Nigeria switched to a 3-5-2 formation for the 2-0 win against Iceland, and could name an unchanged line-up. Left wing-back Bryan Idowu was replaced by Tyronne Ebuehi at half-time in what appeared a tactical substitution, so it remains to be seen which player starts. After using a 4-2-3-1 formation against Iceland and a 3-4-3 versus Croatia, Argentina are expected to change once again, with a 4-3-3 or 4-4-2 expected. Goalkeeper Willy Caballero is set to be dropped after his error versus Croatia. He is likely to be replaced by the uncapped Franco Armani, who has impressed since joining River Plate earlier this year. Angel Di Maria and Ever Banega are in contention for recalls, while Gonzalo Higuain could replace Sergio Aguero up front. Despite a disastrous campaign so far, there is still hope for winless Argentina. Permutations permitting, there is a good chance that three points versus Nigeria will send them through - and the Argentines have never completed a first round group stage at a World Cup without at least one victory. The only time they returned home without a win came in a pure knock-out format in 1934; a squad comprising only amateurs spent over a month at sea only to lose 3-2 to Sweden in the first round and bow out. Should the current team be eliminated in St Petersburg, there would be plenty of Argentina fans happy to see the team and under-fire coach, Jorge Sampaoli put on the slow boat back to Buenos Aires. Unlike Argentina, Nigeria's switch to a back three paid off in their last game, a 2-0 win versus Iceland, and another victory would send them through. Opinion from both camps Argentina midfielder Javier Mascherano "The relationship with [head coach Jorge] Sampaoli is totally normal, but if we feel uncomfortable, we will raise it, otherwise we would be hypocrites. "The opposite would be to harm the team, we must seek the collective benefit, and we are 23, also those of the squad. We are not playing well and we take charge of the results." Nigeria coach Gernot Rohr: "I thought before this World Cup we were here to learn. I think this team will be ready in 2022 and this World Cup is coming early, but we have a good chance to win against Argentina." Head-to-head In the last four World Cups Nigeria have qualified for (2002, 2010, 2014 and 2018) they have been drawn in the same group as Argentina. They were also in the same group in 1994. The Super Eagles have lost all four of their previous World Cup games against Argentina, with all of those defeats by single-goal margins (1-0 in 2002 and 2010, 2-1 in 1994, 3-2 in 2014). The Nigerians lost a group game to Paraguay at the 1998 tournament, so have been defeated in all five of their World Cup matches versus South American opposition. Nigeria Nigeria's six World Cup wins have all come against European sides - they have never beaten opposition from another continent. The only previous time the Super Eagles won back-to-back World Cup games was in 1998, when they defeated Spain and Bulgaria in their first two matches. Victory would ensure Nigeria reach the knock-out stage for a second successive World Cup, and for the fourth time in six appearances overall. Ahmed Musa is Nigeria's all-time top scorer at the World Cup with four goals - two against Iceland at this tournament, and two versus Argentina in 2014. Argentina The only previous time Argentina have failed to win a game at a World Cup was in 1934, when the tournament was a straight knock-out. They selected an inexperienced, amateur squad, and lost 3-2 to Sweden in the first round. They have never completed a first round group stage at a World Cup without at least one win. The Argentines are enduring their longest winless run in World Cup history (D2, L2), although that four-match streak includes the 2014 semi-final against the Dutch, which they won on penalties. They last lost back-to-back World Cup games in 1994 (against Bulgaria and Romania). They have never lost consecutive games in the opening group stage. Lionel Messi has failed to score with his last 22 shots in matches at World Cup finals. But over the last two years he has scored 14 goals in 18 games for Argentina. www.dabbsports.com

The Nigerian Football Federation (formerly known as Nigerian Football Association until 2008) is Nigerian’s football governing body. It was formerly launched in 1945 and formed the first Nigerian national football team in 1949. It joined CAF in 1959 and FIFA in 1960. The NFF headquarters is located in the city of Abuja. The NFF and Amaju Pinnick – The incumbent NFF president Amaju Pinnick took over the reins at the ‘Glasshouse’ from Aminu Maigari in 2014 in an election that was said to be marred by high level electoral irregularities. The new government took full charge and work began. Despite improvement in some areas in the growth of football in the country, there are really grey areas the federation president and the federation in its entirety have not taken the right decisions. Pinnick spearheaded and endorsed the appointment of the Franco-German coach, Gernot Rohr, as the head coach of the Super Eagles. Gernot Rohr was unveiled at the Glasshouse amid fanfare and glamour; the team qualified for the 2018 World Cup billed for Russia before the last group game. It was indeed a welcome development as people gave accolades to the team and the tactician for the qualification, but the big question is, ‘have we not gone beyond the level of jubilating out of proportion just for the world cup qualification? And in the wave of the moment, the NFF president Amaju Pinnick presumably made a terrible blunder; Gernot Rohr was given a contract extension even before the team kicked a ball at the soccer mundial. NFF Technical Committee – The technical committee of the NFF is one very sensitive organ of the federation, or is supposedly perceived to be so. And with the likes of the technical committee chairman Ahmed Fresh, Fanny Amun, Victor Ikpeba, Mutiu Adepoju and other notably names not mentioned, one is of the opinion that the committee should have things going smoothly for the various tires of the country’s national teams. In February 2018, the NFF leadership was accused of having sidelined the technical committee in the appointment of coaches for the U-17, U-20, U-23 national teams respectively. A member of the technical committee, former international Garba Lawal accused Coach Gernot Rohr of not consulting the committee before his announcement of the 30-man provisional World Cup list. This abysmal and unending fiasco at the glasshouse will surely plunge millions of the soccer loving and patriotic Nigerians in a terrible mood due to their ongoing poor showing at the soccer mundial in Russia, but is this coming as a surprise? The tune up games to the World Cup ushered in poor string of results – losing 3 friendly games, a narrow win against Poland and a draw against Congo DR. Gernot Rohr – The Franco-German born tactician was the coach of fellow African side, Burkina Faso before being employed by the NFF. His stint at both Burkina Faso and Niger were brief, having handled and presented just five games in charge of the Burkinabes. One wonders the rationale used by the NFF cum technical committee to have him as the preferred choice. Gernot Rohr’s unending formation change (from 4-2-3-1; 4-3-3 and 3-5-2 ) is an indicator of the team’s inability to have a definite playing style or pattern. His choice of options led to the defeat to Serbia and England, annoyingly against Croatia in Russia in the group D opener. The formation (4-2-3-1) against Croatia and his positioning of players as well as his tactical onus brought forth a devastating and heartbreaking result as millions of Nigerians lambasted the team for its poor showing. Cohesion lacked in the game, with some players played out of position, no urgency in the game, making one wonder the tactical plan of the Franco-German. What were the reasons for the exclusion of the likes of Kelechi Nwakali, Henry Onyekuru and Junior Lokosa if he has an eye to build a team for the future? Why was Lokosa played from the wing against Congo DR when he is a striker; wasn’t it prejudice at its peak exemplified by the coach to ensure the home-based lad doesn’t perform well? This also bring to the fore the level of commitment and the visionary plans of Rohr on developing our football vis-à-vis the national team and returning it to its once place of pride among the League of Nations? Dabblesports is of the opinion that the NFF made an error on the coach’s contract extension of the Franco-German prior to the World Cup. The fact is should the Super Eagles exit the tournament in the group stage and the pressure by Nigerians lead to the coach’s sack, the NFF will have to pay a certain sum which certainly a ‘clause’ embedded in the contract term; a wastage indeed that will be. When will our soccer administrators ever get it right? source:www.dabbsports.com

