A naked statue of Donald Trump, complete with a distended belly and jowly sneer, is to go on display at a Haunted Museum after a paranormal investigator bought it at auction.

Trump Julien’s Auctions announced Wednesday it sold the artwork — believed to be the last of the controversial statues not vandalized or destroyed — for $28,000 (23,000 euros) at its biannual auction in Los Angeles.

The infamous statue by a West Coast anarchist collective is one of a series depicting the 45th president in the nude, but without testicles. In August 2016 — during Trump’s then improbable bid for the White House — the statues appeared in public spaces in Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York, Seattle and Cleveland, garnering international attention.

The four other naked Trumps — titled “The Emperor Has No Balls” were confiscated or destroyed. In one cheeky response, New York officials pointed to regulations banning “any unpermitted erection in city parks, no matter how small.”

The sole surviving copy was rescued by La Luz de Jesus Gallery on Hollywood Boulevard before it could be taken and melted down. Buyer Zak Bagans — a paranormal investigator and American television personality — intends to put the fleshy Trump on show at his Haunted Museum in Las Vegas, according to a statement from Julien’s.

Up to 70 per cent of codeine cough syrup produced and imported in Nigeria end up in the hands of Boko Haram insurgents, Senate Leader, Ahmed Lawan, said on Wednesday.

With the rate of use of the drug, almost every family in Nigeria has an addict, he added.

Mr Lawan coming under order 43 of the Senate standing order was reacting to the ban on the production and importation of the cough syrup.

The Federal Government on May 1 ordered immediate ban on issuance of permits for the importation of codeine as active pharmaceutical ingredient for cough preparation.

The Minister of Health, Isaac Adewole, who gave the directive said the move became necessary due to the gross abuse of Codeine in the country.

Raising his point of order on Wednesday, Mr Lawan said the development came after a collaborative effort of the Executive and Legislature.

“You will recall in October last year, this Senate debated and took resolutions on a motion specifically dealing with the abuse of drugs of particularly of codeine syrup in Northern Nigeria and Nigeria at large.

“The report at that debate was that between Jigawa and Kano states over three million bottles of codeine are consumed on a daily basis.
He tasked law enforcement agencies to ensure the drugs already procured by pharmacies be taken off counters.

He also prayed the Senate join the United Nations in celebrating June 26 as day set aside to raise awareness on drug abuse.

“I also feel that we don’t relent on this and go ahead to celebrate the anniversary that has been declared by the United Nations on drug abuse on June 26 every year. This drug addiction is what is killing us,” he said.

Mr Lawan said a bulk of the drugs end up in Sambisa Forest, the fortress of insurgency group, Boko Haram.

“The information I got this morning is that 70 percent of this codeine that comes into Nigeria finds its way into Sambisa forest and what that tells us is that we have Boko haram elements who are using this, we have others addicts who are using this. We may even have some of our security agencies who are under the influence of drugs. Therefore we need to do everything possible to support the Executive on this to minimize, even if we can’t eliminate completely this scourge.”

The Senate tasked its committee on health to look into Mr Lawan’s prayers.

President Muhammadu Buhari, Vice President Yemi Osibanjo, governors and ministers are to inaugurate multi-billion naira projects in Zamfara State as part of the 7th Anniversary of Governor Abdul’aziz Yari’s administration.

Chairman of the anniversary committee, Alhaji Lawal Liman, disclosed this at a press conference, in Gusau, on Wednesday.

Liman, who is the state Commissioner for Health, said about 109 projects comprising hospitals, roads, schools were expected to be inaugurated during the ceremonies.

“Even though the date for the president’s visit is not officially announced , but it would be made available to the public later.

“The Vice president is to start with the inauguration of the 61km Dauran-BirninMagaji-Kaura-Namoda road, township roads and semi urban water projects in Bakura and Zurmi local government areas this month.

“While, the schedules of president’s visit would be communicated later.

