Crime › Rape Accusation Was To Punish My Boyfriend – Teenager by cuvox(op): 6:55am On Dec 21, 2015 |
There is a new twist to the alleged rape case of a 19-year-old teenager, Gbemisola, as she now claims to have framed 24-year-old Kunle in order to punish him.
PUNCH Metro gathered on Friday that Gbemisola and Kunle were in an intimate relationship and had sexual intercourse by mutual consent.
It was further learnt that Gbemisola had sent some of her nude pictures to Kunle on Whatsapp before things went awry between them.
Our correspondent had reported on Friday that Gbemisola, a caterer, had alleged that Kunle asked her out, which she turned down because she had a boyfriend already.
She had alleged that the suspect lured her into his parents’ house in Agiliti Estate, Ketu, and raped her.
She claimed that the suspect did a picsmix of her nude pictures, included her phone number, and shared them with his friends on the Internet.
The suspect, while reacting, had told our correspondent that Gbemisola was his girlfriend, adding that the 19-year-old sent him the nude pictures, which he only showed to his friends.
On Friday, PUNCH Metro learnt that the suspect was arrested by the police and the case was immediately transferred to the State Department of Criminal Investigation, Yaba.
After both of them were grilled by police detectives, it was discovered that Gbemisola lied in her statement to the police at the Ketu Police Division.
Kunle, who was in tears at the SDCI, told our correspondent that the only evidence he had of their relationship was destroyed by Gbemisola on the morning of his arrest.
He said, “I am in a big trouble. The only evidence I have that she sent those pictures to me was my chat history. But immediately the police came to arrest me, she picked my phone and threw it into a well.
“She is the only one that can save me by just telling the truth. We were in a relationship and I didn’t rape her.”
Our correspondent, who later spoke with Gbemisola, asked why she lied against Kunle.
Gbemisola said she wanted to punish him for betraying her trust and sharing her nude pictures with his friends and family members on the Internet, adding that some of his friends had been calling to demand “their own share of sex.”
She said she threw his phone into the well because Kunle claimed he had evidence of their relationship.
She said, “He is my boyfriend and we had dated for just one week when he asked for my nude pictures. When two people are dating and they are in love, anything can happen between them.
“Initially, I declined and he started begging me. I asked him to swear on oath that he would later delete the pictures from his phone and he did. I sent the pictures because of the trust I had in him.”
Gbemisola said she visited him few days afterwards, and he had sex with her.
“He didn’t rape me, but I gave in because he begged, saying it had been long since he did it.”
She said the following day, Kunle asked for a recharge card, which she sent to him, adding that he made more demands and when she declined, the suspect threatened to make her a “celebrity” in the community.
“I discovered he never loved me and merely wanted to use and dump me.
“When he asked me to come to his house again, I refused and asked him to do his worst. He then asked me to log in to Whatsapp. Immediately I did, I saw that he had made my nude photos his Display Picture (DP). He also sent them to me, as well,” she added.
She said her first boyfriend, who got hold of her phone saw the pictures, and was angry.
Gbemisola said she also received text messages and telephone calls from those who saw the pictures.
“They were saying, ‘come and let’s sleep with you too.’ I was humiliated. A few days later, I was on the road when Kunle saw me and started mocking me. I almost committed suicide,” she added.
She said she damaged Kunle’s laptop after he continued with his threat that he had another explicit video of her.
“I lied against him to punish him for what he did. I threw away his phone into the well because he claimed to have evidence. I wanted to destroy him completely.
“But seeing how far this case has gone, I want to forgive him. We are from the same Ondo State and our parents are friends,” she added.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Joe Offor, told our correspondent that investigation was on.
He said, “Both parties agreed that the intercourse of that date was consensual and could not have amounted to rape. Other aspects of the allegation are under investigation.” http://www.punchng.com/rape-accusation-was-to-punish-my-boyfriend-teenager/cc lalasticlala |

Business › Banks Stop Use Of ATM Cards Abroad #Emefieleconomics by cuvox(op): 6:06am On Dec 20, 2015 |
Deposit Money Banks have commenced a process to stop all customers from using their payment cards, popularly known as Automated Teller Machine cards, for dollar-denominated transactions when they travel abroad with effect from January 1, 2016.
