Education / Re: Finnish University's Online AI Technology Course Is Open To Everyone For Free by dami2boi(m): 10:55am On May 21, 2018
The course, which went live this week, has no prerequisites, is free of charge and open to anyone around the world.

Fagerlund participated in the creation of the course and says it is meant to dispel the mystery surrounding the technology and raise discussion about it, as well.

"We want to show that there's nothing particularly remarkable about AI, it's just about different ways of solving problems," she explains.

She also says there's no uniform definition of what, exactly, artificial intelligence is, apart from the terms "artificial" and "intelligent."

She says the technology is created by programmers and - unlike traditional computer programs - devices are programmed to carry out tasks, but then AI-powered machines are able to teach themselves how to do those tasks better - autonomously.

She says the tens of thousands of people who've already enrolled in the course are from all demographic groups.

"The fact is that we have 24,000 enrolees in the course and when we looked at who was signing up, we saw that they're from every age group, from people below the age of 20 up to 75 year-olds. They are professors, the unemployed, day care workers and dentists - people with very different backgrounds," she says.

But despite their differences, the new students of AI share common motives, she says.

"Everyone wants to learn what AI is because they think it will be a big deal in the future. They want to know how AI will affect their lives and how they can make use of it," Fagerlund says.

For her own part, Fagerlund hopes that major societal problems such as carbon emissions could be addressed with the help of AI.

Free online AI Technology course is open to everyone - Helsinki University in Finland

Helsinki University in Finland has launched a course on artificial intelligence -- one that's completely free and open to everyone around the world.
Unlike Carnegie Mellon's new undergrad degree in AI, which the institution created to train future experts in the field, Helsinki's offering is more of a beginner course for those who want to know more about it.

A lot of tech giants like Google now have divisions working on artificial intelligence projects, and even whole non-tech industries already depend on AI for various tasks.
But as Janina Fagerlund from the university's project partner (tech strategy firm Reaktor) said, people might not know that their lives are already affected by AI every day.

Fagerlund mentioned the use of AI in the food industry to sort produce and other items at facilities as an example. And while you know that Facebook uses AI for facial recognition, a lot of people might not.
Indeed, Helsinki's course focuses on the basics, starting with defining what AI is and explaining how it can solve problems.
The materials also discuss how AI is already used in the real world, and in the second part of the course, they explain how machine learning works and what neural networks are.

It will apparently take you about 30 hours to complete the course, which can earn you two academic credits through the Open University if you're from Finland. If you live elsewhere, you'll just have to make do with a certificate you can display on LinkedIn.

Science/Technology / Scientists Accidentally Produce An Enzyme That Devours Plastic - Yahoo News by dami2boi(m): 10:44am On Apr 18, 2018
Scientists accidentally produce an enzyme that devours plastic - Yahoo News

There are research teams around the world dedicated to finding a remedy for the growing plastic pollution crisis, but now it seems that one group of scientists have found a feasible answer -- and they stumbled upon it by accident. Researchers studying a newly-discovered bacterium found that with a few tweaks, the bug can be turned into a mutant enzyme that starts eating plastic in a matter of days, compared to the centuries it takes for plastic to break down in the ocean.

The surprise discovery was made when scientists began investigating the structure of a bacterium found in a waste dump in Japan. The bug produced an enzyme, which the team studied using the Diamond Light Source, an intense beam of X-rays 10 billion times brighter than the sun. At first, the enzyme looked similar to one evolved by many kinds of bacteria to break down cutin, a natural polymer used by plants as a protective layer. But after some gentle manipulation, the team actually improved its ability to eat PET (polyethylene terephthalate), the type of plastic used in drinks bottles.

Speaking to The Guardian, Professor John McGeehan, who led the research from the University of Portsmouth, said the discovery was "a bit of a shock," but that it could have a significant impact on the mounting global plastics problem. PET bottles that are currently recycled can only be turned into fibers for clothing and carpets. The mutant enzyme could be used to turn plastic back into its original components. "It means we won't need to dig up any more oil and, fundamentally, it should reduce the amount of plastic in the environment," said McGeehan.

Existing examples of industrial enzymes, such as those used in detergents and biofuels, have been manipulated to work up to 1,000 times faster in just a few years -- McGeehan believes the same could be possible with the new enzyme: "It gives us scope to use all the technology used in other enzyme development for years and years and make a super-fast enzyme." According to the team, potential future uses for the enzyme could include spraying it on the huge islands of floating plastic in oceans to break down the material.

Plastic pollution has seen renewed focus in recent times, thanks largely to attention drawn by David Attenborough's Blue Planet II series, and through a number of legislative proposals. Science has examined a huge range of solutions, from plastic-plucking robots to infrared identification from space, but the discovery of this mutant enzyme could herald an entirely new way of dealing with the issue.

Jobs/Vacancies / Nddc Trains 22,612 Youths, Women On Vocational Skills-just Found Out Now by dami2boi(m): 1:54pm On Mar 22, 2018
NDDC TRAINS 22,612 YOUTHS, WOMEN ON VOCATIONAL SKILLS -

The Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, says it has so far trained and built the capacity of 22,612 youths, including the 100 that just graduated in Home Finishing Skills.

