Politics / Re: How Would You Spend 4.97 Trillion-naira ($31.8 Billion) Nigerian Budget by Delta007(m): 8:08pm On Oct 17, 2011 |
It's fine if that is what you think. There are investors all over the world looking to jump on the next big thing and pour their cash into it as far as they make money. Unfortunately, it's cheaper to produce power through other means than solar. Bulk power generation is the key to "cheap" power in today's world. The moment other resources like coal and gas start becoming very scarce and the price of generation goes through the roof, solar will be given a look; or maybe there will be a major breakthrough in solar technology so that the cells are relatively cheap. Over the last couple of years, I have been involved in lots of wind turbine projects. In today's world, wind energy is also very expensive. It takes about $2mil to generate $1MW of wind energy; as an investor, you'd never be able to recover your money in 20years with the tarriffs in Nigeria. Wind energy generating stations are the flavour of the day because of government tax breaks to big investors and regulations to utilities otherwise nobody will touch them. The funny thing about these renewable energy projects is that countries that undertake them "don chop belleful". Nigeria has not even tapped all its hydro resources around the country but you want to pour money into solar; and you folks will be the first to blame Mr President for mismanagement. Afro_Blue: |

Germany is a country that has implemented schemes to produce electricity. Solar is not a significant source of electricity production because it is relative expensive compared to other means. Nigeria has several cheaper means of producing electricity - hydro, coal, gas, etc. These sources are barely tapped. Afro_Blue: |

$31Billion for a country like Nigeria is not alot of money. I see a few of you folks appropriating numbers around without understanding the real cost of these services or commodities. To put things in perspective, Mississippi is one of the poorest states (if not the poorest) in the US with a population of 3million people. It's 2011 budget was $4.5billion. South Carolina's budget for 2011 was $21billion with a population of 4.5 million people. So how would you spend $31billion on almost 150million people? It tells you one fundamental truth about Nigeria - It is a poor country, which is also mismanaged. So as a manager, do you spend extra resources trying to clean up the system (which is virtually impossible to do) or do you propose new ideas on how to generate more revenue so as to fund projects that create value to society? The obvious answer is the latter. In the first place, a significant chunk of the funds is used for operating expeditures. Unless you plan to lay off a whole lot of civil servants (even though most are underemployed), then there's hardly any funds for capital investments, which by the way are what helps to stimulate growth in an economy. By the way, even if you spend $10billion on the current inadequate power sector, it will get you no where. On the conservative end, it costs about $1.5B to generate 1GW of electricity. How many GW did you say Nigeria needs again? My point is, all these accounting exercises are frugile until you really put these figures in perspective and look for new ways to combat poverty. Our sole source is oil and for at least 30years, we have been going round the loop with no real break. Einstein will call this insanity (Doing same thing over again and expecting different results). Misappropriation (or corruption or whatever you call it) is a constant in any economy. What sharp minds do is build systems that will effectively nullify this "waste". Nigeria has to look for other ways to generate revenue and Nigerians need to open their minds. The idea of awhoof is what is killing Nigeria. Emerging economies like China started their big slam by opening up its economy to trade. Deregulation of the downstream sectors (and that would include the removal of subsidies, Privatization of the power industry (just like was done in telecoms), Major capital investments in the Agricultural sector (which will have to include private partnerships) etc will good ways to move our economy forward. Till then, I can add up anything to make $31billion. |