SUNDAY PUNCH’s investigation also revealed the banks would not allow their customers to use naira-denominated ATM cards locally for transactions denominated in forex.
This means bank customers will not be able to use their cards to buy products from foreign e-commerce sites like e-bay and amazon.com in which payments are made in forex.
The development follows the lingering scarcity of foreign exchange, especially the dollar, to settle obligations arising from customers’ use of the ATM cards for forex-denominated transactions.
Already, Standard Chartered Bank has notified its customers that from January 1, 2016, they will not be able to use their naira-denominated ATM cards for transactions that are denominated in foreign currencies, either locally or when they travel abroad.
In a notice to its customers, Standard Chartered said, “This is to notify you that from January 1, 2016, your naira card will no longer be enabled for international use. This is as a result of the limited foreign exchange supply in the financial market.”
Asked how long the suspension of cards from international transactions would be, the spokesperson for Standard Chartered Nigeria, Mrs. Dayo Adurogbo, said, “We cannot give a definite date. It depends on how soon it is available. We will do everything to meet our customers’ demand once it is available.”
Further findings showed that a number of other banks had stopped customers from using their ATM cards abroad but had yet to officially communicate this to them.
Some customers told our correspondent that when they notified their banks of plans to travel and the need to enable their cards work overseas, they were simply informed that the cards could not be enabled for now due to issues relating to forex scarcity.
SUNDAY PUNCH findings showed others banks might issue notices similar to that of Standard Chartered Bank before the end of the year.
“We had some discussions recently and some top bank officials said they would stop customers from using their naira-denominated cards for international transactions due to the serious challenges in getting forex to settle their international partners,” a top bank official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to speak on the matter, said on Friday.
The current situation means customers travelling abroad for Christmas and New Year may face severe payment challenges, a situation that may mar their shopping plans.
The fall in prices of crude oil, the main earner of foreign exchange for Nigeria, has made the nation’s forex income to reduce drastically, creating dollar scarcity crisis for the Central Bank of Nigeria.
The CBN has been rationing dollar to banks, importers and other forex users as the nation’s foreign exchange reserves continue to deplete, hitting $29.4bn on December 7, 2015.
The PUNCH had exclusively reported on Thursday that banks had cut the amount that their customers could spend using their debit and credit cards abroad by between 70 and 90 per cent. This took effect during the first week of December for the majority of the banks.
Specifically, banks cut customers’ card spending in foreign currencies from the annual $50,000 allowed by the CBN to between $5,000 and $15,000.
According to findings by our correspondent, Ecobank Nigeria Plc has reduced its limit from $50,000 to $5,000, with a maximum of $500 monthly and $100 daily expenditure.
Skye Bank Plc, in a notice to its customers via email, also slashed its international card spending limit from $50,000 to $12,000 annually, a maximum of $1,000 monthly and $100 daily.
Wema Bank Plc also slashed spending on its payment cards from $50,000 to $10,000 annually, $1,000 monthly and $100 daily.
Although other banks have yet to confirm their new international card spending limits, findings by our correspondent revealed that the new limits for most of them ranged from $5,000 to $15,000 annually, and $500 to $1,000 monthly. http://www.punchng.com/banks-stop-use-of-atm-cards-abroad/cc lalasticlala |

Business › Naira Plummets To 269 Against Dollar by cuvox(op): 5:56am On Dec 17, 2015 |
The naira tumbled to 269 against the United States dollar at the parallel market on Wednesday as the Central Bank of Nigeria commenced rationing the greenback to Bureaux De Change operators in its weekly foreign exchange sale.
The dollar was sold for 260 at the parallel market on Tuesday.
The central bank cut the amount it sold to each of the 2,270 BDC operators that participated in Wednesday’s sale to $10,000, down from the $30,000 sold to the operators last Wednesday, the acting President, Association of Bureaux de Change Operators, Aminu Gwadabe, said.
The CBN had offered $84.5m at a similar sale two weeks ago, Reuters reported.
Plunging oil revenues, which account for 90 per cent of Nigeria’s foreign currency earnings and more than half of the Federal Government’s income, have hit public finances and the naira.
