Deola Sagoe is a celebrity Nigerian fashion designer. I call her this because she has now become a celebrity icon in Nigerian fashion industry. She started designing in 1998 and received practically no support from her wealthy father. Currently, she now has a thriving fashion designing business called House of Deola Sagoe situated in Lagos with over 20 foreign staff (Chinese) and has won numerous awards including her participation at the just concluded New York Fashion week. She works with native Nigerian fabrics like “Adire” and “Aso Oke” in designing most of her clothes. She is one of the most influential tailors in Nigeria with extensive client base within and outside Nigeria. In a recent interview with Al Jazeera, Deola says; “my father told me if i have any idea how much i will make selling cars compared to selling clothes? But if that is what you want to do, then count me out. I will not be involved. So my solo journey began.” Her father started making money when he got his first job as a Toyota sales man back in 1971. He did a record sale of 40 cars in 4 weeks. 6 years later he took over the Toyota franchise in Nigeria. And since then, he never looked back!He is currently one of the biggest investors in Nigerian Tourism Industry. He wanted her to take work with him and one day take over his business empire but she stubbornly declined. Now, House of Deola Sagoe is the number one go-to by who is who in Nigeria for clothes designs and Her dresses can cost as much as N700,000 (per one). WOW! Her father practically told her she was wasting her time doing this business and when she starts winning awards, he became proud of her and recently, he admittedly said he never knew that “this was her calling”. This has proved that if you have a dream, don’t let anyone stop you. And with proper dedication and hard work, you will excel. For upcoming fashion designers, Deola Sagoe is one icon worth emulating. http://thenigerian.com.ng/index.php/2015/09/18/meet-the-nigerian-celebrity-tailor-whose-dress-costs-as-much-as-n700000/ Cc: Lalasticlala

Recently, i decided to conduct an interview and select some candidates who might be working with my organization. Currently we are trying to expand our operations and see how we can get new leads and probably close more deals. And from my survey, there are hundreds and possibly thousands of unemployed graduates here in Nairaland so i decided to concentrate on recruiting from here. Now because of the nature of the job and also with a view in cutting cost around physical recruitment exercise, I decided to conduct the whole process online. 567 applications where received. I had to employ the services an outside consultant to help with the process which i also fully participated. Below are my shocking experiences with job seekers in this forum. I pray they read this and improve on themselves. 1. CV and cover letter. I remember explicitly asking for their CV and cover letter to be forwarded to a particular email address. A huge percentage of the applicants just sent an empty email with their CV as an attachment. Not even an application letter. In case you dont know, a very quick assessment can be done on you by just reading your application or cover letter. You don't just attach your CV and forward to an email address without a cover letter. It means you are not serious and you may NEVER get called for an interview. 2. Many do not even know what they are applying for. For an example you are asked to apply for an administrative position. The subject of your email should not be "My CV". This is so annoying and disgusting. Those that manage to write a cover letter do not even make reference to the job position they are applying for. 3. Lack of communication skills. Now it is not enough to have a degree, you must learn to communicate. I sent out a pre-interview questionnaire to selected candidates and i just couldn't believe what i saw. So many job seekers do not know how to communicate and speak simple and clear English language. If you want to stand a better chance in job haunting, learn how to communicate. 4. Words abbreviations This is a very big problem. Social medial is good but i think it's now becoming a major problem. With the use of BBM, whatsapp, Facebook chat, etc, Nigerians are now addicted to abbreviating words. You see things like 'u', 'k', 'comin', etc. And in case you dont know it, this can cause a very big problem for you. A lot of candidates get disqualified because of this. Learn to write properly when communicating with someone. Stop being in a hurry to pass along your message. 5. Checking of emails. As a job seeker, you should always check your emails. Recruiters dont just send text messages, they also send emails. I did not screen alot of people because they did not check their emails to see if any information has been passed to them. You must always be on the look out. Dont submit your applications and go relaxing. These are some of the experiences i had recruiting here. Out of 567 applications, i could not pick up to 20 candidates as a result of all these. Sometimes, i begin to wonder if the problem is lack of jobs or laxity on the part of the applicants because i am so shocked and surprised that our graduates are this way. http://thenigerian.com.ng/index.php/2015/09/17/my-experiences-recruiting-nigerian-job-seekers-5-things-i-discovered/ |
I have been studying for weeks on blogging because i have decided to go into blogging. Thousands of Nigerians are "bloggers", but only a handfull really understands what it means to be a blogger. Many people preach that if you want to succeed in blogging, you must have a passion for it and do it without thinking about money. I am here to prove them wrong. I decided to go into bloging for some reasons. 1. Press release. I run several businesses which are mostly online and i know they are kick-asss. Often times i really want to do some press release and have some other online media talk about my start-up or ideas which by the way are currently serving hundreds of satisfied Nigerians. But one way or the other, i get the silent treatment. An example is how i contacted the editor of techpoint.ng severally regarding this but he constantly treated me like i dont exist. Well, am a web developer and an online business man. So, i have decided to get my own blog and do my press release whenever i want to. 2. Tutorials. I like dishing out free tutorials especially here on NL. But guess what, the mods keep banning me. So, i think it is way cooler if i can just set up my own platform where i publish my tutorials and interested people can have access. I love to be an influencer. 3. Money. I love making money. So my blog is going to be handled like any other business with the target of making money. If you are interested, then join me as i teach how to setup a world class blog and run it as a thriving business. My new blog will be a case study. Enough of blogging for passion. It's time to blog for money. You will be shocked at my findings and strategies. Are you in? |

