He's not gon be a permanent tenant. He only needs 5 months to get his sh*t together or move back to Nigeria. He's not staying behind and allowing his stay/visa to run out. He's hoping he will meet someone he will get involved with within 5 months or even get a place to work for that duration before returning home. He needs money to sustain himself back home.

I understand his plan. Not bad in itself because many great people travelled abroad as illegals and without a dime to their names and by honest and deligent means they became citizens and live happy lives. Your "cousin" right now isn't even illegal. So he can make the remaining months work for his good.
He should go look for places with large Nigerian population
He should avoid hanging with negative people
He should be wise but not ungrateful or blood sucking
He shod be willing and ready to help people around him even for free or a bowl of hot porridge
He should protect the interest of who ever opens his doors to him
He should avoid flashy or oversabi life styles
He should get involved with a good representative of his religious belief who will mentor and protect his interests
These will ensure his stay happy and good. And even if he has to return to naija due to immigration procedure/process, he will have the backing of good people behind him who will eargerly support and expect his re entry.
Nothing is hard in this life if we choose to clear our minds and let the spirit of God within take the lead.