The battle in Group D resumes today as current group topper Croatia face Argentina in the ongoing Fifa World Cup taking place in Russia. Croatia, who will reach the last 16 with a win, go into the game without Nikola Kalinic. The striker was sent home after refusing to come on as a substitute against Nigeria, citing a back problem. The Croats didn't field a recognised defensive midfielder in their opening game, and must decide whether to stick with that adventurous line-up. Argentina coach Jorge Sampaoli is reportedly considering abandoning the 4-2-3-1 formation used against Iceland in favour of a 3-4-3 system. Boca Juniors winger Cristian Pavon could start his first competitive game, while Gabriel Mercado and Marcos Acuna may also earn recalls. Argentina's 1-1 draw with Iceland followed a familiar script; a painful struggle to break down opponents who sit deep, plus costly defensive errors. It was their qualification campaign in microcosm - and while they eventually booked their place in Russia thanks to Lionel Messi's hat-trick in Ecuador, this time the great man's aim was wayward. Messi had 11 shots at goal in the opening game (including a penalty), the most by a player at a World Cup without scoring since 1974. Croatia didn't need to be at their best to beat Nigeria 2-0, and only registered their first shot on target from open play in the 92nd minute. The Croats are hoping to win back-to-back World Cup games for the first time since their brilliant debut campaign in 1998. They boast a star-studded midfield more than capable of going toe-to-toe with the Argentines, and know that a win will book their place in the knockout stage. What the coaches say - Argentina defender Gabriel Mercado: "This is a vital game. We need to win to go ahead of them. "We know that Croatia has those two players in the centre (Luka Modric and Ivan Rakitic) who have good control of the ball. They try to take a lead role too and they have other very good players." Croatia coach Zlatko Dalic: "There is no perfect way to stop Lionel Messi ... he is the greatest player in the world. "But while one excellent player can make a great result, a great team does the job much better ... We will go into the game a little bit more relaxed than them." Head-to-head Their four previous meetings have produced two wins for Argentina, one Croatian victory and a draw. The only encounter at a World Cup came in the group stage at the 1998 World Cup. Both sides were already through to the last 16, but Argentina's 1-0 win - secured by a Mauricio Pineda goal - ensured they topped the group. Argentina The last time Argentina failed to win either of their first two World Cup games was in 1974. Their only defeat in their last 16 group games is the 1-0 loss to England in 2002 (W12, D3). They have scored more than once in just two of their last 10 competitive games, netting nine times in total during that run. Argentina had the worst shot conversion rate in South American qualifying (8.1%). Sergio Aguero has scored in each of his last four appearances for Argentina. Lionel Messi has failed to score with his last 21 shots in matches at World Cup finals. But over the last two years he has scored 14 goals in 17 games for Argentina, including six in his last four games (hat-tricks against Ecuador and Haiti). Croatia Victory would see the Croats win back-to-back World Cup games for the first time since 1998. Croatia have never lost their second group game at a World Cup (W3, D1), conceding just one goal in four matches - in a 2-1 victory against Italy in 2002. The Croats have lost all four of their World Cup games against South American opposition (three defeats versus Brazil and one against Argentina). Despite beating Nigeria 2-0 in their opening match, Croatia didn't register a shot on target from open play until the 92nd minute. Luka Modric's 71st minute penalty was their first shot on target. Vedran Corluka, who was an unused substitute against Nigeria, could win his 100th cap. www.dabbsports.com

Sweden and South Korea meet in a World Cup for the first time on Monday when they begin their campaigns in Russia. The Europeans have a fully fit squad to choose from but have only scored one goal in four games and none in their past three matches. South Korea will be captained by former Swansea City midfielder Ki Sung-yueng, while Tottenham forward Son Heung-min is one of their main players. World champions Germany and Mexico are the other two teams in Group F. This match will take place in Nizhny Novgorod and there are reports that less than 2,000 fans have travelled from South Korea to Russia, while more than 30,000 Swedish fans have travelled to the tournament. MATCH PREVIEW Sweden are back at a World Cup finals for the first time since 2006 after beating Italy 1-0 on aggregate in their two-legged play-off. Their World Cup squad includes six British-based players - Swansea goalkeeper c, Manchester United centre-half Victor Lindelof, Celtic defender Mikael Lustig, Leeds centre-half Pontus Jansson, Swansea left-back Martin Olsson and Hull midfielder Sebastian Larsson. However, ex-Manchester United striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic is not in the squad, sticking to his decision to retire from international football following Euro 2016. South Korea will be playing in their ninth successive World Cup finals and will be hoping to do better than four years ago when they finished bottom of their group with only one point (a 1-1 draw against Russia) from their three matches. They only won four of 10 qualifying games in the third round of Asian qualification and needed a 0-0 draw away in Uzbekistan in their final match to secure their place in Russia. Not in the best of form, they have only won one of their last six matches, including a 2-1 loss to Northern Ireland in March. VIEWS FROM BOTH CAMPS Sweden manager Janne Andersson said: "We are looking forward to this match against a tough opponent. We know they have technical skills, are a very fast team and we need to keep good order in everything we do. "We are very happy with our performance so far in preparation. Twenty five days ago we all met up and we have able to work through various things and have seen very few injuries. "I have made up mind (with the team) and I hope we do not have any last-minute events before the game. It will be the team that will give us the best position for winning, but we are all well prepared. "We have not been able to create as much in the last few games but we have had very good opponents. We have been working more on our attacking game over the last few days." South Korea coach Shin Tae-yong said: "We do not know each other that well, but we are really ready for the game tomorrow and we have to win. "Some people are saying the (Korean) fans are showing us the cold shoulder but we are doing everything we can to win. The fans in Korea are sending us their support. Captain Ki Sung-yueng said: "I know this will be a very good game for our fans and I hope we will have a good result. "I really want the players to enjoy the game and take advantage of this opportunity - it will be a very important experience in their lives. "It is good that there will be a lot of people there, whether they are Swedish or Korean, it does not matter. The players have a lot of experience and it will be great if we have a full stadium. "We have quite a lot of players who have experience of playing at a World Cup and that is strength for us and all the players are fully prepared." source: www.dabbsports.com

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola "often has problems with Africans", says ex Man City midfielder Yaya Toure. The Ivorian star, who left City last month after eight successful years at the club, says he wants to "break the myth" about Guardiola, whom he describes as "jealous". "Maybe we Africans are not always treated by some in the same way as others," said Toure while in an interview with France football. Premier League champions City have declined to comment on Toure's views with regards the Spanish tactician. Before his departure, the club named one of their training pitches after him and unveiled a mosaic of him at their training complex. This summer they are set to bring to the Etihad France-born Algeria international Riyad Mahrez from Leicester City. Toure, played for Guardiola at Barcelona for two seasons before he was sold to Manchester City in 2010 for £24m. The midfielder won six major trophies in England but started just one Premier League game in City's latest title-winning campaign - their final home fixture of the season against Brighton. Prior to that game, Guardiola said: "Yaya came here at the start of the journey. Where we are now is because of what he has done. "The Brighton game we will give him what he deserves, one of the most beautiful farewell a player can receive." Toure completed 86 minutes against Brighton, having featured for 142 minutes in the league prior to that this season. He believes that was "not down to physics", saying he sought data from the club's trainers to compare himself to younger players. Guardiola won six league titles as a player at Barcelona and has added a further seven as a manager during spells with the Catalan club, Bayern Munich and City. Toure said: "I do not know why but I have the impression that he was jealous, he took me for a rival; as if I made him a little shade. "He was cruel to me. I came to wonder if it was not because of my colour. "I am not the first to talk about these differences in treatment. In Barca, some have also asked the question. "When we realise he often has problems with Africans wherever he goes, I ask myself questions. "I want to be the one who breaks the myth of Guardiola." Toure started 22 league games under Guardiola in the 2016-17 season, and says he was asked to stay for another year, but then used sparingly. Despite all these, he imprinted his name on the sands of time at the Etihad and the Premier League and will always be remembered as one of the Premier greats. www.dabbsports.com