Background Grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women) works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls, the empowerment of women and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security. Fifteen years after the passage of UN Security Council Resolution 1325, there is widespread concern that progress made at the normative and policy levels has not been translated into significant improvements in the lives of women and girls in conflict and post-conflict countries. Nigeria is no exception. Incessant violent conflict and high level of insecurity has over the years reverberated in various part of Northern Nigeria, leading to the death of many, destruction of properties and means of livelihood, abduction of vulnerable groups (especially women and girls), trauma and displacement. Women and children who bear the brunt of these crisis are often excluded in peace building and conflict resolution processes. In addition, women comprise about 50% of the Nigeria’s population but they represent an insignificant number in decision making processes, at all levels. In spite of the fact that the importance of women’s engagement in peace processes has been underscored in several international instruments, resolutions, conventions, and commitments by Member States, implementation has been very slow. Duties and Responsibilities Objective of the Assignment Under the overall guidance and supervision of the Programme Manager, Women Peace and Security and the WPS Section of UN Women Head Quarters, the Consultant will form and lead a team to undertake the studies in each of the three states, and offer options and experience drawn from international best practice. The Consultant will engage relevant stakeholders, including Government Ministries Department and Agencies (MDAs), CSOs, Development Partners, Security Agencies and exiting Peace Committees in each state, with clear collaborative roles in the implementation, monitoring and reporting of relevant elements of the peace architecture. The consultants will also assess the activities and plans of other donors – notably the National Stability and Reconciliation Programme of UK DfID – as well as of other UN Agencies such as UNDP, to ensure substantive coordination and synergy wherever possible. The specific objectives of the assignment is to review the existing peace and security architecture in Adamawa, Plateau and Gombe States from a gender and human rights perspective and provide recommendations to strengthen the system for sustainable peace and security. Tasks Form a technical research/review team, lead and coordinate the processes involved in the review of Peace and Security Architecture in Adamawa, Plateau and Gombe States; Undertake desk reviews of relevant peace and security literature and documentation in Nigeria, with special focus on gender dimension in Northern Nigeria; Undertake a gender analysis of existing peace and security architectures globally with the aim of documenting best practices and lessons learned; Review and document findings and lessons learned from other international experiences of integrating gender perspective in contexts of conflict and insecurity, and bring value addition into the Northern Nigeria WPS programme; Develop relevant research instruments and methodology; Engage local data collectors at federal and state levels to generate information required to strengthen existing peace and security architecture in target states from a gender perspective; Collect relevant gender disaggregated data at federal and state levels on existing peace and security mechanisms, including Early Warning and Early Response, Local Peace and Security structures and their capacity to reduce insecurity; Drawing from the baseline survey of the Northern Nigeria Women Peace and Security Programme, identify gaps and needs particularly in the engagement of women in peace and security in the three states of focus, and the impact of violent conflicts and insurgency in neighboring states of Yobe and Borno; Based on the findings of the baseline survey and other primary and secondary data, develop a Gender Sensitive Peace Architecture for each of the target states; Drawing from review findings, both locally and internationally, identify opportunities for mainstreaming gender perspectives in peace and security frameworks in Northern Nigeria. Methodology It is expected that the Consultant would adopt participatory methodologies at every stage of the process, involving all relevant stakeholders at federal and state levels. This will involve gap analysis, focus group discussions (where appropriate), community dialogue, key informant interviews (KIIs) with selected Stakeholders, memoranda from relevant stakeholders(especially the Civil Society Organizations), Validation/Review Meetings with Stakeholders, Desk Review of existing local, national and international documents and instruments in relevant areas, amongst others to achieve expected outputs. Happy Sunday people. Your questions are welcome. |
1k001:Nice. But I must insist, is it not time to reveal your product or what your start-up is about? I believe you have been doing some pitching and marketing, plus product display expose at stands in events. Why cant we here in NL know what the product is all about? You never can tell if my organization will become an instant paying customer or if i can recommend some potential customers. Or are you still scared your idea will be stolen? We are all itching to know.....let the cat out of the bag. ![]() |
1k001:Long time (on your thread, please give us an update). Government contract can come in various forms. For example, you can hustle a contract, and when it is approved and awarded to you, then you get paid by the government. However, this is not what i have in mind as i have already done one for the government and up till now (many months later) i am still expecting to be paid. The kind of government contract i am talking about is more like a government approval to carry out a project. The project will pay for itself, but it will be done under the coffers of "government". So, it is not bidding for contracts, but presenting a proposal to the government stating the project they need to carry out, and at the same time suggesting to them that you can carry out the project on their behalf. Let them know how the project can "fund" itself so they really dont need to bother about approving funds. At the end of the day, they give your company approval and necessary contract award documents, you execute the project, it adds to their portfolio (so they win more votes in the next election), they approve funding for the project which they also keep in their pockets cos the project can generate its own money, you make some millions on your own from the project, everybody is a winner! Such projects get approved faster if you know how to package it right. ![]() |
