Congrats bro, it looked tho u were interview by the same guy that interviewed me glad u didn't bleeb like I did. I have learnt my mistake the hard way. All the best ajxii: Vo: Good Morning Me: Good Morning (Me not looking at him focused on bringing out my documents)
VO: Why are you going to the US? Me: I am going to the University of Oklahoma for masters in Electrical and Electronics Engineering. I will be concentrating on Control and Power systems.
VO: Why this course: Me: The biggest problem in the Nigerian power sector is Energy tracking and Energy fraud. Disco **stammered here and said** Distributing… **sorry** …distribution company can’t track the amount of energy consumed by their consumer. They …blah blah blah (I lost my train of thought). Me: I don’t know why am nervous.
VO: Smiles and lean forwards then replies … Calm down, I don’t want you to give a rehearsed answered Me: No, I am not, I am just trying to articulate my thoughts.
VO: OK Good.. go on Me: Genco… I mean generating company needs to be paid for energy produced and if the disco can’t track the amount of energy consumed by the consumers then we have a problem with revenue collection. I believe this course would provide me with the right skills to solve this problem. I would be providing automated tracking systems, smarts meter and … (Vo cuts in)
VO: How many schools did you apply to? Me: 3
VO: List them? Me: The University of Oklahoma, University of Tennessee, Tennessee Tech University.
VO: Why OU? Me: Sincerely, rankings. In terms of Quality of education, research interest and facilities, these schools meet my requirements. OU is ranked above the other rest, I have friends in Oklahoma so settling wouldn’t be an issue and the control in OU is combined with instrumentation, so technically OU provides me with more options.
VO: Are you married? Me: No
VO: Kids? Me: No
VO: How would you be funding? Me: (bringing out my prodigy award letter) I secured a student loan from prodigy finance.
VO: (Reaching for the letter) is the amount stated in the letter? Me: Yes
VO: What is the interest? Me: 10.8% per annum
VO: And how will be …. Never mind…I will be approving your visa (circles the white sheet) … Me: I was confused…did not hear anything…. I heard … 3days and VI. He passes me my I-20 and kept my passport in among other passports. I was confused and stood there waiting for my passport to be returned before I realized oo I might have gotten this Visa. |

I know I bleeb I was very tensed to be honest.... I got interviewed by the nice dude in window 7 even though he denied almost everybody before me I believe it all resulted to the fact that they weren't convincing and I think that also dropped my confidence level ..
VO: where are you going in the US Me: I am going to the university of new haven west haven Connecticut VO: what course : Me: masters in industrial engineering Why this course : in the field of industrial engineering job opportunities are limitless it is a good mix of both business and engineering and with the acquired practical and theoretical knowledge... VO cut VO: how many schools did you apply too and name them Me: 3 others university of Dayton Ohio, Rochester institute of technology Newyork Portland state university Oregone
So why university of new haven ?
I choose the university of new haven because of its flexible and dynamic industrial engineering program , Also prof Ali montazeer who I will be on his team has his research.....VO cuts me and then said I know you came prepared but don't talk to me as if you rehearsed your speech so I will know your real intention of wanting to To study in the US and I told him sir I am tensed to be honest and then he said yes I know but explain to me why u choose the skol in clear terms. The reason for her denial seems to be her sponsor for God knows what reason. But you can't say if one is denied he or she should not apply until after 6 months, that's a bad advice bc your first interview might not have been good due to some unforeseen circumstances let say anxiety. so are you saying if someone fall in such category he or she should not apply again until 6 months time? Ubah1: The V.O that interviewed you is nice. They do say it time without number if your story hasn't changed within the last 6 months, dont reapply. I think you were refused not less than 2months, let's say you came june 1st and you are going back home 30th or July, the probability of getting your visa approved is slim. The V.O will likely agree with his/her colleague decision and won't bother asking you much questions. That's a sign of respect to his colleague as nothing has really changed in your application. The best thing to do is wait. Wait till spring 2019 or fall 2019. You can aswear apply for PhD so that your profile will be stronger next time you appear before them. Don't give up, wish you the best in your future endeavours. |