Barcelona legend Andres Iniesta said he dismissed offers from elsewhere to join Vissel Kobe because they showed they had "trust and confidence" in him. The 34-year-old completed his move to the Japanese top-flight side after leaving Barca, where he spent 22 years. "I had a lot of offers, other clubs showed an interest in me," said the Spain international, who is reported to be on a $30m (£22.39m) annual salary. "I chose Vissel Kobe because it was an interesting project." He added: "There was also a lot of trust and confidence in me as a person and also as a player - that was a big reason." Kobe owner Hiroshi Mikitani said Iniesta help the next generation of players. He said: "I am confident Iniesta's philosophy, leadership and DNA will be a terrific inspiration, not only for Kobe but Japanese football society." Mikitani added: "We look forward to Iniesta not only strengthening the team's performance but also contributing to the development of the next generation of players through the introduction of the Iniesta methodology to the youth academy. "We believe his decision to come to Japan will have a major impact, not just on Vissel Kobe, but on football in Japan and Asia." Iniesta won 32 trophies at Barcelona, where he made 674 senior appearances; having joined the youth set-up aged 12. His last game for the club came in Sunday's La Liga win over Real Sociedad. The Spain international tweeted he was going to his "new home" on Wednesday and he will now join former Arsenal and Germany forward Lukas Podolski at Kobe. Iniesta will wear the number eight shirt, with his new side sixth in the J-League after 15 games, having finished ninth last season. Mikitani added: "Iniesta will raise the profile of Japanese football globally and we are working on activities to leverage his presence here and promote the J-League worldwide. "I am very proud to see this day come. We will do everything in our power to support Iniesta during his time in Japan and show us all his beautiful, inspiring play." Iniesta, who scored the winning goal in the 2010 World Cup final against the Netherlands, has been selected for Spain's squad for next month's tournament in Russia. www.dabbsports.com

Brighton have signed Nigeria international defender Leon Balogun. The 29-year-old joins from Bundesliga side Mainz on a free transfer and is the Premier League club's first signing of the summer. Brighton manager Chris Hughton said: "I am delighted to welcome Leon to the club. He will add more depth to our defensive options, and I am pleased to get our first piece of business done so early in the summer. "He is in the peak years of his career and I am sure he will integrate well into the squad. "He also has valuable experience, having played in the Bundesliga, the Europa League and at international level." The 6ft 3in Berlin-born defender has played for Hannover and Werder Bremen. He joined Mainz in July 2015 where he made 58 appearances. Balogun has played for Nigeria 14 times and is eligible to play for them through his father. He has very often than not partnered in the heart of the Super Eagles defence with fellow team mate Troost Ekong with the duo’s central defence nick named ‘Oyibo Wall’. The move is indeed a plausible one for the centre back whose move to the most publicized league in the world will usher him more popularity. He missed out on the 2014 World Cup in Brazil because of injury but he has been named in the preliminary 30-man squad for this year's tournament after helping them to qualify. www.dabbsports.com

West Ham have appointed one of the world's "most respected" football coaches in Manuel Pellegrini, according to joint chairman David Sullivan. Pellegrini, 64, has signed a three-year deal at the London Stadium to see West Ham vie for honours. The former Manchester City and Real Madrid manager left his job with Hebei China Fortune over the weekend and succeeds David Moyes. "Manuel brings a reputation for attacking football and getting the best out of his players," said Sullivan. "We believe he will attract new talent to the London Stadium as well as improving the current squad. "Above all, he is a winner, who knows what it takes to succeed at the highest level and is driven to continue that success. Manuel is the first West Ham United manager to have a Premier League title on his CV, and we believe that his experience, quality and proven record of taking teams forward quickly will ensure that he is successful here." Chilean Pellegrini, who had been a priority target from the start of West Ham's search for a new manager, will be joined at London Stadium by assistant Ruben Cousillas. He replaces former Everton and Manchester United manager Moyes, who was appointed West Ham boss in November 2017 but released at the end of his contract after guiding West Ham to 13th place. West Ham had explored the possibility of hiring Newcastle United manager Rafael Benitez, however they quickly concluded it would be hugely difficult for the Spaniard to leave St James' Park. Pellegrini, who was on a huge contract in China, has agreed to take a pay cut but it is anticipated he will become the highest paid manager in West Ham's history. Sullivan had previously said he intended to hire someone who had experience at the highest level. He will hope Pellegrini, who won the 2013-14 Premier League title and two EFL Cups during his three years at Manchester City, in addition to qualifying the club for the Champions League semi-finals for the only time in their history, can bring some stability to West Ham. The club have experienced huge problems during their first two seasons after leaving their legendary home at Upton Park. They won just seven home Premier League games in the 2017/18 season, a campaign which was marred by crowd trouble at London Stadium. It will be recalled that five fans were banned for life by the club for running on to the pitch during their home fixture with Burnley on 10 March. Other fans were also banned for life for throwing coins or objects "with intent to injure or harm". The appointment of Manuel Pellegrini hopefully will see West Ham have a far better season by August and an exciting football is what we hope to see. www.dabbsports.com

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho says their season will not be judged on the outcome of Saturday's FA Cup final. United finished second in the Premier League - their highest placing since the 2012-13 season - but will be without silverware this season if they fail to defeat final opponents Chelsea. "I'm not going to change my analysis of the season because of one match," Mourinho said in a news conference on Friday. "You can analyze the way you want to." The former Blues manager has won 12 cup competitions during his club career. And in his first season in charge at Old Trafford, Mourinho guided United to two finals, the Europa League and League Cup, winning both. However, the United boss said his record was irrelevant going into the Wembley encounter. "I think the winning mentality doesn't have to do with records or history in finals," he added. "I honestly think what we did in the past has nothing to do with tomorrow and the records don't matter. What matters is 11 against 11 and everybody trying to give their best." Contests between the two finalists have been tight in recent years with only three or more goals scored on three occasions in the past 13 meetings. When asked whether Saturday's clash will be an open game, Mourinho said: "I still don't understand these words of 'entertaining'. You think 6-0 is entertaining? I don't think so. "I think entertaining is emotion until the end, it's the open result until the end, it's everybody on their seats until the end. Both dugouts nervous and tense with the unpredictability of the result - that for me as a football lover is entertaining, so I think so it's going to be entertaining." www.dabbsports.com

Italy goalkeeper and Juventus captain Gianluigi Buffon will play his final game for Juventus on Saturday after 17 years with the club. Buffon, a World Cup winner will lift his ninth Serie A title against Hellas Verona at the Allianz Stadium. Buffon said he changed his mind about retiring 15 days ago and has received job offers on and off the pitch. "Next week, after two or three days of reflection and serenity, I will take my decision," the goalkeeper stated. Buffon, 40, is facing a Uefa ban with regards comment he made about English referee Michael Oliver, who sent him off during the Champions League quarter-final defeat at the Santiago Bernabeu by Real Madrid last month. Speaking at a news conference on Thursday, he said he was "sorry for offending the referee". "If I saw the referee again, I would give him a hug and say that he should have taken more time with that decision," said Buffon. "With the feelings, emotions and disappointment of the situation, I behaved in a way that was not usual for me. After that match, I went beyond the limits with the things I said about the referee and I apologise for that." Buffon, who joined Juventus from Parma in 2001, has ruled out joining another Italian club, saying he does not want to play in a "minor league" and could take a six-month sabbatical. He said: "Fifteen days ago, I was already an ex-player. Now I'm not sure any more. Proposals have arrived for some new challenges on and off the pitch. The most important off the pitch is from Juventus." Buffon has captained Juventus to a seventh straight Serie A title and fourth consecutive Coppa Italia triumph this season. "Saturday will be my final match for Juventus and to end this journey with two cups and with the president and the entire Bianconeri world by my side, will be very special," added the Italian. Former Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny, who moved to Turin in 2017, will succeed Buffon in goal next season. Buffon, Italy's most capped player with 176 appearances, retired from national team duty after they failed to qualify for the World Cup in November. He said he will not play on 4 June in an international friendly against the Netherlands, adding he will "stay away from the national team". He began his career at Parma, making his Serie A debut on 19 November 1995, aged 17, in a 0-0 draw against Milan. He helped the club win the Uefa Cup and Coppa Italia in 1999, before sealing a move to Juventus in a £23.3m deal in 2001 - at the time a world record for a goalkeeper. In his first two seasons at the club, he won two consecutive league titles and two more followed in 2005 and 2006, but they were later stripped due to a match fixing scandal and the club was sanction and relegated to Serie B. Buffon endeared himself to the fans by staying with the club, winning promotion back to Serie A in 2007. He became club captain following the departure of Alessandro Del Piero in 2012 as Juventus won the first of seven consecutive Serie A titles. Buffon has not won the Champions League,a trophy that has eluded him throughout his football career; losing the 2003 final to AC Milan, in 2014 to Barcelona and in 2017 to Real Madrid. www.dabbsports.com

