I will not pay bride price, I will not buy credit and other stuffs for my gf, I will not give a dime out of my hard earned money to my wife, I will get a house help. These are things that will happen in a world of gender equality. If there is a feminist here that genuinely likes my comment, click like. smiley Hypocrites!!!
i want to pay bride price - it's our tradition. i have been doing my research - i want to marry a woman where the brideprice is the most expensive. it would be hard for such a bride to demand equality.

They want gender roles and still want equality. This list is just an epitome of what a man faces in africa under the guise of 'head of family.' I see the 'weaker' sex in shops built by the toil of men, while their husbands toil in harsh sun.
From primary to secondary, till university, men are made to go through harsh conditions, which these pathetic things don't care about, rather than their narrow and selfish views of life. To hell with 'head'! Who wants it anyway? That white elephant thing that brings no yield. angry
the idea of the brideprice is actually a good concept. why should inlaws trust the suitors with their precious daughter if there's no evidence he's financially capable to take care of her? this was why the idea of brideprice came from. there were some traditions where men have to wrestle & the winner takes the bride. the concept is simple - they want the best man for the women.

however, our african women are now trapped - they have an identity crisis. they don't know whether to adopt the western norm wholeheartedly or stick to the african norm wholeheartedly. the super-fraudulent ones want the best of both worlds which is hypocritical in principle.

This is the best and most soothing comment I've ever read anywhere smiley. But still puzzles me how you're unable to see the reasons for comparison, which is to prove that paying bp is not what makes a wife deputy to her husband, but his ability to rule his home. does he make enough money in his business? that's the crux of the issue. if he's making enough money, if he's taking care of the bills without complaints & if he has a good life insurance scheme then he's right......your further education is unnecessary!

stay at home - make food for him. do online or petty business from home if you really want to make your own money. this is no issue at all. go & rub his tummy and serve him his best meal.

Maga why?

Only to waste time lovey doveying up just to realize that I am supposed to buy 200 white paiiint for all the women in her village (among other personal effects)? And she too would be expecting me to do it?
if everything else fails, calculate her ovulation period and hammer her till she gets pregnant. trust me, 200 white paiiiiiiiiiint would be converted to 2 white handkerchiefs. grin

Noooo. There are other women from much more well-thinking families who would filter such things before they even meet my eye. (See aisha's post for example)
Those are the kind of in-laws I would want to be associated with, not hungry slave traders.
aisha is from the north! it's so easy for her to say that since it's not her tradition. if she's from the toughest part of mbaise village, she would be as quiet as a mouse.

to be fair to this women, it's not their fault but i agree with you they should be doing better to convince their parents that this practise is demeaning. i have come to realise that these brides rarely put up a fight!

As much as I'm not happy about the international break, I hope its a chance for some of these injured players to return. The likes of Falcao, Evans,Jones, Rafael in particular, Who all seem to have weird unspecified injuries. We really need to be pushing on from here now.
4 players would be back by the time we face arsenal @ the emirates. we are not far off from top 4 now. if we can put a run of victories together for 4-5 games, we would be 2nd.

newcastle are now behind us. 2 weeks ago, they were hovering above relegation waters. 4 straight league wins & they are in the top half of the league table. we should be able to beat arsenal.

Misogynist2014: Dear coogar, why is it that the groom price is seen as profit, while the bride price is seen as purchase?
groom price seen as profit to whom? have you stayed anywhere in india? we are talking about what obtains in nigeria & you are talking of india. what's the correlation?

As far as I'm concerned, it is not necessary for a man to pay a bride price, before he owns a woman, all he needs is wisdom, a virtue women lack. I'm proud to be a man. I would have killed myself a long time ago if I were born a woman. sad
what kinda wisdom is this? shotgun marriage? some of us like to do things the legal way. i have no problem at all with that tradition. men have to prove themselves worthy - the bride's family must be sure the groom can afford to take care of their daughter - however, the bride must know her position in her husband's house. he is the head while she's the deputy.

QED!!!

I still insist it's not that easy
i agree it's not that easy...
meanwhile, my extended family are also traditional and they believe a man must have 5 wives(at least). if it's not easy for you to convince your extended family to take out the brideprice, be rest assured it won't be easy for me to refuse multiple wives. grin cheesy grin

The bolded is very funny. We don't give such lists from where I come from. We also don't have Umuada or anything like that. Bride price is also returned to the groom.
we are speaking for the men who are marrying from the villages where a long list is the norm. umuadas are the most vocal when it comes to this list. i heard they have so much power to the extent that they can cancel the whole ceremony if they are not satisfied.

