Supreme Court affirms interim forfeiture of another N2.4bn linked to Patience Jonathan Published March 15, 2019 KINDLY SHARE THIS STORY Ade Adesomoju, Abuja The Supreme Court on Friday affirmed another order of interim forfeiture made by the Lagos Division of the Federal High Court in respect of the sum of N2.4bn allegedly traced to the wife of former President Goodluck Jonathan, Mrs. Patience Jonathan. The apex court, had barely a week ago, affirmed an interim forfeiture of the sum of $8.4m belonging to the ex-First Lady and directed her to return to the Federal High Court in Lagos to show cause why the fund should not be permanently forfeited to the Federal Government. On Friday, in a separate appeal, a five-man bench of the apex court unanimously handed down a similar verdict on another sum of N2,421,953,522 in the bank account of Lawari Furniture and Bath Limited, a firm which the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission had linked to Mrs. Jonathan. Lawari Furniture and Bath Limited had, through its lawyers, Chief Mike Ozekhome (SAN), filed the appeal to challenge the January 12, 2018 judgment of the Lagos Division of the Court of Appeal, which had affirmed the interim forfeiture order of the Federal High Court in Abuja in respect of the N2.4bn. https://punchng.com/supreme-court-affirms-interim-forfeiture-of-another-n2-4bn-linked-to-patience-jonathan/

‘N62.3b fraud: EFCC freezes 30 accounts of ex-NSITF boss, seizes 37 assets by Yusuf Alli, Abuja March 13, 2018 The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has frozen 30 accounts and seized 37 assets allegedly belonging to the former Chairman of the Nigerian Social Insurance Trust Fund, Dr. Ngozi Olojeme. The agency had earlier linked 38 houses to Olojeme but it has obtained a court order to seize 37. In one of the houses at No. 25, Kainji Crescent, Off Lake Chad Crescent, Maitama , Abuja, the EFCC detectives were said to have uncovered a state of the art bathroom suspected to have cost about $2m to $4million. The EFCC is probing about N62.3billion fraud in NSITF with $48,485,127 credited to Olojeme. The ex-NSITF, who was grilled by the EFCC in January, is still placed on administrative bail with a responsibility to report fortnightly for interaction. But the EFCC however yesterday said Olojeme was yet to admit that she committed any fraud while in office. She insisted that she was innocent of all the allegations against her in spite of the fact that her Account Officer, Chuka Eze has spilled the bean. Findings by our correspondent revealed that the probe of Olojeme has reached a level for her arraignment in court by the anti-graft agency. A top source, who spoke in confidence during an update session yesterday, said: “We have frozen 30 accounts traced to Olojeme in some banks. But our detectives discovered that she is the kind of person who does not keep huge money in these accounts. In some of these accounts, there were funds ranging from N20million to N30million, which were insignificant compared to slush funds traced to her. “Investigation confirmed that the cash looted in NSITF was evacuated under the guise of award of contracts. The contract sum will be paid to a company and her Account Officer will pick the raw cash and go to Bureaus De Change(BDCs). “The Account Officer, who has made startling revelations was actually what our detectives termed ‘clearing and forwarding’ for her. “When we confronted her with our findings, she refused to admit committing any infractions while in office. She refused to admit having been confident that all the slush funds were withdrawn in cash. “So far, she is ready to go through the rigours of trial. We are already seeking legal advice on whether or not she should be arraigned with other management staff of NSITF or be tried separately. “Already, the EFCC has arraigned a former Managing Director of Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF), Umar Munir Abubakar and four others for alleged diversion of N18billion out of the sum in question. “The others are Deputy General Manager, Finance Henry Ekhasomi Sambo; General Manager, Legal Adebayo Adebowale Aderibigbe; Chief Richard U. Uche and Aderemi Adegboyega.” Responding to a question, the source added: “We discovered a state of the art bathroom in one of her houses at No. 25, Kainji Crescent, Off Lake Chad Crescent, Maitama , Abuja. The EFCC is suspecting that the bathroom might have cost about $2m to $4million. “At the appropriate time after final forfeiture of the mansion, Nigerians will have access to the amazing bathroom.” Meanwhile the EFCC has secured a court order to seize 37 out of 38 houses allegedly traced to Olojeme. The seizure followed an Interim Forfeiture Order by Justice A. I. Chikere of the Federal High Court, Abuja. The order said in part: “An order of interim attachment/forfeiture of the asset attachment of the properties set out in