Lionel Messi says it would be "terrible" if his old team-mate Neymar joined rivals Real Madrid. It will be recalled that Neymar left Barcelona last year to pitch tents with Paris Saint-Germain in a world-record £200m deal and has been tipped for a return to Spain to sign for Madrid this summer. Messi, who played for four seasons alongside Neymar at the Nou Camp, admits he would not like to see the 26-year-old at the Bernabeu. He told TyC Sports: "It would be terrible, because of everything he means to Barcelona. "Ney won important trophies here. He won the Champions League and La Liga. It would be a huge blow for everyone. It would make Real Madrid even stronger from a football point of view." Messi also discussed his own future, insisting that he does not have to leave Barcelona to prove himself. He added: "I am not tempted to leave Barcelona. I will not be better anywhere else; this is the best team in the world. "Every year I fight to win everything. I do not need to go to another team to prove anything." Messi and Neymar will be rivals this summer as Argentina and Brazil chase World Cup glory in Russia. Before that, though, Messi will have to watch on as another rival, Cristiano Ronaldo, tries to win the Champions League for a third year in a row with Real Madrid. Asked about Ronaldo, Messi said: "I don't compete with him. It stimulates me to see Real Madrid again in the Champions League final and to see them winning leagues. "I want to win the Champions League every year, to be a league champion every year. It's what we all want." Asked about the upcoming World Cup, Messi added: "We deserve to be there because of our history, although it cost us a lot in the last World Cups to reach those rounds, but we have to be there again. "It's more of a desire because of everything we've gone through, rather than an obligation. We're the first to want to be champions in Russia." www.dabbsports.com

In the wake of Arsenal Manager Arsene Wenger’s departure, they have been another prominent figure in the Gunners set up who will no more be seen on Arsenal bench next season, Colin Lewin is the man. Arsenal's head of medical services Colin Lewin has lost his job after 23 years with the Premier League club. The decision was delivered to the 44-year-old on Monday and is understood to have left many Arsenal players and staff shocked and upset at the manner with which the dedicated staff has been booted out. Lewin leaves as part of a medical department restructure that could result in further departures. It is the latest in a series of backroom exits following the end of Arsene Wenger's tenure as manager. The 68-year-old Frenchman is leaving after almost 22 years in charge and following a season when the Gunners finished sixth in the league and reached the last four of the Europa League. Lewin is the cousin of former Arsenal and England physiotherapist Gary Lewin, who is now at West Ham United. Is this the end of the restructuring and shake up at the club and the emergence of the ‘New Order’? More could definitely be in the offing. www.dabbsports.com

Liverpool ended the English Premier League 2017/18 season on a high as they hammered visiting Brighton 4-0 at Anfield to secure a Champions League spot for next season. It was an emphatic win and an impressive performance on a perfect sunny day at Anfield and Klopp’s men rode on even after the final whistle, soaking up the celebratory atmosphere with the Champions League final against the defending champions Real Madrid in the offing, May 26. “Two weeks break is perfect for us,” said Klopp.”We’ll be ready for the final. This group of players really deserves it. They keep moving to the next level.” Mohamed Salah was the centre of attraction as hopes of his scoring on the last day of the football season was a subject of discourse prior to the encounter. There was the Golden Boot for the Premier League’s top scorer to be presented, the club’s player of the year trophy too. The forward was clearly touched and he shared the moment with his wife and young daughter. It was his record goal that set the Reds on course to push off the threat Brighton could possibly pose. Liverpool needed the win, at worst a draw to seal a fourth placed finish ahead of Chelsea who hoped for a slip from the Reds, but Newcastle thumped the Blues 3-0 at Saint James’ Park. Salah went away with lots of awards; a player signed from Roma for £34m last summer. He went on to break the Premier League record netting his 44th in 51 games for Liverpool in all competitions this season. Alan Shearer scored 31 Premier League goals for Blackburn in 1995-96 season, Cristiano Ronaldo achieved same feat during his time at Manchester United in 2007-08, and former Liverpool forward Luis Suarez scored 31 times in 2013-14. Hours before the last game of the season, Salah added the Premier League player of the season award to the other two major individual prizes he’s won this year – the PFA Player of the Year and Football Writers’ Association Football of the Year awards. Salah hopes to end the season lifting the Uefa Champions League with Liverpool on May 26 in Kiev. It will be a moment to relish should they beat defending champions Real Madrid to the title. Brighton manager Chris Hughton feels proud of his team’s achievement as many saw them as a potential candidate for the Championship next season but they truly fought hard to see them remain with the Premier League’s status. Their impressive 3-0 thumping of West Ham in October, a 2-1 victory over the Gunners in March and getting to the quarter final of the prestigious FA Cup only to lose to Manchester United were their proud moments; not to forget their sweet revenge against the ‘Red devils’ in the EPL as they beat United 1-0 on May 4. The lows in the season were having seven match-winless run which saw them dropped and finished 15th on the table. They would have earned £21.4m if they had finished 10th, a position they occupied on March 4, but however finishing fifteenth saw them receive £11.6m. What the managers say: Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp told BBC Sport: “The boys had pressure on them – massive pressure for the last few weeks.it was fantastic to qualify for the Champions League. It’s a massive achievement. “We did it in an impressive manner. We tried to win the game from the first second. A point was enough but I have no real idea how to go for a point. “We could have scored more but I’m glad we didn’t. Brighton did not deserve that after a really good season. “James Milner (who was left out of the squad) will be fine, just today was a bit early for him. “I had no clue about (Salah’s) record. I took him off and then I heard that Tottenham had scored five – Harry Kane could have got them all! He has been brilliant and he can improve so much. He will score in the future, 100%.” Brighton boss Chris Hughton spoke to BBC Sport: “It was a very hard afternoon for us. We knew when we came here we would have to play at a very high level and stay in the game but they caused us so many problems. “They only disappointment was that we didn’t keep possession well enough today. The season as a whole, we have been in nearly every game and we have had good performances against big clubs. “We find it hard playing the top six away from home but our season shows more good than bad.” www.dabbsports.com

Roberto Mancini according to Sky in Italy has agreed a two-year deal in principle to become Italy’s head coach. The former Inter Milan manager was billed to travel to the city of Rome to meet with the Italian FA chiefs with a view to finalise his contract having parted ways with Russian club Zenit St Petersburg on Sunday. Mancini, 53 is said to have agreed to take a pay cut to secure the job, having already given up potential earnings of €13m (£11.5m) by agreeing a termination of his contract just a year into a three-year deal. The Italian is set to sign a deal with Italy until the end of Euro 2020 that will see him earn around €2m (£1.8m) a year. Mancini will converge with his team on May 22 at Italy’s Coverciano training centre to set up preparation for his first game in charge against Saudi Arabia in San Gallo on May 28. The four-time World Cup winners failed to qualify for Russia 2018 as they were beaten by fellow Europeans Sweden in the play-offs. Mancini’s appointment might see the return of Mario Balotelli to the national team, a player who played under the manager years back for Manchester City in the English Premier League. The forward was omitted from the selection against Argentina and England earlier this year. Italy will also play France in an international friendly prior to the World Cup in Nice on June 1 and take on Netherlands in Turin on June 4. www.dabbsports.com