Most Nigerian men seems to hate feminism. Why do you hate feminists? I absolutely agree that domestic violence will reduce in Nigeria if bride price was abolished but I also don't think it is justifed to be violent towards your wife because you paid her bride price.
we don't hate feminism - we hate the hypocrisy attached to it. caucasian males don't pay brideprice so if the bride demands equality then by all means she has a right to it.

nigerian women love the idea of the bride price, so why should they demand the equality the caucasian female is enjoying. that's eating one's cake & still wanting to keep some in their bra.

no type of violence is justified whether there's bride price issue or not ---- but i think a man that was made to pay premium for his bride has the right to decide how he wants his wife to be. the decision to work or not, frequency of sėx, how many kids to have, where to stay, where to work, what to wear, etc should be solely the husband's decision.

he's paid the price to have such luxury!

On a serious note, that is why u young guys should start going home and voicing out ur concerns over all these unusual traditional rites.
By d time somebody from another town tells of what he spent in ur town compared to urs and use it to ridicule ur gals, nobody will tell u and ur people to do something fast so u will not be left behind.
D thing is our guys stay in townships, never going home and still expect things to change when they r supposed to champion d change, u get it.
Its not a feminist thing. Though daughters protest to the hearing of their fathers. But d final judgement always come from d men of d house.
So men, go to work and stop whinning.
i don't have a problem with the culture cos i know the bride is not my equal. my in-laws can charge N50m if they so please......let the men who have a problem with paying the bride price fight their cause!

however, a woman who allowed herself to be bought like a piece of furniture has no right to claim gender equality. she was formally educated like the man that was asked to pay for her.....she probably makes as much money as the man paying her brideprice so i don't see anything else but hypocrisy here.

I and many women will be happy if it was as simple as that. You need to remember that it goes beyond the girls immediate family. The extended family are all involved. We have started doing something. I believe that with time, it will stop.
babygirl, put your foot down & tell your parents and the extended family you are not having it. if the extended family wants yams & underwear, your parents should sort them - it's got nothing to do with your suitor. he's marrying you, not the extended family that probably didn't contribute one penny to your education or child development.

I totally understand what you mean by hypocisy but bride price should not mean the woman is no longer an equal. Also remember that unless a man is marrying from a very poor and/or greedy family, the brideprice is nothing near the cost of hosting the traditional marriage which is usually hosted by the brides family.
you need to see the list in some eastern states. laptops, blackberry & apple phones prominently feature on some lists - and its expected to be paid by the groom to show he's capable.

why are the fraudulent naija feminists not doing anything to stop this? you will even find out that village women(umuadas) are more vociferous when it comes to that list. so when a hubby acts like he owns his wife, i think he's justified. if i pay premium to buy a car, i can use it as i please. domestic violence will reduce in nigeria if the tradition of bride price is abolished completely.

I have always hated the idea of bride price. I personally think it is one culture we should stop.
what are you people waiting for then? you want Jesus to come down from heaven & stop it? only nigerian girls can stop it - if you insist that you don't want your suitor to pay a dime as brideprice, your parents will not take a dime from him. its as simple as that.

personally, i don't have a problem with the culture. i spend more money on expensive vacations, gifts, etc than any list of brideprice my in laws can manage......i only have a problem with the hypocrisy. if a bride has taken money from her groom then she can never be his equal.

Yes, but is this how we are going to continue? I thought we were more creative with Herrera. Our forward play was faster, or does that have to do with Rafael on the right side?
van gaal has already explained his switch of formation. he said the diamond formation was too expansive and it spreads us thin in the defence. he said it leaves us struggling towards the end of the game & we invite unnecessary pressure.

with the 4-1-4-1, we have defended better, we have closed down the opposition & city only broke our resolve when we went a man down & lost rojo to injury. until we can have our first choice defenders back....we should continue with the 4-1-4-1.

playing well doesn't necessarily guarantee good results. we would be judged with the results not the sëxy football. arsenal played the sexiëst football in the last 10 years with nothing to show for it. no one remembers all that, the most important statistics are the 3 points.
