Your mechanic is right. Since he isn't a dealership performing dealership level repairs then you should use water first to confirm there are no leaks before switching to coolant unless you're using all those low quality coolants.

Highest a few days is enough for this test.

True. Use water for a few days and once you verify no leaks, drain and fill with quality coolant.