One of the English Premier League’s greatest midfielder Yaya Toure says he would like to stay in the Premier League and his decision over a move will not be motivated by money. The Ivorian will leave current league champions Manchester City at the end of the season, ending his 8 year association with the club. Toure on Wednesday bid the fans and supporters an emotional farewell after an illustrious career with the Citizens. Toure, 34 has won three Premier League titles since his arrival at the Etihad Stadium, Manchester City’s home ground from Barcelona in 2010, helping to transform the club into a formidable side and a force to reckon with. The player’s agent Dimitri Seluk said earlier in the week that Toure would pay back half his wages if his next club was not satisfied with his performances. Toure when answering questions said: “Of course, I want to stay in England, but I will take some time, thinking as always to choose the right one. “I have maybe one or two years more to play. To go to China or Abu Dhabi, it looks for myself to get more money. “Of course, people are going to be happy to get some money, but that’s not my point of view. “Definitely there have been other clubs but I have to compare all the situations and if it’s good for me or not.” The midfielder expects City to be a force again next season, but says they will have to keep improving if they are to successfully defend their Premier League title feat, something they failed to do in 2012 and 2014. “The Premier League is the toughest in the world and I hope they are going to respond to the challenge because next season is going to be tougher,” he added. Toure leaves behind indelible footprints that will stand the taste of time as he will always be remembered as one of the greatest midfielders to have graced the English Premier League and one of City’s finest. www.dabbsports.com

Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford were regarded as the focus of Jose Mourinho’s ire following the 1-0 defeat to Brighton last time out and the Manchester United manager did indeed drop both for the visit to West Ham on Thursday. They were two of eight changes but even in their absence, United continued to lack fluency and fire at the London Stadium. Whether Mourinho will be too concerned about that is unclear. In his pre-match interview, when asked what he was hoping for with his team selection, he replied: "A point." It was in reference to the one needed for United to mathematically secure second spot in the Premier League this season and that is duly what United got with their goalless draw. But what else will Mourinho have on his mind after this result? Here, we pick out three talking points following United's penultimate fixture of the Premier League season… Goals lacking without Lukaku? Romelu Lukaku's 12 goals since the turn of the year represents a good return from United's striker but he has not featured since going off injured with his team a goal up against Arsenal last month. In the two games that United have played without him since then, away to Brighton and now West Ham, they have failed to find a single goal. "It is not really what you expect from Manchester United in terms of pushing it going forwards," Teddy Sheringham told Sky Sports. After Rashford failed to impress on the south coast, this time it was Alexis Sanchez's turn to deputise but it was no great success either. Mourinho favours a reference point up top and, without Lukaku, that's a problem. Alexis Sanchez took on centre-forward duties in Romelu Lukaku's absence "Why does he come back so deep all the time?" asked Gary Neville on co-commentary for Sky Sports. "He plays there far too often since he has come to United. He has got to beat 10 players there to get to the goal. He is just making it difficult for himself and I am not quite sure why he has got into the rut of coming really deep and playing as a midfield player." Is the blend in midfield right? With Sanchez helping out, United saw plenty of the balls in the middle of the pitch with Ander Herrera having 131 touches of the ball and completing 104 passes. The Spaniard's inclusion alongside Scott McTominay gave Paul Pogba the freedom that he so often craves and the star man was able to get forward more, but there was still something lacking in the United midfield. "That's the one thing I would say watching this Manchester United team this season," said Neville. "The rhythm, passing and quality through midfield has not been anywhere near good enough. Herrera isn't that type of player. Nemanja Matic isn't that type of player. Pogba has been too inconsistent." He added: "They have got to look to thread it through into the front players. Playing the easy pass wide to the full-back is exactly what the opposition want, particularly when they are out of shape. They haven't got anyone who can beat a man or be inventive and break the lines. I am sure, for Jose Mourinho, central midfield will be a priority in the summer." Back three against Chelsea? Mourinho went back to the back-three for this game and it worked well defensively as Manchester United restricted West Ham to only two shots on target. Perhaps that was with next week's FA Cup final against Chelsea in mind. "I was thinking in the first half, what is Jose Mourinho getting out of this team selection," said Neville. "I can think of managers who would be building towards the big game that's coming up next week and he might have that at the back of his mind. He has done something similar against Eden Hazard before at Stamford Bridge where Phil Jones kept going in to mark from a back-three position. So he could be thinking that." Chris Smalling, speaking to Sky Sports afterwards, said: "We have played it a few times earlier in the season but had not played it for a little while. I think it shows that we can play both formations. You never know what opposition we are going to come up against and if we have got the option to play a few formations then it is up our sleeve." United may have options but Jose Mourinho is still searching for the right one. Culled from Skysports www.dabbsports.com

The Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) is the country’s elite football league with 20 football clubs nationwide involved in the activities of the league. While we have a few private teams, the bulk of the clubs are owned, sponsored and managed by the various state governments. The League Management Company [LMC] is saddled with the responsibility to manage the league in collaboration with Nigeria Football Federation(NFF). Since the emergence of the League Management Company headed by Shehu Dikko, the have been lots of reforms that has given the league a new look with sponsors been present more than ever. Violence in football and crowd trouble are issues impeding the growth of the round lather game in the country as it tends to rub mud on the hard work and a level of success recorded by the LMC. The Nigeria Professional Football League has what it takes to be one of the most organized and respected league in the continent, but its standing is undermined by recurring incidents that stems from clubs’ inability to accept outcomes when results don’t go their way. This has often led to club officials and fans taking laws into their hands by carrying out dastardly acts that tarnishes the image of the league cum efforts of the LMC. The League Management Company has greatly been too lenient on erring clubs, limiting their punitive measures to handing out fines and banishing teams to play in different stadium; always in the same geographical location. Many keen followers of the league have raised voices in a bid to see the league improve and have asked the LMC to hand out harsher punishments but they league’s governing body is yet to slam tougher penalties on defaulting teams. However, things have changed this year with Sunshine Stars of Akure having three points deducted following an incident that occurred in a 0-0 draw against visiting Kano Pillars. Match officials were attacked after the encounter and the state club which has a reputation for crowd disturbances had to play a most of their games at Ijebu-Ode in Ogun state last season due to crowd trouble. Newly promoted side Heartland FC were also handed heavy sanctions by the LMC. The Owerri-based club assaulted the match referee after they played out a 1-1 draw with last season’s NPFL champions Plateau United. The referee was injured in the process and this prompted the LMC to wield the big stick and slammed a fine of N7.5 million and ensured the Nazi Millionaires play afterwards behind closed doors. The latest of such incidences was the match between Yobe Desert Stars and Kwara Stars in a match played at Damaturu. The game ended 1-1 which was a breather for the Illorin-based outfit and needed a positive result to boost their chance of remaining in the NPFL. The club officials and fans of Yobe Stars were unhappy with the outcome of the result, hence invaded the pitch in the process and had the match officials and the away team (Kwara United) were ambushed and beaten. The home teams have been handed the same punishment as Heartland FC but were asked to pay a fine of N4.25 million. While encomium should be showered on the LMC for a great improvement in the league and with the sanctions meted out on erring teams and a few other areas, one major area of concern is ‘player welfare’. The league framework states that clubs must pay players according to contractual agreements and failure to do this could mean heavy sanctions are imposed. The LMC seem to turn a blind eye on this sensitive and vital aspect of league management, as clubs are seen owing players backlog of salaries and allowances. This negative trend does not portray the league in a good light hence explains why players are ready to any league, even those lower in the standard of play to the NPFL due to poor welfare emoluments back here in the league. The League Management Company [LMC] must work assiduously and enforce in all aspects of the game and the league rules as enshrined in the articles that govern the league in the country as this will ensure growth in the country’s football and attract more private investors. www.dabbsports.com

