zhike: South Africans are not happy with the statement released by CAF President Motsepe. The billionaire Motsepe said super eagles have potential of winning fifa world cup.
It’s possible as they have the potential. They have a large population all they have to do is fix the organizational issues plaguing the football administration and they have a chance.
The vast majority of those in STEM has not returned or will not return to Nigeria (just like you), so why do you think those in Arts and Humanities will return to Nigeria especially the group of students who attend those elite institutions? And why do you think
Cos there are not much jobs for foreigners in those fields as they are mostly taken by the natives. STEM on the other hand has a limited number of natives.
Why are we still sending STEM graduates abroad? What Naija needs to be doing right now is to be educating its future leaders. We need people educated in non-technical fields like philosophy, history, political science, literature, Economics and Law in the elite institutions in the world like Brown University, Princeton, Harvard, University of Oxford, University of Cambridge etc. We need to look for a way to start training its future statesman and women. We have way too many technical graduates going abroad and not too many from the Arts and Sciences.
This man is definitely mistaken that's for sure. This should be a cause for alarm that an established company can't succeed in Nigeria then that says a lot about our economic policies.
Really sad. A lot of people are going to lose their job and to make matters worse this shows that Nigeria is not an environment that businesses can thrive in.
My gosh! This is so sad. Think of all the jobs lost. If a company like shoprite cannot even survive in Nigeria what does that say about the business climate in the country. This is an indictment on the ruinous economic policies Nigerian leaders have pursued since independence. It’s really sad.
If he was in Nigeria, he will still be thinking of Waec and, jamb, Pume...and then comes the incessant ASUU strikes, then the wait for mobilisation, before Nysc, finally no job! Nigerian educational system forces their youths to graduate at a close to retirement age.
Honestly, they should ban JAMB and post UME. Even here SAT is not compulsory (some schools require it while some don’t).
That is info from the colonial administration at the time. If their is one thing i know about the British and Europeans, it’s their penchant for record keeping.
Babatunde40: I don't think we kept accurate data at that time. I do not believe it will be up to 500,000
You do know it was the British who were in charge back then and not Nigerians and if there is one thing I know about the Brits or the Europeans is their book keeping. I still go to the library in my school and other schools once in a while and I read colonial reports on Nigeria and other countries. They are so detailed.
I am not saying the records would have been 100% perfect (they probably underreported some of them) but as you can see they most likely tried the best to capture the info to the best of their ability after all Nigeria was their territory and it’s people were it’s subjects.
MiningNG: The mining sector is a strong propeller for Federal Government’s Economic Recovery and Growth Plan (ERGP), the Minister of State for Mines and Steel Development, Abubakar Bawa Bwari, has said.
Opening the Second Annual Northern Nigeria Solid Minerals Fair and Workshop in Minna, Niger State, Bwari said ERGP has facilitated removal of impediments to investment with the metals and solid minerals sector receiving priority attention as a catalyst for attracting private sector funds to the economy.
“The sector provided 24 of the 70 projects, including eight five-star projects that require zero public investment,” he disclosed, even as he hinted the projects are expected to facilitate private sector investment worth $3.32bn and create 238,000 jobs.
He listed ERGP’s success as the designation of three minerals – gold, lead-zinc ore and tin as quick win commodities, the issuance of a gold refinery licence to an indigenous company and the ground breaking ceremony for the construction of the gold refinery plant in Mowe last Thursday.
He also noted that challenges hindering commercial exploitation of the minerals are being removed, while a new export policy has been developed to remove hurdles associated with export permits and licencing.
Represented by Umar Hassan, an engineer, the minister highlighted achievements of his ministry, including increased revenue to government coffers, job and wealth creation and the acquisition of gold by the Central Bank of Nigeria to stabilise the nation’s currency.
angieberry: I know some women's mouth can push their otherwise gentle husband's to do the unthinkable. But, as she said, it's still no excuse to beat up your wife. Just leave quietly while she rants.
Then she follows you and start beating you up and emasculating you in front of your neighborhood?
rottennaija: As usual, running away from our problem, which is poor leadership which is fueled by corruption leading to mismanagement of resources that could have turn this nation around.
No matter how much resources Nigeria has, no matter how much potential we have and how much we make, as long as funds meant for development is mismanaged, as long as contracts are inflated, as long as we cannot face the elephant in the room, no matter how good your economic policies are, you can never develop.
This situation is like a father who is the bread winner that makes 1m per month but uses the money to drink, carry women, lavishes the money, irrespective of how much he earns, his house will never develop or thrive.