“We also have water, roads and electrification projects executed by the state governments at the new army brigade, Gusau,” he said
According to him,

“Other important personalities to visit the state during the ceremonies comprised Minister of Works, Power and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, governors of Sokoto, Ebonyi, Adamawa, Katsina and Kano states.

“Others would be Sultan of Sokoto, former governors of the state, National Assembly members, religious and community leaders in the country, among others.”

He recalled that Bayelsa participated fully in last year’s OTC which updated their knowledge in the oil and gas sector and helped them to take more far reaching policy decisions and embarked on more critical projects in the sector to effectively market the state to potential investors. Dickson said his government has created the enabling environment for investments, including investments in the oil and gas sector to thrive in Bayelsa State as well as guarantee a high return on all investments.

He averred that the state is safe and peaceful for investments and called on potential investors to make the littoral state their choice destination.

He said Bayelsa State has over 30% of the of the gas reserve in Nigeria, stressing that for anyone thinking about investment opportunities in gas, ‘‘where to go is clearly Bayelsa and there is no doubt about that, which is why we are here to market that comparative advantage to the investing world.’’

He said: ‘‘ Bayelsa State is safe, peaceful and ready for business. So all that is needed for the investors to do is to site their plant, connect to the feed stock and commence operations.

‘‘In addition to this, the Industrial Park should have housing facilities to accommodate all who will work in the industrial park because these equipments however hi-tech they are, require people to man them. In addition to that, the Industrial park will have schools, gaming facilities and various entertainment facilities that it requires. And there will also be a need for an airport because not everything comes through the water way or the road. And of course, to have an airport, it must be done to the extent that it can host heavy lift aircrafts as well as wide bodied huge aircrafts.

‘‘Bayelsa State has been developing its airport which meets these standards and impressively, it is almost reaching completion. I was impressed about the presentation at the Bayelsa State exhibition stand because they did not only take on the project but demonstrated that they are almost done with a 3.5Km runway airport that can land a 747, an A380 and of course it can land the heaviest lift aircraft that we have in the world. ‘’

The NNPC GMD was also impressed that Bayelsa State investments will shore up the political economy of the state adding that the Bayelsa heavy lift airport will be useful even to the neighbouring states of Rivers, Delta, Edo, and Akwa-Ibom states and in deed the entire country.

On the Deep Sea Port, he also commended Bayelsa State for being the only state in Nigeria that has 14metre draft and is underway to be deepened to 20metre.

He believes after completion of the Deep Sea Port, there will be a lot of movement of goods, facilities and heavy equipment vessels away from Lagos Port to the Bayelsa Port which he reasoned will be a great relief for the various industries ‘‘because it will ensure that heavy goods are brought closer to the locations of use and of course, it will be cheaper and good for all.’’

The Police Command in Lagos State has arrested a 48-year-old man suspected to be the operator of a fake West Africa Examination Council examination centre in Igbogbo, Ikorodu.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Edgal Imohimi, said the suspects were arrested on April 25 following a complaint by a senior member of staff of WAEC office, Ogba.

“The complaint said there is a fake WAEC centre at El-Supreme Private School located at No. 3, Oseni Adekogbe Street, Igbogbo Ikorodu.
“Operatives of the Command attached to Area ‘G’ Ogba, were mobilized to the above address where one Pastor Adeniyi Joshua of El-Supreme Church was arrested.

“WAEC question papers and answer sheets suspected to be forged were recovered from the suspect,” Imohimi said.

Indigenous Telecommunication Company Globacom, has kicked-off the construction of a multi-billion-naira optic fibre submarine cable which is expected to boost telecom services in Nigeria and West Africa, in its bid to consolidate its position as the leading company in the Nigerian telecommunication industry.