Sir Alex Ferguson is out of intensive care at Salford Royal Hospital as he continues his recovery from brain surgery. The former Manchester United manager will continue rehabilitation as an inpatient at the hospital after he suffered a brain haemorrhage on Saturday. Thousands of football fans across the globe heard the tragic news and all prayed for the speedy recovery of the football legend. Shortly after Atletico Madrid’s loss at home to visiting fellow La Liga club Espanyol, the club’s manager Diego Simeone has claimed his Sunday’s shocking 2-0 defeat to Espanyol was due to the fact that he does not have a large squad to prosecute matches. Simeone whose club defeated Arsenal 1-0 in the second leg tie of the Europa League at the Wanda Metropolitan Stadium made several changes following Thursday’s continental game and Atletico Madrid went on to lose their first home league match of the season to the Catalan-based outfit. The Atletico manager has admitted that he simply does not have the players to fully rotate his squad. “We have very few players and this can be very problematic,” Marca quotes Simeone as saying. ”For this game we had [Diego] Costa and [Angel] Correa suspended, Gabi and [Diego] Godin are both 32 and they both put in a lot of energy to Thursday, as did [Antoine] Griezmann. “We have a busy schedule and with the size of our squad, you have to accept that these things will happen.” Despite the home-loss, Atletico remain second in the table behind Barcelona, but leave Real Madrid occupying the third spot, now trailing behind Atletico by just 3 points with an outstanding game in hand. With just few games left before the Spanish Primera division comes to a close for the 2017/18 season, Diego Simeone’s men hope to consolidate on the second position as reaching or surpassing table toppers Barcelona is impossible. www.dabbsports.com

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger admits he can’t really state his feelings concerning leaving Arsenal and he has said it will surely take a while to sink in that he’s truly gone. Wenger’s last game at home in charge of the Gunners on Sunday at the Emirates saw him bid an emotional farewell with a superlative 5-0 win over fellow Premier League side Burnley. The Frenchman announced his departure last month stating of his intention to vacate the dignified seat which he held sway for 22 years. He is yet to make his decisions of what follows next after his duties at Arsenal whether he will continue in management or in football itself. Wenger admitted after the game on Sky Sports that he has still not grasped his emotions regarding his departure. “It’s very emotional,” Wenger told Sky Sports. “It’s the last time and it’s such a long time. Such a big love story, and of course you don’t want to end it but everything comes to an end. “I think it’s a season of contrast, we’ve won 15 of 19 home games and have scored a lot of goals – it might be our best home season in my 22 years. But it didn’t end like we wanted it. “It’s not started to sink in yet. I’m so focused, and as a manager you disconnect from your feelings or ask yourself how you feel. You become a bit robotic about just winning the next game and the problems you have. “You forget yourself, it will take a bit of time to reconnect and really know how I feel. “It is a story that ends. I see it one way: guys, who have managed for 22 years at a club of this stature, you don’t have many. So I can only say: ‘You have been very lucky to work for such a long time at a club of this stature.’ “I will cherish every minute I was here, but as well it is a new start for me.in 22 years, I think I was in 840 Premier League games. Do you know what that means, how many sleepless nights? Before the game; after the game? I have to think all of that.” The Frenchman was asked what he was proud of: “First of all, for having maybe been faced with the values that are important to me. The titles are important, but over a long period integrity, values of the club and team spirit are the most important for me.” Wenger won three Premier League titles at Arsenal where he spent 22 years and having joined the Gunners at Highbury in 1996 and he helped the club rise financially viable in the years that followed and oversaw their move to the Emirates in 2006. About whom to replace him at the club, Wenger could not say concretely who his possible successor would be but said the club is in a good place to go forward. “The new man inherits a team which is much better than people think it is, and I’m convinced, you can see the togetherness in the team is special. With the right additions this team will challenge next year.” It’s been 22 meritorious years of service for Arsene Wenger who has sacrifice so much to see Arsenal grow over the years with some remarkable moments as well as setting some yet to be broken records; How well Arsenal will fare after the departure of the Frenchman will only take a while to be ascertain. Will the core values built by the Frenchman be kept, preserved and followed? Or will the emergency of a new manager change in near totality what Wenger’s 22 years worked hard to build? www.dabbsports.com

Real Madrid star Gareth Bale who has had not too rosy a season at the Santiago Bernabeu is on the radar of both Manchester United and Tottenham. His stay and influence at Real Madrid has been on the diminishing trend over time and the Welsh man who came from the bench in the Uefa Champions League semi-final second leg game against Bayern Munich may leave at the end of the season. According to The Express Gareth Bale has reached an agreement with Mauricio Pochettino’s Tottenham Hotspur on a sensational return to the club. Season ago, the Spanish giants paid a staggering £86m which saw Bale moving away from ‘White Hart Lane’ to the ‘Santiago Bernabeu’ and that decision to pitch tents with Madrid over the years paid up as Bale has alongside his club won several silverware which include the prestigious trophy, the Uefa Champions League, and other domestics titles. It is most likely that the Welshman will opt for a return to the club that brought him more fame as opposed to a move in the Manchester direction. He is no doubt a fantastic player and Tottenham faithful may be pleased to see him return to add more bit and flare to the team’s attack-line but will this deal not come at a greater price? Real Madrid were beaten by Tottenham in the group stage of the Champions League so they have a clearer view of Tottenham arsenals, and with the English forward Harry Kane being in fine form this season and Dele Alli’s pace and agility, it is possible for an inclusion of one of these players in the deal for a possible return of the ‘beloved Bale’ to Wembley stadium. Pochettino earlier in the season talked on the qualities of Gareth Bale:”Of course he’s a fantastic player,” he said. “He keeps contact with all the people here that worked here in the past”. Tottenham currently occupy the fourth spot on the Premier League table with 71 points, just a point behind 3rd place occupants Liverpool, and with few games to go in the EPL, a Champions League spot is almost certain. www.dabbsports.com

Arsenal’s trip to the Wanda Metropolitano will be Arsenal Manager Arsene Wenger’s 250th European game in charge of the London-based club. Arsene Wenger hopes to “leave on a high” as he sees out the last few weeks left of his stay with the Gunners, and as they face Atletico Madrid in Thursday’s Europa League semi-final second leg, the Frenchman can’t wish for anything else other than a win. Wenger will leave the club this summer after 22 years in charge, with several trophies to show for his meritorious service in developing English football. Arsenal travel to Madrid to face Atletico with a 1-1 score-line in the kitty for both teams to do justice to, after a late equalizer by Griezmann at the Emirates gave the Spanish side an away goal advantage. The Gunners need to score in the second leg clash (20.05 BST kick off) if they are to have a chance of qualification. Arsenal’s only hope of qualifying for next season’s Champions League is to win the Europa League. “I don’t know what I will do next season,” said Wenger. “At the moment I think I would like to finish my job well. “I believe a man has to give his best as long as he is somewhere, with all my commitment and energy I would like to walk out of Arsenal one day and think until the last day I focused only on Arsenal. “When my job is finished at Arsenal I will see where I go from there but I want to finish this love story well.” The Gunners have not fared well away from home in 2018 in the Premier League but the manager Wenger says their domestic record has no bearing on the game at Wanda Metropolitano. “In Europe we have done well away from home and we just want to focus on the game and our performance,” he said. “The players will not be too worried about the Premier League form.” On former Chelsea forward Diego Costa filing out for Atletico Madrid therefore posing as a threat to Arsenal’s defence and onward qualification, Wenger had this to say: “He has shown that he can make a difference. He played in England and was successful but it is our job to keep him quiet. Maybe the best way to do that is to play in their half and not ours. “Antoine Griezmann has done very well in Madrid and unfortunately he hurt us last week. He is a player I rate very much and he has made it away from home. I think he has had an exceptional career.” On injury worries for the Gunners, Henrikh Mkhitaryan who went down with a knee injury and was substituted in a match again his former employers Manchester United could feature for the Gunners as he travelled with the team; David Ospina will likely retain the goalkeeping position at Madrid tonight. Atletico Madrid on records boast of the meanest defence in the La Liga this season and Diego Simeone’s men have only conceded three goals at home in 2018. But Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger believes “history has to stop somewhere” as the Gunners aim to secure their third European final in his reign. www.dabbsports.com