ghany 01:Yes to both. To convert ro a study permit, you have to apply to the nearest consulate (Buffalo) with an admission letter, proof of funds, etc. You'd be asked to undergo medicals and if all clear, you'd have to go to the nearest border to get the permit. To extend a visitor's visa, you'd apply to vegreville, AB and you have to state why you are extending. You also have to prove that you actually did (or currently doing) what you came in for. |
Politics / Re: Will Nigeria Ever Be Freed From Corruption? by Delta007(m): 1:13pm On Oct 17, 2011 |
Siena:Corruption has little to do with Nigeria and Nigerians. It was not invented by a Nigerian nor is it only practised in Nigeria. It's a widespread systemic cancer which unfortunately is entrenched in the fabric of most (if not all) nations, including the US, UK, Canada, etc. However, the way it is practised is different. In Nigeria where there's no accountability and more importantly, no functioning systems in place, people "steal" in broad day light. In the West, they use other ways to prop up their base. The notion that "if there was no corruption in Nigeria, things will be better" is a fallacy. So, in a nutshell, corruption is going nowhere. People will only find better ways to enrich themselves through loopholes. However, creating value for every stakeholder (including the common man) is more important. For instance, you have the folks in the NFF. Funds are allocated for football or other sports. Rather than just "chopping rice and cleaning mouth", they could clean up our league and promote it big time. Can you imagine if 50% of Nigeria's population has some allegiance to local football clubs and fill up stadiums on a weekly basis? The potential revenue from a prosperous Nigerian league will easily dwarf any funds they'd receive in the next 10years if things remain the same and even if they siphoned some funds, you'd hardly see the difference. Unfortunately, we have so many myopic airheads all over the country and it is this myopic foolishness that needs to be eradicated. It all starts and stops with the fundamental mentality of Nigerians - Get rich quick by miracle, oracle, hook or by crook! |

Hey guys, This thread is mainly based on the visa process but very little info is given on the universities out there, I actually wanted to know where in Canada is there a high concentration of black people more specifically Nigerians I've always wanted to know this like you know in London - Peckham and Woolwich has the highest concentration of Nigerians LOL I'm also a 2012 fall hopeful, looking to do Masters in finance or economics , which uni in Canada would you recommend i.e. location-wise, rankings, cost of living etc ?? pls reply thanks In toronto, you find quite a number of Nigerians and other immigrants. However, for whatever it's worth, looking for a place to settle or school where there's a high concentration of blacks or Nigerians is one big mistake alot of Nigerians/Africans/immigrants make. Nothing wrong with mixing with your own but you should always look to step outside your comfort zone and make strides. Truth is, the Nigerian communities abroad (in most countries I have visited) are not established enough to give you an advantage in your career unlike some other communities. This is just my opinion and you take it with a pinch a salt. |

I am presently in Canada studying for 4yrs B.Sc programme, my question is can i apply for permanent residence under the High Skilled Experince Class, since i have about 8yrs experince working as a Nurse at home and abroad with my diploma from LUTH in Nigeria. I need clarifications pls @Sholay36: There are different streams which you can apply. You may visit cic.gc.ca to familiarise yourself. I am unable to help you determine your best option since I do not know your background. What province are you based? |

nikeylee94:There's no rule that prohibits you from studying medicine in Canada. However, there are very few medical schools across the country compared to applicants. So even some Canadians who want to study medicine end up going abroad. Truth is, it is very difficult for international students to get a spot unless your government has an agreement with the medical school or you bring something extra special, which are the undergrad level is a blur. What some int'l students do is do their undergrad in Canada and move to the US for their medical programs. The US has more medical schools and there is obviously less competition for spots. |

paddyman:Nope. You'd be put back on the next possible flight to Nigeria. However, unless the individual is either stupid or used fake documents, there's no reason to deny him/her entry. The questions at the border are fairly straightforward. @Longecity, good to know you are settling in. As far as you have less than $10,000, you should be fine. However, you'd be wise not to carry lots of cash. Wire transfer is the way to go. The Western World is a cashless society. |

keemzy1:Very possible. If you graduate from a recognised program/institution, you will be given a work permit (if you apply) regardless of whether you get a job. The onus is on you to find a job and get some experience so that you could apply for Permanent Residency if you wish. Quite a straightforward process. rowlandoo:Any organization can sponsor you. However, you have the burden of proof to show a tie between you and your sponsor. Keep in mind that from the Canadian perspective, a church is a charity organization, not a one-man business. |