the schedule attached herein. “An Order stopping any disposal, conveyance, mortgage, lease, sale or alienation or otherwise of the properties/assets described in the schedule attached herein. “An Order authorizing the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to appoint competent persons/firm to manage the assets/properties listed in the schedule herein, temporarily forfeited to the Federal Government pending the conclusion of investigation and determination of criminal charges against the suspects. “And for such further or other orders as this honourable court may deem fit in the circumstances of this cases. “It is hereby ordered as follows: that the order is granted as prayed. That the order made is to last for 6 months. That no order as to cost.” The EFCC had in a report gave the details of findings against the ex-NSITF boss. The report said in part: “That through this process, Dr. Ngozi Olojeme, the then NSITF board chairman, has collected a total sum of $48,485,127 from Mr. Chuka Eze (her account officer at FBN), which cash he collected on her behalf being the dollar equivalent of monies paid to BDCs by NSITF contractors. “She and others also diverted huge cash allocated for allowances of its staff and compensation to contributors. Detectives actually traced some of the NSITF funds in the personal accounts of Olojeme and the former MD, Umar Abubakar. “For instance Abubakar and others dishonestly converted to N18billion, being contribution from the Federal Government of Nigeria as take-off grants and Employees Compensation Scheme (ECS) for MDAs. “The said sum was diverted into personal accounts by an e-payment mandate jointly signed by Umar Munir Abubakar and Henry Ekhasomi Sambo.” The report added: “It was discovered that the NSITF accounts in First Bank of Nigeria and other banks have witnessed a total turnover of over N62, 358,401,927 between 2012 and 2015 from the Employee Compensation Scheme contributions. “That out of the N62bn, the Federal Government contributed N13,600,000,000 while the sum of N48,758,401,927.80 was contributed by the private sector. That there were several payments to individuals and companies from the NSITF bank accounts for purported contracts or consultancy services. “That some individuals and companies that received these payments, in turn, transferred part of the monies directly to the NSITF officials while others transferred huge sums to bureau de change operators who changed them to dollars.” The assets and their locations Plot R/151(No. 30A) Kingsway Road, Old GRA, Enugu. Nigeria records $2.8bn Balance of Payments surplus in Q4’18 ON MARCH 13, 2019 By Elizabeth Adegbesan Nigeria’s Balance of Payments (BOP) improved to $2.1 billion surplus in the fourth quarter of 2018 (Q4’18), representing 162 percent increase when compared with the $4.54 billion deficit recorded in the third quarter of the year (Q3’18). The improvement was driven by 21 percent decline in imports and 2.1 percent increase in exports during the quarter. The CBN disclosed this yesterday in a report titled: “Brief on Balance of Payments Statistics Q4’18.” The report stated: “The provisional Balance of Payments (BOP) estimates for Q4’18 showed a significant improvement in the BOP outcome as the overall balance of payments recorded a surplus of $2.8 billion compared to a huge deficit of $4.542 billion and a surplus of $6.18 billion recorded in the preceding quarter and corresponding period of 2017, respectively. “The current account balance (CAB) improved from a deficit of $1.544 billion in Q3’18 to a surplus of $1.104 billion in Q4’18. The financial account balance indicated a net acquisition of financial assets of $2.328 billion in the review period as against a net incurrence of financial liabilities of $4.62 billion recorded in the preceding period. “The current account indicated a positive outcome during the review period, recording a surplus of $1.105 billion as against a deficit of $1.544 billion and a surplus of $3.657 billion in the previous quarter and corresponding period of 2017, respectively. This development was largely attributable to the decrease in imports and payments on income. “The surplus in the Goods Account increased significantly to $6.794 billion in Q4 2018 from surpluses of $3.76 billion in the preceding quarter and $5.473 billion recorded in the corresponding period of 2017. “Export earnings rose by 2.8 per cent to $16.656 billion in Q4 2018 when compared with Q3 2018. It also indicated an increase of about 27.6 per cent when compared to corresponding Period of 2017. Earnings from crude oil and gas, which accounted for 93.8 per cent of total export earnings during the review period, increased by 2.1 per cent to $15.62 billion in Q4 2018 when compared with the preceding quarter, while earnings from non-oil and electricity exports increased by 15 per cent to $1.035 billion in Q4 2018 when compared