Port Harcourt – The Nigerian Union in South Africa said on Saturday that Nigerians lost more than 4.6 million Rand (N84 million) to xenophobic attacks . The President of Nigerian Union in South Africa, Mr Ikechukwu Anyene, on phone from Pretoria, South Africa, said that the losses were initially put at 1.2 million Rand ( N21 million). ‘’ The Nigerian Union in South Africa has completed documentation of the losses suffered by Nigerians to xenophobic attacks. ‘’ Nigerians lost more than 4.6 million Rand or N84 million during the attacks. ’ A mechanic workshop owned by a Nigerian in Jeppes, near Johannesburg, for example was completely burnt with 11 cars inside it. “ The loss is put at more than one million Rand or N20 million,’’ he said. Anyene said the Union had compiled the losses and given the list to Nigeria’s Consul-General to South Africa. He said Nigerian victims of the attacks needed urgent assistance to re-settle because many had lost their means of livelihood. ‘’ The Consul-General has travelled to Nigeria and we appeal to the Federal Government to do something urgent to assist Nigerians affected by the attacks. ‘’ We have made representations to the Federal government . “ We are also hoping that working with the South African government, there will be a way to compensate the affected Nigerians so as to enable them go back to their normal lives. ‘’ The tension is less now. The South African government has come out in full force to check the attacks,’’ he said. Anyene said the losses suffered by Nigerians were in the form of vandalised mechanic workshops, burnt mechanic workshops, looted shops as well as stolen and burnt cars. ‘’ More than 50 Nigerians were displaced during the attacks. The Union has assisted them to return home. ‘’ The Union is also planning to assist a family to move to a new accommodation because the present home is not safe,’’ he said. He said the Union carried out a proper documentation of the attacks, with pictures and other relevant documents stored to capture the incidents. ABUJA- FORMER National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur has attributed the defeat of the party by the All Progressives Congress, APC during the March 28 and April 11 general elections, to what he termed, failure on the part of the leadership to adhere to his warning on the looming loss. Alhaji Bamanga Tukur and President Goodluck Jonathan Tukur who noted that he was having the last laugh over the party’s defeat in the elections, stressed that the party ignored his warning and refused to mend its ways. In a statement yesterday in Abuja, Tukur stressed that he had warned the party in 2013 that it will suffer defeat in the 2015 general election if the leaders refuse to change their ways and allow for internal democracy within the party. In the statement titled: “PDP- Were you not warned?” the former PDP chairman reminded the party leadership of the speech he read at the PDP National Executive Committee [NEC] meeting of Thursday, June 20, 2013, which he presided over as chairman. Tukur who noted that he had warned his fellow party leaders and members to have a change of attitude if the party must succeed, said, “In our efforts to achieve success, we must rededicate our genuine political believes, change our attitudes and identify our political needs. These good values cannot be realized without accepting the supremacy of the party constitution as key instrument that ensures progress, stability and internal discipline. The former National chairman who also drew their attention to his words, said, “we must strengthen our democracy through determination, not personalization, correction, not manipulation, collectivism, not individualism and sacrifice, not disservice. “If these pronouncements are substantial then, the party should quickly take urgent steps to achieve higher levels, at least by coming to terms with democratic norms and practices.” Tukur argued that he also asked party members to accord President Goodluck Jonathan some measure of respect, saying, “We owe ourselves a duty to protect, project and support our President to leave behind, a lasting legacy for Nigerians,” while reminding them of the promises made on the PDP journey. source: http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/04/i-warned-you-on-looming-defeat-tukur-to-pdp/

