Science/TechnologyInternet Mess In Nigeria And The Highly Corrupt Telecommunication Industry by cuvox(op):
written by @naijamedia

What could be more agonising than slow internet? And when it just doesn't work, it's like coal placed on the head.

I've always been frustrated by poor internet, from mobile services to internet services, it's just so bad. Cyber cafes are alienating, there's been a sharp surge of internet service providers with different shapes and sizes of modems, various bundle/data plans for individuals and corporate bodies. Mention them; "Smile" their 80K unlimited 'wayo' would make you cry instead. "Spectranet" seems to have a net fishing data off your modem through a "VERY SLOW" and disguising means. With "Swift", your data is in a vacuum and is swiftly sucked away even when you don't use it. MTN, Glo, Etisalat, Airtel have taught us patience and temper management.

Last week, i was reading the dailies on my mobile phone, we all know it's been Buhari and corruption ever since he climbed the mantle. From Oil theft to money laundering, the NNPCs and co, no one seems to have taken notice of our Telecommunication industry as being highly corrupt as well. Oh yes! It struck me!!! What's going on with NCC and the Federal Ministry of Information Communications Technology? What has Buhari's administration done so far? Basically, nothing!

Believe it or not, these big telecommunication companies bribe/lobby these agencies. Yes! I've been there. I've worked in a manufacturing company where government agencies like NAFDAC and CPC take home envelopes and car loads of company products once they arrive instead of going straight to the laboratories and manufacturing halls to check consumer products and manufacturing processes. This is the same thing happening in the telecommunication sector in this country. Old facilities are not replaced with new and advanced ones, new trends are not implemented, network masts are inadequate, Nigeria only has one Satellite; the NigComSat-1, the mobile service providers rip off our money via fictitious services and data plans. The list could be numerous.

I paused a little while from the dailies i was reading, and i was thinking: In what way do concerned Nigerians make this known to this present administration? I thought. Perhaps, making it go viral on twitter and the internet at large? Yes! That could work. The internet played a major role in Buhari's emergence as president.

This can work. What do you think?

Suggest hashtags for a twitter trend and let's make out grievances known.

a friend who traveled abroad wrote this on facebook.. fear of anti-spam bot no go let me share link. tired of serving bans..

read and enjoy.

my experience being a newbie in a foreign land.

Touching down at Toronto Pearson International Airport from Nigeria was a great life time experience for me, because it was my first flight, first time out of Nigeria. The journey took about 22 hours including a 6 hours transit at Frankfurt before we touched down in Canada.

I had an hotel reserved...got into the hotel smiling never knew the smiling go soon turn frustration hehehehehe.

The first challenge was opening the door to my room with that electronic card. I struggled with the door for awhile; I had to call the reception to the rescue. I got to my room and saw the TV, Air Conditioner and lights all switched off. I didn't know I was meant to insert and swipe the card in an electronic slot on the wall in order put them on automatically. The temperature outside was below 3 degrees and I felt too big to go down again the second time because of the trepidation of being labeled a ‘villager’. I had to wither that storm for hours till a Good Samaritan opposite my room came to bail me out.

After a long journey, a typical human would want to have a shower na so I waka go bathroom sorry washroom hehehehehe. I ran the shower but, the water be like ice-water so I had to sleep like that without having my bath. Next day, I ran the tap, same cold water. To cut the long story short sha, I practically didn’t have my bath for two days till a German flat mate arrived and I stylishly asked for his help. I was so happy that I spent almost an hour in the washroom. I remembered the first two weeks, each time I wake up I go rush pick my cloths go iron thinking of nepa hahahahha. Even till now, I still dey hold my bb charger around subconsciously.

The hotel offers free breakfast so I walked into the dining room the first day different stuffs they called "food" were lined up. As omo naija now I'm not familiar with any of the food so I picked something wey be like buns but he no sweet at all!! I lost some pounds within these few days of arrival as I wasn’t eating well because I hate their food! I went to a nearby eatery and told the lady I want chips and chicken, she dey talk excuse me what do you want, I repeated myself severally I just look up and point number 9….she laughed hard and said it is fries and wings hehehehehe that’s what they call chicken and chips hahahah I just asked for washroom na dia I take enter ghost mode hahahahahaha..

