The battle is being fought on Ukrainian soil, which translates to structural damages and heavy casualty on Ukrainian civilians. The reverse would still be same if the war is being fought on Russian soil.

Other than that, Ukrainian soldiers has the capabilities to inflict severe damages on Russian troops. This they have been doing, little wonder the war is still dragging till today and will go on for a long time.

All the separatists they've been sponsoring in the Dunbas and Luhansk Region including annexing Crimea was to make sure Ukraine doesn't qualify to join NATO.
