Family / Happy Mothers’ Day To Super Mothers by DAVECENA(m): 12:50am On Apr 18, 2015 |
Catholics in Nigeria celebrate Mother’s Day. Some denominations celebrated Mother’s Day on the fourth Sunday of Lent. Some other countries, like America (May 11), are yet to celebrate Mother’s Day. Anyway, whether it is in advance or in arrears, I wish our beautiful and wonderful mothers a very happy Mother’s Day. I celebrate you on this day for your love, motherly care, patience, sacrifices, the discomfort you went through during pregnancy and pains at childbirth. I celebrate you for those sleepless nights and the pregnancies that created pot bellies out of your flat tummies. We might buy you gifts, take you out for dinner and spend quality time with you on Mother’s Day and at some other time, but we can never repay you for all you have done and gone through. Whatever we do is just a token of our appreciation and love. I dedicate today’s column to all super mothers who have gone the extra mile and made tremendous sacrifice in bringing up great children who are useful members of the society. Specifically, I celebrate the following women for their great and heroic deeds. Our first super mother is Mrs. Patricia Ogigirigi. Many years ago, you showed the world the way to go when you were holding very important positions in the church and your children were role models. One of your daughters got pregnant. More than 90 out of 100 women in your situation would have secretly aborted that pregnancy to save themselves the “shame”, maintain a false façade and continue to live a lie. But not you; you hauled defiance at what the world will think or say, you took her in and nurtured her until she gave birth. You took the baby from her and she went back to complete her studies. My respect and love for you have tripled since then. Thank you for being a real and true Christian mother; thank you for not throwing away the baby with the bath water. The last time I came around, the young boy has grown into a devastatingly handsome man. The world would have been much poorer had he been flushed down the drain as a fetus. Happy Mother’s Day, Super Mother Patricia Ogigirigi. A few months ago, I saw the photograph of Mrs. Hilda Adefarasin on the pages of newspapers on her 90th birthday. At 90, she still looks very trim, beautiful, elegant and royal. I had not seen or heard about her for a while and I was wondering until I saw the birthday photographs. I do not know her personally, but I read a lot about her in those days, especially when she was the president of the Women’s Society of Nigeria now National Council of Women’s societies. At a time when many women got carried away by the gale of women liberation and derailed, she came out in the media to put the records straight: women liberation does not mean women should shirk their marital and motherly responsibilities. She proved what she said on the home front. Her children have turned out great, whatever earlier hiccups there were. Three of them are pastors, winning souls for Christ. Happy Mother’s Day, Super Mother Hilda Adefarasin. Many years ago, there was a story of a molue that got burnt with the passengers on board on Third Mainland Bridge, Lagos. While the fire was raging, a nursing mother threw her toddler through the window of the burning bus. The mother was consumed in the inferno with other passengers, but the baby survived. Happy posthumous Mother’s Day to this caring and brave super mother. Mother Teresa of Calcutta was a Catholic nun. She never had any biological children, but went on to become the only mother thousands of sick, abandoned and poor people knew in Calcuta, India and around the world. She died in 1997. Happy posthumous Mother’s Day, Super Mother Teresa. On June 4, 1994, the Rev. (Mrs.) Christiana Bamidele George sowed a mustard seed which has grown into humongous shrub sheltering 100s of children. On this day she started the Little Saints Orphanage whose programmes over time have transformed over a 1000 lives. Currently the orphanage has over 100 children in four locations. Little Saints orphanage has a three-tier programme for the children: rehabilitation, reformation and reintegration. Little Saints has brought smiles to numerous homes of childless couples through adoption. Surprisingly, the couples adopting these children do not pay a dime to the orphanage, I learnt. Ultimately, Little Saints “vision is to erase the stigma attached to the orphan status and to create a leverage of equality for these group of children with their peers in the world, irrespective of the unfortunate circumstances they were born into. We dream of a greater Nigeria devoid of street beggars, street children and homeless women laboring for crumbs.” Without Mrs. George, these children would have faced an uncertain future, but because God lives through her, these children can face tomorrow. What made Mrs. George’s story more interesting to me was because of her privileged background. She is the first child of our former hard-working governor of the Midwest Region, Dr. Samuel Ogbemudia. She started her orphanage when it was not fashionable for the rich, famous and privileged to get their hands soiled with such issues concerning the “Wretched of the Earth.” Never mind, now it is become a fad for the rich and famous to spend birthdays and other landmark days with the less privileged. Happy Mother’s Day, Super Mother Christiana Bamidele George. Happy Mother’s Day to millions of other super mothers, especially those whose great deeds go unrecognized. God recognizes you. Happy Mother’s Day to all mothers who have made enormous sacrifices in bringing up children who are blessings to their families, their generations and the larger society. God bless you all now and always. source: http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/04/happy-mothers-day-to-super-mothers/ |

