This was why women were denied economic power in the olden days. They depended solely on the male folks (even if hubby dies they move her to his brother or another male in the family) they Could not escape abuse and even death. They had no hope living alone away from their husbands or husband family. If they even took the bold step to return home, Mothers would shoo them back to their husbands houses/families for fear of being shamed as a mother/father who welcomes back a married daughter. Greedy brothers and uncles would not give them land to do anything. They had to endure all types of shit in husbands House for the sake of their children who depend on the economic power of fathers to survive. Today women can earn their living, they can move on with their lives and not starve. Although society still expects women to eat shit nd endure, many bold women opt out of difficult marriages