Businesses are struggling to access dollars as the CBN rations the greenback to save the foreign reserves.“There is dollar scarcity right now, the central bank has shrunk supplies despite increasing the number of BDCs at its window,” Gwadabe said.
The CBN had a few weeks ago asked all the BDC operators to submit accounts showing their dollar usage at the start of each week before they could access future sales, a move that forex dealers said was aimed at curbing speculation.
On Friday, the CBN issued a circular, which, among other things, invited the BDC operators to also consider obtaining dollars from private sources to fund personal and business travels, its latest attempt to conserve the dwindling reserves.
But it added that individuals wishing to sell more than $10,000 would be required to disclose the source of the funds, tightening the rules around the BDC operations in an economy already suffering from a sharp fall in oil prices since mid-2014.
The nation’s external reserves shed 0.4 per cent in a week to $29.46bn as of December 15, the latest central bank data showed.
At the official interbank market, the currency has been pegged since February and closed at 196.97 on Wednesday.
The BDCs account for less than five per cent of the total dollar trade in Nigeria, but provide an indication of where investors see liquidity and are willing to trade it source http://www.punchng.com/naira-plummets-to-269-against-dollar/CC lalasticlala seun obinoscopy |
Politics › CAN Protests Moves To List Nigeria Among Arab Nations To Fight ISIS by cuvox(op): 5:44am On Dec 17, 2015 |
UMBRELLA body of Christians in Nigeria, the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, last night protested the attempt by the current All Progressives Congress, APC, government to subtly enlist Nigeria among Arab nations to fight ISIS.
It was reported on foreign news last night that Saudi Arabia was building a coalition of 34 Muslim/Arab countries to fight ISIS and Nigeria was named among the 34.
A statement late last night by the General Secretary of CAN, Rev. Musa Asake, said: “This singular gesture of the Buhari government betrays so much, and tends to confirm our fears that underneath everything this government is doing, there is an agenda with strong Islamic undertones, aimed at undermining Nigeria’s pluralistic character and neutrality regarding government’s affiliation to any one religion.
“While joining hands with other countries to fight ISIS is something good, our country must not be tagged as a Muslim or Arab nation. Christians must make a public statement showing their discontent on this development which portends great danger to national unity and integration.” source http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/12/can-protests-moves-to-list-nigeria-among-arab-nations-to-fight-isis/CC lalasticlala ishilove seun obinoscopy |

Crime › Trigger-happy DSS Agentskill Policeman In Cold Blood by cuvox(op): 7:14am On Dec 16, 2015 |
There is growing tension in Ado Ekiti, the capital of Ekiti State, between policemen and officers of the Department of State Services after two cops were shot on the premises of the DSS in Ado Ekiti, leading to the death of one of them.
It was gathered that the policemen, Sergeant Sylvester Malik and Corporal Mough Tergwu, were serving at the Special Protection Unit of the Nigeria Police Force in Lokoja, Kogi State.
Sources told our correspondent that the policemen were attached by the SPU to a former Executive Secretary of the National Health Insurance Scheme, Dr. Femi Thomas.
It was learnt that the DSS officers had stormed Thomas’ house in Ado Ekiti on Tuesday in three Hilux vehicles to invite the former executive secretary to their office in the state capital.
One of the sources said, “It was Sylvester that even opened the gate for them. Once they made their intention known, the man (Thomas) agreed to follow them.”The former executive secretary, it was learnt, followed the DSS officers in his Highlander, with number plate, FCT 408 ABJ.
The two policemen were also said to have accompanied Thomas to the DSS office.
Trouble, however, started on the premises of the DSS after some of its officials complained that the policemen were armed.
It was gathered that during an argument, the policemen were shot.
A source said the policemen offered to stay outside, that they could not hand over their firearms to the DSS men.
He said, “Nobody knew what transpired afterwards, but suddenly there were sounds of gunshots and soon after, the two policemen were lying in a pool of blood. The policemen did not quarrel with them, so I don’t know what happened. Malik was shot thrice in the stomach.
It was a real mess.”It was learnt that Malik died immediately while Tergwu was rushed to the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital. Malik’s remains were also taken to the hospital’s morgue.
The spokesperson for the police in the state, Mr. Alberto Adeyemi, said the command was aware of the incident, adding that investigation was ongoing.