Congratulations K234: Hello guys...I started following this thread sometime last month. I read every visa interview transcript (both approved and delayed) from Part 11, 12 and 13. Nairaland almost became my Bible..
I want to thank everyone for their contribution so far, I"m glad I stumbled on this thread because it really prepared me for my interview.
My visa was approved yesterday at the U.S consulate, Walter Carrington.
I actually applaud those who give very detailed transcripts starting from how they dressed up that day till the moment they heard the V.O's final decision. Unfortunately, I have a one-track mind especially on serious occasions, and it would amaze you to know that I hardly took notice of anything that was going on around me. What was on my mind was how to get the V O to say those magic words to me...I was so consumed by the thought that I did not even take notice of the window number (the face of the V.O is still in my memory though, for obvious reasons ). Now that I think of it, there is a possibility I was interviewed by the infamous black woman.
Here is my transcript...
Me: Good morning
V.O: Good morning, please pass your passport and I-20
(she typed for what seemed like eternity, raised her head and looked me straight in the eyes)
V.O: why do you want to concentrate on epidemiology?
Me: (smiling) i have always been passionate about epidemiology since the Ebola outbreak that happened in Nigeria in 2013. I felt that the epidemic exposed the weaknesses of the Nigerian Health sector; and it was my curiosity and concern as to how things could've been done differently that led me to begin to explore the field of public health
V.O: that"s good. So how many schools did u apply to?
Me: 6 schools
V.O: why did u choose this particular school?
Me: I chose Texas A&M because they are actively conducting research that are geared towards tackling health problems in rural populations which closely aligns with my career goal when I return to Nigeria. I want to be able to improve the health of rural populations and low-income populations in Nigeria..most people do not have access to proper health care system and there is also the issue of health disparity especially amongst low income groups... (she started nodding her head and typing)
Me: I also like the fact that they have a diverse student body and and inclusive, friendly community...
V.O: what is your highest level of education?
Me: I have a BSc. in microbiology
V.O: what year?
(I thought I heard "where?" so I mentioned the name of my alma mater and she repeated herself)
V.O: what year?
Me: oh... 2016
V.O: mention some courses you will be taking in your program that will help you in your career?
Me: I will be taking courses like introduction to epidemiology, biostatistics 1, data management and computing, introduction to health policy
V.O: did you take any tests?
Me: yes, i took the GRE and the TOEFL
V.O: Can I see your score report?
(I passed her my GRE Score report, she took a good look at it and passed it back to me).
V.O: so who is your sponsor?
Me: my mum
V.O: what does she do?
Me: She works with Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation
V.O: what does she do there?
Me: she is a classroom teacher in the NNPC staff school.
(she started squeezing her face and said sternly...
V.O: do you have an official bank statement showing her name?
Me: Yes
(I passed it to her, she went through it and passed it back)
V.O: Okay Madam, I will be issuing you your visa....
(I leaned closer to hear her very well in case my mind was playing some tricks)
V.O: pick up your passport in 3-4 working days at the circled location on this paper...have a lovely day
Me: (smiling sheepishly) Thank you. Have a nice day.
For those who are yet to go for their interview, I wish you success. We shall all celebrate. Cheers!! |

Congratulations Northeastern: F1 and F2 Visas approved this morning. We were the third to be interviewed by a guy with headphone; he granted the first and denied the second guy, the first was a lady and her young son for B1/B2 and the guy was for F1. Once he was done with the guy, he signaled us and Wifee and I stepped forward.
Us: Good morning
VO: Good morning
VO: Your documents
Me: I passed both passports and I 20s
VO: Which school are you going to?
Me: I am going to the UConn School of Business in Hartford, CT
VO: So what will you be doing after the program
Me: So I presently work in the investment management industry, I will be returning to Nigeria to work briefly in the investment management industry and later set up my own investment management firm.
VO: Why did you choose this school?
Me: I just smiled, first the program fits my interest, I work in the investment management industry and I am going for an MBA with a concentration in investment management. So I applied to four schools and got admitted into two, so my other reasons will be relative. The other school I got admitted to is in Boston, so it is more expensive to live in Boston than Hartford, I got a Graduate Assistantship that comes with complete tuition waiver, monthly stipend and a subsidized health insurance which is better than the $65,000 scholarship I got for the entire duration of the program in Boston and lastly, both programs have a student management fund, the Program in Boston has an Asset under Management of about $500,000 while the program in Hartford has an AUM of about $2,000,000. The advantage of working with a larger fund is that it allows you to invest in more stocks and sectors therefore increasing your experience.
VO: He faced my wife and asked “will you be staying with your husband for the entire duration of the program or you will be travelling in between?” (This was the only question she was asked).
Wife: I will be staying with him all through sir.
VO: Now facing me, how did you know about this Program?
Me: So the schools I applied to all match my interest, I used the FT 100 MBA ranking and the US News ranking I combined them with insights I got from several orientation from the Education USA and The MBA Tour held on October 7, 2017 in Lagos.
VO: I can see that you got a loan
Me: Yes, from MPower Finance.
VO: Do you have kids?
Me: No
VO: When will you be travelling?
Me: I will be travelling by the end of this month, so the orientation is scheduled for August 13, 2018. (Wifee told me on our way home that it is next month and not this month, so it was a mistake on my part)
VO: I have approved your Visas
Me: Thank you sir
Thanks to everyone on this thread, what is going on here is priceless. |

Take your documents to any courier company and they give you price. However, it's cheaper with NIPOST (use registered mail so that you can track your docs) |

