PRESS BRIEFING BY THE RIVERS STATE COMMISSIONER OF POLICE, CP JOSEPH G. MUKAN psc (+) ON THE ATTACK ON POLICE STATIONS AND ARREST OF THE PERPETRATORS OF THE DASTARDLY ACTS.
Good afternoon Gentlemen of the Press.
It is with a heavy heart that I address you this afternoon on the recent attack on private and public property in the State leading to loss of lives.
2. Recall that on the 21/10/2020 at about 2130hrs hoodlums suspected to be members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) under the guise of #ENDSARS PROTESTS, invaded Oyigbo Local Government Area where they launched senseless and mindless attacks on the Area Command, Oyigbo and Afam Police Stations and burnt down the three Stations. They also went to the adjoining Eberi-Omuma LGA where they attacked the Umuebulu Police Station. In all the attacks, several vehicles were burnt and three Policemen were hacked to death and burnt to ashes.
3. In another attack at the Mile one Police Station the same day, the rampaging IPOB Members still acting under the guise of #ENDSARS PROTESTS made frantic attempts at burning the Station but were however repelled by the superior fire power of the Police where four of them were fatally wounded and 8 of them arrested immediately.
4. In the course of investigation, on Saturday 24/10/2020 I led Commanders of the Sister Security Agencies to the scenes where we had an on-the spot assessment of the damage done to lives and property.
Consequently, deployments were made to forestall further breakdown of Law and order. And as we speak there is relative peace in the Oyigbo Local Government Area, as we will continue to closely monitor the area amidst the Curfew imposed by the State Government.

F/No. 424944 Sgt. Umunna Uchechukwu---- serving in Afam Police Station, his leg and hand were cut off and burnt to ashes.
Gentlemen of the Press once again let me sincerely thank you for your prompt response and wish to enjoin you to continue to partner with us in our avowed commitment to rid the State of all manner of crime and criminality. I promise to sustain the existing peace in the State and appeal for support and cooperation from the public.
Let me also sound it loud and clear that those who find pleasure in destroying private and public property to have a rethink or else someday the law will catch up with them. No offender will be left unpunished.

#END SARS PROTESTS.
RIVERS YOUTHS PROTESTED TO THE POLICE HEADQUARTERS, SEEKING GOVERNMENTS’ IMMEDIATE INTERVENTION ON THEIR DEMANDS.


The Commissioner of Police, CP Joseph G. Mukan psc (+) today 20/10/2020 at separate times addressed two Youth bodies from the State numbering over 15,000 that protested to the Headquarters.
The Demands presented to CP include:-
The immediate disbandment of SARS.
Justice for all deceased victims of Police brutality and appropriate compensation for their families.
Setting up of an independent body to oversee the investigation and prosecution of all reports of Police misconduct.
Psychological evaluation and re-training (to be confirmed by an independent body) of all disbanded SARS Officers before they can be redeployed.
Increase Police salary so that they are adequately compensated for protecting the lives and property of citizens.
2. Making the presentation on behalf of the concerned Youths of Rivers State, the spokesperson among other things, noted that some enemies of their tomorrow had sponsored some bandits and thugs to attack them which had led to loss of lives and property for which they were accusing SARS. He accordingly appealed to the Youths to leave the Streets and allow the Governments at various levels to address their genuine concerns, while appealing to the Governments to set up processes and take practical steps to address their demands.
3. Responding, the CP thanked and commended them for their peaceful disposition, noting that Protest was their fundamental Rights, especially when organized in a civilized and decent manner. He assured them of Police protection at all times and warned against allowing unscrupulous persons to infiltrate their ranks and cause mayhem.

The CP lastly promised to deliver their respective demands to the appropriate quarters for necessary action.

The two separate Protests were all the same peaceful and the Youths have all gone home peaceably, as the security situation is under close watch.

Exactly my thought. Our police are poorly paid while senators and house of Rep members earn about 30million a month.