The new project, named Glo 2, was announced during the formal contract-signing ceremony between Globacom and its partner, Huawei, a leading global information and communications technology (ICT) solutions provider held in Lagos

Speaking at the event, Mr. Sanjib Roy, Globacom’s regional director, Technical, said the submarine cable would be built from Glo 1 landing station, Alpha Beach in Lagos and will run along the coast to the Southern part of Nigeria, adding that it will provide capacity to offshore oil platforms and the communities as well as facilitate ultra-high capacity connection to South-South Region and provide capacity to offshore oil platforms and the communities.

“Glo2 will be the first submarine cable in Nigeria to land outside Lagos as the five existing submarine cables only landed in Lagos. Glo 2 will have capacity of 12Terabit per second and will provide ultra-high speed connection to oil platforms and communities to empower data coverage and support Enterprise market growth in this part of Nigeria,” Mr. Roy explained.

The Glo Technical Chief explained that the Glo 2 project would provide high speed internet connectivity, thus supporting the oil platforms to improve productivity, upload data to remote oil platforms at the speed of light. In addition, it will also provide economic as well as social empowerment of the communities in oil producing regions through unique telecommunication service delivery.

“Glo2 will be the first submarine cable in Nigeria to land outside Lagos as the five existing submarine cables only landed in Lagos.

Glo 2 will have capacity of 12Terabit per second and will provide ultra-high speed connection to oil platforms and communities to empower data coverage and support Enterprise market growth in this part of Nigeria,” Mr Roy explained.

According to him, Glo 2 is coming on board to support the growth of Nigerian Economy and allow Oil Communities reduce their operational expenditure by providing the first submarine optical fiber dedicated to oil platforms. “It is also designed for further expansion southwards to Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Angola, among others,” he added.

Mr. Roy also stated that Glo 2 would facilitate high capacity connections between oil companies’ offices onshore and their offshore locations. “The New submarine cable will be approximately 850 kilometres long and will be named Glo2.

The cable will be integrated to Globacom’s existing terrestrial Backbone Network to provide additional service redundancy”, especially Abuja and other parts of the country.

He stated further that the cable would be divided into three pairs, with the first pair connecting Lagos directly to Southern part of Nigeria while for redundancy and maintenance purposes it will also be connected to other parts of the country.

The second pair will deliver high capacity to offshore oil stations and communities connected directly to Bus and will be equipped with eight switchable Branching Units. The third pair will deliver high capacity to Cameroon and Equatorial Guinea and will be equipped with two (2) switchable Branching Units.

Glo2 will support the Glo 1 international submarine cable built by Globacom in 2010.Glo 1 managed exclusively, from Lagos to London, by one Company currently provides sufficient bandwidth for the West Africa sub-region. It is the only international submarine cable in Nigeria.

In what is being referred to as a “groundbreaking lawsuit”, United Kingdom financial guru Martin Lewis is taking aim at Facebook’s lack of vigilance with regard to fake accounts. Mr. Lewis claims his likeness and reputation were used in multiple fraudulent instances, peddling mostly investment advice for assets such as bitcoin.

“I will issue High Court proceedings against Facebook,” the popular UK financial advisor posted in lieu of his regular column, “to try and stop all the disgusting repeated fake adverts from scammers it refuses to stop publishing with my picture, name and reputation.”

Mr. Lewis is proprietor of a consumer finance site and host of Independent Television’s (ITV) The Martin Lewis Money Show. “Within the last year,” a press release reads, Facebook “has published over 50 fake Martin Lewis adverts, which are regularly seen, likely by millions of people, in the UK. These adverts are often for scams. Many have big pictures of Martin and his name, alongside a raft of false promises or endorsements – some then link on to fake articles which continue the theme.”....

Increasingly, Facebook has come under fire for its privacy policies, including having to defend itself in front of the United States Senate and House of Representatives. The social network seems to understand there is a problem with crypto-related ads, taking action earlier this year, insisting “ads must not promote financial products and services that are frequently associated with misleading or deceptive promotional practices, such as binary options, initial coin offerings, or cryptocurrency.” Evidently their latest moves have yet to produce results.

