blueband: The Federal Government has started a search for new investors for NITEL and its mobile subsidiary, Mtel to improve on their dwindling fortunes.
At a meeting with the Transnational Corporation last December, the government made it clear that it was prepared to get another investor to salvage the telecoms companies.
The government said this was to redress the worsening condition of the companies, a year after Transcorp took over their operations.
This decision was contained in a communique at the end of a stakeholders’ meeting, which was made available to the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja on Monday.
The resolution indicated that both parties agreed to divest a percentage of their equity in the parent company to a new investor.
“There is the need for a new core investor, who is an industry player, with a focus, technical expertise, managerial experience and financial capacity to turn NITEL/Mtel around’’ it stated.
The Federal Government currently owns 49 per cent share in the NITEL, while Transcorp controls 51 per cent after paying N63bn ($500m) in November 2006.
With this resolution, the government is to relinquish 24 per cent of its holding to the new investor and retain 25 per cent for divestment to Nigerians.
“Transcorp is to relinquish a maximum of 27 per cent out of its 51 per cent holding to the new operator/investor in order to make up the 51 per cent needed to give the core investor majority ownership” the resolution said.
NAN gathered that the resolution had been sent to President Umaru Yar’ Adua for approval.
Top ministry officials told NAN that the meeting, held on December 17, 2007, was attended by the Minister of Information and Communication, the Nigeria Communications Commission, Transcorp and the BPE.
Top ministry officials said some investors had already indicated interest in the company.
The officials said the memo to the President entitled, “Re: Unmerited six months tolerance of Transcorp’s sloppy management of NITEL/Mtel,” catalogued about 32 post-acquisition expectations that Transcorp did not meet.
The officials said Transcorp had failed to meet the post-acquisition plan of NITEL/ Mtel, which included the infusion of N8.9bn working capital loan to turn around the company. Now we know why all d buzz around transcorp shares. Some people get insider info. |

For those doing CICO get to understand that it is not always that your ORDERS get executed. Factor such delays from your brokers into your plans so that you don't get your fingers burnt. Most often, they don't get to BUY until the price is beyong tolerance limit. Same way they don't get to SELL until it is way too cheap!!!
@Wanajo, how u dey?
Your comment above is apt. It is happening to me right now with my purchase mandate. I have had this order place since Wed last week. Unfortunately, it has not been done. My luck is that the price has fallen a bit and is still wothin my range.
These brokers are going to be a stumbling block for some of us who prefer to go short term. |

aktopgun: The MACD-Histogram represents the difference between the MACD and its trigger line, the 9-day EMA of MACD. The plot of this difference is presented as a histogram, making centerline crossovers and divergences easily identifiable. A centerline crossover for the MACD-Histogram is the same as a moving average crossover for MACD. a moving average crossover occurs when MACD moves above or below the trigger line.
If the value of MACD is larger than the value of its 9-day EMA, then the value on the MACD-Histogram will be positive. Conversely, if the value of MACD is less than its 9-day EMA, then the value on the MACD-Histogram will be negative.
Further increases or decreases in the gap between MACD and its trigger line will be reflected in the MACD-Histogram. Sharp increases in the MACD-Histogram indicate that MACD is rising faster than its 9-day EMA and bullish momentum is strengthening. Sharp declines in the MACD-Histogram indicate that MACD is falling faster than its 9-day EMA and bearish momentum is increasing.
The main benefit of the MACD-Histogram is its ability to anticipate MACD signals. Divergences usually appear in the MACD-Histogram before MACD moving average crossovers do. Armed with this knowledge, traders and investors can better prepare for potential trend changes.
The MACD-Histogram can be applied to daily, weekly or monthly charts. (Note: This may require some tinkering with the number of periods used to form the original MACD; shorter or faster moving averages might be necessary for weekly and monthly charts.) Using weekly charts, the broad underlying trend of a stock can be determined. Once the broad trend has been determined, daily charts can be used to time entry and exit strategies.
this is the best explanation i could find and its helped me a great deal. Thanks Aktopgun. |

4wheel: I heard from a good source that Wapic is due to go on TS soon, so beware. I heard they were targeting N15 but with the slow trend in its upward move, time may be running against it before its PO is due.
Whaz zenith securities up to these days, they seem to need more hands in handling their mandates and crediting of accounts. They are becoming too slow these days. You can say this again. I use Lead Capital and UBA. It is the same story. Infact at UBA, you need to get ur relationship manager to flag your mandate or it may not be attended to. It looks like they all are not facing up to the reality that 2008 is going to be mostly a short term market. |

@blueband,
I have had the same experience with brokers. No matter the analysis you do and the profit you are likely to make, they are the last link in the chain.
Like f0f2 said earlier, one needs to really syche them up to such an extent that they believe they are tarding for themselves not you i.e. your pain is their pain. |

@yodiyokun
I concur. I still have not gotten over 1st Bank. I took the UBA share plus so I could use part of it to buy 1st Bank. Thank God I changed my mind from 100,000 to 50,000 units. Meanwhile, I never see returned funds neither have I seen certificate.
UBA says there are some missing names and are reconciling with the registrars. Meanwhile interest dey mount.( Anyway, I consider this my own contribution wey never yield anything). Na God go help person.
So for me and my household, no more IPO,PO,PP etc. |

EMMAACHILE: Hi STOCKWATCH: STANDARD ALLIANCE, NNFM Stdinsure is no more on offer and should be the safest stock to buy in the insurance industry. For me, i will be ordering large units which i think will be safer than to buy Transcorp.
NNFM seems to be out of its losing streak though should be a short term candidate. I HAVE BEEN TRYING TO GET NNFM. NO LUCK!!! |
