Commissioning signboard in this era Mehnn they deserve more than this!!!! |
There’ s a ton of evidence to support the assertion that one can never understand Nigerian politics or its politicians. So we introduce exhibit Z , the latest to join the growing pile of evidence . The Benue State government recently commissioned a billboard donated to the Benue state ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment by a Lecturer in the Department of Fine and Applied Arts, College of Education Katsina-Ala . Governor Samuel Ortom was represented by the acting Secretary to the State Government ( SSG) , Dr Bem Melladu at the commissioning of the billboard It still feels a little bit bizarre. source: www.informationng.com/2016/10/benue-state-just-commissioned-signboard.html?utm_source=&utm_medium=twitter

Nigeria continued their impressive rise in football after climbing to 60th in the latest FIFA Rankings, which were released by the world football body on Thursday. Three-time African champions moved up four spots in the rankings from 64 to 60, while their 2018 World Cup qualifying opponents Algeria and Cameroon retained their previous spots. The other team in their group, Zambia, failed to progress in the rankings. The Super Eagles are also ranked 11th in Africa, after their 1-0 victory at home against Tanzania in September in an inconsequential Gabon 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier was followed by a 2-1 victory over Zambia in their opening Russia 2018 World Cup qualifiers in Ndola on African champions Ivory Coast are first on the continent followed by Senegal. Algeria, who the Eagles will host in Uyo in next month’s second Russia 2018 World Cup qualifier, remain 35th in the world. They played a 1-1 draw with Cameroon in their first World Cup qualifier at home. The Algerians also remain third in Africa. The Cameroonians also retained their 59th position, which they held in September, to remain in the top 10 teams on the continent. Zambia however dropped two places from 92nd to 94th in the latest ranking. Ivory Coast moved up three places to be ranked 31st in the world while Senegal climbed seven spots from 39th to 32nd in the world. Tunisia, who are fourth in Africa, went up four places from 42nd to 38th while Ghana dropped two places from 43rd to 45th. Egypt, DR Congo, Congo and Mali complete the top nine teams in Africa. Argentina maintained their number one position while Germany replaced Belgium as the second best team in the world. Brazil are now third while the Belgians have dropped to the fourth position on the ranking table. Colombia, Chile, France, Portugal, Uruguay and Spain complete the top 10 in the world. 9. source: punchng.com/fifa-rankings-nigeria-move/

Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose has declared that any cow confiscated under the State Grazing Regulation Law will be slaughtered and shared to the people as part of the “Stomach Infrastructure” policy of his administration. The governor who disclosed this on Thursday in Ado Ekiti during the inauguration of Ekiti Grazing Enforcement Marshals (EGEM) said herdsmen caught grazing their cattle beyond the 6.00 pm risks six months jail while their animals will be confiscated. Fayose explained that the setting up of the EGEM force was a further step to nip the killing of innocent people and destruction of their means of livelihood by armed herdsmen in the bud. The EGEM men thrilled the audience with their parade while local hunters also performed at the ceremony. Some of the marshals displayed placards some of which read “No To Terrorism By Herdsmen”, Fayose Is Working, Ekiti Is Moving”, among others. Fayose who were an olive green long sleeve shirt with a camouflage fez cap to match explained that the marshals are not to carry arms and therefore would collaborate with security agencies empowered by law to carry arms to tackle armed cattle rearers. He said: ”We have a right to life and to survive and holding things for our survival especially peasant farmers, whose means of livelihood are taken away by cattle feeding on their crops. If the gains of peasant farmers are taken away in a jiffy, that is condemnable. “We will bring to a permanent end, the situation whereby some people take away the means of livelihood of others. “On August 29, 2016, the Anti-Grazing Bill was passed by the House of Assembly and the bill was signed into law by me on August 30. Some people go as far as grazing in the night when farmers are no longer at their farms. “Any cattle found grazing after the time stipulated by the law will be confiscated by the government.Such cattle will be sold or killed on the spot and shared to people as part of our Stomach Infrastructure programme,” he said. The governor had Wednesday last week personally stopped open grazing along Afao Road and supervised the “arrest” of a cow on his way to commissioning projects in Ikole Ekiti. Fayose contended that 10, 000 cattle could not compensate for the life of the human being lost to a conflict between herdsmen and local farmers. While frowning at cattle rustling by some people, Fayose added that the law was in the interest of cattle rearers too, as their operations would be streamlined. The governor added that the phone numbers of the marshals would be made public and warned the marshals against going beyond their mandate. “This is not an opportunity to harass or intimidate innocent people. You are to enforce the law and not to break it. Anybody found going beyond his bounds would be dealt with accordingly,” he stressed. In her opening remarks, the Secretary to the State Government, Dr Modupe Alade, said the law had helped in curbing incessant attacks on local farmers by herdsmen and feasting on crops by cattle. The Chairman, Hunters Association, Ikole Local Government, Joseph Osasona, commended Fayose for the initiative. Osasona recalled that it was the prompt intervention of the governor in Oke Ako-Ekiti early in the year when some armed herdsmen attacked the people, that sent a strong signal to lawbreakers to stay away from the state. He noted that it was inhuman for anybody to jeopardise the lives and means of livelihood of others because he wants to rear cattle. source: https://www.today.ng/news/nigeria/200809/confiscated-cows-stomach-infrastructure-fayose