Bros I think you are wrong on this one. The parliamentary system is the best form of govt for a country as diverse as Nigeria. If done well, It ensures that the best of the best of each party gets to run the country. I will soon create a thread on the advantages and disadvantages of the parliamentary system of govt and why it would be better for Nigeria than he current system which only provides two major parties (and candidates) each election.
A group of 71 lawmakers of the House of Representatives, mostly from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), have canvassed for the return of Nigeria from the presidential to the parliamentary system of government.
Briefing newsmen at the National Assembly in Abuja on Thursday, spokesmen of the group, Kingsley Chinda (PDP, Rivers) and Nicholas Ossai (PDP, Delta), said the parliamentary system, as opposed to the presidential system, suits Nigeria because it is more economic friendly, cost effective and largely efficient in the conduct of government business.
Rising from “Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (Alteration) Bill, 2018,” the lawmakers lamented that whereas, countries under the parliamentary system were prospering, the presidential system has “reduced Nigeria to the poverty capital of the world.”
“We are 71 bi-partisan members of the House of Representatives, who feel that the parliamentary system of government promulgated by the Lyttleton Constitution of 1954 is the best for Nigeria since the presidential system has reduced us to the poverty capital of the world.
“Our position in this legislation clearly points to compelling advantages of parliamentary system of government, such as economic growth and development, as well as inherent efficiency in the conduct of government business.
“Studies have shown that countries under the presidential regimes consistently produce lower output, volatile inflation and greater income inequality relative to those under parliamentary system,” the group said.
However, this is coming just few months to the expiration of the legislative life of the 8th Assembly, thus raising concern over the period required to push the bill through the normal legislative process.
The bill, if passed, will also require the assent of President Muhammadu Buhari to become law, and be enshrined in the Constitution.
Recall that Nigeria practised the British-styled parliamentary system of government in the First Republic, from 1960 until 15 January, 1966 when the military took power.
However, the 1979 Constitution returned the country to the US-styled presidential system of government, largely because of the tensions and acrimonious politics of the First Republic.
Aside Ossai, other members of the group present at the briefing include Abdulsamad Dasuki (PDP, Sokoto), Boma Goodhead (PDP, Rivers), Timothy Golu (PDP, Plateau), Gabriel Onyenwife (PDP, Anambra), Sergius Ogun (PDP, Edo), Emeka Ujam (PDP, Enugu) among others.
Boom! I have been saying this for a while now. Finally we are thinking right. The presidential system only allows for two main parties which is too small for a country with multiple tribes like Nigeria. I need to create a thread one of this days to highlight the pros and cons of a parliamentary system. It really fits Nigeria than this system we currently practice.
youngprofdguru: The Presidency on Thursday said President Muhammadu Buhari did not sign the Electoral Amendment Bill because doing so might cause confusion and lead to anarchy.
The Senior Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly Matters (Senate), Ita Enang, said this on Thursday during an interview on Channels Television Breakfast programme, Sunrise Daily.
He also disclosed that the President did not consult the other 91 political parties before refusing to sign the electoral bill because he needed to act in the best interest of the nation.
“Now, let me get to the other issue that Mr President alluded to, in not assenting to the bill. It is getting too close to election time and it will be dangerous to bring in a new electoral law at this time when the process of election has commenced from August, September, October this year. If you come to conclusion under a new law. It will cause confusion and may lead to anarchy.
“I think that what the President is to do is to take the best of discretion and from his vantage point as President of the country, to look at international best practices,” he said.
Various political parties and public interest groups have criticised the President for refusing to sign the bill.
So what exactly is the electoral act ammendment bill? Goodness! See poor journalism? Isnt it the job of the media to inform the people? Wow! Really substandard work. Just like everything in Nigeria. You people can barely summarize neither do you know how to educate the people. You guys would be speaking big English in an attempt to feel self important. Rubbish! Absolute rubbish.
mispresented Yes, I mean the father, how could he had Bsc Criminolgy and Masters in Health management? As for the son, he is a coropal, you can see it the two stripes on his arms in one of the pictures, and somebody of that rank can not fly service aircraft, except as a member of crew, but definitely not a pilot. Just pointing out some grey areas in the post, that might have been mispresented or exaggerated. I sincerely congratulate him.
Actually it is possible to have degrees a bachelor's in something and a master's in something else. It is not naija we are talking about.
obembet: The scary thing about the Metele terrorist attack is that it wasn’t the first of its kind.
Before Boko Haram insurgents killed over 100 Nigerian soldiers right inside their base on November 18/19, 2018, they had struck before, over and over again.
Premium Times investigative reporter, Nicholas Ibekwe, reminds us that we’ve been here before.
