Lagos moves against celebrity tax defaulters, sues Davido, AY Published January 14, 2018 The Lagos State Government has begun moves to tackle high-profile tax defaulters in the state and ensure high level of compliance with its tax laws. As part of this initiative, the state government has moved against some celebrities in the state, who are alleged to be tax evaders despite their earnings from their business. A court paper, sighted by SUNDAY PUNCH on Saturday, indicated that the state government had dragged sensational singer, David Adedeji Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, before the court for alleged tax evasion. Also, a reliable source in government told SUNDAY PUNCH that the state had equally moved against popular comedian, Ayo Makun, better known as AY, for allegedly failing to pay tax. Davido, the Chief Executive Officer of HKN Music, Lagos, has been charged before a Lagos High Court in July 2017 and risk a jail term if convicted. AY has had a longer history in court against the state as he was charged to court in 2016 for failing to file his tax returns as required by law. “Notable among these alleged tax offenders are two of Nigeria’s celebrated artistes –Davido and AY, the comedian. Both artistes have had a long standing battle with the Lagos Internal Revenue Service for tax evasion. “Davido, who has record deals with Sony Music Entertainment and endorsement agreements with various companies in Nigeria, has not filed his tax returns or remit any taxes to the Lagos State Government,” the source said. A reliable government source told SUNDAY PUNCH on Saturday that Davido had defended his action, claiming that he paid taxes to Osun State since he is an indigene of the state. The source added, “Remember that Davido said he made N500m from his N30bn concert recently. We must know how much he paid to the LIRS. “AY too said the same thing. The comedian claimed to be paying his taxes to Ondo State, where he hails from. It seems these celebrities don’t understand that the tax law stipulates that you must pay your tax to your state of residence. “Anyway, we are already in court. Others will soon appear in court if they don’t obey the state tax law. You can’t be making money in Lagos and refuse to pay tax.” Speaking with SUNDAY PUNCH on Saturday, AY said he was not aware of the suit, asking to be given some time to confirm if his office was in receipt of the court papers on the said suit. The Manager of Davido, Asa Asika, who asked to be sent a text message concerning the singer’s suit with the state government on alleged tax evasion, had yet to respond to the text as of the time of filing this report. http://punchng.com/lagos-moves-against-celebrity-tax-defaulters-sues-davido-ay/

Between Buharists and IPOB supporters JANUARY 13, 2018 By Richard Akinnola At the height of the IPOB madness on Nnamdi Kanu, the IPOB guys were Kanu/Biafran fundamentalists, insulting anyone that had a contrary opinion on the IPOB agitation. Even those who ordinarily were not conceptually averse to the injustices against South Easterners but decried the methodology of Kanu, were attacked and insulted by the IPOB fundamentalists. Army with armoured tank(inset: IPOB’s leader, Nnamdi Kanu) I am beginning to see a similar pattern by the Buharists. They are unsparing and vitriolic on any suggestions that tended to go against the president’s chances or suitability in next year’s election. Even fellow moderate Buhari supporters or erstwhile supporters who I thought they should woo and convince, are not left out of this arrogant display of “to hell with you guys “. Unfortunately, they are not politicians. A politician who needs a vote would do anything to beg for that vote. Even the Bible records that if you lose a sheep, you would leave the rest to look for that lost sheep. Until the eve of an election, a good politician still goes after one vote. To the Buhari fundamentalists, because most of you are not politicians, you don’t know the damage you do to the brand of Buhari by attacking those who are opposed to him. Your responsibility is to woo them and not attack them. That is a major step in political strategy. Don’t turn yourselves to IPOB members who, rather than explain their positions, attack and insult people, thereby further alienating those who could have been on their side. Don’t adopt the pugnacious and irreverent posture of one Laurretta Onochie, one misfit in the presidential media team, who believes the more she insults people on the social media, supposedly on behalf of Mr President, the more her day was made. Help Mr President to get more friends and not more enemies. He has enough opponents and enemies already. https://www.vanguardngr.com/2018/01/between-buharists-and-ipob-supporters/ |

