.. it's largely a lack of patriotism that's responsible for this in my opinion.
Poor leadership with selfish and greedy interests from people in positions of power, and poor "followership" where the users feel they have no choice but to continue to live their lives, whatever the cost.
The slang now is "it shall favour me and my family"!