ME: Good morning. VO: Good morning.
VO: pass me your passport. ME: gave her my passport, I-20, and SEVIS receipt.
VO: Why did you choose Tufts. ME: the research in energy storage and conversion at Tufts closely aligns with my research interest.
VO: what will study? ME: PhD in Mechanical Engineering.
VO: what's your second major? (She corrected her self on looking at my I-20)
VO: how will you fund your studies? ME: I got a full tuition waiver + (at this point she was no longer interested in what o was about to say again) RA which comes...(I stopped talk since she wasn't even interested again).
VO: can I see a letter from the school showing this funding? ME: gave her my admission letter.
VO: what do you do presently? ME: Working as a Technical Support Analyst in an IT firm.
VO: what's your research interest. ME: Energy storage.
VO: Are you married? NO: No
VO: where do you work? ME: Trefoil Networks. VO: okay, its an IT company right.
VO: I will be keeping your passport ( She already kept it the first time I gave it to her). So she smiled and said your Visa has been approved.
I heard everything she said afterwards but i did not just care.
Questions she did not ask.
How many school do you apply to? What will you do after your PhD? Will return back to Nigeria? (She probably did not want me to lie lol). |

Thank you very much sir , you made a lot of sense sir, everything you said has been noted I will be making adequate corrections... it's not just easy for someone like me to prove a point without talking too much lol, but Honestly sir you did and that is why you are a guru.. more grace to you sir EZEIGBO1OFIMO: great Choice; the school has $250 million+ in endowment, and industrial engineering sounds nice
you may want to add the number of admits and rejects quickly, so the conversation can forge ahead.
Forget about your fascinations, even admission officers don't want it read about your childhood fantasies in your SOP; also leave out the Princeton review ranking ( these vague rankings only serve to massage the University administrations ego ). while the dynamic nature and flexibility of the program is a good sell, you can tie the department's area of research and their strides in the industry. E.g ".. the modularisation of industrial projects, which has led to faster time to market ratio, has it's root at the university, so I'm fully assured that I'll be under the tutelage of the foremost industry pioneers... " or ".. Professor Ali, who I would be on his team, has his research area leading the frontiers of process engineering, giving me the best of industry and the academia" etc.. just think of yourself as a marketer trying to sell the school to the president maybe
Capital NO NO NO. The STEM field is to precious for you to rely on what's church member told you. Is the church member an engineer or academic?, then it would be better you state this persons profession instead. e.g "..Dr. jagbajantis, my long time mentor and chemical engineer is an alumnus of the school, suggested it amongst some others"
just summarise the bolded In a single sentence, nobody is interested in your inspiring speech
again, keep it short and simple. a straightforward sentence like. ".. a combination of optimization, risk management, and process engineering, is sure to put me at a good place, in the slowly but improving manufacturing sector here at home"
. . Overall, the transcripts sounds nice; but I'm not a VO, so what I say doesn't really matter, what matters is you being calm, and thinking quickly, instead of going to read out some crammed stuff ... Good Luck!! |

VO: So why are you going to the US?
I am going for my masters in industrial engineering at the university of New haven, West Haven, Connecticut.
VO: How many schools did you apply to?
3 others, Portland state university, university of Dayton Ohio, Rochester Institute of Technology Newyork
VO: Why University of New Haven?
Me: I chosed university of New Haven because of its dynamic and flexible industrial engineering program and i am also particularly interested in the research area of prof M Ali Montazer he has a research work on "simulation modeling of production systems and business operations" off which i am fascinated about. Moreso the University’s Career Development Center which has been named one of the best in the us by the Princeton Review enables students to learn how to effectively manage and develop their careers and i wish to benefit Immensely from it. Lastly i got 50% scholarship award to attend the school.
How did you get to know about the school?
Me: A church member who is an alumnus of the school recommended the school and i looked it up online to read more on the school curriculum and Standard.
Vo: What are your study plans? What will this program do for you?
Me: I would be taking 30 course units for a duration of 24months, with core courses such as Introduction to operations research, quality analysis, manufacturing analysis, Engineering Economic, Design stimulation, design and experiment and so on.
Industrial Engineering appeals to anything with areas for improvement.Employment opportunities are limitless, so therefore With the Acquired skills and knowledge gotten from my program it will open opportunities for a managerial work position here in Nigeria especially the manufacturing industries such as Innoson Motors, Unilever,PZ Cussons and Dangote cement and many others. These industries give preference to Industrial Engineers because of their wide range of capabilities in the work place.
VO: What are your plans at the end of your program?
Me: I'll be coming back to use the acquired knowledge and practical skills to assist in tackling the numerous challenges facing most industries in Nigeria most especially the manufacturing industry, According to the Nigeria vision 2020 the manufacturing sector provides the greatest opportunity to transform the Nigeria economy and Nigeria being the biggest market place in Africa with over 170 million populations ought to be a strong market for the manufacturing sector and i hope to be a major contributor to this cause.
