Social drugs, recreational drugs, they are still drugs. Ecstasy, hallucinogenic mushrooms and LSD are said to be recreational drugs but they can and do cause flashbacks and bad trips. A person with a bad trip can commit unbelievable crimes while tripping.
same as chloroquin, paracetamol, piriton, etc. anyone using those without medical advice is a drug user. . . . .continuous use and the person is a drug addict. nearly all medicine is toxic with potential lethal effects.

Not as rampant as when it was made cool and an aspiration.
lord of mercy. . . . .

So you admit it is not a "need"? It is a carefree attitude in societies where people are well informed?
it's a bit of both. . . . sometimes they need to for the required level of performance and sometimes they just need it to step down.

I really don't see how you can compare addictiveness of alcohol or food with crack?
death is the outcome for all of them. . . .besides, more money has been spent treating diseases related to food & alcohol than rehabilitating drug users.

You give such simple arguments without any thought.
Let me give you an analogy.

A punch is painful. But believe me, it is different when you get a punch in the face from Halle Berry and if you get one in the face from Vladimir Klitschko. I will advise not to take too much from the latter.
sagamite. . . .death is death! we see hard drugs as demonic because of the way the media has made it to be. marijuana is a recreational drug. . . firstly, the record on marijuana encompasses 5,000 years of human experience. secondly, marijuana is now used daily by enormous numbers of people throughout the world. estimates suggest that from twenty million to fifty million Americans routinely, albeit illegally, smoke marijuana without the benefit of direct medical supervision. yet, despite this long history of use and the extraordinarily high numbers of social smokers, there are simply no credible medical reports to suggest that consuming marijuana has caused a single death. . .

by contrast aspirin, a commonly used, over-the-counter medicine, causes hundreds of deaths each year. the most obvious concern when dealing with drug safety is the possibility of lethal effects. can the drug cause death? so since the punch from halle berry and the one from klitschko can both cause death - it should be a concern. who knows - i could die from a single punch from halle berry(my physical composition might vary from yours or vice versa).

Try and give weightings to things in your arguments and don't be giving simple ones.
i reiterate, death is death!

You are right on that. It does not make it any less irresponsible.
it does. . . . .obama and david cameron used marijuana as students but they knew where to draw the line. without any self-control, who knows which of the rehab centres they would be by now, perhaps in prison or even death!

Cut this crap, mate!
It will be silly to say the gangster rap music has not affected the way black American youths have been killing each other in gangs.
sagamite, there have been black on black violence before rap. . . . .there have been gangs before hip-hop.

Taking drugs is were the irresponsibility began.
i disagree. some of these drugs are social drugs. as long as it's a consumable quantity, you will not even be arrested.

You know it is addictive, you know it is not good for you and you know you don't need it.
sagamite, alcohol is also addictive. people take it for recreational use. the irresponsibility starts when people take too much.
hell, food is also addictive - why don't the authorities stop obese folks from going to eateries to pile more junk foods in their system. they know it's not good for them and yet they still take it. like i said, taking it is not the irresponsibility. . . .lacking the self control to overdose is the irresponsibility.

It is a No-Brainer for people with brains.
you will be surprised at the number of leaders who take drugs. . . . .you will be!

Theres a HUGE difference between kids and teenagers. Lets not get things mixed up please. As for the Fela bit, is Nigeria being the highest consumer of marijuana a coincidence ?
where did you pluck this stat from? are you saying people started using marijuana after fela was born? shocked shocked shocked

davidylan:
Perhaps because they are just more impressionable or due to poor parenting? I partially agree with your point of view and i put this down to the poor parenting skills on parade today. Too many parents willing to give up their responsibilities to teachers and the church.
mostly, it's poor parenting - which is why i think people should not be harsh on amy winehouse. fuck knows the kind of background she had.

Sagamite:
No 1, there are millions of kids that were influenced and are still being influenced by Fela.
in nigeria? i am yet to see anyone in his panties, half his face painted and walking around with a fat joint in lagos.

No 2, I can only speak for myself. I was not exposed to Fela and his way of life, I had great parents and I am more intelligent and confident than 99% of people. That mixture makes it harder for me to fall to peer pressure than the average Joe. You can see my consistent divergent views that I put on NL. I am happy and comfortable not to conform. Most people aren't. FACT!
what is the fate of other kids who didn't have great parents? is it their fault they turned out to be the degenerates of the society?

Cut this bullshyt, men.

Don't be coming with this dismissive view of proven, accepted and irrefutable scientific and empirical research done by world experts over wide samples that are being paid fck loads in the world's top unis.

Cut that crap.

Go and read about "Power" in some social science textbook.
let's agree to disagree. . . . . .i believe bad parenting is the major ill in the world today.

davidylan:
perhaps because you were well aware it might lead to your obituary? grin
so why should it affect the other kids? i mean - look at the hypocrisy. you see kids urging a movie heroes(james bond, jason bourne, jack bauer) to go on and kill the bad guys. as soon as you see arms on celebrities (chris brown or jay-z), the media slams hard on them that they are bad examples to the same kids who support violence on tv. where do we draw the line?