Her application is dependent on yours, since you are the primary applicant. If you are approved, there's a high possibility that your spouse's application will be approved. I'd visit them on Thursday or Monday next week to find out the status before I defer the admission. Goodluck! lee007: |

@Wealth, feel free to believe what you want to based on one case. Normally, you could get a study permit approved same day. However, since you (or your friend) come from a tropical country, you have to do medicals. This is where the delay lies (if you apply outside Nigeria). Even if you do the medicals same day you get the instructions to do it, it takes a couple of days for the DMP to send it to the regional medical centre; some DMPs could take a week or two to send the applications off. The regional medical centre for Nigeria is Paris and the centre for applications from Canada, US is in Ottawa. This centre in Ottawa is backlogged; it has been backlogged for years. The bulk of their applications are Permanent residency applications from within and outside Canada (North America) and study permits are a very small fraction. Immigration consulting is what I do. I have clients applying from all over. The average SP application from the US is 2-3months; there have been some outliers (shorter and longer) but you do not base your advice on outliers. isO_Savvy:Alberta is a funny spot. The bulk of the business go through Calgary just like Toronto and Ottawa. Good luck with your application. |

isO_Savvy:iSO, you are a funny chap. Keep being positive. The reality is I pop in from time to time, read a few posts and try to help where I can. Funny enough, people actually pay me for some of the advice I give here for free. So when someone like Slim who is asking for some advice/help is giving me conditions, I just skip. It's not as if I have anything to lose and he/she will probably be fine with or without my advice/help. @Slim, I have sent you an email. dade112:This question has been asked a gazillion times. Please take some time to go through the thread. You'd need to do your homework but a list of institutions in Canada is here: http://www.aucc.ca/ Tuition fees are somewhat relative, depending on your program; however, Memorial University seem to have one of the lowest in the country. People: For those of you in programs that have already resumed but have not gotten Visas, you need to differ your admission or get a letter from the institution that you can resume late. The embassy may deny your application simply because the date has elapsed. You have to be pro-active. Goodluck!! |

chukie94:They do. I am very sure about this. Canadian DMPs (everywhere, not just Nigeria/Africa) cannot make a decision on medical tests/results. They only conduct the tests and send the results to the Medical Centre dealing with that region (in this case, Paris for Africa). It's the medical doctors in that centre that make the final recommendation to the embassy. The medical centre's system is tied to the embassies in that region. |

Career / Re: Llm @ Robert Gordon University (sept 2011) Or I Decline. by Delta007(m): 1:09am On Aug 03, 2011 |
Just a couple of points. There's no way living expenses in the US is more expensive than the UK. Not in this life. Secondly, if you can go the US or Canada route, go for it. Two years will fly and you are done. I'm no fan of one way thinking. If you go to the UK, your only prospect is Nigeria unless everything lines up perfectly, which is very rare. In Canada, you have the prospect of either working in Canada or moving back to Nigeria. It's a little tougher in the US but no where near the UK. The choice is yours but if I were in your shoes, UK will never be on my list. Thank me later! BTW, there are a few universities that have given (and are giving) full scholarships to LLM candidates from Nigeria. The first black student to ever win the governor general's award in Canada is my friend. He completed his PhD in Law in 2002 making him also bag the award for completing his PhD program in record time. So many other Nigerians have come in for their LLM on scholarships and have completed their two year programs and moved on to better things. The other day, I ran into a dude who just completed his LLM program. He was earning the same 30k salary in some Eastern Nigerian town; he told me that he woke up one day and decided to apply to different universities in Canada by writing proposals. He got a full grant and he's done with his program now. So I'd encourage you to look at North American universities; you may just suprise yourself. Even if you do not get a grant, your prospects in North America are better than the UK. Good luck. |

Apart from renting in Abuja or Lagos and maybe PH, renting in other parts of the country will give you very low returns; may not be worth it when you factor in opportunity cost. Just my two cents! |