As a result, Mr. Lewis will “issue High Court proceedings for a campaigning defamation lawsuit against Facebook and will be seeking exemplary damages. This is not being done for personal gain – he pledges any and all money paid out to him will be donated to anti-scam charities.”

Four members of Boko Haram have surrendered to Troops waging war against Boko Haram in Borno state.

According to The Cable, this was made known to newsmen by Onyema Nwachukwu, the Deputy Director Public Relations of the Theatre Command.

He said “The terrorists who claimed they are from the Abubakar Shekau faction comprised 3 men, one woman and 3 children.

“Two of the men were Boko Haram Amirs (commanders) while the third man was a Boko Haram medic, who provided medical treatments to wounded insurgents in the field

“The only woman among them is a wife to one of the Amirs and held a position as one of the women leaders amongst the female terrorists, while the children, comprising two girls and a boy are offsprings of the surrendered terrorists.”

Nwachukwu also revealed that they have been transferred to the operation Lafiya Dole Headquarters in Borno state.

Troops repel Boko Haram attack in Gamboru

The Nigerian Army on Saturday said its troops successfully repelled an attack by Boko Haram insurgents at Gamboru-Ngala in Borno.

According to Brig.-Gen. Texas Chukwu, the Director, Army Public Relations, one terrorist was killed while several others fled.

The army spokesman also called on the people to co-operate with troops, provide useful and timely information to security agencies.

Many Nigerian representatives were absent at an investment programme organised by the Nigerian embassy in Washington DC on Saturday. The government officials, who were supposed to have sessions at the event, were conspicuously absent, raising worries that Nigeria might lose investment opportunities by their absence.

Daily Trust reports that officials who were billed to have sessions at the programme but were absent include the Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo; the Minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun; Minister of State for Petroleum, Ibe Kwachukwu; Minister of Agriculture, Audu Ogbeh; Minister of Science and Technology, Ogbonnaya Onu; Minister of Information, Lai Mohammed; Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Kayode Fayemi; and the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Okechukwu Enelamah,

Speaking to journalists at the programme on Saturday, the Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido, expressed displeasure at the absence of government officials at the meeting.


He said,

“For the person sitting in London and who has a billion dollars to invest, he’s got Nigeria, he’s got Ghana, he’s got Rwanda, Kenya, South Africa. You may be the biggest economy, but he may decide that rather than go through the hassle of investing $500 million in nigeria, why not put $100 million in Ghana, $100 million in Rwanda, $100 million in Cote d’Ivore, just to have diversification benefit and the benefit of reaching out.

Mr Sanusi, a former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, said the ministers’ absence was not good for Nigeria’s efforts to attract investment opportunities into the country.

The emir said:

“You invite top investors, your ministers are in Washington and they do not come to talk to the investors about Nigeria. That is not how you attract investors. If you have this forum in the Rwandan embassy, I assure you President Kagame himself would be there telling people to come to Rwanda.

“Sometimes it is about how we market ourselves, how we package ourselves. There is absolutely no reason for the Nigerian embassy to arrange a Nigeria is open for Business forum with ministers in town, with governors in town and not have the coordination that they are actually here to meet with these investors.

“There is no reason why we should start one hour late, and there is no reason why the public address system should not work. Because at the end of the day, this is the first point of the country, he hasn’t even come to Nigeria so what will be his experience in Abuja and he is saying if I am having this experience in Washington, what will happen when I go to Abuja, when I go to Kano, how do I get to see the governor will it take me 10 hours?”

Daily Trust reports that the Minister of Transport, Rotimi Ameachi, whose name did not appear on the itinerary, appeared briefly at the meeting but disappeared after a few minutes.

The National Assembly had set April 24 for the passage of the national budget.

The planned passage of the 2018 Appropriation Bill on Tuesday by the National Assembly is now uncertain, SUNDAY PUNCH learnt on Saturday.