with the preceding quarter. “Available data showed that payments for import of goods (fob) to the economy in the review period decreased significantly by 21 per cent to $9.862 billion below the level recorded in the preceding quarter. This was largely as a result of 20 percent decrease in the imports of non-oil products. “Net out-payments for services during the review period increased by 17 per cent to a deficit of $8.288 billion when compared with the level recorded in Q3 2018. When compared with the corresponding period of 2017, it indicated a much higher increase of about 77 percent. “However, the deficit in the income account (net) decreased by 11 per cent to $3.714 billion in the review period from a deficit of $4.162 billion recorded in the preceding quarter. When compared with the level in the corresponding period of 2017, it indicated an increase of about 25 percent. “The surplus in the current transfers (net) increased by 5.7 per cent to $6.312 billion in Q4 2018 when compared with the preceding quarter. However, the level of surplus was 8.0 percent higher than the level recorded in the corresponding period of 2017. “Direct Investments inflow decreased by 28 percent to $314.44 million when compared with the preceding quarter of 2018. It however, indicated a decline of 67 percent when compared to the corresponding period of 2017.’’ https://www.vanguardngr.com/2019/03/nigeria-records-2-8bn-balance-of-payments-surplus-in-q418/

Senate President: Northern youths back south south Tony Akowe, Abuja by Tony Akowe, Abuja March 7, 2019 A group of northern youths under the auspices of the Pan African United Youth Development Network wants the leadership of the All Progressives Congress and the Presidency to allow the south south geopolitical zone produce the Senate President in the 9th Senate in the interest of equity and national interest. The group said the position of the Senate Presidency be zoned to the South-south geo-political zone considering their contribution to the development of the country. President of the group, Habib Mohammed said in a statement made available to The Nation that it will be politically lucrative to compensate the south south with the office of the Senate President and balance the political equation in the country. The group ask “the Presidency and the leadership of the All Progressive Congress (APC) to consider zoning the office of the Senate Presidency to south south, considering the contribution of the region to the national economy of the country. “It will be politically lucrative to compensate the region with the Senate Presidency and also to balance the political equation of each region so that no region feel marginalized. Doing this will further enhance the intertribal and ethnic relationship. “We also ask all elected Senators to put aside sentiments and selfish interest and work for the national interest first by giving the south south the opportunity to produce the next Senate President in the interest of equity, fairness and justice. “We believe that the South South zone deserve to be given the opportunity considering the fact that they remain the only zone in the country that has not produced any principal officer of this government since 2015 when the Buhari government came into office. “Currently, the North West and South West have the President and Vice President, a situation that will remain so for another four years; the North Central is currently occupying the position of Senate President, South East, occupies the position of Deputy Senate President, while the North East has both the Speaker of the House of Representatives and Senate Leader, with the South south the only zone left out. “Zoning the position of Senate President to another zone outside the south south will amount to robbing them of a well-deserved position especially when you consider the fact that they currently have ranking Senators from the zone. “It is our belief that the North East should be given the position of Deputy Senate President in the 9th Senate. In view of this, we urge President Muhammadu Buhari, the National Leader of the APC, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the National Chairman of the APC, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole to put the interest of the nation at heart, consider the principles on which they stand and on which the party was built and allow the south south produce the next Senate President. “We recall that when the zone occupied the position during the second republic, the legislature had a near perfect and cordial working relationship with the executive led then by late former President Aliyu Shehu Shagari. We have not had such a relationship since then.“ http://thenationonlineng.net/senate-president-northern-youths-back-south-south/