He said, “We have already sent out SITREP to the Force headquarters in Abuja. As soon as we heard, the Deputy Commissioner of Police on ground, and the AC OPS went to the DSS office. They confirmed that two policemen were shot on the premises of the DSS. One died, while the other one is still receiving treatment. We have told the DSS to hand over the officers responsible for the shooting to the police. ”The Force spokesperson, ACP Olabisi Kolawole said, “The culprits will be prosecuted.” source http://www.punchng.com/trigger-happy-dss-agents-kill-policeman-in-cold-blood/CC lalasticlala, ishilove seun obinoscopy |

Politics › Somebody Must Be Lying About Dasuki - Vanguard by cuvox(op): 5:51am On Dec 13, 2015 |
“Dasuki lists ex-governors, PDP chiefs in $2b deals.”
Yusuf Alli, NATION, December 3, 2015, page 1.
“Quote me anywhere, Dasuki has not done anything like that. It is absolutely untrue [underlining mine].. It is the figment of the imagination of the authors aimed at creating falsehood for reasons best known to them and Nigerians should disregard them.”
Mr A. Raji, SAN, Dasuki’s lawyer.
Seldom has a front page report written by a veteran journalist, like Yusuf Alli, been so quickly disclaimed by a party close to the matter as this one. Of the two disputants, Alli and Raji, Alli has the uphill task because he must not only defend himself on the charges made by Raji that he had caused his paper to publish falsehood, he must defend the profession of journalism as well. In a matter such as this one, involving the Federal Government, now under the All Progressives Congress, APC, and Dasuki, Nigerians want to be told the truth and nothing but the truth. There should be no government propaganda served as news, nor media trial of suspects. The facts must speak for themselves.
At the moment certain facts have placed Alli in the defenders position on this matter. The NATION, for which he writes, is not neutral on this matter and cannot be relied upon to be objective. It is the APC’s paper and there is no need to pretend about that. I have subscribed to the paper everyday from the first publication because it provided the balance to the ruling party’s attempt to feed us with lies. I remain an unrepentant disciple of I.F Stone who said that “Every government is run by liars and nothing they say should be believed”. (VANGUARD BOOK OF QUOTATIONS p 80). I remain to be convinced that a change has come. With APC in government and power, the NATION has been transformed to the government’s paper. As far as I am concerned it is difficult to regard anybody serving on the paper as objective since the owners have an interest in the outcome of every matter that has a political overtone. That is one reason why everything written in it that is destructive of the interests of anybody not in APC has to be examined critically – irrespective of the writer.
Lawyer Raji had called Alli a journalist a liar. Alli must respond. While lawyers are under no obligation to utter the truth, journalists worldwide operate under the same code of conduct – FACTS ARE SACRED; COMMENTS ARE FREE. Alli cannot take shelter under the excuse of “protecting sources” when Raji is claiming that the journalist is guilty of defamation of Dasuki and engaging in media trial. Alli was not running commentary; he was writing a report. He would have violated the first principle of journalism if anything in that report is untrue. Neither can he claim he was seeking justice. The media gets the facts and lets the judiciary determine what is just. And the general public also must have the facts; but, it better be done without media mob rule encouraged by jaundiced reporting.
Dasuki’s matter presents us with one of those cases which test our credentials as democrats and fighters for justice to the limit. Already some lawyers formerly believed to be strongly in support of human rights have also changed their tunes. Recent appointments and the pronouncements of some of the lawyers have revived the feeling that they have been seeking public office all along. “Machiavellism”, the end justifies the means, seems rampant these days. So, in our haste to “deal with” some people everything including unsubstantiated allegations about the accused is reported as fact for consumption by the gullible.
Dasuki, as we all know, has served the previous government and he had been involved in a personal matter with the present President in the past. Although, Buhari had pronounced that he harbours no ill-feelings, some of his aides in government might not be so generous. Indeed they might consider that they are doing him a favour by helping to settle scores. They might jeopardize the cases by doing shoddy jobs of investigation and allowing the accused persons, even if guilty, to get away on account of their mistakes.