Ahead of the date, the joint Committees on Appropriations of the Senate and the House of Representatives were expected to present the report on the budget in the two chambers on April 19 (Wednesday last week).

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Yakubu Dogara, had, on March 21, 2018, said, “The consideration and passage of the budget will be on April 24. The committees will submit their report on April 19. This will be a harmonised report.”

The N8.612tn budget has been held up at the National Assembly since November 7, 2017, when President Muhammadu Buhari presented the estimates to a joint session of the Senate and the House.

However, the National Assembly and the executive have engaged each other in a blame game for the past few months over the delay in passing the budget.

At the Senate, the Committee on Appropriations is still compiling and harmonising reports by the standing committees (sub-committees) on the budgets of ministries, departments and agencies they supervise.

President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki, had, penultimate Wednesday, said the Committee on Appropriations should present its report for consideration and passage by the chamber this week.

The Chairman and Vice-Chairman of the committee, Senator Danjuma Goje and Senator Sunday Ogbuoji, respectively, could not be reached on the pace of work on the budget on Saturday.

The Vice-Chairman of the Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Senator Ben Murray-Bruce, also expressed uncertainty over the Tuesday’s target.

Asked of the feasibility of passing the budget on Tuesday, he said, “I don’t know. All I know is that the Appropriations Committee is meeting, everybody is meeting. My committee, Works, met on Wednesday. We have concluded with ours and it has been transmitted to Appropriations. A lot of committees have transmitted to Appropriations.

“We may or may not meet the deadline, but we are working very hard to make sure that we get it done as quickly as possible.”

The Majority Leader, Senator Ahmad Lawan, also said work was ongoing on the bill.

“It is our desire to pass it then (on Tuesday) and I don’t want to start thinking that it may not be passed. We are still communicating and working on it,” he added.

When asked why the committee did not present its report last week, Ogbuoji stated, “We are working.” When asked when the report would be presented, he said, “When we are ready.”

Saraki had, on April 10, said the Committee on Appropriations was expected to present a harmonised report on the 2018 Appropriation Bill last week, but the report had yet been presented.

Again on April 12, Saraki insisted on the April 14 deadline issued to standing committees to represent their reports to the Committee on Appropriations.

Saraki said the deadline would not be extended, noting that the Senate would not be held to ransom by the 20 sub-committees who had yet to present their reports to the Committee on Appropriations.

Mace-snatching won’t stop budget passage –Reps

Meanwhile, the House of Representatives has said the mace-snatching incident at the Senate has no connection with the 2018 budget.

It noted that the attack on the Senate by thugs last week was an isolated incident, which did not stop the National Assembly from carrying out its legislative duties.

The House said the budget would be passed before the end of April as already announced by the legislature.

The Leader of the House, Mr. Femi Gbajabiamila, explained, “The budget will be passed. The incident has nothing to do with the budget.”

In a related development, a group, under the aegis of Companion of Buhari Initiative, on Saturday, condemned the National Assembly for the delay in the passage of the 2018 budget.

The group described the delay as a ploy to inflict hardship on Nigerians because some government policies would not be implemented without the budget.

In a communiqué at the end of its general meeting in Calabar, Cross River State, signed by the General Coordinator and Secretary-General, Chief Utum Eteng and Dr. Adalikwu Adie, respectively, the group also condemned the leadership of the National Assembly for victimising those perceived to be in support of Buhari.

The communiqué read in part, “We condemn the undue delay by the National Assembly in passing the 2018 budget submitted by the President since November 2017. We see the delay as a ploy to inflict hardship on the people in view of the fact that some government policies cannot be implemented without the budget.

“We also condemn the recent tactics by the leadership of the National Assembly in banning Parliamentary Support Group and suspending members of the National Assembly perceived to be loyal to Mr. President.

“We describe it as a ploy to intimidate other members of the Senate who support the non-veto of the Electoral Act (amendment) seeking to re-order the sequence of elections in the country.”