The All Progressives Congress on Wednesday formally shut its doors against members of the Peoples Democratic Party wishing to join its ranks. The party also enjoined members and leaders of the ruling party to stay put where they are and rebuild their party to play its new found role as the main opposition party. It admonished the PDP to come to terms with the cold, hard reality that its fortunes have since plummeted and that it is now in opposition. The APC made its position public in a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, in Abuja. According to the APC, the leadership of the PDP is not even waiting to be approached before fleeing to the APC. Mohammed said, “PDP leaders and members are falling over themselves shamelessly and swearing undying allegiance to the APC. “Well, in case they did not get the message of the President-elect and our National Chairman, we want to repeat it in very blunt terms: PDP leaders and members, you are not welcome in APC. “Please stay in your party, but if – as we suspect – you cannot survive in opposition, then, take a walk, quit politics.”Mohammed was reacting to a communiqué issued by the PDP, in which it alleged that the APC was harassing its members and that it was trying to turn Nigeria into one party state. The APC said the fact that the PDP devoted a substantial part of the communiqué, issued after the inaugural meeting of the its National Working Committee and Governors/Senators-elect, complaining about alleged harassment and intimidation by the APC, instead of strategizing, shows that it was yet to come to terms with the reality on ground. It also observed that the out-going ruling party still does not understand the enormity of the challenges awaiting it as an opposition party.Mohammed said, “The truth of the matter is that the PDP is scared stiff of being in opposition. We don’t blame them as they have neither the capacity nor the commitment to be in opposition. “A party that stood for nothing but looting and rent collection will naturally be afraid of being in opposition, where there is nothing to loot or rent to collect.”The APC also admonished the PDP to stop whining over an alleged plan by the APC to use the Election Petition Tribunals ‘to truncate and subvert the freely given mandate by the people in the states and constituencies’, saying it amounts to blackmail. source: http://www.punchng.com/news/apc-shuts-its-doors-against-pdp-defectors/ |

Today even after passing nearly sixty years of that issue the Human rights Advocates agree that the exact implication of Human Rights is still not more than a dream. Catholics in Nigeria celebrate Mother’s Day. Some denominations celebrated Mother’s Day on the fourth Sunday of Lent. Some other countries, like America (May 11), are yet to celebrate Mother’s Day. Anyway, whether it is in advance or in arrears, I wish our beautiful and wonderful mothers a very happy Mother’s Day. I celebrate you on this day for your love, motherly care, patience, sacrifices, the discomfort you went through during pregnancy and pains at childbirth. I celebrate you for those sleepless nights and the pregnancies that created pot bellies out of your flat tummies. We might buy you gifts, take you out for dinner and spend quality time with you on Mother’s Day and at some other time, but we can never repay you for all you have done and gone through. Whatever we do is just a token of our appreciation and love. I dedicate today’s column to all super mothers who have gone the extra mile and made tremendous sacrifice in bringing up great children who are useful members of the society. Specifically, I celebrate the following women for their great and heroic deeds. Our first super mother is Mrs. Patricia Ogigirigi. Many years ago, you showed the world the way to go when you were holding very important positions in the church and your children were role models. One of your daughters got pregnant. More than 90 out of 100 women in your situation would have secretly aborted that pregnancy to save themselves the “shame”, maintain a false façade and continue to live a lie. But not you; you hauled defiance at what the world will think or say, you took her in and nurtured her until she gave birth. You took the baby from her and she went back to complete her studies. My respect and love for you have tripled since then. Thank you for being a real and true Christian mother; thank you for not throwing away the baby with the bath water. The last time I came around, the young boy has grown into a devastatingly handsome man. The world would have been much poorer had he been flushed down the drain as a fetus. Happy Mother’s Day, Super Mother Patricia Ogigirigi. A few months ago, I saw the photograph of Mrs. Hilda Adefarasin on the pages of newspapers on her 90th birthday. At 90, she still looks very trim, beautiful, elegant and royal. I had not seen or heard about her for a while and I was wondering until I saw the birthday photographs. I do not know her personally, but I read a lot about her in those days, especially when she was the president of the Women’s Society of Nigeria now National Council of Women’s societies. At a time when many women got carried away by the gale of women liberation and derailed, she came out in the media to put the records straight: women liberation does not mean women should shirk their marital and motherly responsibilities. She proved what she said on the home front. Her children have turned out great, whatever earlier hiccups there were. Three of them are pastors, winning souls for Christ. Happy Mother’s