I went to the reception and asked for directions to school from the hotel so I could proceed with registration ishhh. They suggested I use a cab since I be JJC. So I asked the cabman how much he told me the counter will decided ... o boy as the journey progress my mind no rest... I just dey watch as the couter dey count... as e dey move I dey automatically convert am to naira kai... We con jamb small go slow. Mehn I begin dey sweat after he knak me bill for that trip. Now to locate buildings in the school na war. I approached people with the expectations of go straight, turn right turn left naija things now o boiiii na map guys dey show me o….I was like wharris is this nahuh hahahaha. After searching for an hour despite the map, I was able to locate where I was going. The thing be like ultimate search for my face.

I remembered opening their doors here….hahahahahahahaha I had to watch people do that severally. There was hardly a time I got to my department without getting lost inside the building. I remembered entering through the normal entrance and getting out via underground tunnel hahahahahahha. On that same day I was thirsty and I wanted to get a drink from one of the refrigerators in the school I was looking for the sales girl...until I discovered it was automatic, I put two dollar in the machine expecting change na so I wait tire. I con bone the change commot... jare.

My first time in their big buses ehn, I stylishly checked where people are placing their bus pass so entering was easier. The problem was alighting, I have been looking at everyone in the bus, nobody said a thing or raised a finger unlike naija wey pple go just dey shout from the back seat Owa, Owa!!!. I almost called the driver to tell her that I'll be alighting at the next bus-stop then I discovered a wire at the right upper end of my seat, I don't even know what the wire stands for, maybe it's for emergency or anything.. I just draw the thing and something signaled to the driver that there is a passenger who wishes to alight at the next bus-stop. Next thing I know was that the bus stopped... My first week here ehn I tried crossing the road not knowing that I have to follow the zebra crossing or move close to the traffic light and press the ‘magic’ button on the traffic light to stop the cars while I catwalk to the other side of the road. I just wan cross from any angle like Naija wey u go just cross from anywhere, thank God say those big bus no jam me!.

Whenever I am at the mall, I always had my Google search opened and pointed to "Convert CAD to NGN". After I don buy things and about to checking-out, I pay expecting them to help me pack my stuffs inside nylon like they do in shoprite o boi na OYO things. One last thing I remembered hahahahhaha I wanted to collect a Professor’s bag like we do in Nigeria helping the elders carry their bags na so some of them wont mark our faces for ‘C’ or outright ‘F’ grade for not carrying dia bags hehehehe. The man probably thought I wanted to steal his bag or maybe I was crazy sef hahahahahhahaha. I can’t wait to see first timers do some of these things in fall. No be small thing o.

Conclusively, it’s been exciting, and educative. I have meet friends like blood here whose counsel kept me waxing stronger. It’s really an experience of a life time and I am grateful to Jah for giving me this chance. As many who want to experience this kain tin for the fun of it or for whatever reason, just trust God cos he makes things beautiful in his time……hehehehheeh between I am no longer a JJC though *tongue out*

Story of Eliezer’s challenge is a familiar one.

Abraham sent Eliezer off with a task, “Find a suitable wife for my son Isaac.” How, though, could Eliezer be secure in the knowledge that the woman he chose would indeed measure up to the standards of the saintly Isaac?

To ensure that he would find the young woman, Eliezer came up with a plan. Hence was born the famous “camel test”: After his long travels, Eliezer would ask a young maiden for a sip of water, and if she offered to provide water for his camels as well, she would be the one!

When Eliezer and his men arrived at the well, they had with them many camels, so they’d be able to escort the future bride and all her possessions and servants back to Isaac. Surrounded by a group of able-bodied men, Eliezer did not appear as a helpless, weary chap begging for a drink. And Rebecca, the daughter of Bethuel, the ruler of Aram Naharaim, was a young woman of nobility, not a poor servant girl accustomed to lugging water from wells. But this is precisely where Eliezer was able to get a glimpse of the righteous Rebecca.

From the moment he requested to take a sip from her jug, her generosity and greatness radiated in the most discreet and unassuming manner.

Rebecca immediately gave him a drink, then offered and drew water for all his camels. She saw an opportunity to do something kind, and swiftly went to work. She didn’t question or consider whether she was really needed; instead, she energetically continued filling multiple troughs with water, until the job of satisfying a whole herd of thirsty camels was completed . . . while Eliezer and his men watched her work unassisted.

Many ladies are still unmarried today cos they don't give. they don't add value to the lives of men. Rebecca was a value adding woman, She was more conscious of what she can give than the other way round. Even when Eliezer didn't look helpless, She offered to GIVE him Value. Not just that, She satisfied the whole herd of thirty camels with water too.