One such mistake might have been inadvertently revealed in the report by Alli. Even if true, the report had alerted several individuals who might be implicated that they should run as fast as they can away from Nigeria. Thereafter, the cases will take ten times longer to be prosecuted as the Federal government will find itself fighting several cases for extradition of wanted individuals. Buhari would have been out of office.
Meanwhile, it is curious that several individuals who should be called in by the original investigators and the EFCC had not been invited. Since the investigation was supposed to cover 2007 to 2015, then one would have expected the Ministers of Finance, Defence, the NSAs, as well as the three Governors of the Central Bank (Soludo, Sanusi and Emefelue) should have been asked to shed light on how and why such huge amounts of public funds were moved out on the orders of Dasuki. Are my Fellow Countrymen (as Thomas Carlyle, 1795-1881, said about Britons “mostly fools”) supposed to believe that the National Security Adviser, NSA, can drive trailers to the Central Bank and order the CBN Governor to load US$2 billion and it would be done – no questions asked? Are we to believe that none of the CBN Governors called Yar’Adua and Jonathan to ask if they should request for a straight jacket for a lunatic called NSA? Were the withdrawals authorized and who did it? Was Okonjo-Iweala aware that so much money was being taken from the CBN and did she raise an alarm? If the NSA can so easily hijack US$2bn maybe Abuja has become one great lunatic asylum…

Politics › Niger To Transfer 500 Boko Haram Prisoners To Nigeria - Reuters by cuvox(op): 1:17pm On Dec 09, 2015 |
Niger has agreed to transfer hundreds of prisoners from the militant Islamist group Boko Haram back to their home country of Nigeria to reduce pressure on its crammed prisons, judicial sources said on Tuesday.
Boko Haram militants mostly operate in northeastern Nigeria but have also stepped up their insurgency within Niger's southern region of Diffa in recent months, carrying out dozens of attacks.
Niger has declared a state of emergency there in an effort to improve security and has made hundreds of arrests.
"Nigeria sent a working group here (to Niger) last week and the two sides have established an initial list of 500 detainees who will soon be transferred to Nigeria," said a magistrate working on the case who asked not to be named.
He did not give the exact timing of the transfer or say how the potentially dangerous prisoners would be transported.
The prisoners are currently being held in the detention centers of Kollo, Diffa and Koutoukale, all of which are overpopulated due to arrests of Boko Haram militants, a justice ministry source said..
Niger and Nigeria are both members of an 8,700-strong regional taskforce dedicated to destroying a group that has killed thousands of people and displaced millions in its push to create an Islamic caliphate in the region.
However, the task force's operations have stalled for logistical reasons, security sources say, and regional armies are instead seeking to counter the group alone. source http://www.reuters.com/article/us-nigeria-violence-niger-idUSKBN0TR2NF20151208 |

Politics › Dont Go For Police/army Recruitement Now - Biafra Leaders To Ndigbo, Ss by cuvox(op): 6:37am On Dec 09, 2015 |
Meanwhile, reacting to the recent directive by President Buhari for the recruitment of an additional 10,000 policemen, nationwide, the Biafra Independent Movement, BIM, former Movement for the Actualization of Sovereign State of Biafra, MASSOB, in conjunction with Biafra Veteran Soldiers in Anambra North Senatorial Zone, yesterday, cautioned their Igbo kinsmen and their South South counterparts against participating in the proposed recruitment into police and Army for now.
The Biafra veterans, who spoke against the backdrop of the current insecurity of Ndigbo who are serving in the Federal Government armed forces and the police, also condemned the siege laid by policemen and soldiers in some states of the South East zone, including Anambra, Abia, Enugu, Eboyi and Rivers.
Recruitment
In a statement after a meeting at Nteje, Oyi Local Government Area of Anambra State, which dwelt on internal security matters, in Anambra North senatorial zone, leader of Biafran Veterans, General Robinson Nnanna said, intelligence report at his disposal on the formula regarding the police recruitment exercise had revealed that Igbo applicants upon their completion of intensive courses, either as cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Inspectors or as recruit constables would be posted to North East where they would be vulnerable to Boko Haram attacks while their Northern police counterparts would be transferred to South East and parts of South-South.
The statement by Deputy National Director for Information, of Biafra Independent Movement, BIM, Mazi Chris Mocha, enjoined Igbo applicants, who have interest in joining the Nigeria police or Army to wait until the terror war in Northeast was over.