The Uefa Champions League second leg tie match between Real Madrid and Bayern Munich at the Santiago Bernabeu came to a conclusion with the current reigning champions Real Madrid advancing to the final once again. Making the trip to Spain with a 2-1 goal aggregate was quite a psychological task for Bayern Munich who were wasteful back at home against an opportunity-prone Madrid side. Bayern needed a win at the Bernabeu to reach the final but the game finished 2-2 as Real Madrid clinched a 4-3 aggregate win. It was certainly as pulsating and action-packed as football followers had envisaged and as the whistle was blasted, the visitors took control of the possession with Madrid sitting deep to absorb the pressure mounted by the desperate Bayern team. Joshua Kimmich scored early for the Bavarians from six yards out but their lead didn’t last as a run down the left wing by Marcelo with a cross swung in, a goal from a Benzema’s header restored parity. The score board had Madrid 1- 1 Bayern. The second half commenced with Bayern hoping to upset their host but a horrendous mistake from Bayern goalkeeper Sven Ulreich, put Madrid ahead as Karim Benzema scored a second. On-loan Bayern forward James Rodriguez then scored against his parent club to keep the game open to the final minute. Bayern Munich had several opportunities to win at the Bernabeu but Corentin Tolisso and Muller’s efforts were saved by Real Madrid’s keeper Keylor Navas. Sergio Ramos made a mess of his attempted clearance at the near post from a right wing ball delivery by Thomas Muller and Kimmich nicely slotted the ball into the net. Coach Zidane surprisingly restored Benzema back to the starting line-up after the Frenchman who has had a poor run of form had scored just once in his previous 12 games. He was a substitute in the first leg fixture at the Allianz Arena. There was a huge slice of luck for Real Madrid and the second goal scored by Benzema. The ball rolled to Ulreich from Tolisso brought about the second goal but the goalkeeper thought about picking up the back-pass, only to instantaneously realize he could not while he swung forth his right leg and missed the ball, only to have a chasing Benzema tap-in easily. It was indeed a moment of grieve for Bayern but they fought on and Rodriguez pulled one back for Bayern and all they needed that point was just another goal to as to progress on away goals. But the resilient Real Madrid side held on coupled with a spectacular showing from Keylor Navas. Only Liverpool or Roma now stands between Zidane and his third successive Champions League title in 3 years. Credit must be given to Bayern Munich who played so well in both legs of the fixture dominating possession; they have won the domestic league with sitting 24 points clear off second-placed Schalke 04 with five games left. However, Bayern’s exit is another failure at the highest level of European competition and they have now gone out in the semi-finals in four of the past five editions since lifting the trophy in 2013. Real Madrid will face either Liverpool who visits Rome tonight in the final in Kiev, Ukraine on May 26. www.dabbsports.com

Bayern Munich visits the Santiago Bernabeu with the services of the Dutch winger Arjen Robben after he suffered a leg injury eight minutes in to the first leg. His early replacement in the first leg of the Champions League semi-final affected the attack-mindedness of the team and they went on to lose 2-1 in front of their fans. Midfielder Javi Martinez (head) and left-back David Alaba (thigh) are expected to be part of the team once again. The injury worries ahead of the epoch match is not just a one-sided problem as Real Madrid’s right-back Dani Carvajal is likely to miss out due to a hamstring problem but despite the shoulder injury sustained by Spanish midfielder Isco, he trained on Monday with the team. Madrid’s coach Zinedine Zidane was coy on who fill the vacant role of the injured Carvajal, and centre-back Nacho and winger Lucas Vasquez are the mostly likely candidates. The Frenchman added that his side will look to attack from the start irrespective of the mathematical analysis that even a 1-0 loss to visiting Bayern will see them through to the finals. “The key thing for us is to think about winning the game and to go on to the pitch wanting to do that,” Zidane said. “We need to go out to score quickly and that’s what we’ll try to do.” Zidane also doesn’t think his future depends on winning the Champions League as they prepare for the semi-final second leg tie against Bayern Munich. When Zidane was asked if he had to win the tournament to keep his job, he said: “It’s independent of that.” Zidane’s side have not been knocked out of Europe once during his two-and –a-half years in charge did say: “Today I’m am coach and I want to continue at this club. “But it’s not important. What matters to everyone is thinking about this game and that’s it.” Bayern interim manager Jupp Heynckes says his side will look to remedy their errors from the first leg. “We need to minimize our mistakes and we want to change a few things from the first leg,” he said. “Changing nothing would be an error. I saw positive things but there are things to be fixed. I’ll be trying to rectify mistakes; we’ll try to attack. We conceded goals because of some mistakes – it had nothing to do with the organisation or style of play. MATCH FACTS Bayern Munich Bayern Munich have failed to keep a clean sheet in their past 13 Champions League away games, their joint-longest of such run in the competition (it equals the record they set between April 1999 and December 2000). No player has been involved in more goals for Bayern in the Champions League this season than Joshua Kimmich; having scored 3 goals and making 3 assists. They are on a run of two Champions League games without a win (D1, L1). They have not gone three matches in a row without a victory in the competition between September to November 2009. Polish forward and Bayern striker Lewandowski has not scored in his past four Champions League games with Bayern Munich, his longest drought with the club. He has never failed to find the net in five consecutive outing in the competition. Real Madrid Real Madrid with Zidane at the helm of affairs have never been knocked out of the Champions League, progressing in all eight of their two-legged ties as well as winning the two-finals they have featured in. Arsenal failed to consolidate on the advantage they had on the night against a 10-man Atletico Madrid side as the visitors salvaged a draw in the semi-final first leg of the Europa League at the Emirates Stadium. The game started with the Gunners showing dominance and having the greater percentage of ball possession, hence mounting much pressure on the Madrid side. Arsenal forward Lacazette gave the Gunners the lead when he nodded in Jack Wilshere’s cross after one hour of play but this came after series of misses by the home team. The goal apparently moved Arsenal closer to a possible Europa League final with hopes of possibly having manager Arsene Wenger leave in a memorable fashion. The visitors had their player Sime Vrsaljko sent off earlier in the first half as he was shown a red card, after being yellow carded early in the game. This act made the atmosphere more tensed with a furious Atletico manager Diego Simeone sent to the stands as he challenged the decision of the centre referee. The Spanish side survived unscathed to the break, with Alexandre Lacazette sending a half volley above the crossbar, the host best chance in the first half. Atletico couldn’t have so much flare and freedom on the night as they battled to fill the space of Vrsaljko who was sent off earlier in the match. But with eight minutes remaining, Griezmann latched on to a long ball forward, shrugged off Laurent Koscielny and beautifully tipped the ball above an approaching Mustafi and lodged the ball in the net. Arsenal fans were left ruing a familiar combination of wasteful finishing and costly lapses in concentration as the team departed to a muted response in Wenger’s final home European game. Wenger’s side must now breach an Atletico defence that has conceded just four times at home in La Liga this season to have any hope of extending Wenger’s 22-season spell in charge to the final on May 16. The tactical discipline of the Atletico side was witnessed last night as midfielder Thomas Partey slotted back into the defence, and forward Antoine Griezmann dropped deeper and their whole side set about absorbing Arsenal’s pressure and running more so as to cover more space. The tightest defence in the La Liga this season – with only 18 goals conceded in 34 games –but was finally unlocked as Arsenal’s Wilshere flung a pass and Lacazette towered above Luca Hernandez to score his 16th of the season. Wenger has lost twice in European finals with Arsenal failing to win the penalty shoot-out against Turkish side Galatasaray in the 2000 Uefa Cup final, before being struck a blow by Barcelona in the Champions League final six years later. Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger spoke to BT Sport after the game: “Looking at the performance and the way the game went, it was the worst possible result for us, but we have to go there in a positive mood and qualify. “Of course it feels like an opportunity missed. We could have qualified tonight but it didn’t happen. Their keeper made a lot of saves and they showed their quality by scoring with one chance. “What matters is that we go there with the belief to do it.” Arsenal will have to focus on the domestic scene this weekend as they travel to Old Trafford on Sunday to face Manchester United (16:30 BST) in a Premier League clash, and in the Spanish La Liga, Atletico Madrid travel to face Alaves on Sunday before both sides face each other on Thursday in the second leg of the Europa League. www.dabbsports.com

