Virgin Atlantic Airways reveals ambitious plans for Nigerian market

Virgin Atlantic Airways has reiterated its commitments to support social and economic growth in the country, coupled with ambitious plan for the air travel market.

The airline thanked Nigerians for their supports of its daily service to London over the last 16 years, saying it is left optimistic and ambitious for 2018, doing business with Nigeria.

Head of Virgin Atlantic in Nigeria, Samuel Lindfield, said the airline was about to embark on a further significant programme of investment to the fleet, with the introduction of the A350-1000 from early 2019.

Linderfield said: “This aircraft will offer a superlative level of customer experience, a 25 per cent reduction in fuel consumption versus equivalent aircraft, and ambient mood lighting to reduce the effects of jetlag. When combined with the brand new 789-9s and modern A330s, Virgin Atlantic will boast one of the youngest and most fuel efficient fleets in the sky.”

Beyond the fleet renewal agenda, the airline which ranks one of the best ten in the world in in-flight entertainment in 2017, said it has have introduced a number of customer-focused initiatives, which help it better give back to the communities it serve in Nigeria.

These include inflight Wi-Fi connectivity between Lagos and London, a revamped Upper Class food and beverage menu, free chilled bottles of water on arrival and free luggage trolleys for all passengers arriving on Virgin Atlantic in Lagos.

According to Lindfield: “These initiatives all form part of the focus on offering bespoke service to our Nigerian passengers, on one of our flagship routes.”

On its Corporate Social Responsibility (CRS) in Nigeria, year 2017 saw Virgin Atlantic collaborated with British Council ‘Enterprise Challenge’ winners, Nasir Yammama and Sophia Uno. The two English outfits had launched the Enterprise Challenge in 2014 to help budding Nigerian entrepreneurs reach for the skies.

The competition provides a platform in Nigeria for young, brilliant entrepreneurial minds to develop their commercial skills and businesses. Nasir and Sophia were the faces of the entrepreneur advertising campaign recently run in Nigeria.

Sophia Onu also took part in the Virgin Atlantic ‘Business is an Adventure’ series, offering unrivalled levels of exposure to her growing business, The 5K Shop. Both entrepreneurs received mentoring sessions from Sir Richard Branson himself.

Online 'Nigerian Prince' scammer caught ...not who you'd expect

SLIDELL, La. (WPMI) — The Slidell Police Department in Louisiana say they have arrested a "Nigerian prince'' scammer who is accused of pretending to be African royalty as part of a scam to trick people out of thousands of dollars.
Michael Neu was arrested and charged with 269 counts of wire fraud and money laundering by sending emails to people and then claiming to be a Nigerian Prince who claims they are beneficiary of a large sum of money -- but in order to receive their "inheritance" they must first send him their bank account details. Police say people fall for these scams.
"Most people laugh at the thought of falling for such a fraud, but law enforcement officials report annual losses of millions of dollars to these schemes," Slidell police said in a news release.


Michael Neu of Slidell, Louisiana accused of posing as a 'Nigerian Prince' online to scam people out of their money.

NSE listed among best five performing stock exchanges

S&P Dow Jones Indices has listed the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) as one of the best five stock exchanges globally.

CNNMoney reports that other stock exchanges listed alongside the NSE were Buenos Aires Stock Exchange of Argentina, The Stock Exchange of Hong Kong Limited, Borsa İstanbul of Turkey and New York Stock Exchange of the United States of America.

“The value of public companies on global stock markets grew by $12.4 trillion in 2017, according to S&P Dow Jones Indices, which included dividends in its calculation,” the report read.

“The Nigerian All-Share index is still miles below record highs set in early 2008, but a 43% rally in 2017 has helped to close the gap.

“The index suffered mightily in 2015 and 2016 as low oil prices, militant attacks, currency troubles, elections and Ebola hit investor sentiment.

“But oil prices have moved higher, the central bank has made it easier to swap currencies and the economy has snapped out of recession, explained Zin Bekkali, founder and CEO of Silk Invest.

“If you look at where we stand today, the [Nigerian] market is still one of the cheapest markets on the planet,” said Bekkali.”

Qatar was listed as the biggest loser of 2017.

“Gulf nation Qatar’s stock market tumbled by 19% amid a spat with its neighbours: Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates.”

Market capitalisation on NSE had hit the N13 trillion in 2017, the first time in three years.

The Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Mr. Babatunde Fashola (SAN), has denied ever saying as the then Governor of Lagos State that if given a chance, he could fix the problem of electricity in Nigeria within six months.

Fashola, who was speaking during a programme on the Nigerian Television Authority Network on Tuesday, which was monitored by our correspondent, urged those crediting the statement to him to stop peddling falsehood.



The minister challenged anyone with a recording of where he had boasted that he could provide regular electricity to Nigerians within six months to publish such insisting that he had only promised that he could supply a community in the Lekki area of Lagos with power from an Independent Power Project in the state within six months with the permission to do so.

He said, “I have heard that I said that electricity problem will be solved in six months. I have never made the statement. Anybody who has a video of where I said this should please make it public. The point I made was when I was handing over the Lekki IPP because we had about 10 megawatts of power there.”

Power transmission hits 5,222 megawatts — highest ever

The ministry of power says the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) successfully transmitted 5,222 megawatts of power to the national grid, the highest transmission in the country’s history.

The ministry announced this in a tweet on Tuesday morning.

“The Transmission Company of Nigeria, (TCN) recorded a new national peak with the transmission of 5,222.3 mega watts (MW) of electricity into the national grid. This achievement is the highest ever recorded in Nigeria’s power sector to-date.”

In a statement released in Abuja on Sunday, Ndidi Mbah, TCN general manager, public affairs, said the company developed a transmission rehabilitation and expansion programme (TREP) to enable it prioritise and execute critical transmission projects across the country.

Mbah said this necessitated the clearing of TCN’s stranded containers containing various transmission equipment at the seaports, to enable it complete previously abandoned projects to further expand the transmission grid.

She said a total of 759 containers were abandoned by contractors at the ports within the last five years.

Of this figure, Mbah said 454 have been cleared by the TCN from March to date, adding that payment for 193 containers had been made and payments for 112 containers were yet to be made.