OZEKHOME: FANNING THE EMBERS OF DISUNITY AND SUBJUGATION OF IGBO RACE By FEMI ADESINA On February 27, 2019, lawyer and activist, Mike Ozekhome, wrote a piece under the headline, 'Buhari's skewed view of the Igbo race.' On face value, the piece seemed to advocate the cause of the Igbo race, but a dispassionate analysis shows it for what it truly is: drivel meant to incite the Igbo against the Muhammadu Buhari administration, and further inflame passions that would pedestal the ethnic nationality against the rest of the federation. Ozekhome appeared to be a friend to our brothers and sisters across the Niger, but in actual fact, he was a ravenous wolf in sheep's clothing. Shakespeare describes such as "goodly apple but rotten at the cheek." It is always so very easy to claim that Nigeria is disunited, while at the same time be a purveyor of hatred and discord. What Ozekhome did was simply to fan the embers of hatred, bile and disunity, playing the Igbo against the rest of the country, while appearing to be their friend. Well, it is not surprising, as the Good Book tells us that even Satan has a way of appearing like an angel of light, to deceive and beguile the unwary. The verbose and bombastic article (make it simple, is one of the principles of good communication) is filled with half truths, outright falsehood, and vitriol, all to ensure that the Igbo nation sees President Buhari as its arch enemy. It is example of an outsider weeping more than the bereaved. Lawyer Ozekhome has a right to his political persuasion, which is also very well known. He is a friend of that rent seeking political class, which is fast becoming endangered species in Nigeria today. Under President Buhari, it is becoming crystal clear by the day that the political breed that the lawyer loves is becoming a vanishing sect. And that breed may never control the levers of power, and the purse strings of the country again. What grief for lawyers that thrive better under such circumstances! See a portion of the acerbic piece that betrayed Ozekhome's political preference: "It was enough that President Jonathan had been sacrificed and booted out of office by APC and its international collaborators, led by the US, UK and EU. These are the same countries the very government is now tagging meddlesome interlopers in our internal affairs." So, after all, the piece was not about love for the Igbo nation. At the substratum level is love for the free spending Goodluck Jonathan administration that frittered away the commonwealth of the country, looting everything from the Federation Account, to Excess Crude Oil Account, central bank, and the foreign reserves. Some lawyers possibly made a killing under such laissez faire atmosphere, and wished it had lasted forever. But here's the truth for Ozekhome: the Jonathan administration is gone, and gone forever. Nigerians are not likely to ever afflict themselves with such squander-mania again. Those who long for the onions, garlic and cucumber of Egypt had better accept the fact that we have left the land of servitude forever. We are now almost in Canaan, a land flowing with milk and honey, and there's no turning back. Ozekhome described the February 23 presidential election as "complete murder of democracy and electoral process by the Buhari government." Really? Millions of Nigerians don't think so. Rather, the day of the election goes down in history as one in which bloody nose was given to the confederacy of wheeler dealers that wanted to seize the public treasury again, and make a mess of it. However, the people said a resounding no. It pains the lawyer and his ilk to the marrows. But not to worry, he can still make some fast bucks from the community of senior lawyers being assembled by Atiku Abubakar in a futile bid to regain a 'mandate' which never existed in the first place. The Agenebode, Edo State born lawyer merely used the Igbo nation as a smokescreen to display his angst against the Buhari administration. Hear what he wrote about the Igbo in respect of the February 23 election: "However, notwithstanding the militarized process and disenfranchisement of many Nigerians, the Ndigbo people tenaciously stood their ground as a proud race. They clearly rejected Buhari through the ballot box." True? False. What about the Igbo that gave the All Progressives Congress (APC) and President Buhari more than the required 25 % in Abia, Imo and Ebonyi states? Are they not members of the ethnic nationality again? Does Ozekhome think Atiku Abubakar, or anybody else, would ever become Nigerian president by just locking down two geo-political zones out of the six in the country? It will never happen. They are the ones that fooled the old political war horse into believing that he was already president before the first ballot was cast. Soon, they will leave the man in the lurch, and look for economic benefits somewhere else. But they should never forget that the days of free money are gone in Nigeria. Yes, you can still get quite wealthy in this country, but