“Boko Haram attack on the army base in Metele where over 100 soldiers were reportedly killed, is not the worst attack this year. On July 14, over 200 soldiers were slaughtered in Jili during an attack on the military base there. Due to poor reporting that incident didn't go viral”, Ibekwe shared in a tweet.
— Nicholas Ibekwe (@) 2013-07-22 14:22:09.0
The Jili attack which Ibekwe referenced above is not even the first of its kind as well. Soldiers have become easy targets for terrorists as you would expect, since Boko Haram commenced an insurgency against the Nigerian state in 2009. It is a development that should leave us all very worried. If terrorists can make mincemeat of our soldiers at will, what becomes of the rest of us? The only reason why everyone is talking about Metele is because the social and online media just couldn't stop talking about it, forcing everyone to eventually talk about it.
Nigerian soldiers on a drill in an open field (Punch) The Metele attack raises a lot of questions and concerns. How do terrorists sack an entire army base? Do our fighting forces operate without intelligence, surveillance, target acquisition or reconnaissance facilities? Were there no drones around the base? How come a military base was not secured? If our intelligence gathering is anywhere near top notch, surely this attack could have been nipped in the bud?
This wasn’t a face-to-face war on the battlefield. This was Boko Haram marching to the home of soldiers and sacking them from their cubicles with merciless precision! You could imagine the agony on the faces of the soldiers as the terrorists surprised them with sophisticated weaponry and shot them dead one after the other--from point blank range.
President Muhammadu Buhari with his Chief of Army Staff Tukur Buratai (Daily Post)
I have read chilling accounts of some of the survivors--accounts of soldiers sharing stories of how they are forced to face terrorists with weapons purchased in the ‘80s and how they are made to go to war without food in their bellies. One soldier narrates how Military Generals feed fat on defense budgets while sending soldiers on the lower rungs of the ladder to go confront Boko Haram fighters with as little motivation as possible.
“We know about the money the federal government gave to them but the Nigerian Army has turned us into a business.
“All the money federal government gave them to buy weapons… Nigerian Army is buying INNOSON…. All these are obsolete… Oyinbo (the white man) came here and said they are obsolete. All these weapons were bought during the Shagari regime in 1983… they have turned us to business…. federal government you will hear about it…. “All these weapons are not genuine…if you fire two times you have stoppages. This is 1983 when Shagari was head of state… federal government give them money, they go and buy INNOSON, Nigerian made… federal government please help us. Help us”, one survivor of the Metele attack reportedly said in a viral video.
Soldiers drive off to battle (AFP/File)
The thrust of this essay is that Metele could have been avoided. Those soldiers who died would be alive today if this were a serious country that knows a thing or two about the sanctity of human life. Like it does everyone else, this country let those soldiers down and led them to Boko Haram’s slaughter slab. President Buhari has promised to ensure that soldiers get what is due them henceforth. “Our loyal forces have proved their strength over the terrorists and we are ready to give them all the needed support in terms of equipment and manpower to succeed in ending the renewed threat”, the nation’s Commander-in-Chief said in a terse statement.
The president has also summoned military chiefs in the wake of the attacks. It is imperative to state here that cornering monies meant to equip soldiers on the battlefield was one of the biggest allegations levelled against Military Generals who served under the Goodluck Jonathan era. Some of those Generals are still facing trial for alleged corruption; and a certain Colonel Sambo Dasuki is still in jail for allegedly stealing over N2billion of monies earmarked to purchase ammunition for fighting troops.
President Muhammadu Buhari decorates his Chief of Army Staff Tukur Buratai (Nigerian Army) It’s 2018 under a president who promised to crackdown on the kind of wanton and brazen corruption that was pretty much the norm under Jonathan, and military bosses are still being accused of depriving their men of weapons and bread. The more things change…… Beyond the platitudes from all across the country however, the federal government must make sure that the families of the slain soldiers are not abandoned and that they are well taken care of by the state. If we are really serious about winning the war against violent extremists and terrorists, we have to prioritize the welfare of our soldiers who have been dying like chickens, and arm them sufficiently. Otherwise, in no time, we’ll all be toast.

Why can't Nigerians learn how to summarize for goodness sakes??
Obafemi the traitor a modest, his single act of betrayal lead to death of millions of children, women and men, well as Karma have it the northern slave as he is, sams northerner bleeped him up and he died of poison. Took his own life, one word KARMA. He was not great. He was selfish, Judas, wicked and naive. Nigeria would have separated and every country developing, no one would be facing this hardship.
Awo killed himself? Where did you hear that conspiracy theory from? The fact that you heard something somewhere does not make it true.