Travel / South Africans Attacks On Foreigners Increasing – Nigerian Union by DAVECENA(m): 3:09pm On Apr 17, 2015 |
The President of the Nigerian Union in South Africa, Mr Ikechukwu Anyene, said on Friday that xenophobic attacks on foreign nationals were on the increase. Anyene told the News Agency of Nigeria on phone from Pretoria, South Africa, that the mechanic workshop of a Nigerian was completely destroyed early on Friday in Johannesburg. “In the early hours of today (Friday), the mechanic workshop of a Nigerian, with 10 cars and all the tools inside, was destroyed by some South Africans. “The build up to the attack started last night when the South Africans started gathering in the neighbourhood of the Nigerian. “The Nigerians living there did not sleep and early today, the South Africans struck,’’ he said. Anyene said when the South African police intervened, the attackers dared them and opened fire. He said though the police chased them away, the attackers re-grouped and still carried out the act. “The attacks are spreading and Nigerians do not sleep again. They keep vigil to ensure that they are not taken unawares. “There is tension everywhere. Nigerians have closed their shops for fear of being attacked,”he said. Anyene urged the Federal Government to engage the South African authorities in dialogue with a view to halting the attacks immediately. “South Africa has lots of businesses in Nigeria and they are doing well. Also, South Africans live in Nigeria and it is on record that Nigerians have never carried out xenophobic attacks on fellow Africans,” he said. He said though the South African government had been responding to the attacks, it was not enough because more foreigners were being attacked every day. Anyene added, “Though no Nigerian has been killed, it may get to that because we have had close shaves with death. “The real truth is that Nigerians have lost so much in their businesses to the attacks. The time has come for the Nigerian government to make a categorical statement on these attacks. “We are not happy with what is happening and something urgent must be done to stop these attacks.” source: http://www.punchng.com/news/south-africans-attacks-on-foreigners-increasing-nigerian-union/ |

DUTSE – Governor Sule Lamido’s political woes may have deepened following the plan by his deputy,Alhaji Ahmad Mahmud to dump him for the opposition All Progressives Congress Party. Baring any last minute change, the deputy governor will be received along with some Lamido’s loyalists to the APC today , by chairman of the party, Alhaji Ado Sani Kiri, party’s gubernatorial candidate, Alhaji Badaru Abubakar and other APC chieftains in the state at his Gumel ward. Already, the Deputy Governor purported defection has triggered apprehension in the PDP camp as many of its supporters who spoke with Vanguard on condition of anonymity expressed surprise describing his action as “betrayal of trust.” Ahmed Mahmud was a two-term deputy governor of Jigawa state who was elected with Sule Lamido on the platform of the PDP. Other prominent politicians expected to join the APC are the two ex-Jigawa governors, Ibrahim Saminu Turaki and Ali Saad Birnin-Kudu, Ex-Senator Bello Maitama, some serving commissioners, special advisers and special assistants. source: http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/04/jigawa-deputy-governor-others-defect-to-apc/ |

Even though he is known as the poorest president, he strongly disagrees. He says, “I’m not the poorest president. The poorest is the one who needs a lot to live… My lifestyle is a consequence of my wounds. I’m the son of my history. There have been years when I would have been happy just to have a mattress.” This president’s example is a testament to how we should live our lives. We don’t need more things to be happy. In fact, some of the most wealthy people in the world, have their wealth stored in the currency of unselfishness, kindness, and true love. Maybe its time for a change? |

His part time farming job, keeps him aware of the struggles and life that most other people of his country go though. He also grows and then sells flowers from his farm. You can see him frequently driving his old 1987 Volkswagon Beetle. He doesn’t need a fancy Bentley, because he doesn’t care about having a extravagant appearance. His people are what matters and what matters are his people.

