Nearly a century after it was seized from a prominent Black family, the oceanside property known as Bruce's Beach is officially being returned to the descendants of its original owners.

L.A. County Supervisors unanimously approved the handover plan Tuesday, following a lengthy process of negotiations and approval from state lawmakers.

The Manhattan Beach property once belonged to Willa and Charles Bruce, who ran a popular resort that was one of the few places in L.A. County where Black families could enjoy the beach. But the Bruces faced racist threats from neighbors, and their property was eventually seized - through eminent domain — for a pittance — in 1924.

Supervisor Janice Hahn, who kickstarted the process to return the property, says the transfer will allow the Bruce's descendants to rebuild the wealth their family has long been denied.

"We can't change the past," Hahn said. "And we will never be able to make up for the injustice that was done to Willa and Charles Bruce a century ago. But this is a start."

As part of the deal, the property, which is worth an estimated $20 million dollars, will be rented out to the county for $413,000 a year.

"This is but one step in our effort to acknowledge true American history, and not deny it, and ways in which government can step up and think outside of the box about how we repay and return properties to its rightful owners," said Supervisor Holly Mitchell.

The Family
Great-great grandson Anthony Bruce remembers the first time he visited the property with his father, who took him up to a high hill that looked out onto the ocean.

"He said, 'This is our property, and one day, you're gonna have to fight to get it back,'" Bruce said. "And so we did make sure to keep that family fight going."

Now, the fight is over.

In recent years, local activists brought attention to the beach's history. After the nationwide racial reckoning surrounding the murder of George Floyd, Hahn initiated steps to return the land.

Anthony Bruce said while his family plans to lease the property back to the county for now, it may sell it in the future.

"Hopefully, we'll be able to receive some more inheritance from that, the generational wealth — because this is something that our family was really robbed of," Bruce said.

Bruce hopes his family's story opens the door for other families looking to get their land returned, he said.

"Getting to this point has required sacrifices from the Bruce family that can never be repaid," Mitchell said in a statement ahead of the vote. "Although we cannot change the past, we have a responsibility to learn from it and to do what is right today.

I bought this Hyundai Veloster 2013 mid last year, it runs fine when I bought it... All of a sudden, it started having issues.
First is clutch issue which is the major one till now
Then absorbers doesn't last 2 months
I know I travel some times but no be like make 4 absorbers con dey worn out same time.

Now, as the situation of the country is, I'm thinking of starting Bolt business as a driver and also join a cab company here in Osogbo to support my printing business but I need opinion on whether to sell the car as it is coz I don't have any more funds to spend on it and use the proceedings to get a Toyota Camry Big Daddy or Corolla 2004 (used) or lend some money to repair the faulty things on the current car I'm using.

I'm strongly considering selling it as it is for maybe 1.7 thereabout if I see a buyer for it but y'all can have more knowledge than I do about cars.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has described the choice of Atiku Abubakar as his vice as a mistake.

Mr Obasanjo spoke in Abeokuta on Saturday to students from selected secondary schools who participated in the final of the National Exhibition and Awards, organised by Students for the Advancement of Global Entrepreneurship (SAGE).

The former president and Mr Abubakar were in office between 1999 and 2007.

Mr Obasanjo said he had made several “genuine mistakes” in his life but God helped him overcome them.

“One of the mistakes I made was picking my number two when I wanted to become the president,” said the former president. “But because it was a genuine mistake, God saved me.”

Mr Obasanjo said another mistake he made was not leaving the country when he was told about the plans of the late military dictator, Sani Abacha, to arrest him.

“The second one was when Abacha wanted to arrest me. Abacha wanted to arrest me and I was told by the American ambassador that, they will arrest me and that America has asked that I should be given an asylum but, I said no. It could have been a mistake because I could have lost my life.

“I will say there are many things that could have been a mistake but God saved me from them all.”

“Another thing inhibiting youth from running is the amount of money involved in going into politics. I hope that things should not continue like this,” he said.

“I was 39 years old when I became the military head of state. 20 later, I came back as civilian president, but those there now do not want to allow the youths. If things continue like this, I do not know how you can come in.”

Can you guys control your sticky fingered IT staff already or whose ever it is that has access to customers funds in the name of monthly charges? Within the last 24hours I have been billed for card maintenance 3 times. Yes the money is small enough for me to overlook and not worth my time to go to your overcrowded banking hall to go report to your rude and overworked staff but these moneys add up! By the time a person "steals"a few Naira each from millions or even thousands of customers every month, its gonna add up to a nice tidy sum. Besides, the situation of the country now, it doesn't take much to trigger a person emotionally and the security of a persons money in the bank is as big an emotional trigger as it gets.