Many ladies today have so believed that they are meant to receive and never give. They get into relationships with the mindset of what they can get. Rebecca was not that kind of woman.

As a woman think of adding value. When you meet a man, do something positive in his life, don't be in a hurry to gain.

Be selfless, You never can tell who he is. Isaac was the son of a great man, Abraham, He had abundance. But Rebecca was a poor decent girl. She was highly favoured.

What can you give? Isaac married Rebecca Cos she passed the test of 'Giving value'
What can you give?

Nigerian Ladies, be the Rebecca of your time.

Jonathan conceded defeat at the polls, hundreds and possible thousands of lives were spared the violence that usually follows such power-dragging antics, which is mostly the norm this side. We hailed him for it, we called him a hero. We praised him tire.

The Buharists and APCists went: Nonsense, what's the big deal? You guys are lame. He did what he was supposed to do and dazzoll! .

Under Buhari, fuel scarcity like never known in a long while hit Nigeria a uppercut. Buhari chose to travel. The Nigerian Army went on rampage. Buhari said, make I sokogu small go Malta. Boko Haram brought hell and ran riot. Buhari chose to travel.

Now, after so so long a silence in which his shit-for-brains reps fed us all sorts of lies and blame-shifting nonsense, Buhari came out yesterday and said ' I am sorry' for the fuel scarcity under his watch.

And the Nigerian internet broke. Chants of 'Sai Saviour' replaced 'sai Baba' professor Adesanmi the chief mocker of GEJ's hero status dedicated a praise-singing article in his honour. Apcists and Buharists did skelewu on top of 'I am sorry' wey no go even solve 1 percent of the issue on ground. Even me sef, I clapped for him. Until the implication of what he apologised for hit me then I stopped.

Buhari apologised for fuel scarcity. Did he apologise for the actions of his military? Did he apologise for the thousands of Boko Haram dead? Did he apologise for his unfulfilled promise to crush terrorism? Did he apologise for treating Biafrans like nothing and the heavy-handedness of his army towards unarmed protesters? Did he apologise for so many campaign promises unfulfilled and castaway? Did he apologise for the chaos that is the Nigerian economy? Did he apologise for the Lie of his Lai muthafuking Muhammed? Did he apologise for the freefalling Naira that he promised to make at par with the dollar? Did he apologise for touring the world while his country boils? Did he apologise for his own silence towards his people in critical matters where words of reassurance were vital? Did he apologise for keeping us waiting for countless months while he prepared a table of angelic ministers before us in the presence of both wailers and Hailers and liars and thieves?

Yet they are hailing him like he has just found the cure to K-leg disease. They are heroizing him even though nobody will die if he didn't say sorry unlike under GEJ where northerners will lead the violence if GEJ no gree step down( thunder fire you in advance if you wan come deny dis wan). He said sorry to soften the alarming news he will be borrowing like 8 billion dollars to fund the budget and they are not one bit nervous about it. What nonsense.

PoliticsBoko Haram: More British Troops Coming – UK, 16 Killed In Borno Explosions by cuvox(op): 5:57am On Dec 22, 2015
Nigeria’s effort to rout Boko Haram received a boost yesterday when the United Kingdom announced it would increase its military backing to combat the insurgents.

Already, Britain has 130 troops on ground. But during a visit to the Presidential Villa in Abuja yesterday, Defence Secretary Michael Fallon said Britain will increase the number of its troops to 300 next year, explaining that London “stand united with Nigeria in its effort to defeat the militants.

“For this year, for example, we have about 130 military personnel here. Next year, more than 300 are coming to offer training and particularly improve the Army’s resilience to Improvised Explosive Devices,” he said.

Fallon had met with President Muhammadu Buhari and Defence Minister Dan Ali to discuss Nigeria’s security challenges and the status of the bilateral UK-Nigeria defence relationship.

In a statement issued after the meeting, the spokesperson of the British High Commission, Abuja, Mr Joe Abugu, said, “the deployment of the new teams and expanding the package of UK assistance builds on the programme of Short Term Training Teams (STTT), many from the 2nd Battalion, the Royal Anglian Regiment, providing assistance to our Nigerian partners throughout 2015.”

Abugu said: “The training uplift announced by Fallon supports work already carried out by the UK’s resident British Military Advisory and Training Team (BMATT).

BMATT has also grown in size since the government announced last year that the UK would increase its training and capacity building in Nigeria, the statement said. Almost 1,000 Nigerian soldiers benefited from the training to prepare them for counter-insurgency operations in Boko Haram held areas.