Watch this video of them during 1979 presidential campaign. They both were cruising the mecedes benz 200E. A car that middle class nigerians couldnt afford till around 2001.
Our leaders are/were all bad. From buhari to murtala to gej all were/are crooks.
Meanwhile check out asian countries and how they left us behind like bad habit
Unless something revolutionary and radical happens, this country's future is bleak.
Imagine creating more higher institutions when the ones in place are poorly mismanaged and inadequately funded.
Education is expensive and needs adequate funding to make it affordable for the common man but the avaricious cabal is just interested in embezzlement.
When will all this end?
I tire o. Isn't it better to have a few world class institutions than glorified secondary schools? Honestly, they need to create an accreditation body for this schools so as to weed out and prevent all this mushroom institutions from springing up. It's truly becoming something else.
SajHall: The Senate yesterday passed bills for the establishment of five polytechnics, two universities, two colleges of education and one institute of technology.
The institutions are Federal Polytechnic, Kabo, Kano State; Federal Polytechnic, Daura, Katsina State; Federal Polytechnic, Ikom, Cross River State; Federal Polytechnic, Langtang, Plateau State and Federal Polytechnic, Kwale, Delta State.
Others are Federal University of Education, Aguleri, Anambra State; Federal University of Technology, Manchok, Kaduna State; Federal College of Education, Usugbenu Irrua, Edo State; Federal College of Education (Technical), Arochukwu, Abia State and National Institute of Construction Technology and Management, Uromi, Edo State.
The 10 proposed federal institutions are part of the over 80 that the National Assembly is currently working to establish.
Daily Trust had last Friday reported that the bills for the 80 new federal tertiary institutions are at various stages of legislative processes.
Our correspondent reports that apart from the 80 bills, one other bill came up for first reading on Tuesday.
How are they going to be funded for goodness sakes? To parapharase what a wise man once said, isn't it better to have one or two world class institutions than multitudes of glorified grammar schools? Na wa o. The way people think in this country sef.
SilentWisper: The lady in blue is beautiful, the man have good taste
And what does that have to do with anything again? How old are you sef? From reading this completely immature post it looks like the person who wrote must be really young and doesn't know much about marriage or relationships overall.
Kenturkey048: u are the one lame because u av failed to study your environment..all ye thinking gudluck jonatan failed are suffering from limited concept..
What are you talking about? This man spent almost a decade in office and while he was there he did not liberalize the oil and gas sector to make it more profitable and create jobs. He failed to overhaul the armed forces to make it more effective fighting machine considering the fact that we were fighting a domestic insurgency on three fronts. He failed to reform our educational sector and bring it into the 21st century. He failed to reduce the size of the govt to reduce waste, inefficiency neither did he push Congress to pass strong laws to fight Corruption and you want me to give him the benefit of doubt? Are you serious??
Obama is the only president of the free world going about trying to take credit for another President's economy, campaigning here n there, even with Hillary, and lost. Campaigned in Florida. Lost. Campaigned in Georgia. Lost. Indiana. Lost. Even with support from celebs. Lost
Karma got no chills lol
Wrong! It was Obama who for us out of the economic mess we were in in the first place. The economic recovery began under him not Trump. Try again.
kernniejay: But why is this Jonathan not smart? Why is he pointing fingers at others when he was the Commander in Chief? Why can't he just admit he was dumb and now he has learnt his lessons?
The true test that a man has matured and learned from the past is that he has learnt from his mistakes not fingerpointing.
netpro: This is just lame. Jonathan absolving himself of his incompetence.
When will he start taking responsibility for his failures?
I tire o. The man still never realize him mistakes. How can you even retrace your steps when you can't even realize that you've made mistakes in the first place?
smithyemy: Sometimes, I wonder why some people here in this platform refused to grow up. But, I can only help myself by pin pointing to their lack of adequate education and exposure that makes them wail, slander and criticize innocent people unnecessarily. Here in Europe where I base :you will see many yorubas accommodating ibos for years even my wife (who is a yoruba)ve help so many ibos. She accomodated them for years and she still help them to get their papers and they ve eventually settle down here in UK. Also, I will want the ibos to ask their brothers and sisters that live in UK, if yorubas have not been helping them. Also, my surprise is that ibos here are very friendly to yorubas. Maybe bcoz of the high population of yoruba in the UK.in a nutshell I realize that tribalism only exist among those that base in Nigeria. Finally, I will like to conclude by saying : parents should give their children to marry from any choice of their own and stop antagonizing and persecuting innocent children.
The tribalism in Nigeria is really fueled by poverty, frustration and ignorance. The country really does need a peacekeeper at the helm of affairs to unite the country.
