There is no position or office of the "Acting President” in Nigerian constitution. The only time the phrase “acting president” was included in the constitution happened in the last sentence of section 145 with regard to discharge of duties of President by the Vice President. All the on-going political shenanigans in Nigeria as pertaining to President, Vice President and National Assembly are unconstitutional. However, we are talking about Nigeria that has no business studying democracy talk less of practicing it.

Section 38 of Nigeria constitution deals with freedom of religion and Sharia is part of Islamic religion.

The display of blind sentiment doctored by sectionalism is the major reason Nigeria will ever remain backward in every human endeavor.

Some Ijaws were in favour of Biafra and some were against it. It was therefore wrong to try and force all of them into Biafra without first seeking their wishes in the ballot box.

But the most important point of all, which you overlook is this:
WITH THE BACKING OF THE BALLOT BOX, OJUKWU AND BIAFRA WOULD HAVE BEEN UNTOUCHABLE. GOWON WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN ABLE TO FIGHT IT WITHOUT SEVERE CRITICISM FROM THE WESTERN POWERS AND BRITAIN WOULD CERTAINLY NOT HAVE ASSISTED GOWON WITH ANY MILITARY EQUIPMENT.

Nobody wants to be seen as the enemy of democracy!
You are entitled to your opinion regardless how twisted such opinion seems to hold but you do not have the same privilege to distort history. The slide of eastern region you have tried to uncover demands to know your state of mind. Nigeria was under military regime and all the four regions were under the stewardship of military governor. I hope people have not gone drunk on the phrase, “ballot box”.

As a result of the pogrom in northern Nigeria, unsuccessful coup by elements of soldiers from northern region of Nigerian army, trail of betrayals and political impasse between eastern region and Nigeria led by Gowon, Nigeria imposed unannounced and unforeseen war of attrition on eastern region.

When the Nigerian solders of eastern region were ordered to relocate to their region of origin, many rank and file of Ijo in Nigerian armed forces ran back to eastern region and this pitiful question of referendum or lack thereof never popped up. When the eastern region Ijo leaders and chiefs visited Ojukwu at Enugu in 1967 pledging their solidarity with then military governor, there was no iota of record that remotely depicted Ijo as a group demanding the exercise of referendum on any subject matter. One wonders what instigated this sudden love for the referencing of referendum in eastern region at this stage of the cesspit called Nigeria.

The war was fought and lost but an attempt to tweak the history in order to justify an exhibited fundamental flaw of a character is foolhardy.

Only Truth
Read my answer again. I am agreeing with you.

I think Biafra WOULD HAVE SUCEEDED if Ojukwu had held a referendum. The Igbos would have voted 99.999% to join, and the Ikwerre vote and Calabar vote would also have been very high too - probably in the high 70s/80s. Don't forget there was a lot of pogrom going on in the north where Igbos and other south-easterners were getting slaughtered and had to flee back to the south to save their lives.
So the YES vote would definitely have been overwhelming and Biafra would definitely be in existence today.
The ijaws would most likely have voted no, and so would not have been part of Biafra. That's ok - they are entitled to decide their own destiny.
And I do believe that Biafra would have easily been the most economically succesful country in all of Africa - not just west africa
The talk of referendum in 1967 eastern region borders on disingenuous and outright naiveté. The pogrom that took place in northern region was targeted against non-northerners in general and easterner in particular. The stories from the half-dead returnees dotted entire landscape of eastern region and they engendered unforeseen emotions.

It is wise to accuse Ojukwu of certain issues concerning how the war was handled but referendum is certainly not one of them. The government of eastern region was stacked up with the faces across ethnic groups that makeup the region. It must be recalled that it was an Ijo son from Yenegoa that gave the eastern region the name “Biafra”. Many Ijo boys from prominent families in the Ijo land fought the war on the Biafran side till the bitter end.

If Biafra had won the war, this cry of referendum or lack thereof would not have surfaced rather Ijo would have rightfully claimed the position of the Pastor that baptized the nascent country.

ME SEF,

I do not completely agree,  I'm in the middle here. I accept that Nigeria's formation was faulty and in need of a reform but i don't think a ''peaceful separation'' is possible. If it can be done peacefully,  then It might be a preferred solution. However, it will involve mindless killings and hate propaganda which will ruin any chance of development for years to come. We will end up like Rwanda or the Congo,  achieve a backward movement instead of progress!

I'm aware many people do not subscribe to my point of view here and are willing to sacrifice peace if it means everyone eventually going their separate ways afterwards,  i respect that. Everyone is entitled to their opinion,  But just consider what will happen to people in the event of a war,  I studied the situation in China and there are just as many tribes and languages but Chairman Mao was able to create unity through the eradication of a class system and an enforcement of rule of law (By 'extraordinary' means). In the new China, you dont have to be the son of a landlord, northerner or Southerner to earn a living. You just have to be hardworking!

This i think is a step in the right direction,
You are rightfully entitled to your opinion even if such amalgam is regrettably wrong. However, I shall urge you to be prudent before making such opinion public. By the way, are you sure to have read the history of China with regards to Chairman Mao?