While throwing its weight behind the second-term bid of the President, the group said it was pleased with the recent appointment of Mr. Festus Keyamo (SAN), as the spokesperson for the Buhari Campaign Organisation for the 2019 presidential election.

President Muhammadu Buhari has said that many Nigerian youths just want to sit down and do nothing, banking on the notion that Nigerian is an oil-rich nation.

Speaking at the Commonwealth Business Forum in Westminster on Wednesday, the president said a lot of Nigerian youths have not been to school and they want everything free.

“About the economy, we have a very young population, our population is estimated conservatively to be 180 million. This is a very conservative one,” Buhari said.

“More than 60 percent of the population is below 30, a lot of them haven’t been to school and they are claiming that Nigeria is an oil producing country, therefore, they should sit and do nothing, and get housing, healthcare, education free.”

The president said he has done well on the three cardinal points of his campaign, including economy and security.

“Recently, my minister for information was constrained to answer a question on people accusing this administration of doing nothing, he said ‘let Nigerians be reminded what position we were before May 2015, what condition we are now, and what we have achieved between then and now and I think people were impressed with the answer.

“For security, we have done quite well. Economy, we are doing very well, especially with agriculture; we are providing soft loans, and guarantee is that you have to belong to a certain locality and you have got land, you don’t have to go to the bank and need a physical collateral. I think a lot is being done.”

The president is expected to meet with business leaders and other heads of state as the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting progress through the week.

A new report in the Wall Street Journal details HTS' rise as it consolidates power in northwest Syria. Led by a former Al-Qaeda militant, HTS is mostly based in Syria's Idlib Governorate and has taken advantage of the US-led coalition's focus on ISIS in the East, as well as the Syrian government and Russia's focus on other parts of the country.

HTS came into existence roughly a year ago, when Jabhat Fath al Sham, previously known as the Al Nusrah Front and Al-Qaeda's branch in Syria until its re-branding in July of 2016, announced a merger with four other islamist groups operating in Syria.

Combined with the other groups, HTS — or the Assembly for Liberation of the Levant — was created.

The reason for its existence, according to its propaganda, is "to unite our banners and to preserve the fruits and the jihad" of the revolution against Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad, so that it can "be the seed of unifying the capacities and strength of this revolution."

The group's leader, Abu Mohammad al-Julani, has said that he wants his followers to engage in "a war of ideas, a war of minds, a war of wills, a war of perseverance," according to the Wall Street Journal, and that he will conquer Damascus — Syria's capital — and implement Sharia law.

Thr group announced in February that it had defeated the remnants of ISIS militants in Idlib, and a month later said that they had taken control of up to 25 villages in Aleppo and Idlib provinces.

It has created a religious police force in its territory, similar to ISIS' Hisbah. They enforce Sharia law, control services like electricity and water, and collect taxes from citizens.

The group has also been fighting forces from the Syrian government in Homs, Hama, and Aleppo. But while the terror group continues to grow and solidify its control, the Syrian government and US-led coalition have their attention elsewhere.

"The area seems to be out of focus for Western powers," Hassan Hassan, an analyst with the Tahrir Institute for Middle East Policy, told the Wall Street Journal. "The jihadis are having a honeymoon there."

A one time former US First Lady, Barbara Bush, is dead. She died at the age of 92. Her death was confirmed by her son, George, in a statement.

Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, who was accused of hiring thugs to steal the mace in the Senate, has denied involvement in the theft. Some persons had invaded the Senate Chamber on Wednesday, April 18, and made away with the mace, the parliament's symbol of authority.

Following the incident, the Red Chamber accused Omo-Agege, who had been suspended, of masterminding the heist.

Consequently, the accused Senator was arrested by the FCT Police Command.

"We are aware of several media reports suggesting that Senator Omo-Agege personally removed or encouraged anyone to remove the Mace of the Senate. This weighty allegation is not true at all", the statement said.

