People forget that from 1996, when the ANC govt finally dug us out of junk status since 87, we experienced more continuous growth than in any period in SA history, until Zuma came along in 2008.

Apartheid apologists of course will tell you that SA then was a 1st world country. But that's because those stats counted only 4 million whites. What they'll also not tell you is that the wealth of that segment of the population has actually tripled since 1996. And that the middle class has actually expanded, with millions of black Saffers joining that strata.

None of that excuses the many current fvck-ups of course, but simple binaries aren't helpful in understanding complex phenomena.

R3.5bn is a pittance when looking at the total health budget. Our problem is not shortage of funds, it's wastage of funds. Hell, just this week Tembisa Hospital alone is in the news for pissing away R1 billion.

World bank lending rates for Africa are crazy, for some countries it's over 10% while they give industrialised countries in lower than 5%. Chinas loans to Africa are below 10%. But they are the ones accused of trapping Africa in debt

UN secretary-general calls on Nigeria to investigate report of forced abortions

(Reuters) -United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called on Nigerian authorities to investigate allegations of systemic and coerced abortions reportedly perpetrated by the Nigerian army, U.N spokesman Stephane Dujarric said on Friday.

Reuters reported on Wednesday that the Nigerian Army has run a secret, systematic and illegal abortion programme in the country’s northeast since at least 2013.

The programme involved terminating at least 10,000 pregnancies among women and girls, many of whom had been kidnapped and raped by Islamist militants, according to dozens of witness accounts and documentation reviewed by Reuters.

“The Secretary-General takes note with concern of the allegations of systemic and coerced abortions reportedly perpetrated by the Nigerian Army against women and girls who had already been victimized by Boko Haram,” Dujarric said in an email to Reuters.

He called for a thorough investigation and “immediate remedial actions and accountability measures,” if such measures were necessary.

“We call on the Nigerian authorities to fully investigate these allegations and make sure there’s accountability,” Dujarric told reporters later on Friday.

A U.S. State Department spokesperson said the Biden administration was “deeply troubled.”

“Our embassy in Abuja is seeking further information, including from the government of Nigeria and stakeholders working in this space,” the spokesperson said. “We have encouraged the government of Nigeria to take the allegations seriously and to conduct a thorough and transparent investigation, and we will continue to do so.”

Nigeria’s defence chief said on Thursday the military will not investigate the report, saying it was not true. The Nigerian government has not responded publicly to the story.

Nigeria’s Information Minister Lai Mohammed could not immediately be reached for comment on the U.N. call for an investigation.

In the war in Ukraine, we have seen multiple instances of dogfighting between aircrafts. There's a video of a Ukrainian SU-25 frogfoot chasing a Russian SU-25, there are other such instances from this war also.

The key advantage the F-35 has over any fighter jet currently in service is information processing.

The war in Ukraine has shown everybody access to information is the primary tool in winning battles and eventually wars.

The ability for the F-35 to communicate seamlessly with AWACS, UAVs, Satellite Systems, ground based infrastructure and other aircrafts ensures that the F-35 maintains a see first, kill first advantage over any aircraft/fighter.

Military systems cannot function effectively alone, the ability to share information across multiple streams determines how successful a system is.

Actually the Nigerian Navy has no frigates for now. The NNS Aradu is grounded but it refers to the Hamilton class cutters and P18N Corvettes as Frigates because of their big size hence the reason why they have pennant numbers like F90, F91, F92 and F93.

There is a difference between LSTs, LHDs and Amphibious assault ships

LSTs are amphibious landing ships that can carry at most a Max. of 300 troops and 30+ vehicles and they can also carry 1 helicopter and a drone depending on the size of the landing helipad and the hangar. They also possess a front bow ramp and they are lightly armed with 12.7mm guns or 30mm RCWS for close quarter combat. They can weigh 1000 tons or more Examples are Damen LST 100, LST 120

LHDs are bigger amphibious vessels that can carry up to 3,4,5... to 20 or more helicopters and they can carry a Max of 800+ troops. They don't possess a front bow ramp, instead it's from the back and they can be armed with short range SAM and CIWS guns for self defense. They can weigh 30,000 tons or more but in Algeria's case, their San Giorgio LHD weighs 8,000 tons. Examples are China's Type 75 LHD, France's Mistral class LHD.

Then Amphibious Assault ships or Landing Platform Docks are ships bigger than LSTs but smaller than LHDs. They can carry a Max of 700+ troops and they are armed with 76mm naval guns, 40mm guns and 12.7mm guns. Their 76mm guns or 40mm can be used for naval fire support. They can weigh from 12,000 tons to 20,000 tons and also don't possess front bow ramps. It is also from the back for them. Examples are the US San Antonio LPDs, China's Type 71 LPD

Yes. However this does not mean Israel doesn't have more than capable systems of meeting Iran's present and future threats. There is David's sling and Barak for multipurpose threats and cruise weapons. There is the chief of them all, the Arrow family.

These systems are much more advanced than the rudimentary Iron dome. Iron dome only gets the hype because she sees more action.

Maybe not LHDs but the Nigerian Navy needs more than just LSTs. It needs to level up from depending on frigates as it's flagship. Maybe the "Low cost type 31 amphibious assault ship" will do or better still the "Tarlac amphibious assault ship" of the Philippine Navy