10% of Nigerians responsible for 26.59% of national income – NBS ON JANUARY 12, 2018 By Emmanuel Elebeke ABUJA – The National Bureau of Statistics, NBS says inequality in Nigeria worsened between 2004 and 2013 but improved in 2016. In a report released yesterday, the NBS said the inequality which was measured by the Gini/Thiel worsened from 0.356 in 2004 to 0.41 in 2013 but improves to 0.391 in 2016. Using Thiel, it indicated that inequality worsened from 0.217 in 2003 to 0.395 in 2013 but improved to 0.31 in 2016. With respect to consumption shares in 2004, the report shows that the bottom 10% (poorest of the poor) of the population consumed 2.56% of goods and services, while the top 10% (super rich) consumed 26.59% of all goods and services. The richest 10%, however, is said to be responsible for 26.59% of national expenditure or income in 2016. This increased to 33.72% in 2013 but decreased to 31.09% in 2016. According to NBS, the top 20% were responsible for 42.40% of national income/expenditure in 2004. ‘‘This increased to 48.28% in 2013 but declined to 46.63% in 2016. While no agreed standard definition of the Nigerian Middle class exists, for the purpose of this report we have classified Decile 01-03 as the lower class, Decile 04-07 as the middle class and Decile 08-10 as the upper class,’’ it stated. Accordingly, the report indicates that upper class was responsible for 58.39% of national income/expenditure down from 59.42% in 2013. The share of the upper class in national income had been rising between 2004 and 2013 before reducing in 2016. The middle class on the other hand accounted for 30.26% of national income/expenditure in 2016, higher than 29.14% in 2013. The share of the middle class had been declining between 2004 and 2013 in favor of the higher class but that reversed in 2016. The lower class, on the other hand accounted for 11.35% of national income/expenditure in 2016, lower than 11.43% in 2013. The NBS report however, indicates that the biggest gainers of income/expenditure shares between 2013 and 2016, has been the middle class, while the lower-class share remained constant, whereas, the high-class shares reduced. https://www.vanguardngr.com/2018/01/10-nigerians-responsible-26-59-national-income-nbs/ |

[BREAKING] Patience Jonathan loses bid to reclaim seized $5.9m Published January 12, 2018 Oladimeji Ramon The Court of Appeal, Lagos Division, on Friday upheld the decision of the Federal High Court in Lagos, which ordered the interim forfeiture of a sum of $5.9m found in Mrs. Patience Jonathan’s Skye Bank account. The appellate court, in a lead judgment by Justice Mojeed Owoade, threw out the ex-President’s wife’s appeal, challenging the forfeiture of the funds to the Federal Government. It held that the appeal lacked merit. Justice Mojisola Olatoregun of the Federal High Court in Lagos had in April last year ordered the temporary forfeiture of the funds after the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission argued that the money was reasonably suspected to the proceeds of fraud. Apart from Patience’s personal account with $5.9m, the judge also froze a number of accounts linked with her including an Ecobank account, with a balance of N2.4bn, opened in the name of one La Wari Furniture and Bath Limited. But efforts to secure an order for the permanent forfeiture of the money was opposed by Patience, through her lawyer, Mr. Ifedayo Adedipe (SAN). Also, Chief Mike Ozekhome (SAN), on behalf of La Wari Furniture and Bath Limited, opposed the permanent forfeiture of the funds in its client’s account. The two lawyers subsequently went on appeal, seeking to overturn the temporary forfeiture order and recover the funds. But the appellate court on Friday dismissed their appeals. The EFCC had in an affidavit it filed before Justice Olatoregun said its investigation revealed that Patience opened the Skye Bank account on February 7, 2013, and used it to allegedly warehouse proceeds of crime. According to an operative of the EFCC, Musbahu Abubakar, the former first lady made several cash deposits in United States dollar into the account, through a former Special Assistant to ex-President Jonathan, Waripamo-Owei Dudafa, and a State House steward, Festus Iyoha. He said as of January 30, 2015, the Skye Bank account had a balance of $6.7m but Patience subsequently withdrew it down to $5.9m. The EFCC had prayed the court to urgently freeze the account so as to prevent Patience for moving the funds. Justice Olatoregun had then granted the interim forfeiture order and adjourned till May 22, 2017, for anyone interested in the funds to appear before her to show cause why the funds should not be permanently forfeited to the Federal Government. http://punchng.com/breaking-patience-jonathan-loses-bid-to-reclaim-seized-5-9m/ |

