http://punchng.com/breaking-atiku-resigns-from-apc/ Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has defected from the All Progressives Congress. Atiku, in a statement he personally signed on Friday, recalled how he joined the ruling party in 2013. “On the 19th of December, 2013, I received members of the All Progressives Congress at my house in Abuja. They had come to appeal to me to join their party after my party, the Peoples Democratic Party, had become factionalized as a result of the special convention of August 31, 2013. “I admit that I and others who accepted the invitation to join the APC were eager to make positive changes for our country that we fell for a mirage. Can you blame us for wanting to put a speedy end to the sufferings of the masses of our people?” He stated, “After due consultation with my God, my family, my supporters and the Nigerian people whom I meet in all walks of life Atiku Abubakar, Waziri Adamawa” has resigned from the APC.

Men with a bent penis have a significantly increased risk from several cancers, according to a new study. It found that it brought a higher risk of testicular cancer by 40 percent, melanoma by 29 percent and stomach cancer by 40 percent. Researchers from Texas suggest a gene that may trigger crooked joysticks could also be linked to the development of tumors. The condition, known as Peyronie's disease, which is estimated to affect up to seven percent of males. The findings were presented at the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, after a review of patient data of more than 1.5 million by Baylor College in Houston. Experts from Texas suggest a gene that may trigger crooked joysticks could also be linked to the development of tumors (stock photo) Experts from Texas suggest a gene that may trigger crooked joysticks could also be linked to the development of tumors (stock photo) WHAT CAUSES PEYRONIE'S DISEASE? The cause of Peyronie's disease isn't completely understood, but a number of factors appear to be involved. It's thought it generally results from repeated injury to the penis. For example, the penis might be damaged during sex, athletic activity or as the result of an accident. However, most often, no specific trauma to the penis is recalled. During the healing process, scar tissue forms in a disorganized manner, which might then lead to a nodule that you can feel or development of curvature. In Peyronie's disease, when the penis becomes erect, the region with the scar tissue doesn't stretch, and the penis bends or becomes disfigured and possibly painful. In some men, Peyronie's comes on gradually and doesn't seem to be related to an injury. Researchers are investigating whether the disease might be linked to an inherited trait or certain health conditions. The team behind the research said men with Peyronie's should be closely monitored for cancer in a bid to catch any development early. But British said further research was needed to justify wide-scale routine screening. Dr Alexander Pastuszak, who led the study, said: 'While they’re significant in the sexual and reproductive life-cycles of these patients, linking them to other disorders suggest that these men should be monitored for development of these disorders disproportionately in contrast to the rest of the population. 'Nobody has made these associations before.' The researchers carried out further genetic analysis of a father and son both suffering from Peyronie’s. They discovered they shared a set of genes understood to predispose people to urological cancers. 'We found mutations in this father and son couplet in these types of genes specifically in melanoma, testis, and prostate cancer,' said Dr Pastuszak. Dr Pastuszak said the condition share some similarities with Dupuytren’s disease, a condition in which one or more fingers become permanently bent in a flexed position. They also found links with Ledderhose disease, a thickening of tissue on the feet. 'While we still need to validate some of these findings and translate them from the lab to the clinical population, these data do provide a strong link both clinically and at the genetic level between PD and Dupuytren's – these fibrosing conditions – and malignancies in men,' he added. According to researchers from the University of Istanbul, Peyronie's is believed to affect between 3.7 percent and 7.1 percent of men, 'but the actual prevalence of the disease may be higher because of patients' reluctance to report this embarrassing condition to their physicians'. A spokesperson from Cancer Research UK, said: 'It’s not yet fully understood what causes Peyronie’s disease and it’s possible it shares some similar risk factors to cancer. 'Screening for cancer isn’t always beneficial and comes with harms, so it’s essential screening programmes are backed by robust evidence.' Africa braced for epidemic of deadly airborne PLAGUE after it infects 1,300 people in Madagascar and map reveals the nine countries officials fear it will spread to next Health chiefs are desperately trying to contain a deadly outbreak of airborne plague in Africa that has prompted warnings in nine countries. More than 1,300 cases have now been reported in Madagascar, health chiefs have revealed, as nearby nations have been placed on high alert. Two thirds of those are suspected to be pneumonic - described as the 'deadliest and most rapid form of plague', World Health Organization figures show. The deadly disease is caused by the same bacteria that wiped out at least 50 million people in Europe in the 1300s. However, the lethal form currently spreading is different to the bubonic strain which was behind history's Black Death. Pneumonic can spread through coughing and can kill within 24 hours. The outbreak is moving quickly, with several British holiday hotspots now deemed at risk of the epidemic spreading, including Seychelles, South Africa and La Reunion. Mozambique, Tanzania, Kenya, Ethiopia, Comoros and Mauritius are the six other countries to have received the heightened alert. It has been reported as many as 50 aid workers are believed to have been among the people infected. The African branch of the WHO states 93 people have lost their lives to the disease so far, lower than the 124 noted in official UN figures. A WHO official said: 'The risk of the disease spreading is high at national level… because it is present in several towns and this is just the start of the outbreak.' HOW DID THE OUTBREAK BEGIN? Health officials are unsure how this year’s outbreak began. However, bubonic plague which is endemic in rural parts of Madagascar can turn into the pneumonic form if left untreated. Pneumonic plague, which is more virulent than other forms, can then be passed on through the air. The bubonic form is spread from fleas that carry the Yersinia pestis bacteria which then bite humans. It is believed they contract the bacteria from rats fleeing forest fires and striking rural communities. The first death this year occurred on August 28 when a passenger died in a public taxi en route to a town on the east coast. Two others who came into contact with the passenger also died. This outbreak is the first time the disease has affected the Indian Ocean island's two biggest cities, Antananarivo and Toamasina, officials said. Around 600 cases are reported each year on the island. But this year's outbreak is expected to dwarf previous ones as it has struck so early. Drafting in help International agencies have so far sent more than one million doses of antibiotics to Madagascar. Nearly 20,000 respiratory masks have also been donated. However, the WHO advises against travel or trade restrictions. It has previously asked for $5.5 million (£4.2m) to support the plague response. Despite its guidance, Air Seychelles, one of Madagascar's biggest airlines, stopped flying temporarily earlier in the month to try and curb the spread. A Foreign Office spokesman previously said: 'There is currently an outbreak of pneumonic and bubonic plague in Madagascar. 