Primary schools throughout Nigeria resumed for the first term of the current school year shortly after the Sallah holidays in September 2016, with many Nigerians eager to see the commencement of school feeding involving 5.5 million pupils nationwide. School feeding was one of the major programmes for which N500 billion was budgeted for 2016. Before the resumption of schools, the Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, flanked by two All Progressive Congress (APC) governors had pronounced in Aso Rock, on June 9, 2016, that the food programme would commence on time. Then in July, Mrs. Abimbola Adesanmi, National Manager of the programme, had also repeated the same promise. We expressed our skepticism regarding the take-off date of the programme for two reasons. First, we were almost certain that the funds might not be available to execute the Social Welfare Programme (SWP). We felt the 2016 budget was over-ambitious and most of the promises would not be fulfilled this year. Second, we raised questions about the choice of schools which would benefit, and the logistics of supplying those schools in remote areas on a daily basis. Federal Government officials dismissed these legitimate concerns. In September, the Minister of Finance announced that N70 billion had been released to Mrs. Maryam Uwais, the wife of the former Chief Justice of Nigeria, who is in charge of the SWP. That was a mere 14 per cent of the entire year’s budget; there was no guarantee of more funds being received. That same September, the House of Representatives summoned Uwais wanting to know the details of SWP. She asked the House to give her more time. By that time it required no rocket science intelligence to know that the SWP, and especially the school feeding component, were in trouble for the reasons we had earlier cautioned the Federal Government. As it is, October will end without food for the 5.5 million children. It may not effectively start before December 2016. The Buhari administration, like other governments before it, is beginning to realise that good intentions are never enough to govern a country successfully. Good organisation based on sound homework and grassroots knowledge of Nigeria are the ingredients for success. It is doubtful if any of the managers of this programme is familiar with rural life – which is where most of the 5.5 million pupils needing free food are located. It is impossible to manage well without adequate knowledge and funds availability. We hope the Federal Government will learn from its blunders of this year and prepare for a more credible implementation of the entire SWP package, particularly the school feeding programme. It will be a major item to assess this regime. source: www.vanguardngr.com/2016/10/fg-misses-school-feeding-take-off-target/ |