Sagamite:
Really?

Needed it?

You must be having a laugh!

No, they have no self-control and are mostly carefree. It is a popular artistic trait.

If I can't shoulder a responsibility, and I am an adult, my brain will never tell me the solution is drugs. That is a daft move.

Am I suppose to have pity for such people?

HELL, FCKING NO! Good riddance!
taking the drugs is not where the irresponsibility lies - it is how much they took!
not every drug user overdoses or dies. . . .as we all know, too much of everything is bad. . .same goes with food, alcohol and even water.
Music/Radio › Re: Amy Winehouse Is Dead by coogar: 8:58pm On Jul 23, 2011
Sagamite:
You are completely wrong.

You need to read more about youth brain development and social systems (especially influence). Most people will try to be like popular people, more so kids who are, by nature, more impressionable. In Psychology, it is called "Referent Power".

Because some few kids were able to know what to pick and not pick should not mean we can assume all kids can or should be able to. Natural Science will tell you that their brain is still being developed and will be shaped by social influence.

Science, mate.
so how come you and a million other nigerian youths didn't get influenced by fela anikulapo kuti. . . . . .where was natural science then? referent power is just a myth created by lazy parents to blame these celebrities(who have become scapegoats). i don't see how what artistes say or do affect kids when their school bus-drivers swear at other motorists, their parents smoke and they see things themselves. i never stuck my mum's scarf behind my shirt and jump from a skyscraper because i wanna emulate superman.

Sagamite:
That is a silly argument.

We can as well say, considering the amount of people that have died at sea, we should never go fishing in the seas again.

Or considering the amount of people that die from mining, we should stop mining.

You have to look at the need, requirements and benefits of an activity and balance it with the risk.

How does driving, in the slightest, tiniest bit compare with drug taking?

How does a bad habit compare with an economic necessity?
just like driving is a necessity to you. . . . .drugs are necessities to fiends. besides, these are artistes required to put high level performances every time they hit the stage. not every one of them can shoulder this huge responsibility so the godfathers in the industry introduce them to drugs. now which of the great artistes(dead or living) never took drugs - i cannot think of one. bob marley, fela, mike-jack, 2pac, notorious b.i.g, da grin, etc. they all used drugs social or recreational - and they used it because they needed it.
Music/Radio › Re: Amy Winehouse Is Dead by coogar: 8:48pm On Jul 23, 2011
Sagamite:
But on the other hand, phreabit's point is that it is only natural and inevitable that the actions of people publicly praised and adoration will rob off on most children.
seriously. . . . . .it is only when parents fail that they blame the derailment of their kids on celebrities. i listened to rap all my life. i never used drugs, smoked, kill people or join any group of gangstars. as a sensible child brought up in a cultured environment, you cling onto the good parts of these celebrities and delete the chaff. . . . .that is what i will expect my kids or any other kids out there to do.

a black boy once told 2pac he wanted him as a role model. . . . .2pac told him he is a lost child cos martin luther king or malcolm x should be his role model. these celebrities did not enjoy the same background most of us had in a normal family set up. some of them were raised by crack addicts, dope fiends, etc. it is a bit unfair to expect them to lead the life they never had or got used to growing up. we are all products of our environment - let us stop criticizing people for what they are.

I don't drink.

How are the other 2 activities senseless?
considering the number of innocent people that have died driving. . . .is it reasonable to now say if mr x dies by auto accident tomorrow morning then he's silly?

Read and understand! My statement asked "do you wish your daughter grow up to be like her?". What does that entail? The power of the media should not be underestimated. It is an extremely powerful tool that plays a huge role in the way kids turn out to be in future. As for the question you asked, that't true but remember Chris brown lost the teen choice awards "simply" because he hit scratched Rihanna.
what i wish for my daughter has no bearing. . . .it's just a charade. . . . .you can put a daughter in the abbey and still turn out to be a slut.
i'm sure amy's parents never wished her to die this way at the tender age of 27. . . .but what has happened has happened. i doubt chris brown cares about teen choice awards or what not. these people have their individual characters before they became celebs - that will not change because they want to be "good" role models to you or other kids out there. they don't care about such! they just want to live their lives(the way they want)!

this is naivety!

she was just who she wanted to be - she never asked to be anyone's role model. she's an artiste, a human being like you. was fela a good role model to you? michael jackson? d'banj? etc. if i become a celebrity tomorrow, will i ask to be anyone's role model? if you need role models, use john newton, faraday, einstein or avogadro!

She can go to bleeping hell for all I care (which is virtually zilt).
this is drugs we are talking about - most times, they wanna get off it but they just can't. the money is there to keep feeding the habits. . . .then her whole lifestyle is revolved around partying, clubbing, shows, more drinks, more drugs, hotel lobbies. it's not as easy as you think - initially, she wasn't forced to use drugs but after a while, she would be helpless even when she didn't want to continue using it.

you need to see them when rehabilitating - they become cold turkeys.