At the zonal meeting attended by Lt. Col. Alex Ezenwaka, Col. Anthony Onyeesi, Emelife Francis, among others, the Veterans frowned at the critics of the emergence of pro-Biafra groups, saying there would have been no clamour for a Biafra republic if the Igbo were not treated as second class citizens and seen as inferior subjects rather than as equal owners of Nigeria.
They however, urged the Biafran leader, Chief Ralph Uwazuruike to keep up his good work, without minding whose ox is gored. CULLED FROM: Kanu detained in the interest of peace FG tells court SOURCE: http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/12/kanu-detained-in-the-interest-of-peace-fg-tells-court/ |

Health › Dangers Of Harmattan And How To Cope With It by cuvox(op): 6:20am On Dec 09, 2015 |
The harmattan season is in full swing in many parts of Nigeria. The weather can be very cold, dry and dusty. Residents should expect heavy winds and chilly weather in the morning.
The northern part of the country is worst hit by the cold weather, which starts in December and ends around the end of January. It is referred to as the ‘Nigerian winter’.
Experts also add that many people are likely to face health challenges during this period. Family Health physician, Dr.Femi Omolola, says it is the time to keep warm before going to bed to avoid being exposed to weather-related health problems.
Omolola warns that asthmatic patients and people living with sickle cell anaemia need to prepare to face such health challenges that may likely affect their joints and restrict their movement.
He says, “If you are suffering from any disease of the joint, such as arthritis, sickle cell anaemia, rheumatism or osteoporosis, you should take more care because the cold but dry weather encourages brittle bones.”
The physician also notes that the cold and dry air that blows during harmattan irritates the respiratory system and makes it difficult for asthmatic patients to breathe easily at night and in the morning.
Another physician at the Public Health Department of University of Wisconsin, United States of America, Dr. Tinsely Davis, describes unprotected exposure to cold weather as an open invitation to diseases like rheumatism, cardiac arrest, pneumonia and arthritis; and, in severe cases, death from hypothermia.
Davis notes that staying unprotected from a cold weather, such as the one we are experiencing right now, could lead to joint and muscle pains, which may result in rheumatic pain in the neck, back or legs in future.
She says, “Typical chronic rheumatic pains in joints or muscles become more intense if people are exposed to cold weather. Therefore, if you get the chills quickly, you may want to avoid, as much as possible, being exposed to such cold temperature.”
Davis adds that the respiratory system suffers greatly when the body is exposed to cold and dry weather like that of the harmattan.
According to her, the cool temperature helps the bacteria and virus that cause pneumonia, laryngitis and pharyngitis to thrive.
She states, “The risk of respiratory irritation is quite high when the weather is too cold and it becomes easy to catch these bacterial or viral infections that cause problems in the lungs, throat, nose or ear.
“It first starts with trivial illnesses like cold, catarrh and cough. Gradually, it becomes more serious to neuralgia (pain) in the head or torso, toothaches, headaches and sinus; then paralysis of the eyelids, mouth and nerves or cardiac failure.”
There are so many challenges one could face during this period. They include cracking of lips or cold, dry skin, catarrh, cough and It is important to stay safe and healthy, especially because cold temperatures bring risks. Please look after yourselves and follow these steps to cope better with cold weather.
Dressing
If you have to go outside, you must dress in warm clothes. Even if you are only making a short journey, be sure to dress in lots of layers. Layers work better than a single thick item because air is trapped in them, thereby keeping you warm. After all, you can also remove layers at your destination.
Another way to cope with extreme cold weather, in terms of dressing, is to look after your extremities and exposed areas. Hats, scarves, gloves and appropriate footwear are compulsory. Before you leave your house, ask yourself this question: If I have to hang around, say for a delay in transport, or my car gets caught in traffic, would I stay warm? If the answer is no, you are not dressed appropriately..
Moisturise your skin
The cold weather can be particularly harsh on our skin if we don’t protect it. It makes us to look dull, tired and even older.
While it might leave us feeling warmer, it can also dry out the skin. Unless our skin is properly hydrated, it can’t repair itself properly, meaning that every little irritation could become a bigger problem.