you must work for it. And hard, too. Ozekhome gave himself away as a typical person that speaks from both sides of the mouth. He said President Buhari did not visit Anambra State till he found the need to go for political campaign, first in the gubernatorial election of 2017, and the recent presidential race. You never can win with some people. Head or tail, you lose. They can cavil, and live permanently at the complaint counter of life. The president visits a state, he is criticized. He doesn't visit, he is excoriated. The best thing is just to ignore the professional complainers, and do what you think is right. Pretending to love the Igbos, while inciting them to what may tantamount to political doomsday, the lawyer said President Buhari never attended the burials of Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe, Chief Odumegwu Ojukwu, Chinua Achebe, and Dr Alex Ekwueme. Some people make political capital out of everything, including shedding crocodile tears at burial ceremonies, but not Muhammadu Buhari. We all know what he did when Dr Ekwueme took gravely ill, and he arranged medical evacuation by air ambulance abroad. The government also footed the medical bill. The state burial was attended by the Vice President, Prof Yemi Osinbajo. So impressed was the Igbo nation that a high powered delegation came to the presidential villa to say thank you. Yet, a man from Agenebode, pretending to love the Igbo more than themselves, is playing cheap politics with burial ceremonies. See this pettiness about the mausoleum of the great Zik, which had been abandoned before the Buhari administration completed it: "He was in Onitsha to commission his only project and 'federal presence' since 2015, the repainted grave tomb of Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe (Zik of Africa) whose burial obsequies he had also shunned in 1991." If Ozekhome had been less consumed by hatred, he would have realized the deep friendship that existed between the then Gen Buhari, and Zik's son, Bamidele. They were so close that the latter played host to Buhari many times in Onitsha. Bile and 'bad belle' also led the lawyer to describe the magnificent mausoleum as 'repainted grave tomb.' This was a project that Power, Works and Housing Minister, Babatunde Raji Fashola, personally supervised, and delivered in grand manner. But Ozekhome probably has not been to Onitsha, and does not even know the road to the city. That's why he calls it a repainted tomb. Yes, the horse of an adversary is never tall. If it stands at over six feet, the enemy says 'oh, see this dwarf horse.' Hatred blinds. Animosity addles the mind, and poisons the soul. Sometime last year, Federal Government unveiled about 69 projects currently being executed in the South-east alone, including the Second Niger Bridge, roads, other bridges, electrification, and many others. But people like Ozekhome would not see it, as they would rather chase briefs in Ekiti State under Ayo Fayose, for which they got humongous legal fees. God dey! In the Good Book, wise men came from the East to see the holy child, Jesus. Wise men still abound in the eastern part of Nigeria. They know what pertains to their peace, and they voted wisely on February 23. The Igbo must inevitably produce the President of Nigeria. But that eventuality will not come by listening to hate preachers like Mike Ozekhome. We have seen how hate preachers from the pulpit failed resoundingly in the presidential election. Hate preachers from the bar will also fail, and no mistake. You can only be president when you build a coalition round the country, and not by circumscribing yourself in two regions. That, at best, can only give you a clan head. .Adesina is Special Adviser to President Buhari on Media and Publicity https://todaynewsafrica.com/femi-adesina-ozekhome-fanning-the-embers-of-disunity-and-subjugation-of-igbo-race/ https://newsdiaryonline.com/ozekhome-fanning-the-embers-of-disunity-and-subjugation-of-igbo-race-by-femi-adesina/

Amumaigwe:Neither do I. If you are happy with how you Govern yourselves in your South East state, then allow SW determine how they Govern themselves. It is rude to intrude in other people affairs. This is human faeces that litters Ogbeite market. Abia state is an eyesore. How you are satisfied with that and now, more concerned about SW politics is something that should be studied in colleges about hypocrisy. Are you smarter than the Igbos in the East that cannot govern themselves properly? Are you planning to turn SW into what South East is today? My people says that whoever will borrow one a cloth to wear, you first have to look at what he is wearing. With all due respect, please go and fix Abia and other SE states before you tell us who should govern us in SW. The last time I checked, buses are still dropping people at different SW states, while they go back empty to bring in more people. Iwotago?
