or panic noting that this isolated case must be followed to the root and all perpetrators must be brought to book.

"We can't allow this happen in Anambra, we must get everyone involved to face the music" the governor declared

The Governor called on worshipers across the state not to panic but to go about their normal activities, assuring that his government is on top of the situation.

The Anambra Government has signed an agreement with two companies, to build an ultra-modern market costing N43 billion at Isiagu Community, near Awka.

The companies handling the project are JC Michaels Nigeria Ltd. and a Chinese firm, Centurion Oil Incorporated.

At a ceremony to sign the agreement on Wednesday in Awka, Gov. Willie Obiano said that the market would house 10, 000 shops.

He said that the market would also contain showrooms, warehouses, shoppers’ car park, police and fire service stations, food court, school, banks, clinic and toilets, among others.

Obiano said that the project, which would be funded by the Chinese firm, would be executed in three-phases within three years.

The governor said that his administration had so far attracted a total of 520 million dollars worth of investments to the state.

He said the aim of the project was to gradually disengage future administrations from total dependence on federal allocations to undertake their ventures.

Earlier, Igwe Cyril Enweze, the traditional ruler of Umuoji Community and Chairman of the state’s Investment Promotion and Protection Agency, told the companies to mobilise to site.

“The State Government has agreed to provide a special purpose vehicle for the project and the certificate of occupancy, if work commences on the site within the next six months.

Anambra State Government will not relent in its effort to continue positioning the state as a model state in agriculture, while establishing it firmly at the top of agricultural production in Nigeria.

This remark was made by Governor Willie Obiano during the launching of the 2017 farming season with the theme, ‘Increasing agricultural productivity through community participation’ at Alex Ekwueme Square, Awka, Anambra State.

Gov Obiano said the theme of the 2017 farming season gives a clear idea of his administration strategic approach to agricultural production in the state.

“I am proud to announce that we are determined to do better than we did in the last planting season. Our resolve to surpass our last performance has been busted by the growing interested in farming across the state.”

Citing increased involvement of youths in farming, Gov Obiano said, “in our dear state for instance, I am proud to note that youth are joining the agricultural sector. Our farmers information management system confirms that out of over 160,000 farmers registered in our data base, 24% of them are youths below the age of 40 years”.

“A review of our performance last year, since we made agriculture our number one economic pillar by my administration, we have continued to push for a significant improvement in our performance every year”.

The governor expressed the need for farmers to be more ambitious this farming season while stating that the sum of about N500,000,000 have been earmarked as a special intervention fund for agro entrepreneurs and operators in the state.

In what he coined the ‘four baby crops’, Gov Obiano outlined the performance in the production of Rice, Maize, Cassava and Vegetable in the outgoing farming season.

“In the past 3 years, Anambra state has become widely known for producing rice. This is because of the priority attention my administration has given to rice production. If I will remind you, in 2014 when we took over, the whole of Anambra was producing 80,000 metric tons of rice. Today, we are doing 320,000 metric tons. This is 20,000 metric tons, more than we are consuming”.


“The consumption estimate of rice for everybody living in Anambra is 320,000 metric tons. Today, from 80,000 metric tons since 2014 we are doing well over 320,000 metric tons and we have a target for 2017. Consequently, we are projecting a yield of 513,000 - 519,000 metric tons in 2017”.

"To achieve this projection, we hope to increase the size of land use in rice cultivation, from 54,274 hectares to 57,650 hectares in 2017".

"Similarly, we have planned to grow more yield in cassava from 1,792,596 metric tons recorded in 2016 to 2,151,123 metric tons in 2017".