"Following the said media reports on the Mace issue, the Police authorities decided to hear from Senator Omo-Agege. He has told the Police his perspective to help them carry out a proper investigation. He has since left the Police. Senator Omo-Agege trusts them to thoroughly investigate this very serious matter"

The Senator also described the statement by the Senate Spokesperson, Senator Abdullahi Sabi accusing him of leading the hoodlums to cart away the mace a 'very serious' allegation.

"We are carefully studying Senator Sabi’s allegations to ascertain their full ramifications. Appropriate responses will follow, as may be necessary," the statement added.

However, the police are said to have arrested five persons in connection with the mace theft. All the suspects are reportedly from Delta state, where Omo-Agege hails from.

Manchester United gave the perfect response to Jose Mourinho’s withering criticism as they got back on track with a 2-0 win against Bournemouth on Wednesday.

Goals from Chris Smalling and Romelu Lukaku sealed the points at Dean Court after Mourinho made seven changes in the aftermath of United’s shock defeat to struggling West Bromwich Albion on Sunday.

Mourinho’s hardline stance appeared to sting his players into action as Smalling opened the scoring in the first half.

Lukaku came off the bench to seal the points in the closing stages as United consolidated second place in the Premier League.

Mourinho’s side are 14 points clear of fifth placed Chelsea and will be guaranteed to qualify for the Champions League if the Blues fail to beat Burnley on Thursday.

So when she became pregnant, she dismissed the signs.

Hundreds of angry demonstrators on Wednesday laid the corpses of at least nine people killed in recent clashes in Central African Republic’s capital Bangui in front of the headquarters of the UN’s mission, a Reuters witness said.

The UN Multidimensional Integrated Stabilisation Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA), said late on Tuesday that one Rwandan UN soldier was killed.

The mission said eight others were wounded in clashes with armed groups in the PK5 neighbourhood, a Muslim area of the majority Christian city.

Our source reports that on Tuesday, a source said peacekeepers from the UN mission along with Central African troops have since Sunday been carrying out a “disarmament and arrest” operation against armed groups in Bangui.

At least 46 people have been injured in fierce armed clashes in the enclave, according to aid group Medecins

The security source told AFP the peacekeeper was killed when a Minusca patrol was ambushed by rebel gunmen on the outskirts of the PK5 neighbourhood on Tuesday afternoon.

On April 1, UN peacekeepers exchanged fire with members of an armed group in PK5, the first attack on troops since violence resumed in the neighbourhood in 2017.

On Sunday, gunfire was exchanged after UN troops were targeted near the president’s residence in Bangui, just hours after UN and Central African forces launched the joint operation targeting armed groups in PK5.

At least two people were killed and dozens wounded during the “disarmament and arrest” operation on Sunday, according to UN and medical sources.

Minusca spokesperson Herve Verhoosel said 11 peacekeepers, mostly Egyptian, were among the injured.

MINUSCA said the joint force raided the bases of several groups, resulting in the seizure of arms, ammunition, and drugs.

Eight people belonging to the armed groups Force and 50/50 were detained, Verhoosel told AFP.

PK5’s population was previously supportive of the armed groups, which came from a desire to protect their neighbourhoods in the country’s civil war, recently they have been accused of intimidation and of extorting protection money, and Minusca considers them criminal.

Minusca said it would dismantle all the armed groups’ bases unless they hand over their weapons, but the groups’ leaders refused, despite a mediation organized by community leaders.

“This joint operation will continue until the criminal groups of PK5 are dismantled or otherwise disappear,” Minusca said.
Although rich in diamonds, gold, oil and uranium, the former French colony has one of the world’s poorest populations, and has been blighted by violence and instability since gaining independence in 1960.

In March 2013, Séléka, a mainly Muslim alliance, overthrew CAR’s leader Francois Bozizé, which led to a spiral of violence between Muslim and Christian militias in which thousands died.