The Emirates stadium will be a beehive of activities as the first leg of the Europa League semi-final between Arsenal and Atletico Madrid will take place at the over 60, 000 seating capacity edifice. Some soccer pundits see the match between both teams as ‘the final before the final’ in a match that promises to be intense, action-packed and highly tactical. Arsenal are glad to have Jack Wilshere, Mesut Ozil and Petr Cech available for selection ahead of tonight’s encounter. The trio were absent on Sunday in the Gunner’s win over West Ham due to minor injuries. Atletico Madrid’s manager Diego Simeone has included former Chelsea forward Diego Costa in the squad for the showdown at the Emirates. Simeone said at the weekend the Spanish striker had “no chance” of being fit for the trip to Arsenal for the Europa League first leg tie but the forward who had a hamstring injury has been included in the 20-man squad. The forward has missed three games limping out of the quarter final second leg clash against Sporting Lisbon, and has netted six times in 18 games for Atletico since his move from Chelsea. Arsenal’s Henrikh Mkhitaryan will be unavailable for the game tonight but Gunners boss Arsene Wenger is hopeful the midfielder will be fit to feature in the second tie as he recovers from a knee injury. Mohamed Elneny who has damaged ankle ligaments is out for the remaining part of the season, an injury sustained in a match against West Ham. Striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is ineligible to play for Arsenal, having featured for Borussia Dortmund in the same competition this season. Having made known his departure plans, the Europa League is Wenger’s final chance to win a major trophy at the club. The Frenchman admitted it would be an “anti-climax” should the Gunners fail to do so. “That’s why we want to give our absolute all to have a chance of going to the final,” he added. On facing Atletico, Wenger said: “I would say one of the strengths is that they have no obvious weakness. “They are a very efficient team and a team who can use every weak moment of their opponent.” This is obviously going to be the first meeting between these sides. Atletico will be the tenth Spanish side the Gunners have faced in Europe. Despite Arsenal’s position in the English Premier League this season, they have scored 29 goals this season in Europa League; more than any other side. In only one previous European campaign have the Gunners score more, netting 30 in 1999-2000 when they competed in both Champions League and the Uefa Cup. Atletico on the other hand have score 15 goals in their Europa campaign this season, giving them the best goals-per-game average in the competition (2.5) www.dabbsports.com

Bayern Munich are currently chasing their sixth European Cup trophy, as they hope to repeat their 2013 treble-winning feat. The Bavarians are no doubt a strong force in the European scene as well as a strong contender for the Champions League title, but they will need to be in the best of form if they are to defeat the current Champions League champions and twelve time winners. Both soccer giants fight for supremacy in the first leg tie of the Champions League semi-final at the Allianz Arena tonight. Bayern’s veteran coach, Jupp Heynckes who came out of retirement in September to take charge of Bayern again, said despite Real’s strength, the two consecutive Champions League title winners are no favourites. “This match will be a delight for the football consumer because you have top players on both sides and teams play attractive football, cultivated football”, Heynckes said. “There is no favourite; although I do have a good feeling for us.” At the far end of Madrid, club’s defender Dani Carvajal says he’s confident Real Madrid can make history and become the first team to win the Champions League three years in succession. Carvajal told Madrid’s website: “Nothing is impossible, we’re going to fight for it. “We are working hard and, if wee done it twice, why wouldn’t we go for that third consecutive Champions League? “Since I’ve been here, I’ve been lucky that I’ve been able to reach the semi-final every year. Every year has something special and this season more so, due to teams we’ve come up against. We are happy and looking forward to playing the game.” On the availability of players for the clash, Zinedine Zidane’s men have no new injury worries after the having no domestic duty over the weekend. And with centre back Sergio Ramos back from suspension and Nacho back in training, the team is set for the semi-final battle against their familiar foe. Bayern’s Heynckes have no injury concerns too as those unavailable have been out for a long while with goal keeper Neuer who has a foot problem played last for the Bavarians in September, while Arturo Vidal is out for the rest of the season due to knee injury. French winger Koman has been out since February with an ankle injury. Tonight’s game will be the third time since 2011/12 that Bayern and Real Madrid have faced each other in the Champions League semi-finals, with Madrid progressing in 2013/14 while the German emerging victors in 2011/12 meeting. www.dabbsports.com

Liverpool’s magnificent display last night at Anfield with Salah’s unfathomable display saw them thump AS Roma 5-2, proving once again how deadly Liverpool’s frontline is. The Reds showing saw them take control of their Champions League semi-final first leg tie, but Roma’s two late away goals gave the Italian outfit a glimmer of hope for the second leg at the Stadio Olympico. Liverpool, who last reached the final in 2007, repeatedly breached the visitor’s naively high defensive line and scored five times in the opening 68 minutes at the packed filled stadium called ‘Anfield’. Liverpool proved too hot for Roma to handle with their former player Salah tearing them into shreds as he curled his first goal of the night into the top corner from the edge of the box – fans scrambled off their seats in wild jubilation. More was to come from the Egyptian maestro who made it 2-0 for Liverpool when he clipped the ball over Brazil’s and Roma goal keeper Alisson to get his second goal of the night –things were indeed getting so mixed up for the visitors at Anfield. Mo Salah then ran down the right and squared a pass for Senegal’s Sadio Mane to make it 3-0 before repeating the same feat as he set up Roberto Firmino to get the fourth goal for Liverpool. What more would have been said of a player who rose above everyone to showcase such a rear feat as this; Roma surely could not find their bearing at Anfield as the Egyptian and his team mates made the night to be one ‘to be remembered’. Salah, who has now scored 43 goals since his summer move from the Italian outfit, Roma scored twice and gave two assists to see Mane and Firmino find the back of the net. Liverpool became the second team to score five goals in a Champions League semi-final match when Firmino nodded the ball in James Milner’s corner. Salah was pulled out by Jurgen Klopp with his side leading 5-0 but the changes made lessen the threat Liverpool did pose earlier in the game. Roma gradually settled in and were rewarded with two late goals to finish at 5-2. Roma forward Edin Dzeko lashed home from Radja Nainggolans’ clinical pass to score the first for the visitors, with Diego Perrotti netting the second from the penalty spot after Milner handled the shot from Nainggolan. Liverpool’s Alex Oxlade Chamberlain was carried off the pitch with a stretcher as the England midfielder ‘probably had a bad injury’. The win at Anfield for Liverpool pushes them a step closer to the final of the Champions League which will see them face either Bayern Munich or defending champions Real Madrid. www.dabbsports.com
