oz4real83: some punishments are supposed to act as deterrents, was somebody not sentenced to death in Nigeria for stealing a governor's handset? Havent heard of that frankly, but is that not barbaric. When Islam says cut off the hand of a thief, do you agree with that? Honestly I thought you will come with a better excuse such as saying it was a different era. |

RodgersAkpafu: you are part right white males saw the reelection of Obama as a slap on their face and a pointer to the loss of their power (delusional lots lol) so they voted overwhelming for Trump...
However that is not enough to make trump win
a disunited Democratic party and revenge voters for what happened to bernie plus those who stayed at home plus a flawed and criminal electoral college system (despite winning by over 3 m votes hilarious hilary still "lost" to trump)
so it's a mix of factors but the Obama factor was there Totally agreed. And I dont know when they will revisit the idea of a system that claims to be democratic installing a person with less votes as the winner. |

oz4real83: there were specific requirements from men who wanted to marry virgins in the bible. Why will non-virgins pretend to be virgins and men will provide those requirements only to discover later that they have been defrauded?. This is why paternity fraud is so common today Even if we grant that it is bad for a woman to be a non virgin at the date of her wedding (which is nonsense to me) but lets say we accept that. Does it make sense to stone her to death for that reason? |

StOla: The majority that voted against him, did they vote for a single candidate who was then denied victory?
If we are to ridicle the winner for not winning majority of votes cast despite being the candidate with the highest votes and the only candidate who surpassed the required minimum electoral spread that qualified him to be so declared as validly elected, is it the losers who came behind him with even more majority votes against them that we should now accord any regard?
Did you see the President in Kenya who won both on social media and actual votes?
Did you see the crisis his government was engulfed with because he tried to implement a tax policy so that government would have more funds to provide the citizens with infrastructure and services?
13 people died in the protest and riots that ensued.
Is that not a clear reminder that despite the euphoria of electoral victory, the business of running a country requires taking hard decisions that do not have to be popular or palatable?
Any of the candidates and supporters of candidates in the 2023 Nigerian presidential election, who advocated oil subsidy removal and the floating of the currency exchange, do not have any morality to lament about the obvious consequences of those policies as we now experience them.
I am only sad for the little minority of Nigerians who voted for unsung candidates that did not advocate for subsidy removal. Understood. However - talking economics - the manner of subsidy removal left much to be desired. And following it immediately with the naira float was very ill advised. Calamituous actually. Went out around town yesterday. Was shocked at the amount of quality restaurants that had closed, Not so much as a single customer @ Hard Rock Cafe and several other places which were booming just last year. These things are telling. The economy has been strangled. Very very very badly. Through bad policy making and implementation. The damage that has been done in one year alone may take decades to reverse. Its not enough to say "hard decisions." Quality thought must go into these things. The president has been reckless and has inflicted damage on this country. Grave damage. I dont know that Obi would have been any better though, except most likely in terms of eschewing extravagance and opulent excess in the midst of a crisis. Tinubu does not do well in this regard. |

StOla: Stop boasting with your social media legitimacy. Legal legitimacy yes, but not really popular legitimacy as it is a valid point that the majority of the electorate voted against him. Its almost like a US president who loses the popular vote. He has already written his name in the history books of Nigerian leadership. Written in history, but not written in gold. Thus far, I am sure not even you will deny that the memory Nigerians are developing of Tinubu is a painful and unpleasant one. The people will remember this time with pain, and not with happy nostalgia. Not even you can change that. And that is truly sad for someone who has a valid claim to be a fighter for democracy and freedom in this country (with NADECO). |

btoks: Well, the royal family don't really have that power any longer, only what the parliament allows. The English revolution brought about a constitutional monarchy and that has created a balance of power- Monarch, PM, parliament.
UK obviously needs the monarchy for many reasons and could easily have got rid of them like the French. Saying that, no democracy is perfect and many don't like the exclusivity of the royal family. I am talking real-politik and power-de-facto and you are busy explaining to me de-jure fronts. I repeat: British democracy is a pretense at democracy. There is no real democracy in Britain. Also, anyone who thinks the King has no real power is just naive. Even as Prince of Wales, Charles was in the habit of writing memos to govt ministers which they treated with deference. The Guardian of the UK did an expose on this. |

StOla: That is not an opinion. It is an opinion. A person can have an opinion that an election was trigged. Or are elections never rigged and is it a crime or treason to claim an election was rigged? The millions of Trump supporters who claim he won the last elections - are they all being charged with treason? Even if their clams are false? It is a false claim that is even treasonous. A false claim is not necessaily treasonous. An attempt to take over the government illegally is, or such other acts as may constitute betrayal of the state. A person can validly believe an election was rigged. You can validly believe it was not. You are both entitled to say so. Free speech does not allow for false claims. And who determines what a false claim is? If a claim is that an election was rigged, are you saying no one is permitted to say so? Are Trumpists being prosecuted in the United States for this exact claim? And it is not his right to claim that a loser won. Anyone can say whatever they believe to be true. Its free speech. You guys should learn to be civilised and understand that democracy does not mean everyone wins. Please dont assume I am an "obidient." |

1 - Stoning Women who are not virgins on their wedding night
Perhaps the most barbaric belief in the Old Testament of the Bible is documented in Deuteronomy 22:20-21 which says, “If, however, the charge is true and no proof of the young woman’s virginity can be found, she shall be brought to the door of her father’s house and there the men of her town shall stone her to death. She has done an outrageous thing in Israel by being promiscuous while still in her father’s house. You must purge the evil from among you.”These verses show ultimate barbarism and misogyny as they describe how women who are not virgins at the time of marriage must be stoned to death, Interestingly, there seems to be no mention of what should happen with men who are not virgins at the time of marriage. |

2 - Death for Homosexuality
There are several verses in the Bible that suggest negative views against homosexuality in general. One such verse is Leviticus 20:13 which says “If a man has sexual relations with a man as one does with a woman, both have done what is detestable. They are to be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads.”These verses indicates that the Old Testament did not necessarily approve of same-sex relationships. Although, for many Christians, New Testament teachings of kindness and love have replaced these horrific punishments. |

3 - Execution for Cursing your Parents
Calling for the execution of children who curse their parents at any instance is another example of a disproportionate punishment handed out by the Lord. Leviticus 20:9 says, “Anyone who curses their father or mother is to be put to death. Because they have cursed their father or mother, their blood will be on their own head.”This clearly indicates that anyone who curses their parents must be executed. This sort of punishment seems harsh and barbaric, despite the fact that cursing your parents is still deemed inappropriate by today’s standards. |

4 - Stoning those who worship other Gods
The Lord does not take lightly people who worship other gods. In Deuteronomy 17:2-5 (New International Version), the Lord urges his followers to identify those who worship other Gods and stone them to death. Here’s what the passage says: “If a man or woman living among you in one of the towns the Lord gives you is found doing evil in the eyes of the Lord your God in violation of his covenant, and contrary to my command has worshiped other gods, bowing down to them or to the sun or the moon or the stars in the sky, and this has been brought to your attention, then you must investigate it thoroughly. If it is true and it has been proved that this detestable thing has been done in Israel, take the man or woman who has done this evil deed to your city gate and stone that person to death.”It certainly brings some new arguments to the debate on capital punishment. |