'Outbreaks of plague tend to be seasonal and occur mainly during the rainy season, with around 500 cases reported annually. A 64-year-old woman has opened up about how she was swindled out of $100,000 after falling for a man she'd never met. Patricia Meister, from Queensland, struck up an online relationship with who she though was a dashing middle-aged businessman after he sent her a friend request on Facebook in 2015. Speaking to Daily Mail Australia, the woman revealed the moment she fell head over heels in love, before discovering her Italian lover named 'Carlos' was a Nigerian fraudster. 'I'd never been on dating websites, and I only used Facebook for business. So when I got the friend request, I thought it couldn't do any harm, can it?,' she said. 'I guess at the time, I was going through a period in my life where I felt isolated. I'd been single for a while and I'd never been on dating sites. 'We started chatting. He was charming, smart and educated. He was very good with English and he was very romantic. I was very much in love with him at one stage.' She said the man who claimed he was based in Brisbane had told her he was working in interior design and his heritage was Italian and Scottish. 'When I first spoke to him, I heard his voice but he had a different accent to what I'd expected. I remember thinking "what is that accent?" I couldn't place his accent. 'I wasn't familiar with his accent at the time, but thinking about it now, he was definitely African... He was Nigerian.' Despite casting some doubts on him, Ms Meister continued speaking to him as the weeks passed. Within eight weeks into their relationship, 'Carlos' asked her if she could lend him $600 because his credit card wouldn't work when he was in Malaysia for a project. 'It didn't feel right but I thought "well, it's not a huge amount of money to lose". It wasn't a huge request so I did a wire transfer to him,' she recalled. 'A part of me thought it was wrong so I questioned him, saying "you're a businessman, your credit card should work..." His story didn't add up.' The 64-year-old woman revealed the moment she fell head over heels, only to find out her Italian lover named 'Carlos' was a Nigerian fraudster +6 The 64-year-old woman revealed the moment she fell head over heels, only to find out her Italian lover named 'Carlos' was a Nigerian fraudster But his request for money didn't end there. He would make up a different excuse each time he asked her for money. 'Carlos' was planning a trip home to Brisbane when his goods were held up in Malaysian customs. And so he needed a payment to retrieve them. 'The first amount I sent him was $7,000. When he went to get the money, he told me he needed another $7,000,' she recalled. 'Everything he said was backed up by "documents" - and there was always a lawyer in the background when we spoke over the phone. 'When he tried to pay me back, he said his bank couldn't do the large international transfer so he arranged for a courier to deliver the cash instead.' Ms Meister said she was given a link to a website with a 'tracking sheet', in which she kept a close eye on the parcel's movement. Despite casting some doubts on the man, Ms Meister continued speaking to the man as the weeks passed - but he started asking for money +6 Despite casting some doubts on the man, Ms Meister continued speaking to the man as the weeks passed - but he started asking for money But when the parcel reached Kuala Lumpur airport, there was a $25,000 fee to let the cash leave the country. 'Carlos had listed my business address on the documents so I was worried. I thought, "God, there's a brief case full of money with my name on it",' she said. 'By that time, I thought it might look suspicious if I let my money in my name sit there, I was kind of thinking "well I've got to pay this money to get my money back". She made the big payment but when the parcel got to Melbourne airport, she was hit with another fee. 'I pretty much paid it. Money was getting hard to find. He pretty much picked up the last amount of my money,' she said. He tried to request more money to cover his medical fees but at that point, I had gone through my last dollar On the day she was scheduled to supposedly get the parcel with the money she'd been promised, she received a phone call. 'I got a phone call from someone saying Carlos and his lawyer had been in a serious car accident so they needed money for medical expenses,' she recalled. 'My stomach dropped to my shoes. I knew at that point, I'd been scammed.' She didn't pay for their medical fees - and the pair stopped talking for about a week. 'He then tried to request more money to cover his medical fees but at that point, I had gone through my last dollar,' she said. 'I couldn't pay him anymore and I even told him I wasn't going to send him any more money. Shortly after that, he made a "miraculous recovery" but I'd stopped talking to him by then.' Ms Meister even tried to report the incident to police but there was nothing they could do after she was conned out of $100,000 in total. And two months later, she received a text message from Carlos, saying: 'This is all a terrible misunderstanding.' Without a second thought, Ms Meister fired back: 'You're a scammer'. 'After I accused him of being a scammer, he ended our conversation with: "Catch me if you can, my dear",' she recalled. Ms Meister said she eventually found a support group called Romance Scams Now where women share similar tales of their ordeals. I know I'll never get my money back but all you can do is raise awareness. There's a lot of lonely people out there, the dating websites are riddled with scammers 'I used to hear about the TV stars who were scammed and remembered thinking "how can you send money to someone like that?",' she recalled. 'I think I was sort of aware but I had no idea these things could be so complex or how well developed they are. It's a worldwide business, it's very difficult to catch them because they're sitting behind a computer. 'People think you're stupid but they're not walking in our shoes. It's not a matter of being stupid. Even the most intelligent, educated women are getting scammed. 'I know I'll never get my money back but all you can do is raise awareness.
