PoliticsBoko Haram: Suleja Bombing Suspects Get Bail by cycline404(op): 6:24pm On Jan 19, 2012
An Abuja Federal High Court yesterday granted bail to six persons alleged to have participated in the bombing which claimed several lives at the office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on April 8, 2011 and at a political rally on March 3 2011 in Suleja, Niger State.
Shuaibu Abubakar, Salisu Ahmed, Umar Babagana, Mohammed Ali, Musa Adamu and Umar Ibrahim are standing trial on a five-count charge of terrorism.

They are alleged to have caused the death of several persons at the INEC office in Suleja and Dakna Village in Bwari through the use of an improvised explosive device on March 3 and May 23, 2011.

They are also accused of encouraging terrorism by training persons in the use of arms and ammunition at various locations in Suleja, Azara, Nasarawa State and the Federal Capital Territory.

The offenses are contrary to Section 15 (2) of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission Establishment Act 2004 which stipulates a life sentence upon conviction.

The accused persons were granted bail in the sum of N2 million each with one surety each in like sum.

The surety must be a civil servant working with the Federal Government or the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) not below grade level 12, must be resident in the FCT, and his status must be verified by the prosecuting authorities.

They are to remain in Kuje prisons until their bail conditions are met.

It will be recalled that two of the accused persons last year denied authorship of statements sought to be tendered as evidence by the State Security Services (SSS).

One of them, who spoke in Hausa through an interpreter, said he was taken to the third floor at the SSS office where a statement was brought before him and he was made to sign under duress.

A witness, Alhassan Iliyasu, who is an SSS investigator had told the court that he obtained two statements each from Musa Adamu, Salisu Ahmed and Umar Ibrahim and that he took the statement in English but translated to Hausa.

But Ahmed, through his Counsel Nuraini Suleiman, denied making the statement dated August 9, 2011.

Justice Bilkisu Aliyu adjourned till February 7 and 8 at the instance of Prosecuting Counsel Thompson Olatigbe.

PoliticsMoney Tears Apart Pro-subsidy Removal Protesters ---- Ignorance Or Poverty by cycline404(op): 10:46pm On Jan 06, 2012
There was a mild scuffle today among pro-subsidy removal protesters over “settlement” allowance at the Labour House, headquarters of the Nigeria Labour Congress.

The group of women who stormed the Labour House in colorful T-shirts and baseball caps proclaiming their support for the subsidy removal also displayed colourful banners bidding subsidy farewell.

Some of the banners read “Subsidy, bye-bye. No vex”, “Please Lets endure with Mr President”, “there must be a sacrifice for Nigeria to move forward”.

But the tune changed when it was time for them to be paid and the organizers of the protest began to count the participants for payment.

But some of the participants were not happy with the pay alleging that the man that took them there wanted to cheat them.

A group of Gbagi women wearing branded shirts with “Women for Subsidy” printed on their backs who were sourced from the Mabushi area of the Federal Capital Territory were seen protesting that they were hired for N1,500 but were only given N1,000 to join the protest.

In their dispute over money, they threatened to burn down the car of their leader who boasted that even if they did, he would still buy another one from the funds giving to him to mobilise them.

One of them said “imagine this guy taking us for fools after collecting money and bringing us here to shout under this hot sun. I have not eaten since morning and this guy wants to use my head here.”

Another youth from the protesters who were obviously educated from their speech and carriage said “they are not even lucky we are here working against our will for them; they also want to play with us. They should share that money and let us get out of here.”

However things got to a head when shirts were pulled and trousers were adjusted in preparation for battle over the sharing formula until someone intervened and pleaded that everyone will get his own share.

Majority of the youths who were over a hundred left grumbling and dejected while those who remained to collect their “share” were left stranded when the organisers zoomed away in two vehicles.

On the part of the women who were contracted by a female lawyer, they left cursing and swearing when N500 balance of the promised them was not given to them.