Heavy wind during cold weather can remove the UV filtering lipids from our skin and accelerate sunburn. This is why it is essential that we make up for the loss of these lipids with creams that block the suns UV rays.
Of course, if you don’t protect your skin from the cold, you run the risk of developing skin conditions in later in life. There could be more serious consequences that arise from not protecting your skin, such as cancer of the skin.
Keeping a lip balm in your pocket, car and handbag for constant applications will keep chapped, dry lips at bay.
Eat hot food
Eating hot soup is the best answer to the cold weather. It does not only warm you up, but fills your stomach. Coffee and cocoa are also good at warming you up, but they don’t do quite a good job of filling your stomach.
Eating hot food will also ensure that bacteria and virus do not thrive in your belly.
Finally, you must not forget to stay hydrated by drinking a lot of water. And for those who live in areas with wells with no option to heat water, well water is usually warm from 4.30 am - 6am.... just fetch and use it to bathe after adding antiseptic. source http://www.punchng.com/coping-with-harmattan/cc lalasticlala, seun |
Health › Mycoplasma Genitalium: Scientists Confirm A New Sexually Transmitted Disease by cuvox(op): 6:09am On Dec 09, 2015 |
Scientists in the United Kingdom have confirmed the existence of a new sexually transmitted disease called mycoplasma genitalium.
The confirmation of the bacterial disease, which causes painful urination among other things, as an STD comes more than two decades after it was first discovered.
A team of fourteen researchers arrived at the conclusion after conducting a national survey of the sexual lifestyles and attitudes of British men and women.
The researchers said the study, which involved the testing urine from 4,507 sexually experienced participants aged 16 to 44 years for MG, “strengthens evidence that MG is an STI”.
They added, “MG was identified in over one per cent of the population, including in men with high-risk behaviours in older age groups that are often not included in STI prevention measures.”
The study found that men of black ethnicity were more likely to test positive for MG and showed that the prevalence of the disease was 1.2 per cent in men and 1.3 per cent in women.
It also found that for both men and women, the disease was strongly associated with reporting risk behaviours such as increasing the number of total and new partners and unsafe sex in the past year.
Although it recorded no positive MG tests in men aged 16 to19, prevalence peaked at 2.1 per cent in men aged 25–34 years, while prevalence in was highest in 16 to 19-year-olds at 2.4 per cent and decrease with age.
It added, “Men with MG were more likely to report previously diagnosed gonorrhoea, syphilis or non-specific urethritis, and women previous trichomoniasis.”
Health.com in an article on about the study quoted a clinical associate professor, Raquel Dardik, as saying the symptoms for women included irritation, painful urination and bleeding after sex, while those for men included painful urination and watery discharge from the penis.
According to the article, the disease has been linked to both inflammation in the cervix (cervicitis) and pelvic inflammatory disease, which is a serious condition often caused by other STDs like chlamydia and gonorrhea.
Dardik was also quoted as saying that around 10 per cent of women who develop PID (which causes abdominal pain, fever, painful cervix, and pain or bleeding during sex), could blame MG as the underlying cause.
She, however, said people could get tested for MD and that it was treatable with the antibiotic azithromycin, adding that the use of condoms was an effective way of preventing it.
Dr. Jorgen Jensen of the Mycoplasma Laboratory, Statens Serum Institut in Denmark, however, said although the single-dose azithromycin treatment was best for MG, it was not good enough.
He explained in an article published in an issue of Clinical Infectious Diseases that although initial in vitro studies suggested that antibiotics of the tetracycline class were active, clinical experience soon demonstrated their inefficiency in producing both microbiologic and clinical cure.
He added that two recently published observational studies of 120 Australian and 183 Norwegian MG-positive patients found that only 84 per cent and 79 per cent, respectively, were cured by a single 1-g dose of azithromycin.
Jensen said, “(A study the study by) Mena et al provides a clear-cut answer to the question of whether multidose doxycycline or single-dose azithromycin is most efficient for the treatment of M. genitalium—positive urethritis; undoubtedly, azithromycin is best. However, it is not good enough, and additional studies of new approaches are definitely needed.” source: http://www.punchng.com/scientists-confirm-new-sexual-disease/ |