The NDDC Managing Director, Mr Nsima Ekere, stated this at the 6th Graduation of Empowerment Support Initiative, ESI, and NDDC Entrepreneurial and Skill Acquisition Training for Niger Delta Youths in Home Finishing Skills in Port Harcourt.

He remarked that the NDDC was currently processing the training of about 5,000 more youths in various skills, noting that the mandate of the Commission went beyond physical infrastructure.

According to him, “it is also about building capacity and equipping our people with skills and competences that enable them to join the rising global workforce. This aligns with the local content policy of the President Muhammadu Buhari administration.”

The NDDC Chief Executive Officer said that the human capacity development strategy of the Commission was anchored on the Niger Delta Regional Development Master Plan, NDRDMP, which recommended the development of a highly skilled workforce that would enable the region to compete on equal terms with the leading players in the global market.

Ekere said that NDDC had trained internationally certified welding instructors in Nigeria and South Africa, adding that most of the beneficiaries were currently employed as non-destructive test engineers in the oil and gas industry.

He said: “We have also trained 700 school certificate holders in welding and fabrication, 65 engineering and geology graduates in highly specialised petroleum and drilling technology, 150 youths in solar power technology, 180 in oil spill management, 180 in fibre optics installations and thousands of others in various other skills and empowerment programmes, such as fashion design, catering, food processing, computer literacy, among others.”

Ekere said that the healthy partnership between NDDC and ESI demonstrated what could be achieved by collaborating with credible partners driven by the objective of finding solutions to the socio-economic difficulties and challenges confronting the Niger Delta region.

He noted that the building industry in Nigeria was facing a dearth of manpower, particularly in the critical area of office and home finishing and would require several trained hands locally to curtail the dependence on foreigners.

He commended the Board and Management of ESI for going the extra mile to bring world class experts in home finishing skills, from the United Kingdom, to lay a solid foundation for the pilot phase of the programme.

Ekere thanked President Buhari for showing commitment to the development and progress of the Niger Delta region, especially “for initiating the New Vision for the Niger Delta, which will effectively rewrite our history and steady us on the path to sustainable development.”

The Minister of Information, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said that the Federal Government was determined to create new jobs in all sectors of the economy.

He said that President Buhari administration had added millions of new jobs to the economy since it took office in 2015, stating: “before this government came into power; the nation had 5 million rice growers but today 12.2 million rice growers have been added.

Mohammed, however, said that job creation should not be left to the government alone, urging individuals, Non-Governmental Organizations and corporate bodies to join in the effort.

He described the NDDC/ESI entrepreneurship and skill acquisition programme as a well-conceived initiative that fitted into the government’s drive to generate employment for Nigerians.

In her own remarks, Dame Judith Amaechi, Founder and President of ESI, said beneficiaries were trained on P.O.P ceiling installation; wall screeding and painting; floor tiling; plumbing; electrical wiring; specialized carpentry such as wardrobes and kitchen cabinets, as well as interior decoration.

She said the empowerment scheme was created to close the skills-gap that hindered sustainable growth in the Niger Delta, noting that ESI was focused on tackling endemic poverty by developing a skilled force that would enable our youths to be employable and self-employed.

The graduating students of the Home Finishing Skills training were each given certificates, starter packs and N150,000 to enable them stand on their own.

Sports / Match Suspended After Owner Runs Into The Field With A Gun by dami2boi(m): 7:04pm On Mar 12, 2018
Greek soccer team president protested a disallowed goal with a gun

If you ever wanted to know what would happen if the president of a soccer team walked onto the pitch during a match while armed with a gun, this is your lucky day.

On Sunday, a match between two Greek Superleague teams, PAOK Salonika and AEK Athens, was suspended when the president and owner of PAOK Salonika, Ivan Savvides, stalked onto the pitch while armed with a gun. According to Reuters, The gun was holstered around his waist, and he was surrounded by bodyguards.

Savvides is one of Greece’s richest men, and a former member of the Russian Parliament. He came onto the pitch near the end of the game, after a PAOK Salonika goal was disallowed in the 89th minute. The gun was visible, but he never drew it as he complained to the referee about the goal.

It was actually the second time Savvides had invaded the pitch during the match. The first time he was wearing an overcoat, and AEK Athens officials claimed that Savvides threatened a referee. The second time the overcoat was gone, which revealed a holstered gun around his waist. Not surprisingly, this caused a bit of a hubbub. Savvides had already ordered his team to leave the pitch, and everyone else was ordered to disperse once the gun was identified and the game was suspended.

Greek soccer has been beset by violence both on and off the pitch. A match between PAOK Salonika and Olympiakos Piraeus was called off in February after the Olympiakos coach was struck by a “roll of paper” thrown from the stands. After this latest incident, Greek Deputy Culture and Sports Minister Georgios Vassiliadis stood by the suspension. From

Vassiliadis also said the suspension will be indefinite until everyone involved agrees to “much tighter rules on issues of security.”

Despite the firearm, PAOK Salonika was eventually declared the winner of the match two hours after the suspension when the referee reversed his decision. Hopefully the gun played no role in that.