sevenhundred:Almost all the entire infrastructure Ministry (Power, Works, Housing and Transport), are concentrated in the hands of the South. Almost all the Finance and the economic management of this country is concentrated in the hands of the South: Central Bank, Federal Inland Revenue, Petroleum, Budget etc is concentrated in the hands of the South. Come to think of it, the part of the country with the most security challenge is the North. Does it not make sense to have somebody from the North to look after security? The good thing is that these noise makers are in the minority. They made worst noise in 2015, yet their choice candidate lost the election despite all the lies against Buhari. Buhari will win re election quite easily. Most Nigerians can see through their shenanigans and emotional blackmail. Let the wailers continue in their tomfoolery. 2019 is around the corner, when they will suffer another defeat. |

Factsheet: Federal Response to the Attacks and Killings by Herdsmen in Benue and other States. January 11th, 2018 Posted in FACTCHECK,LATEST NEWS Background Insinuations and allegations that the attacks and killings are happening because President Buhari is Fulani are both unkind and incorrect. These attacks long predated the Buhari Government. In 2013 no fewer than nine cases of herdsmen attacks were recorded in Benue State alone, with more than 190 people killed. In 2014 there were no fewer than 16 recorded attacks, in Benue, which claimed more than 230 victims. Between January and May 2015, six attacks left more than 300 people dead, again in Benue State alone. This historical context is important for a proper understanding of the issue, and to avoid unnecessarily politicizing what should be regarded and dealt with as acts of criminality. These attacks have been a longstanding issue, and successive governments have struggled to contain the situation. The Buhari Administration is more than fully committed to bringing the cycle of violence to an end, prosecuting the attackers, and preventing further killings and attacks. The security agencies have standing instructions to arrest and prosecute any and all persons found with illegal arms. Federal Interventions The recent killings in Benue and Taraba States have elicited the following Federal responses: 1. President Buhari has met with the Governor of Benue State on the matter, to assure him of the Federal Government’s commitment to protecting farmers and communities. 2. President Buhari has directed the Inspector General of Police to relocate to Benue State. 3. On Monday January 8, 2018, the Minister of Interior, Abdulrahman Dambazau, convened a security meeting on the issue, bringing together Federal and State government officials: Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Heads of security agencies, and the Governors of the most affected States: Adamawa, Benue, Kaduna, Nasarawa, and Taraba. 4. On Wednesday January 10, 2018, the IG held a Stakeholders engagement with the Benue State Government, elders, community, religious and traditional leaders etc 5. Since the first week of January, immediately following the January 1 attacks, the Inspector General of Police has deployed the following to the affected areas: · Ten (10) Units of PMF · Police Special Forces · Counter Terrorism Units · Conventional Policemen. · Police Explosive Ordinance Department (EOD) · Special Police Joint Intelligence and Investigation Teams · Police Aerial Surveillance Teams (Police Helicopters) 6. The Nigerian Army has deployed Special Forces to Benue, Taraba, and Nasarawa States. 7. In Benue State, eight ( suspected herdsmen are in Police custody over the recent killings, and are currently being prosecuted.8. The Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development is working to establish cattle colonies across the country, in 2018. These colonies will provide grass and water for the cattle, and education and healthcare facilities for herders. They will also have Agro-Rangers deployed to secure the facilities. https://statehouse.gov.ng/news/factsheet-federal-response-to-the-attacks-and-killings-by-herdsmen-in-benue-and-other-states/ |
