Urhobo Indigenes of Warri south are up to half of the LGAs Indigenes, yes. But Warri south (Warri urban proper) itself does not really have much indigenes. The Indigenes are few in numbers.
Do u think Agbassa & Okere-Urhobo Indigenes are significant enough to cause a significant change to Urhobo numbers? I don't think so.

Ayodele Joseph Oritsegbubemi Oritsejafor, fondly called Papa Ayo Oritsejafor by many of his numerous admirers is the founding and Senior Pastor of Word of Life Bible Church, located in Warri, Nigeria. He became the national president of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN) on the 7TH February 2005, a position he held for five years.. He was elected President of CAN, Christian Association of Nigeria. As a result of this, he became the first Pentecostal leader to hold the two positions simultaneously. He is married to Hellen Oritsejafor and they are blessed with many children in the Lord. In this interview, he speaks about the history of Itsekiri people and other topics:

· what would you say is unique about the Itsekiri people of Warri kingdom?


First of all, it is very important to establish the fact that Christianity started in Nigeria in Warri kingdom. It is what the average Itsekiri man or woman knows but they don’t talk about it. One of the reasons they don’t talk about it is a lack of spirituality. The first church that was built in Nigeria was not in Abeokuta, Badagry or anywhere. It was built here in the 16th century. The ruins of it are still here.
The first Christian missionary that came here was the Roman Catholic. In fact, the first contact with a white man was here. The Itsekiri people are the first contact with the white man in Nigeria.
By the way, the second thing that many people in Itsekiri may not elaborate on is that Itsekiri is Yoruba. The Itsekiri language is a dialect of the Yoruba language. Itsekiri people migrated from Yorubaland. Some of them migrated directly from Ife. Some migrated from the riverine areas of Ijebu, and some migrated from Ondo. Some of them especially the ones that migrated from Ife, they migrated with the Ilaje.

The Ilaje stopped at a point but the Itsekiri continued and they ended up here in Warri.
Now, a few of them came from Benin Kingdom. The Benin connection came from the palace. The palace connection is still Yoruba at the end of the day because the first Oba of Benin was a son of Oduduwa.


The first Olu of Warri was a first son of the Oba of Benin. That’s the Benin connection. The Itsekiri, when they moved here, they came with their Ife. The upland Yoruba called it Ifa. We are the waterside Yoruba. Our people will call the other Yoruba, Iroke. They called the Oyo people Iroke and other Yoruba Iroke but the Yoruba called them Ara Oke. This history is very important because they are dying away. In those days, the Ife which the mainstream Yoruba will call Ifa was the god of divination. The Ife had told the Itsekiri people that a prince would come and become their king. Therefore, they stayed without a king for a very long time, in fact for many years.

They were waiting for that prince, eventually this prince who was the first son of the Oba of Benin was a grandson of Oduduwa. He was very proud so he had a lot of problems with Benin chiefs. They were going to kill him. His father who was the Oba of Benin, you know he was supposed to be the Oba of Benin after his father, but for his own protection, his father had to get him out of Benin Kingdom. He gave him about 70 chiefs. They smuggled him out, put him in a boat and they performed all kinds of rituals. They put him in a boat then sailed to Warri. When he ended up here, remember our own people were waiting for a prince, they have been waiting for years. When he arrived, they consulted their Ife again and the Ife says, “This is the prince”. So, that was how he became the first Olu of Warri. That was how the first Olu of Warri came about.
In those days, in the palace, in Warri kingdom, they used to speak Yoruba. The palace was 100% Yoruba. Don’t forget the Itsekiri language is a dialect of Yoruba land and therefore a Yoruba language as it is to this day. The Benin are not Yoruba; they are descendants of Oduduwa but the palace is Yoruba.

Isoko is not regarded as a distinct tribe in Nigeria but as a sub group of the urhobo people. Which is why you often see "urhobo-isoko" and not just "isoko".

That being said, with or without the Isokos, urhobos are still the largest tribe in delta state and no amount of self-deceit will change that.

Notwithstanding, the urhobos are not in any way laying claim to them. We stand on our own and don't need to be attached to them for whatever reasons.

When I was serving I was actually excited to hear from An Igala friend in camp who told me we have some similar cultural similarities regarding language.

In the end, outside 1 to 10 in Igala language which i merely understood, the rest sounded like a strange version of igbo language to me.


And some Igala actually speak igbo as second language.

As an outsider (a non-southerner) who was born and bred in Delta state. I think I should be in a better position to give some good conclusive opinions as regards Urhobo and Anioma comparison without any bias.

POPULATION

This is something I have thought about and argued time and over with many Deltans.
My conclusion is that Urhobos are more than Aniomas, but the margin is not wide. It is slim.
Urhobos had a great population explosion in the last 100 years. Urhobos have clearly been giving birth to more children than Aniomas in the last century.

Judging population of an ethnicity based on number of LGAs or population census is wrong.

Urhobo LGAs are more urbanized and cosmopolitan than Anioma LGAs and as such the figures will always favor Urhobo in this regard.
Also, from my observation, there are more Anioma people living outside Anioma land than Urhobos living outside Urhobo land.

Urhobos migrated more than Anioma people in the past. There were so many Urhobo migrants in rural Benin, Lagos (Ajegunle) and even as far as Jos & Liberia, there were large Urhobo communities. However, a large chunk of these migrant Urhobos returned back home within the 80s, 90s and millenial years due to the economic oil boom and great urbanization in the Warri environs.

Aniomas on the other hand have a strong migrant population in the SE. In urban Benin & Lagos, Aniomas most likely outnumber Urhobos. Jos is the only city outside Delta state that Urhobos will likely outnumber Aniomas in Nigeria.
Rural Benin still has a strong Urhobo population. Rural Ondo/Ogun still has a strong Urhobo population.

Asaba just started developing recently, so it will take much time for it drag back Anioma people in large numbers.


So, Urhobos should stop bragging with the population of their LGAs. No, cos as it stands, Aniomas travel out of their homeland more than Urhobos right now.

Aniomas too should stop bragging with their 9 LGAs cos it has nothing on Urhobo population.

I still think Urhobos are the majority by an increasing margin in Delta state. Most of the figures for urhobo population usually excludes warri south which contains the largest city in the state and the urhobo population should be around 40-50% percent there. Adding that would give them a very clear margin over the Anioma people plus the gap keeps increasing

Well, this isn't an issue we Nigerians should be talking about, in the western world, nobody knows Urhobo or itsekiri or Ijaws or Igbos or Hausa or Yoruba, they see all of us as BLACK PEOPLE FROM AFRICA.

I didn't want to comment on this thread because I don't want to seem biased for speaking the truth, but after reading some annoying comments here, I had to force myself.

There are some things I want to make clear, the percentage of Urhobo indigens in Warri is very small, very very small, Warri is owned by the Itsekiris and the Ijaws. Also, in terms of population, Delta Igbos are number one, except you want to add Isoko as part of Urhobo.

My mum is an Isoko woman and most of my friends are Isoko as well and I can tell you with all confidence, Isoko people do not agree that they are part of Urhobo, they prefer to be identified as Isoko and not Urhobo. If you call them Urhobo they'll argue with you.

The Urhobos are loud and generally like to claim ownership, they feel like they are superior to other ethnic groups in the state, they feel like they own the state eventhough they don't really have that much power.