A giant panda believed to have been the oldest ever kept in captivity has died at the age of 38, officials say. The death of Jia Jia, whose age in human terms was more than 100 years, was announced by the Hong Kong theme park where she lived. Her condition had worsened rapidly in recent weeks and she had lost her appetite, the park said. She was put down by vets at Ocean Park, her home since 1999. "She was a member of our family and she will be deeply missed... she has served as an important animal ambassador for her species," the park said in a statement. The park said that in the last two weeks, Jia Jia's daily food intake had dropped from over 10kg to less than 3kg per day, and she had lost weight. "Over the past few days, she has been spending less time awake and showing no interest in food or fluids. "Her condition became worse this morning. Jia Jia was not able to walk about without difficulties and spent the day laying down." Vets took the decision to put the giant panda down to prevent suffering, the park said. In a statement obtained by BBC Chinese, a Hong Kong government spokesman thanked the park for providing Jia Jia with care and support and added that it was "saddened" by the news. The park in Hong Kong held a high-profile celebration for Jia Jia's 37th birthday at her enclosure in July 2015. Born in 1978 in the wild in Sichuan, China, Jia Jia was given to Hong Kong in 1999 to mark the semi-autonomous city's handover by Britain two years earlier. Most parents dream of what they want their child to be like and the kind of adult they want them to grow into. They try and mould you into the person they want you to become by teaching you and guiding you as you grow, giving you the proper foundations. Cecil Chao, billionaire and owner of Cheuk Nang Holdings Ltd., is trying to change his already grown daughter. She has been in a lesbian civil partnership for a decade with her partner Sean Eav. Her father made headlines when he offered $60 million HKD for a man to convince his daughter to marry them. He said in an interview ‘I don’t want to interfere with my daughter’s private life. I only hope for her to have a good marriage and children as well as inherit my business’. He also said he believes that it is not too late to change to her sexuality. Gigi has written a letter to her father in response to him doubling the dowry he had originally offered. Her letter has been published in a few Hong Kong newspapers. ‘Since Dad thinks it’s so easy for me to switch from gay to straight, I should just leave it for him to demonstrate. I think I’ll marry a man when he marries a man’ she wrote. She understands that her preference may be difficult for him to understand and understands his response. However it doesn’t look like she’s going to be changing herself for her father. ‘I’m sorry to mislead you to think I was only in a lesbian relationship because there was a shortage of good, suitable men in Hong Kong,’ she wrote. ‘There are plenty of good men, they are just not for me.’ source: www.financialwatchngr.com/2016/10/15/hong-kong-billionaire-is-offering-180000000-to-any-man-willing-to-marry-his-daughter/

Politics can be defined as the art or science of government or governing, especially the governing of a political entity, such as a nation, and the administration and control of its internal and external affairs. In other words,it is an activity aimed at improving someone's status or increasing power within an organisation. A renowned scholar Haroldz Dwight Lasswell defined politics as "who gets what, when and how",this indicates that the nature of politics is about the distribution of power in a society. Politics however encompasses the various processes through which government or school authority responds to pressure from larger society in particular by allocating benefits, rewards or penalties. Personal research has proven that 6 in 10 persons on campus have reservations about campus politics and if given the opportunity will term it a "MISS".But we must come to understand that it is a force that will continue to play its role in shaping our future, profession, life etc.whether we desire it or not. Most interestingly,I'll like to have us take a look at the major cause of this lack of enthusiasm in politics to helping us lose hold of the powerful grip of the "Miss" syndrome. The notable term for this insensitivity on and off campus is known as Political Apathy, which is the indifference on the part of citizens of any country with regard to their attitude towards political activities. The percentage of political enthusiasts is gradually reducing as we lose grounds to the "politics is a dirty game" advocates. Although we view politics as a "Dirty game" and probably not for the calm ladies and gents, but it is viewed so because we have allowed our apathy to give in to the supposed corrupt personalities who dominate politics and take decisions which affects our well-being positively or negatively without generating reactions from the students. Thus, if I was incurious about politics, the very activity through which my student association, school can respond to my needs and pressure, then I cannot complain when the body doesn't meet my needs or hearken to my pressure. If I disengage myself from politics, then I'm throwing away my powers to decide how benefits, rewards and penalties which aren't far fetched are allocated. We must also remember that whenever a man cast his eyes on an office, rottenness obviously sets in. In conclusion, Having made my point,I urge readers to be a part of the campus politics enthusiasts by being politically conscious. Remember, indecision is a decision itself. Make a conscious choice that politics is not for a selected few and should never be treated with Hit or Miss affair. It is a necessity and Quintessential. By: Mark Uduosa |