I could not believe the fact that some people that could pass as my pals on this forum have allowed their intellectual awareness to be blindsided with tribal emptiness. You could do better than you have shown with the ill-driven posts about Adaka Boro and Eastern region. If tribalism never existed in the cesspit called Nigeria, there should not have been more than two sentences written about Jasper Adaka Boro. It was unfortunate that the detractors of Eastern Nigeria exploited the unstable mind of a highly naïve fellow of Ijo extraction called Adaka Boro in order to destabilize the region.

The funny part of the story was the detractors of eastern region failed woefully in recruiting mainstream political activists to create state of emergency in the region before latching onto an ill-informed fellow. I am still yet to locate the abundant resources that flooded the Brass/Degema/Yenegoa provinces before the discovery of crude oil in 1956. There is not much baskets of smoked fish and kegs of kinkana (Akamere) could do in terms of erecting industries.

Eastern region did not have standing army or police force. When Adaka Boro and his comrades declared Republic of Niger Delta, it was a direct challenge to the sovereignty of Nigeria and he was appropriately handled by the armed forces of Nigeria. If he was driven to irreparable insanity by the government practices sitting in Enugu, he should have stormed the government house in Enugu rather than declaring an independent entity.

@Ibime and na_so

The people of Ikeduru would have joined the fight in soliderity because there was no single industry in Uratta/Ikeduru axis. At least, there were Boat Industry in Opobo and Fishery industry within Port Harcourt environ. It is a mute case to argue about distance from Aba to Yenegoa which in my estimate is less than 80 miles. If the Adaka Boro was not practically brainwashed, one wonders why he incidentally forgot to mention that headquarter of Shell-BP was situated more than 250 miles from Opobo, Yenegoa or Port Harcourt in Lagos, western region of Nigeria.

At the time of the so-called Boro’s political shenanigans, the most industries situated in Port Harcourt or Opobo were through resource efforts of coal, rubber and palm produce including the sheer hard work of the easterners. I suggest that people should read the history of crude oil production in Nigeria before leaping to ridiculous conclusions. The crude oil never benefited eastern region before it was overtaken by events. In fact, most of the individuals who benefited from the Shell-BP scholarship were from Ogoni and Ijo. I could unfold list of names. The political actions and utterances mounted against eastern region by the Ijo in particular and dwellers of Rivers and Bayelsa States in general teeter on ungratefulness and naiveté.

Any reasonable fellow should understand that agitation of state or region does not require declaration of an independent country from an entity that is not even a country.

At times, I feel ashamed to be associated in any form or shape with cesspit called Nigeria. The on-going discourse about the name of the person who killed Adaka Boro has reawakened the zeal in me to continue the agitation for disintegration of the colonial contraption named Nigeria. Even the people with some resourceful gray matters above their shoulders tend to be blinded with the twisted insanity of sectionalism.

It is studiously unfunny to read the posts insinuating that Jasper Boro’s 1966 act of secession was against eastern region of Nigeria. Anybody with functional cells of the brain must have realized that eastern region was not a country and the secession madness of Adaka Boro could not have been targeted against the region but Nigeria. Isaac Jasper Adaka Boro declared an independent state against the backdrop of Nigeria. It is uncanny that few months later, Boro joined forces with the same Nigeria he tried to secede. If anyone is deserving honor of a betrayal artist and brainwashed goon, my nomination in those categories is certainly Isaac Jasper Adaka Boro.

Try and see issues outside the prism of tribalism. Why are you being obsequious to Nzeribe? Could this be because you're of Igbo stock?
You're trying to obfuscate the issue people have with Nzeribe.
Never mind people remember the role played by this puppet during the Babangida years. Forget the fact this man was a senator and he did not raise this issue when he was a lawmaker. You accuse us of calumny yet ignore the fact this man does better in the midst of chaos and war.
Very few Igbo people have a symbiotic relationship with this dolt, many Igbo people know this man for what he really is.
The Machiavellian machinations of this puppet will never come to pass. We shall trample on his grave if he thinks he can again cause chaos and sell weapons to the aggrieved parties.

PEACE OUT!!!
Human nature can be funny at times. It is very unfortunate that you are the prognosticator of tribal sentiment to discourse and yet indict the dissenters of your tribal inclined political view of tribal bias.

I am happy that Chief Nzeribe has been alleged to instigate the annulment of June 12 election in Nigeria. Any society that elected Chief MKO Abiola to a position of a dog catcher is very moronic. Given the public disclosed information about Nigeria, I would incline more to stand behind Nzeribe than Abiola.

Today’s Nigeria had been left with unworkable and dilapidated lined telephone network as Abiola made sure that Nigerians are not suited for the use of telephone. Abiola, the ITT (International Total Thief), connived with ITT, Inc to embezzle more then 380 million dollar contract awarded in 1975 for telephone network in Nigeria. Thanks to cellular technology Nigeria would have remained in total incommunicado due to lack of lined telephone network.

I shall reiterate that anybody who seemed ruffled because of annulment of June 12 Nigerian elections should jump off cliff.

I do not give fig if Chief Nzeribe prospers in the midst of chaos or war. And certainly will not give a rat-arss if Nzeribe played second fiddle to Babanagida in annulment of June 12 elections. There has never been a time Chief Nzeribe’s name is associated with tribunals investigating financial impropriates by certain office holders in Nigeria. Yet few intellectual midgets in Nigeria would find succor among rumors and innuendos to tarnish the person of senator Nzeribe because the man bows to nobody.