Day, Super Mother Hilda Adefarasin. Many years ago, there was a story of a molue that got burnt with the passengers on board on Third Mainland Bridge, Lagos. While the fire was raging, a nursing mother threw her toddler through the window of the burning bus. The mother was consumed in the inferno with other passengers, but the baby survived. Happy posthumous Mother’s Day to this caring and brave super mother. Mother Teresa of Calcutta was a Catholic nun. She never had any biological children, but went on to become the only mother thousands of sick, abandoned and poor people knew in Calcuta, India and around the world. She died in 1997. Happy posthumous Mother’s Day, Super Mother Teresa. On June 4, 1994, the Rev. (Mrs.) Christiana Bamidele George sowed a mustard seed which has grown into humongous shrub sheltering 100s of children. On this day she started the Little Saints Orphanage whose programmes over time have transformed over a 1000 lives. Currently the orphanage has over 100 children in four locations. Little Saints orphanage has a three-tier programme for the children: rehabilitation, reformation and reintegration. Little Saints has brought smiles to numerous homes of childless couples through adoption. Surprisingly, the couples adopting these children do not pay a dime to the orphanage, I learnt. Ultimately, Little Saints “vision is to erase the stigma attached to the orphan status and to create a leverage of equality for these group of children with their peers in the world, irrespective of the unfortunate circumstances they were born into. We dream of a greater Nigeria devoid of street beggars, street children and homeless women laboring for crumbs.” Without Mrs. George, these children would have faced an uncertain future, but because God lives through her, these children can face tomorrow. What made Mrs. George’s story more interesting to me was because of her privileged background. She is the first child of our former hard-working governor of the Midwest Region, Dr. Samuel Ogbemudia. She started her orphanage when it was not fashionable for the rich, famous and privileged to get their hands soiled with such issues concerning the “Wretched of the Earth.” Never mind, now it is become a fad for the rich and famous to spend birthdays and other landmark days with the less privileged. Happy Mother’s Day, Super Mother Christiana Bamidele George. Happy Mother’s Day to millions of other super mothers, especially those whose great deeds go unrecognized. God recognizes you. Happy Mother’s Day to all mothers who have made enormous sacrifices in bringing up children who are blessings to their families, their generations and the larger society. God bless you all now and always. source: http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/04/happy-mothers-day-to-super-mothers/ |

The President of the Nigerian Union in South Africa, Mr Ikechukwu Anyene, said on Friday that xenophobic attacks on foreign nationals were on the increase. Anyene told the News Agency of Nigeria on phone from Pretoria, South Africa, that the mechanic workshop of a Nigerian was completely destroyed early on Friday in Johannesburg. “In the early hours of today (Friday), the mechanic workshop of a Nigerian, with 10 cars and all the tools inside, was destroyed by some South Africans. “The build up to the attack started last night when the South Africans started gathering in the neighbourhood of the Nigerian. “The Nigerians living there did not sleep and early today, the South Africans struck,’’ he said. Anyene said when the South African police intervened, the attackers dared them and opened fire. He said though the police chased them away, the attackers re-grouped and still carried out the act. “The attacks are spreading and Nigerians do not sleep again. They keep vigil to ensure that they are not taken unawares. “There is tension everywhere. Nigerians have closed their shops for fear of being attacked,”he said. Anyene urged the Federal Government to engage the South African authorities in dialogue with a view to halting the attacks immediately. “South Africa has lots of businesses in Nigeria and they are doing well. Also, South Africans live in Nigeria and it is on record that Nigerians have never carried out xenophobic attacks on fellow Africans,” he said. He said though the South African government had been responding to the attacks, it was not enough because more foreigners were being attacked every day. Anyene added, “Though no Nigerian has been killed, it may get to that because we have had close shaves with death. “The real truth is that Nigerians have lost so much in their businesses to the attacks. The time has come for the Nigerian government to make a categorical statement on these attacks. “We are not happy with what is happening and something urgent must be done to stop these attacks.” source: http://www.punchng.com/news/south-africans-attacks-on-foreigners-increasing-nigerian-union/ |