These have included, training in infantry skills, civil-military affairs, media operations, command and leadership, IED-awareness, and support to Nigerian military training schools and establishments.

“Together with our continued support to a Nigerian intelligence and analysis cell focused on the North-East and based in Abuja, almost 30 UK military personnel are now deployed in Nigeria on an enduring basis in training and advisory roles,” the statement added.

meanwhile,
Eleven people were killed when three female suicide bombers attacked Benisheik town, in Borno State on Monday, a vigilante source told SaharaReporters.

Also, the police in Gombe State said three policemen and two civilians were killed during an attack on Triacta Construction Company’s quarters by gunmen in Buba Shango area of Gombe metropolis.

The Gombe State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Fwaje Atajiri, confirmed the attack while speaking with newsmen in Gombe on Monday.

He said the incident occurred on Saturday night and investigation into the matter had commenced.

“For now, we are not going to pre-empt the investigators, we are waiting for them to carry out their duties to a logical conclusion and we will let you know their findings later,” he said.

PoliticsGunmen Kidnap Jonathan’s Cousin, Otazi (Mrs) by cuvox(op): 7:19am On Dec 21, 2015
LESS than 24 hours after four armed gunmen kidnapped Governor Henry Seriake Dickson’s sister, Nancy Kemerovo Dickson, another set of armed men have abducted cousin to former President Goodluck Jonathan.

She is the Commissioner for Local Government in Dickson’s government.

Investigations indicated that the woman, identified only as Mrs Otazi, was kidnapped in Ewoi community, Ogbia Local Government area of Bayelsa State.

The gunmen were said to have stormed the community Sunday afternoon and went for their target.

Police Public Relations Office (PPRO) of Bayelsa State police command, Mr Ansim Butwats who confirmed the incident, however, said police are investigating the matter to know the identity of the woman.

A top security source said Mrs Otazi is Jonathan’s relative and that security operatives are already investigating the incident.

Meanwhile, Twon Brass has been thrown into mourning following the death of a business woman and hotelier, Mrs Mudilyn Soukipreye Debo in the hands of kidnappers over the weekend.

The deceased who owns one of the big hotels in the coastal community, Miti- Soki hotel was strangled to death by the kidnappers when their efforts to whisk her away was being frustrated.

BusinessEmefiele Promises Stable Naira In 2016 by cuvox(op): 7:13am On Dec 21, 2015
CENTRAL Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Godwin Emefeile said at the weekend that the apex bank is evolving additional measures to boost the economy and stabilise the naira.

Emefeile spoke during an interactive session with some editors in Abuja. He, however, declined to give details of the measures and modalities for their implementation

“Don’t ask me because I will not disclose our strategy for now,’’ adding that doing so would be counter-productive and pre-emptive.

The CBN boss explained that the economy was not as bad as being portrayed when compared with other economies in Africa.

He advised importers to restrict their imports to raw materials and equipment rather than finished products and food to reduce the pressure on the nation’s scarce foreign exchange.

“CBN will soon start a nationwide campaign to sensitise Nigerians to items excluded from importation.

“This is part of efforts to save more foreign exchange and stabilise the nation’s currency. The solution to free-fall of the naira is by controlling the demand for foreign currencies such as the dollar.

“If we are able to reduce importation, the demand for the dollar will fall automatically.’’

Emefiele said the country should go back to the farm to produce what is needed.

“Public servants should also engage in farming because the only business public servants are allowed to engage in is farming. And you don’t need power to farm tomato, vegetables or fish,’’ Emefeile said and blamed unscrupulous businessmen who engaged in illicit activities for exerting pressure on the dollar and other currencies.

He said the apex bank had ensured reasonable naira stability by keeping official exchange to the dollar between N196 and N197.

“CBN does not have plenty dollars to sustain the bureau de change,’’ he stressed.

The CBN boss, however, insisted that the 22 per cent depreciation of the naira was reasonable when compared with other emerging economies adversely affected by global economic recession.

.“Our situation is not as bad as people think.

“When you devalue, there must be structural adjustment. We have never followed up with structural adjustment.

‘’So, the approach we are adopting at the moment is that, having done a 22-per cent adjustment in the currency, let us structurally adjust our position.

‘’Let us say, look, stop importing rice; stop importing toothpick; stop importing tomato from South Africa; stop importing 20 million eggs daily from Africa.

“We are saying Nigeria can do without these items. And the truth is that the reserves are no longer there.”