You might not believe it, but Jose Mujica, president of Uruguay since 2010, is known to be the world’s poorest president. Jose donates more then of 90% of his $12,000 per month salary to benefit the poor and to help small entrepreneurs. If we need more of anything in this world, it would be more people like this! This man doesn’t put value on his appearance or clothes. He is criticized for his posture and clothes, but Jose puts more value on other things in life instead. Sports / Gen. Buhari And Sports by DAVECENA(m): 10:06am On Apr 01, 2015 |
When the history of President Goodluck Jonathan is written, a lot of chapters will be dedicated to his numerous achievements in sports. It was during his regime that Nigeria won her first Africa Cup of Nations in 19 years, remarkably, outside the shores of the country. Before then, Nigeria won the trophy in 1980 and the last triumph in Tunisia ‘ 94 among others. Definitely, General Mohammadu Buhari has a tall order ahead of him if his predecessor’s track record is anything to go by. Luckily, the President-elect is not a fresher when it comes to governance. As a former Head of State(under the military), Buhari welcomed the 1985 all-conquering Golden Eaglets from China with the first FIFA/JVC U-16 World Cup. That the team is known today as Golden Eaglets was a coinage by General Buhari when he received the team at the National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos. Nduka Ugbade who captained that historic team is currently an assistant to the national U-20 coach, Manu Garba. He was also part of the crew that won the FIFA U-17 World Cup in UAE. Buhari’s love for sports has not been loud, but it is on record that he made a surprise appearance at the Abuja National Stadium when Nigeria hosted Brazil in an international friendly. It was during President Olusegun Obasanjo’s regime when Buhari was in the opposition. No one can say, for sure, where the retired General would position sports in the scheme of things as throughout his campaign for this election, not a word was said on sports. The President-elect must however note that sports form a very critical sector in the life of the nation. Those who actively engage in sports are the youth who are the future of the nation. Sports today is more that just a pastime. Sport is a multi billion dollar industry which can offer employment to millions of our youths. The sports sector deserves the best brains. Seasoned brains that can turn the fortunes of our sports around. Sports is practical and results are the only determining factor that influences team selection, appointments. The President-elect must therefore avoid considerations other than excellence in making appointments to the sector. source: http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/04/gen-buhari-and-sports/

Politics / Exclusion: YDP Calls For Cancellation Of Poll Results by DAVECENA(m): 4:00am On Mar 31, 2015 |
The Young Democratic Party, YDP, has called for the immediate cancellation of the 2015 elections, saying its exclusion by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from the ballot papers fell short of the Electoral law. National leader of YDP, Henry Nwabueze in a statement made available in Abuja, said the Prof. Jega led INEC deliberately refused to include YDP in the ballot even when it was clear that YDP had fulfilled the requirements to be so included in the ballots having been proclaimed a political party. “In compliance with the law, YDP submitted the list of its candidates to INEC for this 2015 General elections. Today the Young Democratic Party regret to inform Nigerians that INEC has failed because it unlawfully refused to include YDP in the 2015 General election Ballot paper. By this, INEC is practicing democracy of the few, by the few and for the few. Accordingly, YDP calls on the idependent INEC to cancel the just concluded March 28, 2015 Presidential and National Assembly elections and refrain from announcing the results, including the names of the winners or losers in that election. “Indeed, by virtue of the Electoral Act, Section 78, subsection 4, YDP became a registered political party in Nigeria as of May 2, 2014. Although INEC is fully aware of this fact and inspite of numerous notifications, it nevertheless proceeded, against common sense and reason to exclude YDP in this 2015 General election. ” This action of INEC is deliberate, violative of the Electoral Act, violative of the constitution and quite frankly, offensive to all notions of fair play and justice. In view of the unlawful exclusion of YDP a lawfully registered political party in violation of the electoral act and a subsisting federal high court judgement, the leadership of YDP and its NEC has resolved to proceed to court to seek for cancellation of the March 28 presidential election and conduct of fresh polls to include YDP,” Nwabueze stated. It said by so doing, the INEC had disenfranchised several Nigerians and infringed on their fundamental rights of association as well as the right to function as a political party. “We cannot as law abiding citizens, members and leaders of a duly registered political party fold our arms and allow INEC to deny us our constitutionally guaranteed right to present and field candidates for elective offices in Nigeria,” the YDP national leader stated. source: http://leadership.ng/news/421928/exclusion-ydp-calls-for-cancellation-of-poll-results 1 Like 1 Share |
